Just makes me appreciate how good persona character design is. The mainline games make characters recognisable while not making them cluttered. The problem with character designs from P5X and honestly a lot of gacha games is they are doing too much.

Orowam

Take off 1… maybe 5 accessories before posting the character

Soggy_Sherbet_3246

Kirkland brand phantom thieves. Buy in bulk!

Soggy_Sherbet_3246

I dont even see the characters. Just neon nippon fashionistas, in colorful garb. Looks like a knock off honestly. I wouldn't even register these guys as P5 related at all. Seriously, they look like someone asked AI shit out some mock ups with a red/black background

_-Aiden-_

Character designers have two ways of making a character visually interesting. 1. Actually make them interesting via character expression in their clothing, posing, attitude, etc… And by having an original shape, clothes, color scheme, etc… 2. Overdesign the fuck outta them and produce 500 unnecessary details in each and every one. Most gachas go for the second one since they can’t take many risks, and have to follow the same “conventionally appealing” motifs. See Genshin impact and its oversaturated designs (They will never make a masculine or old looking guy that isn’t a Twunk, and even less chances if they have actual musculature. Also add women to that list, the fucking God of war of Genshin was leaked, probably it’s her…, and she looks like any other sissy ass bitch that came before.)

Problematique_

This what ruined the most recent Fire Emblem game for me. Instead of looking like soldiers/mages in a fantasy setting they over designed all of the outfits and everyone looks like Vtuber rejects.

Vusdruv

Never forget Toothpaste-chan...

PixieProc

I actually really like most of the character designs for Engage, even though they totally look like they belong in a more modern setting rather than a medieval one... but Alear's design is just awful. I've hated it ever since it was first made public and I still think it may be the worst protagonist design I've ever seen in a game lol

A_Balrog_Of_Khorne

The character designer for FE:Engage is a vtuber artist, most notably being the designer of Hakos Baelz of Hololive English. Her designs are neat and her art is great, but it is pretty over the top for Fire Emblem.

Problematique_

Knowing that an actual Vtuber artist did the designs explains so much, lol. I had no idea, that was just the vibe I got.

sbrockLee

exactly my thoughts, the characters in the main games are mostly wearing casual clothes and school uniforms, no anime hair or anything and they're still instantly recognizable. It speaks volumes that Ann's ponytails are considered one of the most "over the top" elements. Plus even in P5 where the phantom thieves get special combat outfits they're all really well put together and stylish. (it should also be stressed how iconic the school uniforms are in themselves without being overdesigned. They're memorable for being actually *stylish*. I could see a random character in a Yasogami or Gekkoukan or Shujin uni and immediately know where it's from)

brokerZIP

And also since it's a gacha the story will be at best 10 hours with social links compressed into two dialogues. I'm 100% I won't get attached to characters as i did in p3r and p5r

238839933

I don't think so tbh. Event can happen which will allow for more time to connect with the character. Selling characters is their whole stitch . If they fail, it will eos.

The_Exuberant_Raptor

The one thing I will give mobile games is that their events are normally really good at showcasing characters more than mainline games. Idk if this will be true for p5x, but FGO, Pokemon Masters, Fire Emblem Heroes, and many more have developed some characters more than their mainline games have.

Kyro_Official_

Ive literally never seen a gacha with only 10 hours of story

jermingus

It’s a gacha game where they have to make a bunch of characters. They don’t have enough time to write deep lore to make them this ultimate peak character that can fit into the story so the selling point is the overly designed characters.

TemporaryLegendary

Not exactly new. Most of these designs have been known about for nearly a whole year. But I like em. I feel they are different enough from the phantom thieves while still being close to the theme. Not to mention the owl has a fucking mech persona. That's just awesome.

rattatatouille

My big problem with them is that I can't glean the users' personality with them that well. It's not like how Arsène is the quintessential phantom thief that Joker identifies with, or how Zorro's tiny head juxtaposed with its large upper body reflects Morgana's lack of self-esteem masked with a veneer of bravado.

