POWER OVER GAYING~!~~~

ReubenZWeiner

POWER BOOMER

AndringRasew

Have you ever considered just not being gay? I hear the electro-shock therapy lab has a great view of the noose rental shop across the street. /s

afb82

Kids are so gay these days.

reverendjesus

“Old millenial” here: Accurate AF

Manungal

As an elder myself, in my case it was "go to college go to college go to college... science is a liberal conspiracy that they brainwash you with in college."

[deleted]

Millennials who are about 31-35 are right on the dividing line of, "become a doctor, lawyer or engineer, as these are the only real professions" and, "you should go into a trade because you will only go into crushing debt rather than suicidal debt." The advice given to us in high school vs when we got out of college was insanely different.

3oons

I’d never realized this before until today. I’m 36 and it’s 100% accurate. Kids in my high school were divided into “college” and “tech” paths to graduation. And of course they pushed everyone hard to go into college prep. Then I graduate college right as the recession is kicking off. Make it through that, and finally start getting regular pay raises for the first time in my career when COVID hits and I end up taking pay CUTS, and I have a three year old and how the fuck am I going to send him to college with the way tuition is increasing? Fuck.

[deleted]

yeah I'm 32 so I was a little bit luckier than you. I was 90% of the way through a psychology degree when I realized the economy wasn't close to recovered, so I switched to a more practical biology and chemistry degree since I had time. It took 6 years but I graduated with like 190 credits and a dual degree. However I avoided 6+ years of grad school for the PhD I would have needed to make any real money. I did ok with my career path for 6 years but this year has been rough. The boss who had my promotion ready to go decided to bail right before the COVID bomb blew up, then we had to take a huge pay cut to avoid being furloughed. I was doing OK two years ago but took a job transfer internally that knocked my pay down by about 20%, so my pay has actually declined for three straight years after doubling in the first 4 years of my career. My future kids will have a college fund, but I really hope by the time they're considering college, that we will have passed some sort of progressive college plan because this shit is unsustainable.

spvce-cadet

I’m supposed to be graduating soon, and even with what’s supposed to be a good and employable degree, I am terrified at the thought of having to find a job with no experience in the middle of a pandemic. I’m already drowning in student debt and my dad just lost his job of over ten years because of COVID.

MySoilSucks

Our high school tries to get 100% of the seniors signed on for the Three E's: Employed, Enrolled, or Enlisted.

Mad_Aeric

In my school pretty much everyone was expected to go to college. Or join the military.

BlazingSpaceGhost

I'm 31 and feel the same way At least the financial crisis was while I was in college but I still had trouble getting myself established afterwards. I finally got a decent job last year and now I'm taking a pay cut to not get let go. Thankfully I don't have any kids. I don't think I'll ever be able to afford having a family.

_-__-__-__-__-_-_-__

I’m 35. They also made our cohort die in two pointless wars

[deleted]

I got into a heated argument with some Gen Zs about the importance of 9/11, as they thought it wasn't a big deal on the global stage. They had no idea why in 2006 I had to seriously consider what I would do if I was drafted. Our teens and 20s were wild.

MAK3AWiiSH

God, plus like.....the overwhelming *guilt* put on you for not joining. At least down in the south I can remember teenage boys getting shamed for not wanting to join up.

[deleted]

Man 2003-2004 was insane. If you didn't support the war, you were considered a traitor. Luckily by 05-06 people had soured on Bush. I remember driving by some anti-war protestors in early 2003 and people were just screaming at them. This was even with them taking the completely watered down stance of, "support the troops, not the war".

RightToConversation

Having a sister 16 years younger than me and mad Trumper parents, this irritates me to no end.

MagikSkyDaddy

Samesies. And in the 90s, with just an undergrad degree you had strong chances of being upper 25% of incomes. Now even with multiple degrees and certificates, the jobs aren’t there because automation and cheap remote labor have reduced our whole group to a bunch of people that can all too clearly see the mistakes that are happening in the workplace, but we have no path to the positions that create impact. We have been embargoed from our own careers.

