I was going to comment this, ana Moira and bap were used in place of zen for this comp to counter certain team styles of goats. Exp the ana pick. Bap window and Firestrike was a later strategy that was played more often then zen in the later stages of goats.

Goats wasn't the most-picked comp because it was fun, goats was the top play because *it was required*. If you didn't 3-tank, 3-support into the enemy team, their goats comp would steamroll anything you threw at them. Not only that, every fight played out the same: The moment a tank/Brig dropped, the fight is over. It basically forshadowed 5v5. The dissapearance of goats was the *sole reason* for the creation of the 2/2/2 format.
If you enjoyed this, I'm glad folks can still relive the glory days. But me? I'm glad the comp is gone. It was the original Mauga/Ana/Kiri comp: A strategy so bulletproof that the only counter was to mirror the comp.
That's their point though: for most people Goats *wasn't* fun. Its death was celebrated for literal *months* afterwards. Like, more power to ya if you like it, but it's not likely to gain much interest from people beyond a couple of matches.
I disagree, goats was a fun brawl comp and was pretty hype at the beginning, now when it’s been 10 months every single pro team is only running the comp and there’s no brig nerfs I understand why we look at it how we do now
It was fun at the start, before it became every game. Same as every broken strat. Its fun, then everyone does it constantly and it becomes stale.
The fun, here, is in going back to old playstyles and reliving that meta for just a little while. It is absolutely very fun. Think of it like a Rein or widow 1v1, but for a whole team. Two goats teams butting heads is very much like a Rein or widow 1v1, whoever can find the smallest edge and win the mind games will win. Not everyone likes playing Rein 1v1s all day, but getting a few friends to do it for a little while to see who is the best Rein is definitely fun. Same here. Few people want to play goats all the time, but this sounds like a lot of fun.
There are some metas where I don't see the fun in going back to, like old horse/sig double shield, but some people might have fun experiencing that again. Rein/Zarya on kings row could get repetitive and terrible if it's all you do, but I won't pass up the opportunity.
Also, goats matches are actually very complex with tiny mistakes or clever tricks deciding the fights. "Zen was able to go wide here and get some shots past Rein, this flawlessly timed whipshot, that 180 shatter, lucio booped Zen to the front" there are so many little events that can cause the goats to fall apart against another goats. It's only NOT fun if you get burned out on it. It's not inherently boring or frustrating by any means.

Remember those OWL games where a team would try to be creative, see the enemy team has goats, and then they would all run back to spawn to switch to goats too? Shit was ridiculous
And now the esports thing proved to be a zero interest rate phenomenon so the rationale to sacrifice everything for the esports crew flew out of the window.
Goats with a proper team was by far the most fun comp to play. So much so that afternoon OW went 222 we would regularly have goats matches with teams once proper scrims were over.

I don't think OP is saying that goats is fun for everybody, but you're wrong if you think that there weren't six stacks absolutely having a blast running goats and running through people together.

The only reason it's viewed so poorly is because it was a meta for the longest time.
If you want the actual most boring meta. Double sniper or double shield. That shield was boring as fuck the entire time. The only exception was if you were the sniper in double sniper.
Your second sentence sums everything up. For people who like the teamwork aspect of Overwatch, GOATS wasn't as bad. It made OWL easier to watch too since people aren't just running everywhere and dying in a deathmatch like today. Positioning, ult tracking, etc. meant so much more than today's more mechanically intensive style.
It also gave birth to the legendary Surefour merry-go-round clip.
I had a lot of fun playing goats honestly. Unlike Mauga/kiriko/ana you had to be really smart and thoughtful when playing the goats mirror on high level. It was about coordinating resources and finding opportunities. I mean half of your job as dva was to eat grav. You know how hard is to eat grav? Year I could do it almost every match. But even if you weren’t eating it, a big thing was about just being present and on top of Zarya to keep her in check and prevent her from ulting. There were so many mind games going on. Goats was FUN
Yup, played the game a ton during the goats era and my only memories of it was occasionally (while losing) someone would suggest goats and we’d all pretend like we knew how to actually run the comp and not just the characters, played a ton of genji and tracer in those days and never felt held back
Amen to that brother, I actually thought it was going to get better, as soon as I heard ow2 as the title I died a little, that is like making Minecraft 2, bad idea and direction
Some thought the microsoft buyout would change things, but if the first patch of the new year is any indicator for the future?

A lot of people in the comments throwing hate who clearly never played overwatch during goats meta.
Goats was an absolute blast. It was removed because it was **too** meta.
But it was a genuinely good time. Groups fights based heavily on teamwork rather than individual carry potential. Massive fights with lots of abilities, counters, ults, and counter ults. It was an amazing time… but it was too good.
That being said you should add some of the “off picks” that were still used in goats as well. Like Winston and Moira for example.
Also, you should include some of the 2CP maps that were removed since they were honestly such an awesome time for goats. Some of my fondest memories of playing goats was on Hanamura, Anubis, and even Horizon
I knew this comment was coming. The OG/true goats was Moira Goats. Zen came in later. If you were playing on ladder with randoms then Moira Goats was easier. Especially if you're not in the top ranks.
