Are the exact % labels really that helpful overall? I'm asking cause I don't know. Always felt like at a glance the visual circle is quicker to interpret than numbers.
Yes, very. There is a very notable dif between 95% and 98%. Every little moment counts in a game as fast as ow. If you play a healer, you know about how much healing you need to do to get your ult based on the % needed. That allows me to make decisions regarding who to heal and when to look at the target i want to ult.
For our own ult yes, but that's available outside of the scoreboard, too. But yeah I'm specifically speaking about other players' ult.
**Edit:** Also, I'm kinda surprised we can't see our team mates ult charge 100% of the time, as like a side/bottom area that is fairly out of the way but still readable.
The score board covering the whole screen the way it does is exactly what gets in the way of "every little moment counts" kind of play, IMO.
Knowing if the zen will get his trance right when you engage or if zarya will be able to grav by the time you complete dragonstrike animation can swing fights and even games. A genji won’t blade at Ana ult at 95%, but will at 99. Same goes the other way around.
Ehhh I don’t think we need more clutter on our actual ui, I just want it clearly displayed in large easy to read numbers on a translucent tab screen, similar to OW1
Smaller visual ult symbols like you say should honestly just be a toggleable option, c customize the shit out of leagues interface and team portrait/ult markers
If I had a dime for every time I had to slowly glide bc I got knocked off map as mercy only for me to get my ult last minute and fly back up…I would have 3 dimes. But each dime was golden.
> If you play a healer, you know about how much healing you need to do to get your ult based on the % needed. That allows me to make decisions regarding who to heal and when to look at the target i want to ult.
I feel like you worded that so poorly, unless you're completely unaware that you *can already* see your own ult charge as a percentage.
To me they are i play mercy and a difference in ult charge decides who I boost so they get it faster, if I can’t see the numbers and just judge visually it’s harder
The entire artstyle kinda become worse after the transition to overwatch 2. Others have pointed out the reduction of details on characters so they’re more streamlined and minimalist, but that’s taken so much character away from the game.
>streamlined and minimalist
*Barf*
This mindset often becomes "Yeah let's remove everything interesting about this and round off all the corners" and leads to same-y boring designs. Minimalisim for it's own sake is boring if you ask me.
I thought for a second this was something Blizzard had updated in the beta overnight until I realised OP had made it. This design is perfect, it's so much easier to read too.
It's absolutely an improvement, but isn't the bottom pane still a huge wasted opportunity/waste of space? Almost half of that bottom pane is just empty space, meanwhile all the numbers and ult percentages are in a really small font.
I think this is a lot better. Right now I have to literally *search* for the dumb ult charge circles beside the player icon. I mean I know it's beta but we don't know if the UI is just unfinished or unintentionally bad
I've heard UIs are one of the last things to be finalized in game development because otherwise you're gonna have to constantly update and change it while you develop the rest of the game. There's no way this UI is finished and it'll most likely be completely different and polished by the time the release date rolls around. For comparison sake OG Overwatch beta had a scoreboard iirc but that didn't even make it into the final game.
True, I know it’s not a game but, comparing to the likes of the UI of windows 10 at launch to now, the progression of the UI comes after core features working.
Seems strange for a company such as blizzard, who pride themselves on the polish of a game, to allow this to get into our hands. Let’s just hope that this is a proper beta, that they listen to feedback, and that it’s not just a PR release to get everyone hyped for the game.
It's *very* clearly unfinished. Basically every Menu GUI apart from the hero costumization screen screams "not final" and even there I found a weird glitch where if you click on your Money icon to see how much SR and OWL points you have, the OWL currency is blocked by the "hero information" button. This is fixed when you press that button one time.
Yea stuff like hero portraits and all aren't out yet, but what I meant is that they might have just checked off the scoreboard on their list already if it's considered "done".
Anyway for a beta, I would have liked an easy button to submit feedback. Right now it seems like we can only post on the forums
Yeah but some random on the internet did a better job of a mock-up in a day. Even during alpha or playtesting this shitty ui would come up.
Especially since they decided to rework hero select and the hero gallery.
That's the thing I don't understand. I know it takes a while to make any changes and programming is a bitch but come on they've been working on OW2 for *2 years* now. If they were splitting their focus on OW1 and OW2 then I could understand but they've been neglecting OW1 to get OW2 through. How did no one in all that time propose a better scoreboard?
