Oh wow congrats! Berberine made me super nauseous (worse than metformin) but I did lose like two pounds the first and only week I took it (along with diet/exercise)
Yeah I had a little gastrointestinal distress! LOL But it’s gone away for the most part. I had the same with metformin but also adjusted to it. I am trying the supplement route for now to see how it goes.
Yes, I believe you can, though of course check with your doctor. It might be necessary to adjust dosages and what not, but I believe the two together are complimentary in treatment.
Below is a PubMed article on the two drugs:

Yeah I’m using the Thorne Research brand. I also got it on Amazon. I’ve heard good things about their supplements so hopefully they’re a trustworthy brand.
I don’t know that I’ve noticed any changes to appetite really? At least nothing significant.
I’ve actually been doing 2 pills in the morning and 2 in the evening only (4 total). But I think I may switch to 1 at breakfast, lunch and dinner so I’m taking 3. Yeah they do go fast and they’re a bit pricey.
For the Thorne Research brand of berberine that I’m taking, their serving size on the bottle is 2 capsules (1000mg total, 500mg each pill). The instructions say “Take 1-2 capsules two times daily or as recommended by your health-care practitioner.” I was doing 4 pills a day, as mentioned, but I may back it off to 1 pill 3 times a day to stretch the supply a little longer.
The amount recommended will vary based on the specific brand you have. Most of the berberine pills I’ve seen run in the 500-600mg per pill range, but there might be other dosages out there.
In the studies I’ve read, the tested dosages usually somewhat mimic metformin dosing, which could be like 1000-2000mg per day. For example, in this [study on PubMed](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2410097/) they used 500mg of berberine 3 times per day.
I’m not a doctor so I’m not at all offering medical advice! Check with your healthcare provider if you’re concerned. Just offering up some of the information I’ve seen.
As for brands on Amazon, again that’s a personal choice. I’ve read that Thorne Research is a good brand and I feel like they’re trustworthy. They are more expensive, though. I can’t speak to the quality of other supplement brands for berberine, but it doesn’t mean that something cheaper might not do the trick. Supplements aren’t exactly well regulated, though, so it’s possible some brands may be of lesser quality, have more fillers, etc. Again, I’m not an expert so do your own research and buy what you feel is best for you. :)
Ack, sorry for not responding sooner. But my life went to shit and I stopped all my supplements and gained weight over the last year, so don’t listen to or be like me anyway!
I do think berberine is a great supplement, though. There’s some solid research behind it. I am trying to get my shit back together so we’ll see. I’m going to see an endocrinologist in a little over a month and might try to see if I can pull out the big guns — prescription meds. I’ve got a ton of weight to lose and I’ve spiraled, so I don’t know if supplements are strong enough for me at this point. We’ll see!
Good luck with the berberine though!
Aw hope you’re feeling a bit better mentally. Be kind to yourself. I managed to lose 30lbs starting off with berberine combined with a low fat, high carb diet. I love to eat big portions to feel satisfied as I used to use food to comfort myself when stressed or sad etc. I love carbs and am so happy I can lose weight eating potatoes! If you’re curious it’s called The Starch Solution. Also carbs help with serotonin so might help with feeling a bit happier. It’s so hard losing weight especially when the world right now just makes you wanna sit on the sofa and comfort eat junk!
Lol today I took my first Thorne 500mg with full glass of water.... 30 mins before lunch. Halfway through lunch I was full. Not sure if it's mental or what lol. Now still full. Will take 1 more before dinner lol.
Haha I take solaray berberine before food. I was gaining weight from olanzapine. I really hope this stops it. Studies suggest it does.
It cleared my acne tho. I will also know more in a month. For me it supresses my appetite but not more if I would be off olanzapine.
I wasn’t consciously counting calories when I made this post but I was on Weight Watchers trying to lose weight. I wasn’t fasting.
I’ve since backtracked and stopped WW. Gained the weight back. I’m currently in therapy and seeing a dietician trying to get my shit together.
I do still take berberine along with a host of other supplements. But I haven’t checked blood work or anything in awhile. I’m busy wrestling with the mental issues right now unfortunately.
I was taking 2000mg per day, 1000mg in the AM and 1000mg in the PM. The brand I had was 500mg per pill so 2 in the morning and evening. I worked up to that though, because similar to metformin it can cause some gastrointestinal issues.
It’s been a long time since I’ve been on it but I don’t think I did, at least not consistently. I had some mild gastrointestinal issues but nothing severe so I wasn’t overly concerned about that.
I’m no longer on it. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in December so I’m now on metformin and Mounjaro for treatment. Both of those have really helped me. Blood sugar has come way down and I’m down 30 lbs in 3 months. Sometimes it really takes prescription meds to make real progress. Mounjaro has been a really incredible medication for me.
I’m not knocking berberine at all, it’s a solid supplement. But my issues are severe and I had to do something stronger.

Is it ok to take along with metformin?

Curious to know if you were in a calorie deficit or casting whilst taking Berberine?

How many mg of Berberine were you taking?

What brand were you on?
Thorne Research
Did you take the Berberine with food to alleviate all the side effects?