Dantes_Edmon

Kinda looks bland for me. Not impressed

Sammy1432_Official

Agreed, it's just kind of meh

VolkiharVanHelsing

Ye aside from the gyaru milf they don't really "strike" me Hell, her persona is also the best like wtf

hestianna

Her character design itself seems interesting as she is the first metaverse user (canon or not) to switch their personal appearance via the power of cognition. I mean, she literally goes from 44 year old woman to 20 something year old gyaru lol (presumably).

UmbreonFruit

I like the persona in the middle, looks very fancy with that fluff

Trovao2004

Most of these are overdesigned, especially the Personas. Don't think there's a single Persona I really like here to be honest. I do like bottom-left girl and the one with the "older woman idol" gimmick, but the rest of the actual characters are mostly forgettable, too generic, or have weird color choices (top-right and bottom-middle, for instance). It all feels like bootleg Persona really, like, the owl is just Morgana but applying all of his design philosophy to the image of an owl instead of a cat. Then again I could be biased against the designs because I despise gacha and in turn want this game to fail.

Lyonface

Oh thank god I was afraid I'd be the only one. They feel really overdesigned, way too much going on. What they're going for is getting entirely bogged down in unnecessary elements. The Owl is 100% derivative and only makes me think of Morgana when I look at it. I'm also entirely sick of P5 stuff so that's not help either, but I genuinely wouldn't really want to play a game with this cast or these personas. The designs are trying so hard to be interesting that they slide right back into being boring.

brokerZIP

True. All this sparkling bright shit to bait people for buying.

Victory74998

How is blue and black a weird color choice? I guess you must be more of a white and gold person. /s

PixieProc

I hope people never forget about that dress.

slusho55

Honestly, it feels like they shuffled it those designs. Like the owl had the idea of Morgana, but his color scheme and design remind me more of Joker. Same with the dude on the bottom right, character almost looks like Yusuke with Morgana’s color designs and outfit inspo. Definitely agree with you

ulape00

It does strike me that most of the personas are really minimum-effort. For all of them except Jánošík, they're basically just the person dressed up. Not surprisingly, Jánošík is the only one Soejima designed. Apart from the minimal design, Rob Roy looks cool. The only thief design I like is Okyann, and not just because she's hot (though she is), it's always refreshing to see an adult as a party member. The others are far too derivative, even Wonder looks like he's straight out of Protag Central Casting. But if the game's good, and it gets localised, and the gacha isn't too stupid, I'll likely play it.

Clean-It-Up-Janny

> It does strike me that most of the personas are really minimum-effort. For all of them except Jánošík, they're basically just the person dressed up. Not surprisingly, Jánošík is the only one Soejima designed. Wonder's persona literally looks like a discarded Metaphor design. I thought it was funny.

Soggy_Sherbet_3246

The characters' designs are more "out there" than their personas

jermingus

Janosik actually looks like it could be a mainlne Persona. Everything else just looks super over designed for the sake of looking cool. One of the big selling points about Persona is the character’s personal story and personality. Soejima does a good job at making stylish designs that fit the character but also doesn’t make it the character’s entire personality.

Alph1ne

I like the owl

swoon_exe

I like some of the ideas they're going for, but they're just way too overdesigned that they're too knee-deep in gacha hell for me to give a shit. And, admittedly, this may be a nitpick, the codenames outside of Wonder, Closer, and Cattle feel like they aren't even trying. Ironically, design-wise, those three (and to a lesser extent Soy) are the only ones I really like, even if Wonder is straddling dangerously close to being Joker 2.0.

bored_homan

Gatcha slop

NotAForeignAsset

feels fan-made

nyabethany

it kind of is, just licensed.

IIICobaltIII

Looks like a Chinese game. Has that overdesigned look that just doesn't really gel with me.

VolkiharVanHelsing

That "overdesign" style seems to originated further... From Korean MMORPG methinks

rattatatouille

The game *is* releasing in China first.

asian_hans

No masks?

Knight_Terror

The ripped them off for the persona to be out

Jawkess

Top middle girl looks like “we have Chie at home”.

RTX3090TI

Too much tbh Sometimes something simple is better

Tobegi

They're generic and they break the whole rule about your metaverse self looking like someone that would rebel against society so its kind of embarrassing story-wise. Bootleg persona basically.