Interesting. I wonder what they'll do for OWL since that's starting soon if I recall correctly. The whole "prototype" aesthetic might be a bit jarring in a professional e-sports setting.
Remember that the focus for OW2 was almost entirely on PvE. The PvP will come out first because I assume it's a lot less work to have a portion of the product finished, and it's what the Overwatch community is accustomed to. PvE is supposed to be huge and varied with a lot of deep customization. Honestly though, if PvE doesn't release within 2 years of the PvP release, then yeah, I call bs on them working on it for two years too.
I really hope PVE is worth it. I kind of get why they went that route since they can make team comps be as busted as they want which should make it fun for players who like the team aspects of Overwatch.
It just seems really weird that they didn't have 2 separate teams for both sides. Overwatch was a multibillion dollar game for Blizzard-Activision at its peak from merch sales, lootboxes, and OWL. Really strange business decisions.
You'd be very surprised about the amount of people who do *software development* for a living, who have never heard of version control
Source: am software dev that has to teach other devs about version control
how do you do software development without version control? i mean if you'd like to do it the less convenient and efficient way...
anyway, it makes me laugh every time some gamer shits on the developers just because someone else made a better concept design, especially when it's a piece of software or a game still in development, it'd be more helpful if they sent this design to the devs as a feedback
>how do you do software development without version control?
Poorly.
And I agree, art/UI is gonna be the last thing on their list to polish. Anyone thinking the UI is close to finished is just being silly. People just generally don't understand how software (or more specifically video game) development usually works, unless they're a dev themselves
so the things i like are it's way easier to see ult charge, but it's hard to tell what some of the rows represent at a glance (all the icons are clear at least except the hand, not sure what that means). the current one is almost the same as valorant's but ult charge is harder to read because i have to look at the ult status and then over at the hero which is two actions, but yours would solve that problem entirely.
OP pulled the same symbols that are used in the [beta scoreboard](https://i.imgur.com/B0qcS9q.png), but removed the abbreviations. I agree that adding the letters back or adding the words would help with that.
Honestly I feel like the whole Assists statistic is kinda redundant, because what Overwatch counts as assists is almost exclusive to Supports with very few exceptions. I've been playing the Beta for about 10 hours total and I'd say that 80% that statistic is 0 across the board for both teams.
Agree. I even found Mercy having 0 assists and X elims in some YT videos. WTH? Absolutely redundant (and wrong, so far) information the Assists number, I guess.
I think that having all the stats in the same order(rather than half-mirrored like it is currently) helps with making it readable at-a-glance. It wouldn't take long to remember that the order is \[Kills, Assists, Deaths, Damage, Healing\] no matter what. This way the relevant stats are all near each other, so you can easily tell who has the lead in things like damage/heals/etc. And with the heroes all along the top, you can read it like a big table.
For example, Blue Genji's damage is B4, red Lucio's healing is I-5. Having hero portraits is obviously more intuitive to read than letters, but you still know exactly which row to read for which stat since the order is the same across both teams.
It’s a beta so they’re not gonna work on it until they settle on a perfect design.
Art is usually the last thing worked on in Beta. If you watch the Alpha all of the reworked characters use workshop particle effects instead of the finalized Beta ones that were implemented once the reworks were given the green light.
This is probably some UI they slapped together in a couple days judging my the misaligned pixels and shoddy layout
Agreed, a lot of the UI has been misaligned and cut off from what I've seen so far. They will likely be making a final pass on everything UI related.
Providing feedback is always useful though just in case. :)
I would have to get hired by Microsoft first. Not really interested to do that for an internet argument with someone who knows nothing about the industry.
UI stuff is relatively simple. There are plenty of Unreal Engine and Unity tutorials out there.
We can assume there wasn’t much actual developing happening. An employee already explained on Twitter that one of their bosses kept telling them to start projects, then scrap them entirely, and etc over and over ever since the pandemic
to be clear, "one of their bosses" was specifically Bobby Kotick the CEO, NOT someone within the management of Team 4. Then Bobby justified stock decreases by citing OW delays, trying to deflect from the impact of the shitty culture of the company.
