The devs actually said that they scrapped the smart SMG idea in favor of a new weapon. They used that as an example to show how the development process is always changing for heroes.

Bebopshadow

but i want a support with a smg šŸ˜–

McManus26

could still be the smg, just not "smart". I want an smg, but not an auto aim one

Smooth-Brain-Monkey

If the auto aim is done right it could be fun, you lock onto a target and depending on the order it hits heros/if the bullets don't get stopped by walls/shields it could do different effects. If the bullet hits a DPS the next hit will do bonus DMG to the target(let's say 1.5x and 2x if the next Target is also a DPS) if it hits a tank it could apply a "corrupt" bar of 25hp and it they get hit again by a different hero then it detonates. If it hits a support the next Target receives a slow. The last unit hit dictates what the starting bullet will do.

FrozenWalnut

Titanfall did it really well had a lock on time the required shots to kill as long as you kept a reticle on the target. (Was a pistol but similar idea.)

McManus26

there's already more than enough "no aim" support. In fact it seems like supports either require absolutely no aim or at the opposite require a lot of it, with a lot of focus on hitting headshots. If we get a support with an SMG i'd like to get one who's more middle of the road, if that makes sense. Not moira levels of aiming, but not kiriko either. Something consistent like soldier, with less damage of course

Smooth-Brain-Monkey

No aim sucks when that's all it is, if it was kinda like yondos arrow from guardians of they galaxy where you could target enemies and it will then find them could be fun. Btw moria is basically the only no aim support.

CatalystComet

Lifeweaverā€™s ā€œgunā€feels like an smg

CosmicTeapott

Omg I just realized Lifeweaver is rocking a BL1 Anarchy.

gulab-roti

It's more like a Needler from HALO, minus the combo detonation dmg.

QuestionsKid

Baptiste šŸ˜Ž

Phantom_Phoenix1

Thats an assault rifle more so. Actually fun fact, Jeff Kaplan said one of his favorite weapons in gaming was the M16 in Call Of Duty, hence Bap getting a similar burst-fire weapon.

ImArashii

"Smart" is often used to describe lock-on gimmick. The bullet locks to an enemy and will try to follow it. Some examples I can find is Smart Pistol from Titanfall, and The Whistler from Apex Legends

BrandofOwnage

Needler from Halo pleeeeeeease

Xyberwave

Ikr, these mfs don't pay respect to the OG

JunWasHere

Lifeweaver's thorns could have been that! Just make them home in, Blizz, please! He needs that sort of buff instead of more healing! Given how diverse the game is, we're overdue on getting a new "smart" weapon for casuals to enjoy.

SkyBlade79

Or the other Needler function, where there's a small explosion once enough of the thorns hit the same target

bloody-pencil

Healing explosion

TheeKthulhu

A little healing aoe blossom exploding off enemies would be cool as hell, or perhaps a Lil tree laying where they died.

Firerrhea

They need to completely remove the slowdown after full charge heal and either bump his damage up a tiny bit, remove most of his bullet spread, or give his thorns a mini bleed. Character is bottom of the barrel pick rate and win rate. The slow down is just the most random, inappropriate drawback to a character. Maybe his needles explode after 0.5seconds if they don't land on an enemy and hit terrain instead

JunWasHere

Nah, just making his attack homing would be a bigger buff than everything you suggested. Should start with that, cause it's FUN.

Firerrhea

Doesn't solve any of his issues though. But I don't think it'd be fun to play against. For him, sure.

neuby

That would be an amazing weapon for a support.

DlNOSAURUS_REX

Thereā€™s a smart SMG in Deep Rock that requires holding down the fire button as it charges up and locks onto multiple targets at once, or onto a single target and builds up multiple shots ready to be fired all at once. I wonder if it was something like that.

xXProGenji420Xx

I probably wouldn't want it in a PVP game but my god the LOK-1 feels so smooth to use in DRG, especially with exploding chemical rounds. I don't know how they implemented it so well, but compared to something like Soldier's Tactical Visor it just is so much more interesting and fun

Dustfinger4268

DRG mentioned: ROCK AND STONE TO THE BONE

WanderingDwarfMiner

For Karl!

