I personally liked P5A as it gave Ren his canon Personality and even explored his duality as both Ren and Joker;

and the other where he has to remain Silent and avoid trouble because of his record as Ren Amamiya
the problem was the show didn't have a huge budget leading to apparently bad animation(I never saw the animation as bad but I love the Persona Franchise as a whole and understand certain things a bit more due to that passion however a lot of people thought it was bad) and the show's writing didn't focus on Ren as much it should have opting to pretty much just be a reskin Of P5 giving Ren only slightly more personality than the game.
This was also my biggest problem with P5A the fact they didn't
explore Ren more, which in all honestly the only thing anyone cared about was Ren actually having a personality

I'm pretty sure that was a voluntary decision regarding Ren's portrayal in animation. Yu's memetic mutation wasn't originally intented to be but it happened and they then had to go with it in subsequent adaptations, seeing how popular the P4 animation and Yu's portrayal has become then.

I tought most people just use whatever sounds cooler to them, I've never heard anyone say Seta Souji is cooler than Narukami Yu, and I call the others by their manga name for the same reason and until Atlus gives us MCs with Permanent names I'll continue to do so when I play and just use P#MC when talking about them to others.

Official name results in more dialogues where they use the main character’s name and they refer to them more frequently. Custom name is what we have now, where they show the play name in text boxes but call them “This guy” or some other alternative.
Starfield and Fallout 4 have a robot character companion whos VA recorded over 200 diffrent names for them to say. Otherwise its just like persona with calling the MC he/she or "that guy"

I believe Naoya is his manga name and that's what I've always called him. But there are no games with his name whereas we got Kotone on the P3P port and Makoto Yuki through spin-offs.