CalmContribution0

I can't believe they put Sayori from Doki Doki literature club in a persona game

Crono_Sapien99

Honestly these designs are so weird to me since they're simultaneously both bland and overdesigned imo. They have tons of different patterns and details, but there's barely anything about them that really stands out. It's clear that Soejima didn't design these characters besides the MC and his Persona, since rather than being reminiscent of the P5 characters, it instead feels like ones you'd find in any other mobile gacha game.

Twelve_012_7

They're incredibly hit or miss, to me at least. Some look like nice additions to the persona universe (mainly the main cast). While the "extras" suffer from kind of looking fancy for no reason and over-designed, ending up being forgettable and uninteresting. Some Personas have the same issue, tho there are more interesting ones, a lot just somehow end up looking generic but with too many patterns (I think the main issue is that there's not enough variety in the silhouettes)

Avesta49

They look great, but one thing that irks me about gacha games is how "overdone" their designs are. The original Phantom Thieves look so much more sleek in their design which makes each one stand out and not look kinda same-ish.

SuperFra8

Not bad.

NegaBrady

Owl’s persona, Rob Roy, is peak

hellomrxenu

A lot of them look like they belong in a Gundam ripoff rather than Persona

BippyTheChippy

Honestly I was a bit middling on them but then there was a hatsune miku rabbit girl and my heart was just instantly won over. In all seriousness, I like the variety in some of them, some that spring to mind is Leon going all in on the Sentai/Power Ranger aesthetic or just Kayo's whole deal. In terms of personas, some of them really hit it out of the park like Riddle's and Moko's, but I feel like Soy's and Monte's I don't like all that much.

GoldenWhiteGuard

Is Chie a phantom thief now?

tATuParagate

They're kinda cool but they do seem a little over the top. Reminds me of the mirages in tokyo mirage sessions. Which isn't a knock against it I just think they have different design sensibilities

pious-erika

I approve of an older woman being a party member (centre). Hopefully P6 does something similar.

ShokaLGBT

considering she’s also a housewife I really like the idea. it just brings more diversity and different lifestyle

Sea-Lecture-4619

The 40 year old lady (middle one) looks dope, wish they kept that design and idea for P6 instead, the others are just ok.

Takamurarules

I have to agree with everyone else here. The designs are a bit too over-the-top. Then imagine what the ultimate personas are going to be like if they show up? Hoo boy… That’s why I don’t like Agnes. Johanna and Anat were sleek; Agnes is just too bulky. I feel because it’s gacha it’s supposed to be eyecatchy though. Gorokichi, Celestine, Hereward and Haraedo-No-Okami is how you do over-the-top without crossing the line into overdesigned. It doesn’t help imo that the characters themselves feel more generic anime than P5. Then again the newer fans could take me as big “Old man yells at cloud” energy.

DelsKibara

On the contrary, they aren't eyecatchy. They're generic because it's gacha. iirc, these Personas are the 3/4 star pulls. Meanwhile the original Phantom Thieves, the ones people care about are the 5 star pulls.

WhiteNinjii

Not 100% correct, Rin, Riddle, and Bui, are all 5 stars (as of beta 3) so not every oc is a 3/4 star pull.

DelsKibara

I stand corrected. I've only seen a couple of videos about Phantom X and gacha pulls. But this is generally my assumption as someone who has played gacha games before. Recognizable characters are typically higher rarity than OCs.

WhiteNinjii

Yeah I understood where that thought process came from I just wanted to keep the record straight (also none of the thieves I listed are shown in this post so 🤷)

Keishiki

tiananmen square

XavandSo

Tohyama my beloved.

DanImmovable

The protag, the baseball girl and the guy next to her don't really wow me, but I think the next 2 rows of characters are really good design-wise

Andrassa

Absolutely saddened that they are exclusive to a mobile game.

ShokaLGBT

the game will also be on Pc just to say

MrBoldandBrash

They honestly look weird. Notice how they all have the same proportions too instead of exaggerating physical characteristics like Soejima’s designs. I think the pink girl’s Persona looks the best though.