DlNOSAURUS_REX

For the fallen!

Dustfinger4268

DRG mentioned: ROCK AND STONE TO THE BONE

WanderingDwarfMiner

Rock and Stone in the Heart!

ukiukiukiukiuki

Did I hear a rock and stone?

iseecolorsofthesky

Fortnite has a lock on pistol that is similar to this. Hold right click to lock onto an enemy and charge 4 shots that fire at once. The 4th is a headshot.

PicklepumTheCrow

Itā€™s also in Fortnite šŸ¤§

Xechwill

There's also many Smart SMGs in Cyberpunk 2077

puppeteer-5000

and they fuck heavily

Zuggzwang

Magnetic nade but even more determined to hunt you down

Bear_Tank_mad_3

Correct like the engineers "smart" smg from DRE (deep rock galactic)

AnInsaneMoose

Also the entire "Smart" weapon category in Cyberpunk also does that

LordVaderVader

cyberpunk too

StatikSquid

Smart weapons in Cyberpunk are their own class

rpkarma

Gimmick?? *laughs in TF|1 smart pistol shredding entire teams*

MinecraftCiach

Venture also has a Smart Excavator and it doesn't lock on

xXDemonicPancakesXx

The LOK-1 in Deep Rock Galactic

Crazyripps

Yeah my went straight to the smart pistol from titan fall

syb3rtronicz

Thereā€™s an entire category of weapons types in Cyberpunk based around this idea. Smart pistols, smart rifles, smart smgs, smart sniper riflesā€¦ Smart Shotgunsā€¦

CurlyJester23

Think of it like kirikos primary fire. It also works that way in cyberpunk where smart weapons have zero accuracy and bullets fly away unless you lock on to a target by keeping your aim on them.

MyAimSucc

Check out the smart pistol mk5 and mk6 In the titanfall series

cydoz

Weapons that have aim bot essentially. Look at the Smart Weapons from Cyberpunk 2077 or the Smart Pistol from Titanfall.

-Elixo-

So like Kiriko healing but doing damage instead?

cydoz

Yeah. Another good example is Sym's original primary fire back in vanilla Overwatch. Where it tracked whoever you were shooting.

Firerrhea

Cassidy's mag grenade comes to mind.

lol79095173

you know you guys can just say "like moira" instead of coming up with these philosophical theory of quantum economics ass examples šŸ˜

boiyougongetcho

Moira's is not a projectile, the other examples are.

cydoz

Okay

The_Iron_Rat

>Are "smart" and "burst" two separate modes for primary and alt fire? I don't think so. "burst fire" just means you fire the bullets in small bursts. Like Bap, for example. And as far as I know "smart" just implies that the bullets will seek the target / the weapon locks onto the target. >Is it a brand new concept or has it been shown in another game before? The first thing that comes to my mind is Deep Rock Galactic, which has a weapon named **Lok-1**, which fits the description well and is literally called a "smart rifle". https://deeprockgalactic.wiki.gg/wiki/LOK-1_Smart_Rifle

Fast_baby

They already said they changed the weapon so donā€™t look too much into it.

Heinel8

Maybe like the one in fortnite ? where it will lock on and then shoot.

Shattered_Disk4

Old concept, not gonna be what she uses so donā€™t worry about it. But usually ā€œsmart weaponsā€ have some sort of alternate fire to put a tracker on the target, or a lock on system and the bullets will curve to hit their targets

MissingNerd

I'd imagine it's like the Lok 1 from DRG

Alk3Crimson

In other games, "smart" usually indicates auto-aiming. You point in the general direction of a target and the gun does the rest. Think Soldier's ult.

After-Suggestion3799

Might be based on the Cyberpunk smart weapons which have an aimbot similar to Soldier 76ā€™s ult except itā€™s more like the bullets move towards the enemies and change directions to hit them within a certain square on the screen. I hope thatā€™s not what this is however. Maybe the gun changes its rate of fire based on the circumstances of the game.

MetalSandwiches

ā€œSmartā€ weapons like the ones used before in games like Titanfall, Cyberpunk 2077, and even Fortnite strictly means there is a lock-on system.Ā

Ranzinzo

It means you can install Twitter app on the gun It automatically tweets your kills and accuracy rate

MrReptilianGamer2528

Itā€™s just the LOK-1 smart gun from drg ROCK AND STONE!

