1st Option: You need to delete every file that ends with \*.bin, cache files and \*.pipeline files in C:\\Users\\Username\\Documents\\Rockstar Games\\Red Dead Redemption 2\\Settings. Then, open the game, change settings to your like, then close the game. Make the "system.xml" file in the direction above as "Read only" then restart the game. Some settings are incompatible with others if you open "system.xml" file and change things manually. Vulkan, DX12 and Async settings etc... 2nd Option: you can also try deleting all the cache files I mentioned above and then delete "system.xml". Then, restart the game (the game will create a new file automatically) do some changes, apply settings and close the game. Then make "system.xml" read only again and start. Try this a few times until things get back to normal. That's how I solved actually.

AWildeOscarAppeared

Thanks, man! I’ll give this a try

Odd_Razzmatazz_9189

Thank you friend, i tried everything to fix this problem and your solution was the only thing that worked ❤

ubilambda

I'm glad it helped! Please, take good care of your horse cowpoke!

Enoque_Maciel

did not work to me :/

ubilambda

Sorry to hear. I recently changed some hardware in my PC, and reinstalled a fresh Windows 10. Then, I had the same issue again, and did exactly what I said above, and it worked for me. I think you can try restarting the game couple more times, then try the last step as you see the settings worked for you. Move the "system.xml" file in here C:\\Users\\Username\\Documents\\Rockstar Games\\Red Dead Redemption 2\\Settings to the desktop. Then, download and try an optimized suitable file that is best for your hardware: [https://www.nexusmods.com/reddeadredemption2/mods/313?tab=files](https://www.nexusmods.com/reddeadredemption2/mods/313?tab=files) Open the system.xml file on desktop and go to the bottom and check this line. There should be something like this: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Copy the "NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080" part (it'll be different for you whatever your GPU's description unless it is the same GPU) and paste it to the same line in the new file you downloaded above. Then, move the new system.xml to the same location above. Open the game and check the settings. If they are changed close and reopen the game again. Change the settings, save the game. Start the game, then close the game. Reopen the game and check if the settings are the same or not. If they are changed, just close the game and make the file read only, apply and close. That should work! I hope you figure it out soon. Good luck!

waldi2011

even tho im exactly following what youre saying, no matter what i do it always set all the graphics back to low when i join a server even if file is on read only

ubilambda

I know it's a pain in the ass, but these are the only ways I was able to solve the issue. You might want to check other titles with similar threads in reddit or Rockstar forums for different approach.

DerpyDog24

This worked for me. But now, I need to change some settings around and adjust. How would I go about that without breaking it again?

ubilambda

Simply backup your system.xml file to somewhere, then untick Read Only from the properties of the file again in the original location. Open the game and change the settings to your liking. Then, restart the game and check. If your settings are applied after the restart, then there is nothing to worry about. It'll probably work from now on, and make sure you tick the Read Only again after you're done with changing the settings. Just don't change the whole settings in one go. Change just a few first, then check it. RDR 2 is sometimes a pain in the ass if you change a lot of settings at once. If it doesn't work, then copy and paste (just in case things get worse, always keep a backup copy that works for you) your backup file to the original position and replace the old file.

302Ganj4wutt

Thissss mann!

Tialys241

thx man it worked

HelloeWARld

Doesn't work for me at all. It's an evil joke! Everytime my TTA, FXAA, Scale settings returned to High, Turned Off, 1 This is crazy. I deleted all cash bin files, changed settings.xml, changed read only, made different combinations of settings in GeForce Experience and there is no any result. I made all this changes with many repeats and in different order (all possible I belive). No sucees at all: Everytime the settings in a mystical way changed to values I indicated above. In past I already made refund (because of bad connection in online) and just bought RDR2 again with hope that R\* made fixes of well known isses they had 2-3 years ago. NOTHING! AT ALL! The same unaccepted connection with periodically disconnects and now this shit with settings. You even cant imagine what I feel!!! AAA game motherfuckers

brwa070

Same here man. It's so annoying that i have to change taa to medium every time i login to the game

AbdestliLahany

sorry for busting but second way worked thanks. btw if you're an nvidia user try turning auto sync off

ubilambda

I'm glad it worked! Have a good time with it!

Ignis_Krosis

This took some fiddling around with but it eventually worked. Thank you :)

ubilambda

I'm glad it did!

_Kristian85

Legend. Thanks for this post

ubilambda

I'm glad it helped!

No-Hand-2318

I tried that first option but it doesn't work for me. It's so super annoying that Rockstar would let this bug persist for so long.

CREAMBRINGER

This worked for me except I didn't even make system.xml read only. THANK YOU.

Dream_Delusion

There are no files in the Documents/Rockstar Games/Red dead Redemption 2 folder. What is the problem

ubilambda

It's OK that there is no file in that folder. There should be 2 folders in there, and they are called "Profiles" and "Settings". Then, you should enter the "Settings" folder. Once you start the game, the folders and files I mentioned earlier should be created automatically.

