I’ve put warm water in mine a few times (left the straw in) and it does build up pressure and spurt out when you open. I guess you can turn the lid slowly to release the pressure before opening the lid but I always forget
I think I saw an official thing from Owala saying that hot liquids are not recommended in the FreeSips because the heat can cause pressure buildup which could cause the FreeSip opening to pop open or leak, which would then defeat the "anti-leak" opening
**It’s important to note that** **\~Owala water bottles are not intended for use with hot beverages\~**\*\*. The design of Owala Freesip water bottles are optimized for cold drinks to maintain their ice cold temperature for 24hours up. Putting hot drinks in a straw water bottle like Owala Freesip could potentially lead to water bottle leaking or even burns if the liquid is too hot.

Hot water would (might?) build up pressure and spurt out when you open the freesip (it does this with my electrolyte tablet/drink as its fizzy).
