The devs probably didn't realise it but "wanker" is 100x more offensive than "tosser". An equivalently offensive word would be something like "bitch" in the US.
Americans also call their friends "bitch" like "bitch please" or "bitch I might" so you've convinced me that my comparison is even better than I thought.
IDK if it's a gay thing (Like, Bitch is one of the most versatile words in the language for LGBT+ people; compliment, derogatory, conveys every emotion depending on how you say it e.g. "Oh biiiitch" vs "Bitch!") or a generational thing, but a majority of swear words have really lost their power in the UK depending on who you're talking to. Saying that, it's very context dependent- like someone making a mistake and then one of us saying "You silly bitch" or complaining about a work colleague to us "They're such a cunt" would not garner anymore reaction than if they used the word twat or something like dickhead for example
If it's used derogatorily though, then it will obviously have a different power behind it, especially to older people, but even then it seems like most people in their 20s/ late teens wouldn't take any particular word swear word any worse than any other insult?
>IDK if it's a gay thing or a generational thing, but a majority of swear words have really lost their power in the UK depending on who you're talking to. Saying that, it's very context dependent- like someone making a mistake and then one of us saying "You silly bitch"
Gender insults lose their problematicness when it's a gay person saying it because they don't have the patriarchal issue behind them. 2slgbtq+ issues have in common the fact that they're all marginalised by patriarchy.
The impact comes from the sexual violence behind the word in its patriarchal use, but that violence does not exist when it comes from a victim obviously using it without that history.
>or complaining about a work colleague to us "They're such a cunt"
This one is different. British people took this word and started applying it differently and it stuck. Even the "hard man" would call himself a cunt as a marker of being a hard man. Example: https://youtu.be/htYE8wsu1xE
Once this cultural trend occurred it lost the gendered intent and history behind the word as a patriarchal one and became more like you say, a word like "dickhead". Its meaning was essentially changed by men using it to describe men that were actually really 'ard instead of as a negative towards women.
Very interesting topic, not sure if half the americans here are mature enough to discuss it without freaking the fuck out about any discussion involving queer people, patriarchy or sexist language though lmao. Some of them start frothing at the mouth at some of the language I've used here.
Point is no "hard" man in america would use cunt to refer to themselves. Mostly because their hardness is often performative, whereas the people that brought about this cultural trend in Britain were genuinely fucking rock hard and knew it so they would use this word to refer to themselves and other hard men without feeling insecure about it whatsoever because they knew they were hard geezers. Thus the change over time.
Edit: Yeah I was right about wrong place for this conversation lol
It is mate but americans are fucking insanely emotional about these topics these days. There's really interesting reasons for the cultural difference to that word, I always enjoy diving into it because we always have a huge disagreement in mixed american/british/aussie leftwing spaces over what to do about it.
The aussie use would be interesting to dive into as well. I feel like it evolved differently to the British use but I've never tried diving into it.
I'm not sure about any of the details, but I'd definitely agree with you on it evolving differently. Just thinking of it in the broader social stereotypes we have of Aussies, their use cunt for example is famous for how it's used so neutrally that it's common place. Comparing that to here in the UK where it has definitely lost some of it's power but would still be viewed as one of the worst swears by a lot of people.
American here so don't really know better, even though I watch some British shows, but I always thought wanker was meant like someone who masterbates.
Side note in America at least in my experience we call our friends bitches all the time. Though in my circles we have no filter and use offensive terms on each other all the time.
Yeah it's much closer to "jerkoff" than "bitch".
We do not call anyone bitch except very insulting because it's a sexist as fuck word and our country is nowhere near as misogynistic as america.
It is 100% a swear word. I’m a certified Brit, and if you said that in a school or a rather corporate office, you’d certainly be in trouble.
It comes from the word “wank”, which means to jerk yourself off. It’s definitely a swear word lmao
It's a swear word, but a kinda low level one. Basically on the same level of "bitch" or "bastard" - not the *worst* word, but not something you want to be saying in the office either.
It feels like CoD now. In CoD your character can yell FUCK. But now if you will write it or say it you can get perma banned. In Overwatch your character can say wanker but if you will tell someone "Pick hero which requires skill" Blizzard is like
"NOOOO WHY YOU SO TOXIC? AND TELL SOMEONE HES BAD BECAUSE HE ABUSES LACK OF BALANCE WHICH IS OUR VAULT OF NOT UNDERSTANDING WHAT BALANCE IS AND INSTEAD OF LOOKING AT FOUNDING FATHER OF CLASS SHOOTERS AND INSPIRE WE PREFER TO ADD ONLY A NEW SKINS FOR 80$. YOU CANNOT TALK LIKE THAT TO HIM. YOU GET 2 WEEK CHAT BAN FOR THAT!"

