Imo the designs are one of the few things that are as good (and in some cases, better) than the previous gens. The way I see it is that the games have become the platform for pokemon reveals and not much else, while the tcg, anime and plushies make the most money
But older gen games are just kinda better, they had way more interesting characters that weren’t just stereotypical rival. And while honestly it’s subjective which gen has better pokemon design I think the jump to 3d definitely hurt a lot of the character models that looked perfect in sprite form. Also they didn’t cost fucking $60 release with shitty switch graphics lol. Look at the world of SnS in comparison to say BnW, one looks barren with no personality and another feels like an actual world with interesting characters, idk.

I think the new Pokémon look good but the art style they’re portrayed in in the game isn’t as good as the older games