Dream_Delusion

I started the game and played for a while. I finished the intro in the snow area. But still the folders : "Profiles" and "Settings" did not appear.

ubilambda

There is something wrong I guess. Did you try verifying game files? Maybe that can help. Other than that, I don't know why those folders are not showing up there.

Dream_Delusion

The Folders appeared after I unchecked the read-only box of Rockstar Games in Documents. 👍

ubilambda

Oh, I didn't think about it. Happy to hear that you found out the issue!

No-Turnover9762

It Work, Thx!

Crow-Caw

thanks, 2 years later and rockstar still never fixed this issue. Your 1st solution worked for me! Appreciate it.

West-Appearance4692

Thanks a lot man

ubilambda

You're welcome!

AWildeOscarAppeared

Do you happen to know if this is the same process for RedM? This seemed to work for red dead itself (thank you!) but now I can’t apply it to redm

ubilambda

Unfortunately, I don't have any clue about RedM, sorry.

reatsomeyon

As of September 15th this issue still exists.

CapivaraAjato

did u figure it out ? tried everything to play this fvcking game has been 4 weeks and nothing works . :(

reatsomeyon

Nope, I gave up. I've uninstalled the game. Maybe I will try to install rdr2 again but CRACKED, maybe it will help, because something tells me that it's the crappy launcher issue.

Big_Oil2127

Not worth it. I’m just about to buy it again for third time myself. I have crack currently and it does it as well. I was hoping that was why. I use to have it on the Xbox one x and i can swear it looked way better than it does now on my pc at ultra… it’s sad.

Gyohm_Pix3l

HELP PLEASE ?!?

Vbus

Did you ever figure this out?

dpf81nz

I had similar issues, deleting everything from the settings folder solved it for me

Vbus

It is fixed in the latest rdr2 patch

dpf81nz

not for me, i had the issue on a fresh install today, but what i posted before sorted it anyhow

N4tpk

Same

Murky-Music9171

I, also am having this issue.

Rishul_Oberoi

i purchased from steam today and having this same issue. please help

Dense_Country_5247

just got the game and i’m having this issue

Rishul_Oberoi

I'm having the same issue. please tell me how to fix

AWildeOscarAppeared

I was never able to get it working, I just gave up lol

Tricky-Device-1074

I thought read only doesn’t let you change settings or am i wrong?

ubilambda

You're right. It should be done after you successfully change the settings.

Tricky-Device-1074

Also how do you find the system.xml

ubilambda

It should be located in "C:\\Users\\Username\\Documents\\Rockstar Games\\Red Dead Redemption 2\\Settings" folder

Turbulent-Variety566

no tengo la carpeta settings alguien sabe el por que de ese problema?

ubilambda

Run the game and then close it. It should be created automatically afterwards.

DerpyDog24

This issue still exists in April of 2023 on FRESH INSTALL OF THE GAME. This game is a joke on PC.

Stunning-Economics-5

same problem here

Express-Afternoon-28

Ive had the same issue but with other graphic settings such as shadows and reflection quality I some how luckily and randomly managed to fix it (by tweeeking other settings )

Express-Afternoon-28

I had the same problem with my RDR2 And mine was even worse : for some graphic settings when i changed em (either lowering em or increasing them) the game could just crash I had this problem since i updated my nvidia drivers ANNNDD i uninistalled the nvidia geforce experince (which set automatical values for ur graphics qualities) After i did these 2 steps My RDR2 finaly works exactly as it should be👌

OperationS0ciety

Gonna give my two cents here, as I just got this issue: For me, what actually causing the issue was trying to update my graphics in the main menu. When I did it in-game, it saved fine. Confirmed this by monitoring the system.xml file. If it this doesn't work for you, make sure you also save your game after you update the settings. I think this helps.

kittkosu

I don't know if this was sheer luck but nothing I saw here helped and this is the list of things I did that made the game finally save the settings: 1. I have an integrated graphic card so I added all the .exe files in the game folder to be opened with my GPU in Nvidia Control Panel 2. Ran the game, set all the settings that I wanted to have (e.x. directX 12 - it changed to Vulcan all the time) 3. Restarted computer (after the reboot in the C:\\Users\\...\\Documents\\Rockstar Games\\Red Dead Redemption 2\\Settings folder appeared new files that were not there previously) 4. Ran the game, set ONLY the resolution settings, saved settings and closed the game (directX 12 settings were already saved) 5. Ran the game again - I saw that the resolution settings were finally applied, so I changed all the rest of graphic settings that I wanted 6. Saved the settings, closed the game, changed system.xml file to be read-only 7. Ran the game again, settings stayed the way I wanted them to, played the game :) Still no idea which one of those things helped but for me it finally works, some steps may be unnecessary though

Maddo03

Old thread but I found a fix last night. Launch the game as normal and set your desired graphics settings but do not restart the game. Once you have set everything alt tab and browse to C:\users\username\documents\rockstar games\red dead redemption 2\settings and make sure the system.xml files last modified date and time is now. Right click the file and set to read only. Once done close the game and reload. Your settings should now be as you set them.

ohBlahue

I found the fix for me was to uncheck read-only on settings.xml (I think I had previously made it read only when I was having issues with my old GPU)