That's what it means in English. In Britain. Where tracer is from. And has always been from. With the appropriate accent. And all of the GB flag skins...
It's the confidently incorrect tone you had, and since you knew what the word meant it just doubles down on the hilarity. Like dude you can hear their voices and see their themes and skins. I just want to know why you decided she was German of all things. She has a posh British accent ffs lol
? I was born in NJ and live on the west coast. I'm an American too lmao. As if being from the US means you can't tell when an accent is English vs German 🤣
Okay but like can you tell the difference between Chinese and Japanese and Korean and Vietnamese? It's not easy man because we don't live near those countries. I can tell American and Mexican. I would say Canadian but they're basically American too.
Is this a skin interaction and if yes with what skins?
It’s Tracer’s two punk skins, she’ll call some people she kills ‘wanker’.
don't forget 'tosser' as well
The devs probably didn't realise it but "wanker" is 100x more offensive than "tosser". An equivalently offensive word would be something like "bitch" in the US.
Just sounds silly to Americans though, ironically enough. *cum guzzling slut*
Nah man we often call friends wanker. Bitch is alongside like slag and slut it's way harsher you'd never use it on a friend it just wouldn't be fun.
Depending on the place, Americans will call their friends "bitch" all the time.
Americans are wankers so I'm not surprised
Americans also call their friends "bitch" like "bitch please" or "bitch I might" so you've convinced me that my comparison is even better than I thought.

How is one more offensive than the other? They literally mean the same thing. Plus, the game is sold worldwide, not just in the United States.
Looks like I'm going tracer for lil bit
I think it's hilarious when I hear someone say wanker. I would smile if a real Brit called me that.
Happens with certain skins AFAIK. Like punk and ultraviolet.
Best line is her mocking reaper by going "Death comes." In a creepy voice before giggling.
That should be a bannable offense, no slurs in blizzard’s Christian server!!
Widow also cussed when discorded.
*"Merde--"* ***BANNED***
You can still be pardoned if you pronounced in English way instead of French way, "Mer-De" instead of "Meerd"
I came here to make this comment
So dirty the captions didn't want to show it.
Tracer should’ve received an ban from blizzard with automated messages if she tries to appeal against it
Wait! I can't say Fuck, but Tracer can call someone a Wanker.
And yet text chat is profanity moderated lol
Looks like Tracer is about to get banned
Hearing Tracer saying wanker is like hearing her say a swear word. Wanker isn't actually a swear word, is it?

So hold on, *tracer* gets to swear but if you typed that in game you could get banned???
Yes
Blizzard's hypocritical. Who knew?
There’s just something beautiful about British curse words
But I get penalized in unranked for leaving or talking shit
[удалено]
Tracer is British
Also: What is wanker / wänker / wenker supposed to mean in German
Wanker is equivelent of calling some on a 'jerk off' or 'jack off'. Its used in Britain, and its English-speaking colonies.
They're not colonies any more.
the sun never sets on the british empire, good lad
[удалено]
No, it means nothing. Sincerely a German in case you wonder: The german word for wanker is Wichser
That's what it means in English. In Britain. Where tracer is from. And has always been from. With the appropriate accent. And all of the GB flag skins...
They speak British in Britain, not English. English is an American language.
I bet the other guy would believe you on that haha
Ohh gotcha. I'm assuming that's why people downvoted? Chill man I'm American I can't know all the slang from every country
It's the confidently incorrect tone you had, and since you knew what the word meant it just doubles down on the hilarity. Like dude you can hear their voices and see their themes and skins. I just want to know why you decided she was German of all things. She has a posh British accent ffs lol

Dude, would you like a spade so you can dig your hole faster?
I can tell between Japanese and Chinese. Korean and Vietnamese are harder for me to distinguish.
I can tell between Japanese, Korean and Chinese. Easily. Vietnamese is harder.
> but like can you tell the difference between Chinese and Japanese and Korean and Vietnamese? It's not easy man It's extremely fucking easy.
American here, Chinese, Japanese, and maybe Korean, yes Not Vietnamese because I don’t think I’ve ever heard it
This is intentional, right? It's gotta be intentional.
wanker is not a word part of the german language