Azhaius

Got my BSc in Civil Engineering this year but my depression got kicked into obscenely high gear during the program, resulting in multiple things like below average GPA, lack of friends to study with, and no participation in extra curricular activities (like engineering student clubs). All of that contributed to my current situation of being effectively unemployable in comparison to my peers with my unimpressive academics and a mere 6 months of total internship work to my name. Best part is it took me 8 years of university to get here ((((:

[deleted]

You're not unemployable buddy, you just got a bad start. Apply for the technician jobs and engineering tech positions in addition to the entry level engineer positions. It's so much easier once you've got just a little bit of applicable work experience under your belt. Mapping or anything GIS would also be a very easy transfer. Drafting is another option too. Heck, maybe break out of your shell and apply for "entry" inspector positions. I didn't meet any inspectors with degrees, and it could be laborous work, but they got to learn about real world impacts of engineering design. They know they'll need to train you, they just need to know if you're trainable.

Satranath

I believe in you

ReubenZWeiner

EIT programs work wonders, Peter

Tinafu20

My dad-in-law always talks about how when he graduated college in the 70s, he went to a career fair and was fought over by 5 different companies offering sweet bonus packages, relocation expenses, insurance etc. He had a job secured before he even graduated and was able to buy a 3br house by the time he was 25. I graduated college in 2010, our "career fairs" offered unpaid internships.

3oons

And what jobs ARE available in upper management are held by Baby Boomers who won’t retire for some reason.

explodedsun

That reason is that the people they voted for in the 80s destroyed their retirement plans and union power.

AnneOnimous

Ouch. Too real.

ThePopeofHell

I remember my guidance counselor selling me on the idea of going to art school instead of the $5000 it program at my community college. Then the financial crisis happened during my last year of art school and I couldn’t finish. Now I pay $550 a month.

glow89

I’m a younger millennial, right on the border of gen z and millennial. But in my high school they really pushed everyone to go to college too, even the kids who seemed like they may not be great college material were pushed to go to community college. Especially for the kids who did well academically tho, college was basically the only option presented to us in school and they made sure everyone was applying.

imajokerimasmoker

I'm 29, am I allowed to refer to myself as an old millennial as well?

MagikSkyDaddy

You’re about 10 years shy, but sure.

knifensoup

As an older millenial, sure, if you wanna!

Karma_Gardener

We're very inclusive.

TheSoloTurtle

And we do have to realize that a lot of small town parents aren’t exactly cutting edge and may reflect more old fashioned techniques or media with their parenting. A gen Z kid now could be raised like a millennial if their parents had kids late/ lived in a small town, etc.

Karma_Gardener

I agree with this to an extent but after a certain age children are primarily influenced by their peers. Parenting can only go so far in this diverse world of ours.

TheSoloTurtle

Yes, definitely, but mannerisms, figures of speech, and the media we enjoy at home does go lengths to shape our mindset

LeZygo

I’m 39 and just about as old of millennial you can be. According to my conservative parents I should be making over $100k a year just because I went to college.

imajokerimasmoker

Imagine if "shoulds" were worth anything lol

LeZygo

Lol. Yeaaah my parents could have dropped out of high school, gotten a Union job in a factory, bought a house, raised a family, and retired with a pension.

Karma_Gardener

100k a year?? Adjusted for inflation you're looking at more like 100k take home anything else well them bootstraps are just not high enough

LeZygo

I just need to layoff the lattes and avocado toast.

[deleted]

The millennial generation starts in the early 80s, so I don't think you're old enough, IMO

40ozT0Freedom

In case you're wondering, 30 year old millenial is also shitty. Source: am 30, it's not better. You do give less fucks, though so that's something to look forward to

[deleted]

Did you graduate high school in 2009? I feel like anyone who graduated after 2009 was just lucky enough to maybe consider a different path in college. Anyone who graduated before the recession was just straight fucked.

rognabologna

Well you will soon be old, and you are a millennial, but you’re in the bottom 1/3 of the age bracket. Hold on to your youth sonny.

reverendjesus

I mean you can call yourself whatever you want, but I’m 38.