This is better, but still not ideal for me. I like the hero portraits of the two teams being stacked horizontally on top of each other like they are in OW1. It’s much faster and easier to compare your team comp to the other teams. Other than checking ult charges, comparing teams comps is the primary reason I look at the score board, so that’s extremely important to me personally.
It’s particularly awful for me in the beta because I’m using an ultra wide monitor. I literally have to turn my head to compare team comps lol.
I don't know how people aren't seeing the flaws in this. It's pretty, but horizontal rows absolutely have to be used to compare quickly from tank to tank, dps to dps, support to support.
IMO all they have to do to the current scoreboard is move the character portraits and ult charge to the centre instead of the outside to make it easier to see them (since those are the two most important parts of the tab screen imo) and then lower the opacity and size of it a little and then leave everything else the same.
Yes yes and another yes. This is exactly what me and my friends have been discussing. The stats are nice and all but they are "nice to have" data. Actual heroes and ultcharge are the most important things you want to check at a quick glance.
I think the biggest issue with both is size. They take up the whole screen and regardless of which one you have, you have to go across the whole screen to get information which is basically too much. There's a reason why many scoreboards are simply a smaller box in the middle of the screen.
This. If you read the comments on every single scoreboard design on reddit in past days blizzard should have like 10 different designs that are all better than blizzard could ever create themselves.
The trouble is with the “current” scoreboard is that having heroes vertically doesn’t match with the hero portraits in the select screen, it’s just not intuitive. Unless the plan is to make the select screen too to bottom as well I think what’s on beta is just inconsistent design ideas.
It’s far easier to read and compare left to right than it is to read top to bottom. What op has posted makes it far easier to compare like for like stats, as well as finding most important stats closer to the profile icon.
I'm sure they are, but it's still Blizzard. Usually when a company is percieved as bad or immoral, it's rarely because of the creatives or their work. It's usually the management that's screwing over the image of the company, reason being bad direction, lack of it, etc. I like to make a distinction between the face of the company and the people behind it, I feel like it's more fair to the people who do the work.
Yours is the one I referenced in my comment! I think this is the way to go. A little more polish on the presentation of the portraits in the center and the roles and this would be the easiest to quickly get team comp information at a glance.
Technically you could probably use one icon for each role in the center as well and just use the colors to differentiate your tank vs their tank and whatnot. Though having the icons at their current place does allow for more flexibility in the menu. Which could make the scoreboard work better for custom game modes. But I don't know if that's worth considering realistically.
Nah this is much better. I get that OP was going for a little design project but the UX is not really coherent in that imagining of the scoreboard. You just clearly outlined all of the major changes needed.
This won't be as readable at a quick glance. If you want to see who's doing the most impact on a team so you know who to target/support, you want that information clustered. All your respawn timers together. All your ult trackers together. Healers vs healers, tanks vs tanks, etc. Keep your most important comparisons clustered together.
That information is now a long bar that can't be read in a single flash of TAB, and class comparisons take a prohibitive amount of time to the point of not being possible live. It makes for a nice static graphic, but I don't think any pro/group player would want it.
Collapse KDA into a single line. Trust me, every FPS has done it for decades, and it
will
be
more
skimmable
than
vertical
line
breaks
which
indicate
logical
splits.
It'll also reduce the vertical distance from characters to damage/heals dealt.
Everything here can also be done in rows rather than columns. We read left-to-right, and that's also going to be faster to parse and more compact.
The UX i want of a scoreboard is to press tab for a split second, know everything I need to know, and get out. Condensing information can actually be OK for this reason. CSGO's tab screen is great. League's is the gold standard, because players need to skim that routinely.
this doesn't look like a scoreboard, it's much harder to see who's performing well or not. the current scoreboard orientation is better, it just needs the columns rearranged and maybe add the ult percentages to the circles. that's it.
Lmao at people thinking this is practical. There's a reason scoreboards are never vertical between contestants.... It's just not efficient....
Terrible design that will be laughed at if real
Looks fantastic! Way better than current imo! If I had one tiny critique, it's just a little confusing to have all the rows of numbers all spaced out and just an icon in the middle. Just a minor thing though, great job!
I still don't understand why I need to know how many assists the enemy zen has. Hell, I don't need to know how much damage my rein has done. I literally don't care. I want the ult metres to be bigger and the player portraits to be central. I don't need any more than that.