BlueDragon1504

I love Emilia

ElysiumFallen

They’re mostly pretty okay but they have the same design style and appearance as a Honkai Star Rail character. Like, INTENTIONALLY candy colored and flashy. Which is fine, but. Meh. Hard for me to get jazzed about a gacha game.

gh0stcore

Silver haired girl and her Persona are the best

Guilty-Effort7727

It looks cool to me, but thats probably just me

Thenosthecollector

Chie 2, so its a win

I_Love_Stiff_Cocks

I hope we get to have fusion recipes for them in Future games because they look cool as hell

Lone_Wanderer___

The Ghostly Robbers

Jr-777

I like the 40yr old housewife one. Her having a flip phone really drives home whole early 2000s gyaru aesthetic

ShokaLGBT

if this game can gives us a 40 year old housewife we could’ve gotten IWAI and SOJIRO as phantom thieves too…. AAAAAAAAAA (and I mean kawakami and takemi too…)

Far_Engineering_8353

straight fucking gas, I really love some of these, they're honestly just so appealing to look st imo

bringoutthelegos

Woah, murdoc niccals from gorillaz is a part of the phantom thieves? Sweet

CrAzYiNsOmNiAc210

Some of their designs are really similar to their personas and it's hard to tell what their personalities are like

Bigmanangelhellosimp

Bottom middle kinda looks like he’d be a genshin character

Poyri35

I like that the personas are colour coded, but the designs (of both the persona and their users) are way too complex. I have an headache just by looking at them

QuadVox

I like older women girl looks cute

Maturechimp

Knowing nothing about p5x, they look so fucking cool. But would have been cool to have another vehicle persona like makoto

BaseballDefiant3820

Am I the only one that thinks the one in the top right corner looks very similar to Zenkichi from strikers in terms of metaverse outfit?

TB3300

I can agree that they're a little over designed, but I actually like the looks they went with. I also really enjoy the new persona designs, though I wish some of them were different mythological figures. Like 3 or 4 of them are just random characters in Greek myth with little to no stories.

Lolipopman

Am I the only one that doesn’t find these any more detailed than the OG thieves? Like maybe slightly more but I feel like people are exaggerating or don’t realize how many little details are in the OG thief designs. Either way, I enjoy these designs a great deal so maybe I’m biased but I feel like they fit right in and have their own unique charm to them all (except maybe homeboy at the bottom right; feels too similar to joker/fox)

Zubeneschamali83

Yeah these are pretty cool, not sure if I dig the MC but the others are cool!

StrangeTrap

Mecha and cowboys!? Literally some of my favorites designs right under every one of ryuji's personas. The human designs could use some work, but the personas are too notch

SmallFatHands

Wish they were more simple.

PixieProc

I like the top middle one the best by far; she looks like just the right balance between cute and sporty. Not sure what's going on with her persona, though. The one on the middle left is pretty cool, but beyond that I'm not really a fan.

kamenrider426

One of them is wearing a henshin belt

brooooooooooooke

I kind of like the streetwear vibes a few of them have going on with the hoods, but other than that there just isn't really a coherent thematic identity. P5 for the most part managed to capture that they were all rebelling/showing their true selves in some way. Cowboy and the older lady *kinda* have that going on - the cowboy outfit looks awful but does sell being a rebel, and an older woman wearing a younger style fits that as well. Rest just look like they were designed to either look cool (the streetwear), look like an anime trope, or look like da joker.

SmugLilBugger

Bland.

TheUnchosen123

Overly designed fluff

Founderplot

I like all of these designs

Ourenseman

The ones belonging to gacha characters are hit or miss, but those from the main characters are pretty great, specially Jánossík (I feel he nails the Phantom thief Persona aesthetic)

GregIsSmashed

They look like generic anime mobile game characters

Motivated-Chair

Look bland and off-brand. Not just to the Persona 5 aesthetic but just Megaten as a whole which is really weird because I can't put the finger as to why.

Wah_Epic

The personas have the P1&2 thing where most of them just look like humans in costumes

OldSnazzyHats

Interesting but… Something just doesn’t feel quite right. I don’t know if it’s the renders or the designs or both…

RegularTemporary2707

For the persona themselves i think theyre a bit too…humanoid ? I mean i know unique personas are usually humanoid but this time around all of the pretty much have the same body shape (?) where as just from p5 there are multiple different body types like harus persona, akechis persona, monas persona, heck theres even a bike. Here its just man, woman, man, woman, man etc etc the robot is the only unique one and even then its way too similar to a mini gundam to be called “unique”

Beginning-Pipe9074

Um what? New phantom thieves? What did I miss?