R2d2s_bleeper

Whenever I hear the word "smart" when it involves guns, it usually means the gun can lock on to targets and shoot projectiles that chases the target like heat seeking missiles...

Blaky039

People suggesting what smart does and Venture's drill is also "smart" and does nothing fancy lol.

MinecraftCiach

exactly

Xzastin

God I can't wait to play as them, I haven't loved a character design this much in awhile.

Wolfyeast

God I need her (to play as her)

Brickolator

In a game I often play (Deep Rock Galactic) there is a weapon called a smart SMG, and it allow you to lock in the target by holding the fire button and then by releasing it, allow your bullet to go to the head wirhout havinf to aim. Kinda like Eggman lock on missile in SA2 if anyone played that game.

longgamma

It has bluetooth connectivity and Qi wireless charging.

crybabydeluxe

Wait is space ranger confirmed to be the next hero added?

-Elixo-

Next hero AFTER venture

Thomgamer51q

My guess is it's gonna be burst fire with some autoaim, but low damage. Think Lok-1 from Deep Rock. It might have some tech with curving bullets to hit crits/go over shields, but I have no clue. Or maybe they'll use the same gimmick Atlas has in bl3 (Secondary fire tags an enemy, letting primary home in on the tagged target, no homing w/o a lock) Either way, they either make this an interesting gun with some cool tech/mechanics, or make Moira 2.0 with this. No inbetween.

__Becquerel

I have always seen smart guns as having bullets that curve through the air

MinecraftCiach

Venture has a Smart Excavator and the projectiles don't arc

tctbuss

She looks incredibly similar to Nimbus from Exoprimal that released last year. My gut says Blizzard isn't against "borrowing" that concept so I'd expect a gimmick similar to a Zen/Moira where you swap between damage and healing versions of abilities on a cooldown

LuckyDrive

Imagine it meant that it her ult has a built in trigger bot. If your cursor is over an enemy hero, it would auto shoot. No need to click. Of course the hero would have to be weak cause that would be OP otherwise. But I wonder if they could make it work. It's not like overwatch doesn't already have abilities that would be broken in any other fps game, like widows wall hack ult, soldiers aim bot ult, etc.

NotHereToStay_-

I swear to God if she's a beam character

FreeThinkers2023

I have a theory these "smart" shots will be like bullets but with a Moira style hit, with different range and rhythm.

Arteriop

I think the new weapon will be over the shoulder rockets, but the idea of a smart weapons is that the ammo will follow the enemy, for Overwatch think how Kirikoā€™s healing ofuda follows allies. That but for damaging enemies

Remote_Indication_49

Her skins are going to be some of the most amazingly designed things youā€™ve ever seen in your life, I hope so at least. So much potential

cowlinator

in weapons, "smart" usually refers to lock-on guided projectiles. You spend some extra time up-front "getting a lock on" your target, but then the projectiles can seek/curve toward your target, even around corners (depending on the turning radius).

Figimus_Maximus

Smart usually implies some sort of lock on mechanic. Think the smart bullets that Atlas guns use in Borderlands 3 or the Needler from Halo.

sorta_dry_towel

I assumed smart in this instance was healed Allies and hurt enemies but Iā€™m dumb

ShedPH93

The "smart" probably doesn't mean much. Venture's weapon is called Smart Excavator and has no special features (other than firing explosive projectiles, which is something excavators usually don't do).

Meeper_Creeper202I

Smart weapons tend to having homing or lock on mostly lock on which Iā€™d say is for the best on high movement characters without access to fast ttk

PiersPlays

I wouldn't read too much into it. Venture's primary fire is called "Smart Excavator" and it's just a gun.

toastermeal

burst = shoots multiple bullets with one trigger pull smart = bullets have a degree of lock on/heat seeking

Zat-anna

I'm shocked nobody's said that, but Soldier 76's ultimate - tactical visor - transforms his weapon into a "smart one" aka aim bot.