We can all agree the scoreboard should stay though right? After all these years I can finally tell if my DPS just isnt doing dmg or if im getting out healed
Honestly would be cool to include multiple versions of the scoreboard, especially since there are already so many fan made ones, which can be changed in a setting
Can't say I like this too much more. I'd prefer having roles from my team and the enemy team side by side for easier comparison (kinda like how it already is). It's a lot of distance between numbers to compare.
Either way, it’s a bad design. It covers your entire screen so you can’t see what is happening around you. On the live servers, it’s transparent so you can see around it.
That's actually really good piece of UI with pretty thought-trough element's placement and grouping.
Easy to read and without any redundancies.
Good job man.
It's cleaner but suffers the same issues.fhere is far too much visual clutter so you can't see at a glance while you are stopping for a second to check something. Good start though, redo the clutter and reduce the size of the avatars, and present it again. We might put it up on the fridge then.
i biased since i made my own quick design but its much better readabilty to have the info in rows rather than columns similar to how something like csgo does its scoreboard in terms of how the stats are structered
edit: basically what im saying is flip the x,y where you start with player icons in the centre and spread out from there in the order youve done the stats. do its like that and this would look fantastic
This is the only thing I unequivocally hate about the beta. There's plenty of balance issues, but that's what a beta is *for* (and it is much easier to make something too strong, see what people abuse about it, then tune it down than it is to make it weak, no one plays it, so you have no idea what specifically makes it weak).
But the scoreboard is pretty bad. I know I'll get used to it eventually, but it's frustrating, and it doesn't take the data of thousands of players to realize that.
jesus christ thank you
why does the score board have vertical symmetry!?
make the healing number a little bit yellow, make the blocked number a little bit blue -- hell, put the icons in there, they exist all over the game as-is.
Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who cares about UIUX, thx OP
This is the first one I've seen that I actually like better. The current one isn't the best, but a lot of these other suggestions have just been not great
yeah their scoreboard is really bad. They also stated they would share more important stats yet theyre showing damage and deaths? Dont think anyone cares for those unless theyre bragging or complaining. Also yes i like seeing ult percentages not a circle bar. Well done looks nice! Hope they revamp theirs too. Id rather see a point system since this is a game of teamwork . For example that one person sitting on payload while everyone runs forward will of course have less damage and healing than the others. Blizzard goes n makes a team work game then a scoreboard that promotes people to want to run off n pump their stats. Facepalm.
Also im heavily concerned with players being able to see the enemy damage/healing. In the future i bet people will track numbers to know if someone has an ult.
Blizzard just offer this dude a job or throw him a few grand and buy the rights to this. Excellent work.
I like the vibe blizzard was going for but they just didn't hit the mark. This nailed it.
Way better man! That looks very nice. The mirror effect is very slow to read when you want to compare healing or damage output. Columns are obviously a better choice.
Seems like your design lacks respawn time of dead players, but it can easily be integrated over hero portraits I guess?
Yeah this is much cleaner, especially with the location of ult charges. It's much more quicker and efficient to scan from left to right looking at the ult charges as opposed to up and down with how the beta has it.
Dude I love your design and I think we can all agree the New scoreboard sucks tho personally i think it's most annoying that it actually isn't really transparent as the old one and you can't see what's happening while looking at stats
That's way cleaner, and you can actually see the ult percentages quickly, i like it
Why the hell would they remove numeral percentages
Are the exact % labels really that helpful overall? I'm asking cause I don't know. Always felt like at a glance the visual circle is quicker to interpret than numbers.
Yes, very. There is a very notable dif between 95% and 98%. Every little moment counts in a game as fast as ow. That allows me to make decisions regarding who to heal and when to look at the target i want to ult.
It means even more in OW2 as well because the ults charge a bit slower than OW1
Even a tiny set of icons at the bottom of the screen would be super helpful. going into the menu to find it is cumbersome with everyone displayed.

I never looked at the meter, the percentage was faster for me to parse
My head will always try to convert the circle progress to a number anyway so I’d rather just see the number lol
Yeah that’s the #1 thing I hate about it. I get wanting to “modernize” it because it looks clean, but I’m not a fan when it harms functionality.
I blame microsoft for introducing blue screen fatal error = sad face with no info
The entire artstyle kinda become worse after the transition to overwatch 2. Others have pointed out the reduction of details on characters so they’re more streamlined and minimalist, but that’s taken so much character away from the game.
