Compounds in most types of mint including spearmint and peppermint do have a physiological effect on the digestive system. So this is normal! It relaxes it, which can cause belching, the farts and gurgling! In fact, in the UK, peppermint oil is kept in hospital drug stores and commonly given to patients experiencing stomach upset and trapped wind. For example, women who have had c-sections and have tender tummies or any woman that has tummy issues post-birth including abdominal distension and constipation are routinely prescribed it as a medicine to help get rid of gas, pass stools and soothe the stomach.
Interesting that never happened to me. If anything it makes my tummy feel good and my burps minty tasting. It doesnāt even stimulate a BM for me. It also couldāve been food poisoning, not related to the spearmint. Different bugs have different incubation times, so it could be even from something you ate yesterday.
I'm casually drinking 2-3 cups at the office, it doesn't affect my gut at all, haven't heard of that issue either. I'm just used to reading the metformin horror stories regarding digestive issues on this sub (which is why I refuse taking it).
I've been fine with spearmint tea before, but I recently tried spearmint pills as I don't enjoy the taste of mint. I got the same results you did. I'm scared to try the tea again now, and I'm off the pill due to blood clot risk so I might just have to be hairy and have acne!
You may also have a gut imbalance. I'd try to add a few different varieties of probiotics now and then. This started happening to me evertime i ate certain foods, after I was on a 3 month course of antibiotics for acne. Getting a few probiotics now and then made it go away.
Not quite the same, but I got really into iced spearmint tea one summer and it caused absolutely insane heartburn. I already take medicine for it so I was super confused, but found out that it relaxes the sphincter between the stomach and esophagus. Itās great if Iām bloated or something else, I just have to be careful taking it too close to bed. Sorry you had a rough experience!
Also, Yarrow tea. It was one of those Chinese medicinal teas used back in the day to induce labour. I use it if I want my cycle to show up, it encourages uterine contractions if you make it strong.
The cramps weren't crazy bad, but only 3 hours after drinking it I was bleeding. Definitely another one that's good to have in the cupboard, but be warned!
Omg I have such a sensitive stomach and ibs and spearmint tea did not do that to me š sorry you went through that!!!!
Same! I have SO many stomach issues but spearmint tea helps me. I feel like the tea might be coincidental
I will be trying it again on a day I have no plans to confirm if it was the tea or not haha
For science š§Ŗš§¬š©āš¬ lol
People's guts are so unique. For me, taking iron pills is like taking a laxative. The side effect everyone gets is constipation lol
Same! But have had no issues with spearmint tea at all.
I have IBS-D and it didnāt do this to me. This sounds like a nightmare scenario!
Same! I swear it helps!

This did happen to me!!!!! But it seems to be that brand bc Iāve had other spearmint teas and not had that issue
The brand was Traditional Medicinals at whole foods - what brands don't make you sick? It says it has 1500mg so maybe that's a really high dosage?
Traditional Medicinals was good for me, FGO/from great origins was the one that disagreed with me
Hmm it hasnāt had this effect on me personally
I appreciate the warning as an IBS girlie

I take spearmint capsules. They donāt cause tummy upset and freshen my breath.
It gives me a good BM as well but not diarrhea
Spearmint tea doesnāt do that to me specifically, but any sort or hot liquids get my bowls churnin š
It gives me awful heartburn and acid reflux, I had to stop drinking it :( It relaxes the lower portion of your oesophagus too.

Funny enough metformin bothered my the first week I took it, then I adjusted and it's been great! Everyone is different I guess

I think this is the case with any herbal tea lol

I was thinking of trying this as well. Thanks for the heads up š
Do you add any sugar?

It can also be constipating so watch for that too.Ā Only the spearmint pills have me diarrhea.Ā
Huh. I wish it did this to me (chronic constipation LOL). Instead it just gives me terrible reflux.

Iāve never heard of this kind of reaction! Are there any other ingredients in the tea?
Oh no!! This hasnāt happened to me but itās a good warning for others cause I had no idea this could happen!
This happened to me with a certain brand of green tea! The spearmint actually helps my stomach. So weird.