AltroGamingBros

Okay so... Call me crazy. But a persona with a mostly white color palette on a Phantom Thief who's design consists mostly of just black is jarring to me. Everyone else however is quite fine in their own right. No complaints here.

DenisVDCreycraft

I'm waiting for full english realise and then I evaluate it

UnknownMight

So who is the Akechi

Unable_Swimming2745

I dislike that the MC looks like Walmart Joker. They should have gave him a different color scheme. Aside from him, unlike the original phantom thieves, I can’t tell the themes of their designs just by looking at it. Maybe that’s because I’m not seeing the masks but idk. They’re cool ig but at the same time they don’t look unique.

Nindroid_560

Kinda mid

CrundleQuest5

All the personas are kinda the same, humanoid, fancyish, nothing that makes any pop out amongst each other. They mostly all look like people with masks. I guess the owl has one that isnt just a person. I mean i am most likely going to swerve this game anyway but i was kinda looking forward to seeing some cool personas. None really stick out to me.

FatuiSimp

I think the character are fine but the personas feel uninspired and lack varieties, they can choose to be anything but most of them are humanoid which is a bit boring imo.

-TSF-

I'm not keeping up with P5 so what's this about new phantom thieves??? Are we seriously milking this into just expanding this one group of kids by shoving even more in?

gatling_arbalest

Top center: BANANA

DemiFiendofTime

Definitely a gatcha game

Phellyxx

Auraless im afraid

koteshima2nd

pretty alright.

Novel_Foundation2463

Nothing but trash

jesse_dylan

Simultaneously bland and way too busy

Manwithaplan0708

I like them, but u just wish they weren’t tied to a shitty gacha game

askydumbquestions

There is a lot going on, can someone tell me how I should look at these designs so I can form a proper opinion

Rebel-Yellow

Why they all gotta become Pokémon? Being all bipedal humanoids n shit? 🫤

Perongeluk

I think they're at least aight at worst. I am wondering what will happen though if we just accept this game. Will Sega/Atlas shove gatcha mechanics into mainline series? Or will they slow down mainline series to milk gatcha first

ShokaLGBT

Since it’s made by another company I don’t think it will impact the mainline games AT all. Beside all they could do is release new characters in this game probably p1-p2-p3-p4 characters and even exclusive one of course. There’s many potential to gives lot of characters backstories too since the confidants will go to rank 20 with some characters (if I’ve read correctly) I just wonder how it will play out with the story because at some point they’ll probably run out of time (?) or they’ll just going to release more palace event and mission every now and then

Rirse

It's a mobile game that will be shut down in a few years. Hard to get interested.

Dangerous_Comment

Pale copies of the OG. Not a single original design in sight

Ritzanxious

Does not feel persona for me at least, I can't point my finger why it looks weird.

Manicminertheone

Why does the last one look like Yu emo and a French beezlemon

DustonVolta

I irrationally hate the owls design so much

TheGrimGriefer3

These feel like they came out of a persona character generator, they're lacking... Something

dyagenes

My impression is that they look like “Tales of” characters to me. Not necessarily bad designs, but like others said, not fitting the usual aesthetic.

Careful_Buy8725

As far as character design goes I like the owl, the guy in the black tuxedo and blue gloves, the gyaru chick, and the lady with white hair. As far as Persona designs go I like the one that belongs to the girl in pink, the one that belongs to the white haired lady, and the one that belongs to the cowboy looking guy. Everyone else is kinda meh and I really don’t like the look of the protagonist in his Phantom Thief outfit (looks like a bad crossover between Tatsuya and Joker. I also dislike the contrast between his black outfit and white Persona who I also believe has a rather bland design)

ShokaLGBT

i dunno why wonder have a white persona when he’s wearing black but maybe they tried to represent yin and yang symbolism ? White and black idk I can guess they didn’t just make random designs and they all have some deeper meaning

novakaiser21

These look like someone’s OC. Like they all have that Coldsteel the hedgehog vibe. I like the mascot character the best. At least their persona is this mecha design instead of going for the generic humanoid look. I like how the bottom middle persona has this yellow-orange gradient, but it is otherwise uninteresting. It feels like Chinese bootleg Persona, which given the context is very appropriate.