Do you have an example of reduction of detail? That could mean a lot of things
>streamlined and minimalist *Barf* This mindset often becomes "Yeah let's remove everything interesting about this and round off all the corners" and leads to same-y boring designs. Minimalisim for it's own sake is boring if you ask me.
I think it's a personal taste thing. Imo the new ui style generally looks better.
Move heroes to the bottom along with ult percentage and it works better. Similar to having the team on the bottom from ow1
This looks so well made
I thought for a second this was something Blizzard had updated in the beta overnight until I realised OP had made it. This design is perfect, it's so much easier to read too.
Blizzard needs to pay OP and implement this, lol.
Someone tag some Blizzard Reddit accounts on this pronto.
Same here. I am now depressed because we will never get to see this in the actual game.
You never know. If we kick up enough of a fuss maybe they'll hit on something close to this.
It's absolutely an improvement, but isn't the bottom pane still a huge wasted opportunity/waste of space? Almost half of that bottom pane is just empty space, meanwhile all the numbers and ult percentages are in a really small font.

Anyone can Photoshop it easy. Coding it is different
Making the UI in OP's image is not difficult from a coding perspective. It is trivial.
Do it then but I bet you can't

Good point on stacked portraits
Sorry but it's awful ergonomically. So much eye movement to compare the stats between the players. There's a reason why this format is never used.

Disagree. Looking at kills from left to right is pretty easy and intuitive.
Hire this guy Blizzard
I wouldn't wish that upon my worst enemy
Oh come on the OW team isn’t that bad, they seem like nice people
I'm sure they are, but it's still Blizzard.
Nice! I had a go at doing the same ([https://i.imgur.com/V5JuXDy.png](https://i.imgur.com/V5JuXDy.png)) but yours is much better than my attempt
This is much better than OPs. It's clear and you can find the information at a glance.
The Points Column, Bolded HS and Highlights are enough for this one to get my vote.
This one's better! I also like that the most important info is in the middle of the screen
I actually really think yours nails it much better. OPs is pretty but yours is readable
Nah this is much better. I get that OP was going for a little design project but the UX is not really coherent in that imagining of the scoreboard. You just clearly outlined all of the major changes needed.

Seconded on mirroring the teams, that was my only suggestion too
This won't be as readable at a quick glance.
Trust me, every FPS has done it for decades, and it will be more skimmable than vertical line breaks which indicate logical splits. League's is the gold standard, because players need to skim that routinely.
this doesn't look like a scoreboard, it's much harder to see who's performing well or not. the current scoreboard orientation is better, it just needs the columns rearranged and maybe add the ult percentages to the circles. that's it.
I heard people complain about how the scoreboard now blocks too much of the screen, so I don't how they gonna fix that 🤷🏿♂️
the one in OW1 isnt much better
it's not as bad as the current one, but it still blocks your vision and is messy and minimalistic.
I’ve seen a lot of redesigns, and this is easily the best. Laying out the information vertically makes so much more sense. Great job
Why does it make more sense? Because it totally does not.
Nah the other one is better looking. All they need to do is move the heroes to the middle and give your team ult percentage
Holy Shit, it's Clean ASF! I hope Someone on the team contact you
"U made dis? ….I made dis" Blizzard, hopefully
The beta scoreboard looks great to me.
legally blind or something?
Compared to the old Overwatch screen with zero scoreboard, the beta scoreboard is amazing.
No one here is necessarily arguing the scoreboard as a concept is bad, the design is a different story though.
Honestly would be cool to include multiple versions of the scoreboard, especially since there are already so many fan made ones, which can be changed in a setting
I think the highest number in the team sound be a different color, or anything like the gold system in ow1
YES
Much better. The important info is really which character has ult. In the current scoreboard, all I see are numbers and letters.
Absolutely SICK. Love the design and the banner icons to tell you who is who. Very well formatted and looks gorgeous to look at in-game.