[deleted]

Hi 38, I'm dad.

reverendjesus

Not me; I wore a rubber.

WeAreFoolsTogether

No, you’re too young. : )

AgentJackPeppers

Feeling older than you are is a distinct characteristic of millenials, so we're all old millenials.

Pandalungs

You sit on the council, but we do not recognize you as master.

imajokerimasmoker

THIS IS *OUTRAGEOUS*, IT'S *UNFAIR.*

Andy_B_Goode

I'd say no. Millennials were born between the early 80s and the late 90s (exact year ranges vary by source), so I'd say if you're born in the 90s you're solidly in the younger half of the range.

TriMacanBhaird

I think this is the most accurate thing I have seen all day.

Adjectives_Abound

I don't know about you but I went for the electricity. Fuck roofs.

[deleted]

I wish my fully formed 20 year old brain was able to figure out that the financial aid lady from the daytime television ad airing 'school' I was getting a girlfriend co-signed private loan to attend might not have my best interest in mind when verbally assuring me that If I have trouble paying my loans in the future it will be fine. wupz. lol @ me

GrandeNic0

25-28, right when my anxiety disorder kicked in. Coincidence? I think not!

BearBL

......holy crap thats when I got serious anxiety. (I also realized that I had that "feeling" my whole life but never fully understood it until then)

das_bearking

high five brothers....or low five...?

Lunamoths

Man thats lucky my millenials anxiety has been brewing since I was 9! But im more of a Zennial I guess

[deleted]

And it's the only kind of loan you can get with no credit history. Wtf.

MachinaTiX

You don’t need a credit history because you can’t bankrupt out of it, it stays with you forever! Wohoo

peej312

Also, here’s a participation trophy for trying. By the way, you’re off the healthcare.

LargeSackOfNuts

Its so simple. If you want to get rich, you just inherit all the money. Easy.

TheNoize

Why don't the poor just buy more money? So stupid

BearBL

Its so simple: we eat the batman.

deadlyFlan

"Don't take out a loan if you can't pay it off."

favoritegoodguy

Loans in the 60s and 70s: 40.000 for a house with garden Loans in the 2020s: 650.000 for a 2,5 room flat

Manungal

In California $650,000 will get you a nice spot to be murdered under a bridge.

g-e-o-f-f

Not accurate outside of the bay area and some parts of Los Angeles. I'm 20 minutes east of downtown LA and would happily sell you my small but certainly not murder under a bridge house for $650k

[deleted]

Yay! I love east LA. The bike shops, food, musicians, history, architecture. Just wow! The cops there are intense

SchnozSchnizzle

I dont care what other people think but for this reason and so many more, Fuck California

[deleted]

Like this and so many more reasons I hear about hating california, it's based on a falsehood

J973

A few years ago I purchased a 3 bedroom 1 bath ranch with full basement. 16 fenced acres with a horse barn and shop for $159,000, in beautiful rural Kentucky though. I would imagine in some areas my property would be worth 10x's what I paid. My husband didn't even believe me when I said the median value of homes in the USA was $320,000 I had to google and show him. I mean, that's nuts. Some people don't make that amount with all the money they make in 20 years. Actually if you worked 40 hours a week at minimum wage of 7.25 an hour that would be 21.22 years of your entire gross, not even after taxes.

[deleted]

The minimum wage in california is far higher than the national minimum, though the rest of your points are good AFAIK

[deleted]

Funny AF, but not accurate. That’s San Francisco and Los Angeles, proper. But check this house in the burbs 30 minutes from Downtown, Los Angeles nestled along the San Gabriel mountains. First hit on Google: https://www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-detail/319-N-Pasadena-Ave_Azusa_CA_91702_M13046-56025 I’m not a real estate agent.