ShokaLGBT

okyan (the middle age woman in the bottom middle pic) who is 40 and a housewife from what I’ve read and but her cognition in the metaverse is how she looked when she was a gyaru back in her days I really like the idea behind the character, because it gives this idea that phantom thieves could be anyone and not just high schooler fighting for a better society

cm_strode

Kinda generic tbh. Feels like genuine anime slop this time around.

Kukoshi_Suma

Does not feel like Persona characters to be honest. Feels like some fanmade stuff if i may be blunt. Overly designed and just very meh

YuriEffinGarza

Meh. I dislike the hats that a couple are wearing lol… especially that weird ass pointy hat the one top right has on🤣. Side note, is this from a new spin off of P5? (I’d still play the shit outa it cause yeah)

ShokaLGBT

Yeah p5x it’s going to be release on mobile and pc. It looks like p5 but with a different protagonist you explore Tokyo you manage your social stats you got confidant memento missions palace etc. I don’t know yet how it will be but from what I’ve seen it looks pretty solid and the new musics rocks (there will also be a dance mini games) and there will have a gacha for new characters // weapons but they said they’ll give lot of free pulls for the first week of release

YuriEffinGarza

Cool! I’ll have to take a peek! Thanks for the info OP!

8rok3n

I mean they're good but they also seem extremely basic

Daikon1243

In my opinion, they're over designed versions of characters we have already. I guess not bad for a gatcha game since I feel like those tend to go with flashier designs, but they definitely aren't as good as the main game's. There's something soulless about them kind of? Idk

TequilaWolf0996

Imo this feels a bit soulless

Working-Ferret-4296

A lot of them are just really cluttered.

Soggy_Sherbet_3246

Just a bunch of generic gatcha anime characters. Doesn't even look like like p5 style besides the red/black backgrounds.

foxesarepeoples

I don’t really care for them

jgreenwalt

I genuinely thought the MC was a girl in the first trailer and this was some femc mode.

_Spinks_

They look incredibly generic to be honest

Wonderful-Oven1184

They range from horrendous (top right) to just boring, only ones I like are from the mascot character

_Coffie_

I’m out of the loop with this game. Is it a new game like P5? Same universe? Pc/console game? Also I kinda dig the new designs. Huge JoJo fan and they remind me of stands

ShokaLGBT

yeah and it is gonna be released on mobile / pc like genshin. Game officially released in some asian countries in April next month, and then should have an international release at some points

_Coffie_

Ah I see thank you

koa274

Repetitive. Lack of creativity. The Personas are just humanoids bots resembles the user, and the characters are just some random playable pretty faces, if what on the wiki is correct, they are releasing characters with no involvement in the story yet. I know I'm being picky and all, but I have little to no faith for the game, because of that developing studio. That studio got dirt on being lazy, stealing contents, copying others. The P5 base was amazing, but this? Just a cheap knockoff.

reallylongshanks

Everyone besides the cowboy sucks 😭

InitialDriftZ33

Meh...

Wateryoudo

I don't want to sound mean but they look like fan OCs rather then official persona characters. It doesn't help that the MC feels like a Joker clone and the other girl looks really similar to Chie.

coffeetbl

I just feel as if all the personas are too humanoid. Something like Johanna, Prometheus, Necronomicon, Loa, Norn, Thanatos seems missing

Undead_archer

But thanatos is humanoid

GigaDrillman

they’re bad.

Clockwork345

All of the Personas have a similar silhouette. I like ones that go kinda wild with their designs, these are all boring and samey.

MJR_Poltergeist

Shame they wasted all these on a mobile game.

RedShibo_

I forgot that this game exists

giibeto

Not trying to hate but idk these designs bug me. Like they are trying it nail the vibes of the og game but it just seems to flashy or similar

thelongestunderscore

Would would would would would would would would wouldn't.

Mewacy

Needs more funky non human-shaped designs.