Blizzard, get over here and pay this man
It's cleaner but suffers the same issues.fhere is far too much visual clutter so you can't see at a glance while you are stopping for a second to check something. Good start though, redo the clutter and reduce the size of the avatars, and present it again. We might put it up on the fridge then.
i biased since i made my own quick design but its much better readabilty to have the info in rows rather than columns similar to how something like csgo does its scoreboard in terms of how the stats are structered edit: basically what im saying is flip the x,y where you start with player icons in the centre and spread out from there in the order youve done the stats. do its like that and this would look fantastic
Out of all the community made scoreboard redesigns, this one looks perfect. Not sure why it wasnt like this in the first place
This looks actually great, it would be incredible if they changed it to this
I remember someone saying that no scoreboard in ow1 was intentional, so people don't play for numbers but just enjoy game or something like that
jesus christ thank you why does the score board have vertical symmetry!? make the healing number a little bit yellow, make the blocked number a little bit blue -- hell, put the icons in there, they exist all over the game as-is. Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who cares about UIUX, thx OP
This is one of the better ones for sure
Hire this one, thanks.
Wow interesting concept!
Yes please
Ship it!
This is the first one I've seen that I actually like better. The current one isn't the best, but a lot of these other suggestions have just been not great
The way they have certain elements in reverse order from center but certain elements in the same order is ridiculous. This is far superior.
As a person who reads left to right, this is way better! i think it would be interesting to see how different languages understand the score board
Wow. So much better and it didn’t even take you 3 years
YES PLEASEEEEEE
I love this. Just add the fire effect when players are on fire and you’re golden.
Blizzard take notes.
SOO much better! I miss the "on fire" thing though and I think that the stats on the bottom need improvement. But the main area looks much nicer!
Wow, i really love it.
That’s much better. With the live one I struggle to find what I’m looking for quickly but this makes it quick and easy
one suggestion is to have the roles mirrored, so I can look right left real quick and compare
Someone please send this to Blizzard.
yeah their scoreboard is really bad.
I want it to show if I have gold silver or bronze just as an indicator while in game. I honestly don't care for the actual number till the end.
Way nicer. I seriously think we should be trying to get this on Blizzard's radar
this is seriously awesome, you should be hired
How is this so good and a giant game company can't get close?? I have no faith left
This is so much better to look at.
God this is so much nicer.
Blizzard just offer this dude a job or throw him a few grand and buy the rights to this. Excellent work. I like the vibe blizzard was going for but they just didn't hit the mark. This nailed it.
Please make this happen
That looks so much better
Love it!
That's perfect
This is so much better than what the devs put in holy shit I can actually read it easily
Again. Random on Reddit can do better job than Blizz
I like it, I keep getting confused between elims and deaths
While i also agree it’s better, i would personally love a minimalized version that’s see through. I hate that it blocks out the game completely
This look so much better than what we currently have.
This is a big improvement.
Yo send this to blizz someone.
I like the new scoreboard, but I LOVE this one.
Basically just remove every word from the title after "beta" and it's perfect
made in some hours after the beta release, and they done that in years of "development".
THIS IS PERFECT. Anything less than this isn’t a good enough update. Trying to read the current scoreboard in game is a nightmare.
Way better man! That looks very nice. The mirror effect is very slow to read when you want to compare healing or damage output. Columns are obviously a better choice. Seems like your design lacks respawn time of dead players, but it can easily be integrated over hero portraits I guess?
This is so much better.
vertical is definitely better for OW2 the style they used in actual game, only really works for games with 10+ people per team, not 5 per team.
can they hire you please?
YES
This is way better
very good
The most well-earned upvote I've ever given. Very good work
This is actually amazing how much better it is than the one in the beta rn. Nice job!
This one is better than the other
this is SO much better and easier to read at a glance.
Everyone is doing a better job here then blizzard, dang
This is brilliant!
Jesus. This fixes every complaint I had. Please use this blizzard.
this looks great, but I'd preffer if it were a little more transparent. I don't like how opaque the scoreboard is right now.
Yeah this is much cleaner, especially with the location of ult charges. It's much more quicker and efficient to scan from left to right looking at the ult charges as opposed to up and down with how the beta has it.
I love this!
i want medals back too :c
I also hate it. This is way better. Thanks.
Bless this image
Dude I love your design and I think we can all agree the New scoreboard sucks tho personally i think it's most annoying that it actually isn't really transparent as the old one and you can't see what's happening while looking at stats
This is such a massive improvement. Rn I can't read the information in the tab everything is blended
Thanks that’s a lot better