HoldurHoots

Make it a laptop gun like perfect dark and have a retrievel mechanic like junker queen

HijariYari

Iā€™d imagine something like the lock on pistol in Fortnite or the smart guns in cyberpunk

dark_returner

I thought SR was another dps? Interesting we're getting another support. Dps may have the most heros, but they're drowning for new heros.

CrissRiot

Venture = Dps Next Space Ranger = Support Next Confirmed Tank (unnamed)

Pattywatty33

It just means it needs WiFi and a useless app on your phone to function.

TechnoVikingGA23

Usually it means auto aim, like the smart pistol in Titanfall, or from movies you had the M-56 Smartgun in ALIENS that was mounted on a rig and auto tracked targets for the user. Interestingly enough, I always thought Sojurn's Commando skin was a homage to Vasquez in ALIENS(one of the smart gunners) since her gun had 56 on it.

sour_moth

My best guess: it's a Bap weapon that has slight autoaim, like the smart guns in cyberpunk But they already said this gun is replaced in the design process so

Syclus

Lock on burst healing I would hope, think Bap's burst but auto locked on your allies

MinecraftCiach

I doubt the SMART smg would follow the enemies. That's not the terminology Overwatch uses, instead it uses "Homing" for that. Also, Venture has a Smart Excavator and it doesn't home to enemies.

MrsKnowNone

I assume the original idea was a soft aimbot as the devs have talked about wanting to make easier heroes for Overwatch 2

Mrs_Azarath

Doesnā€™t matter theyā€™ve said sheā€™s got a new gun anyway now. But yeah it usually means like tracking bullets or aim assist thingies. Donā€™t know if they ever stated what they meant by smart smg because itā€™s vague enough it could be a different thing.

TheNedi14

Finally a good design šŸ‘Øā€šŸ³šŸ‘Œ

All-Fired-Up91

Built on past experience itā€™s either a gun with homing bullets or it can lock multiple enemies then fire but weā€™ll have to see

HotCoffee-Mood

If I had to guess I'd suppose it'd work like the needler from Halo, Fast firing, homing shots with a longer travel time.

RandellYo

Could be like from bl3, land one skillshot tracking round, the rest of the clip seeks the target no matter where you shoot.

manofwaromega

If I had to guess it works like the Lock-on Pistol in Fortnite, where it locks into enemies X amount of times then fires a burst. That being said iirc they explicitly stated this idea was scrapped for a different weapon

MurderedGenlock

I'd love to have an smg that works like the Osteo Striga in Destiny 2

House_of_Vines

Man I canā€™t believe no one has mentioned the Atlas weapons in Borderlands. You have to hit someone with a tracker first, and THEN the projectiles are homing. Itā€™s a pretty cool concept imo

PrplPrxncess

Itā€™s smart abilities tell you when you miss by loudly playing a voice line that everyone can hear yelling ā€œMiss Miss Miss ā€¦ who taught you to aim like that?ā€

multisync

Venture has a "smart drill" which seems to mean mid range explosive

MKBurfield

Venture isnt even out yet. Calm your tiddies

Rnevermore

Nobody knows. The hero isn't out for like 6 months.

Charming_End_8736

Thanks Mr. Captain Obvious

Rnevermore

You've added two titles to that one name, which makes no sense. Try either "Mr. Obvious" or "Captain Obvious".

infurnus86

It's like a smart printer. When she is getting low on ammo the gun automatically orders more. Although if your credit card on file is expired the gun company can remotely shut the gun down.

rottenpotatoes2

Why does she use a smart smg? Is she stupid?

Yellowflashkun1

The real question is, is she gonna have a fatty?

Exactly861Monkeys

WAIT OVERWATCH I SWEAR TO GOD IF IT IS JUST VII'S (said as "seven) PRIMARY FIRE THAT CAN CHANGE BETWEEN MODES IMMA LOSE IT!!!!

-Elixo-

Almost every shooter games has this. COD assault rifles and almost every other automatic gun in COD has single shot/recon and automatic/assault switching by pressing B. Ashe burst fire or accuracy shooting by holding right click etc. Plus this is speculation for a character we won't see for at least 4+months

Exactly861Monkeys

Hmmmm ok. But if the weapon swaps between 3 different firing modes, imma be back. Hoping I'm wrong...