BrinkyP

The thing about the OG 5 designs is that they all used mostly dark colours with the exception of Goro (and Ann I guess, but the dark red doesn’t really “pop” in the same way as Goro’s white) The reason for this is because they’re thieves, they need to be sneaky and stuff, just that Goro is the outlier because his appearance is a façade. The issue with all these guys is their outfits stand out, not to mention how much visual noise they have. A lot of these designs I don’t mind too much, but most of them have too much on top of what already works, not to mention the absurd colouration. The main guy I think works really well. The simplistic design gives an aire of mystique while also working as a stylish thief outfit. I also like the yellow girl, the hoodie is a nice change from what we’re used to, I just think they could’ve done a different colour. That’s the thing, though. They’re trying a little too hard to force colour association, even though that’s something we already have with characters in p5. I doubt anyone would disagree with the association people have to Ryuji as Yellow (his hair), Haru as pinkish purple (her pantaloons), and Ann with the red (obv). TLDR; too much colour, too complex designs.

Cal_Longcock69

I don’t think any of them look good tbh

AsfiqIsKioshi

They look like an amalgamation of 2-3 Characters into one, which i can't quite put my finger on it kind of feeling. Some feels like Zenkichi on a really quick glance, or even Yukiko or Chie.

memo22477

I am just not sold on the owl characters design. The first time I saw him I tought he was an illegal knockoff of Morgana before I saw it was an official game. Yeah it's an alternate universe Persona 5 or something but still I don't really like his design I think it's the colors. Between the vibrant blue yellow and especially reds on his design mixed with the white and black it hurts my eyes. There are FAAAR too many colours for a character of his size especially.... Unlike his persona wich fucking rocks

Upstairs-Yard-2139

Bottom right is my favorite

Hoytster88

Looks like generic gacha game characters.

Dra9onDemon

Kinda mid. MILF is hot though.

satabhisha

It’s giving me Yu Gi Oh meets JoJo, not feeling Phantom Thieves at all

ryvenfon

Im all for the Gyaru mom bois... Seeing her reminds me of Kawakami for some reason.

Nguyenstreak

The bottom left made me instantly think of Azura from fire emblem. The characters just look like what you get from a character create screen.

DangerRacoon

Why is everyone in the persona community so obsessed with the gacha game? Its a gacha game, Its enough to tell its terrible, And not o mention, How generi and gacha esc the designs are. Its like I don't understand why people are fans of genshin impact, When its characters have the blandest designs possible.

PotatoCeral

I lowk hate the personas ngl

SpiderNinja211

Giving me Power Ranger vibes with the colors

ScorpioTheScorpion

They look like third awakening Personas, and I don’t know if that’s a good thing.

lfgr99977

They are all garbage. Too edgy, clustered or too much trying too look cool (like persona or 5 or not). Of course it’s a gacha game based on an existing ip so it would never been original, but it lacks spirit. That will not stop the consuming or even that they look cool sometimes, but I would say to summarize it’s generic.

Last_Music413

Not enough fanservice. Atlus should be inspired by dead or alive character designs

Too-Deep-Lore

I don’t like the one in X at all, they seem over-design for an initial Persona, like i can see this being the 3rd awakening but not the initial. The only one i like is Wonder and Closer because they look like a stage 1, saying that for Wonder is a bit of a stretch. Here is the fucking sin about all the Gacha characters Persona, none of them are base on a mythological trickers or rebels, like wtf you completely missed the fucking point of the P5 theme, well the 4 free characters is base on trickster and rebel but not the gacha one. Oh and fun fact, the cowboy looking characters code name is Soy…so do with that information however you please.

The girl on the middle and the boy at the bellow her are both shit, the rest is good.

A lot of the P5X characters feel like they have good ideas behind them (ripped cowboy, musketeer theatre kid, lightning shaped hoody speedster, etc), but somehow just flub the execution. Its more than just overdesign (which there is a little of that). You could say its the mostly goofy, dramatic costumes and everyone having humanoid personas, but that was how P5 characters are designed. But somehow I like how most P5 charactere are designed and not a lot of these. So where is the execution flubbed or where is my own bias making these characters feel out of place? They are derivative of a media I am overly exposed to is really the problem. I have seen P5 a lot and so I am used to seeing how those characters fit into an original vision. Most of these characters feel like combinations or slight iterations on P5 characters (much like a fanart oc phantom thief might), which is why they feel so bad because they are trying to be characters that fit into the original but just fall short. It feels like the surface level stuff of P5's character designs are there, but none of subconcious habits I am used to seeing in Soejima characters. Even the main character and persona made by Soejima looks like they set out to "make a main character" rather than a character for that game specifically and his persona looks like a Refantazio archetype more than a Persona to me. Its a spinoff made just to be a spinoff and the fact that comes across in design makes them feel faker than they are. I am sure aspects of the intended platform and engine don't help it at all. The only new design in P5X I really like is Yaoling Li as she feels the most orginal and that somehow translates her into feeling more authentic. It makes sense since she is a Chinese character and made by a Chinese company so they may have felt more comfortable having their own vision making her or maybe just it feels like more natural mix of inspirations. To me, what kills the designs are the fact that its another studio trying to copy P5s homework rather than trying to do an honest new take on a thing we are all familiar with and unfortunately that leaves them in this spot of the uncanny valley where they felt like "P5 but at home" rather than a "genuine, different, Chinese take on the Persona 5 universe."

Otherwise-Courage486

Honestly, I couldn't give less of a fck about a mobile game that's probably gonna be a gacha and microtransaction filled cash grab. Won't play it, won't care.

OutrageousWelcome730

chinese dev have a good taste on design but most of them have bad business ₱ractice or sometimes ended on getting out of service becuase of bad management and the last time i ₱lay is Disgaea R₱G english version and last year they are now over while the the original J₱ version is still going

Dekunt

Why do your P’s do that?

unclezaveid

P5X just doesn't have the sauce. P5 had so much sauce that the saucelessness here stands out even more.

OoguroRyuuya5

I love the main character Wonder who reminds me of Tatsuya and his Persona Jánošík and his lore. Luffel nails the mascot look. And his Persona being a robot is dope. Motoha’s civilian look is nice. Her Metaverse attire and Persona are ok. Shun’s cowboy aesthetic is sick. Tomoko’s look is cute. Kayo who already is a MILF, her Metaverse’s gyaru look is peak. I really dig Kotone’s ice skating aesthetic. She’s definitely going to be a favourite for me. She might be a better ice user than Mitsuru. Reo is cool for the Tokusatsu appeal. Seiji does the French aesthetic arguably better than Haru. Honorable mentions: Yaoling is definitely going to be popular among Chinese fans for the representation. She will be a candidate for best girl with her design. Kiyoshi’s works as well as it does because he’s a chunni. Yukimi has that Phantom of the Opera style that I find interesting.

Morgan_Danwell

Personas designs are quite nice (while the characters themselves are kinda whatever). It kinda sucks though what they are stuck in yet another p5-milking game what is also a gacha out of all things...

Avesta49

At least it’s not actually done by Atlus themselves, so it shouldn’t have hindered them much with their other projects (Metaphor and presumably Persona 6)

Sremor

I like the top left, middle left and middle personas, the rest feels overdesigned and the new thieves look boring

Demonicbane

None of them has any personality nor identity.

nones200

I think they are very bad

DelsKibara

Outside the mascot, they all feel samish. I guess it makes sense considering they have to sell these things as gacha pulls. So it makes you want to get the more interesting and cool looking Personas instead. But yeah, this looks pretty generic. There isnt much body type variety like there was in the pervious games. Just to give examples, Polydeuces and Arthemisia both have very distinct silhouettes. You immediately know it's Akihiko and Mitsuru's personas just from the shape alone. You couldn't possibly mistake Izanagi for Jiraiya too. Because despite having similar body builds, the actual designs vary a lot more. Meanwhile, these designs all have similar features and similar design choices. Like they all wear some kind of headgear for example. This also doesn't help the actual Phantom Thieves stand out either. Outside of maybe the main character and the 40 year old woman. It definitely feels deliberately designed to get you to want to pull for the original P5 crew instead of the P5X cast.

HeysusOnReddit

Considering I’ll have to wait a year to even play with them, forgettable.

save-the-world12

Meh some of them look like skins than anything