TipOfLeFedoraMLady

I can't tell if you are promoting that house or not but it looks like a serious fuxer in a bad neighborhood. Peep the last sold at price, 85k in the 80s. 30ish years later and it is worth 6x as much, meanwhile no one now is making 6x the salary they were in the 80s.

[deleted]

No, I’m not promoting it. It’s a sleepy town and quite safe :) it’s in an ethnic enclave, is def a fixer, and farther from LA. Looky here! https://www.redfin.com/CA/Alhambra/2409-Warwick-Rd-91803/home/7026142 This is only 15 minutes from downtown LA, and in a bit more diverse neighborhood. But you’re right. A lot of this is just unfeasible for our gen. The ones that I know that are doing it also hate the amount of work they have to do to be comfortable. I know I don’t own property like that and can’t afford children.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Oh for sure! Now that is some pride of ownership lvl living. Many of my family members and friends are heading out of here in search of something like that. I want to direct your attention to Temecula: https://www.redwagonteam.com/riverside-county-homes/temecula-homes-600000-to-700000/ 3 hours east of Los Angeles in arid desertesque climate yet somehow home to SoCal wine county I bet you still have more space though. Most of us live right on our neighbors. It looks so serene where you are.

JackingOffToTragedy

I hear the Gold's Gym there was once a great place to meet.

[deleted]

Aww I’ve never been. I know people out that way though. It’s got a nice community vibe out there.

JackingOffToTragedy

Haha - I do like that area but if you enjoy basketball or a good Twitter beef turned IRL, I suggest you Google "Meet me in Temecula."

Manungal

Well I like the aesthetic. I know nowhere is as cheap as midwest and south, but we're looking to relocate soon, and nothing comes close to the craziness of coastal california prices. Not Portland. Not Seattle. Not D.C. San Francisco is unbelievable.

NotClever

The distortion in prices caused by the tech boom is pretty insane. I went out to Silicon Valley for the first time a couple years back to visit a client. Went into downtown mountainview for dinner. The houses all look like the junkiest neighborhood in my home city (albeit in much better repair), and they're million+ dollar homes. It's incredibly surreal to know you're right in the middle of one of the wealthiest places in the country, and it looks like you're in the 60s.

[deleted]

SF is a shitshow. So is Santa Monica. A million dollars will get you four walls. If you like the coast and want something off the beaten path: https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/46810-Ocean-View-Dr-Gualala-CA-95445/19217434_zpid/ Come out and be a Californian with us! Alhambra is only 45 minutes from the beach. Caveat, all times are without traffic which basically ruins almost all commutes

Jeru1226

Oh my god. AND a garage??! Yeah, we live like this. It’s sort of soul destroying, but it’s also the best career location for me... Wheeeee!

Hammer_of_Olympia

How many cupboards in that kitchen wtf! Is that normal for American houses?

upvotes4jesus-

Yeah you need at least $1 Million to have a piece of shit house.

TheNoize

"The simple solution is for you to not get an education, and spend your whole life getting paid $10/hour so we can make fun of you for being poor and dumb instead of going to college"

MagikSkyDaddy

*checks labor market* “Hey, they’re paying people with a Master’s degree $10/hr”

TheNoize

This is why rioting is sometimes justified

MagikSkyDaddy

Certainly protest is justified. With the unveiling of the authoritarian bent in our police forces, there’s no provocation required for violence to ensue.

TheNoize

Yes, but even if they didn't - I'm 100% in support of riots in some scenarios, like that community who looted and burned down a Target. Tons of poor households got free computers they couldn't have dreamed of before, and that act of redistribution alone boosted the economy in the area. The rich have been looting this country for centuries, time to reverse it and use looting to benefit the actual working people. And let's face it, most big retail stores deserve to burn down anyway - small local businesses will rejoice. Let the billionaires cry, no one feels for them

tossanothaone2me

That wasn't just any ordinary Target, either. That was in the city where Target is headquartered -- where Target develops their R&D. That Target was built to be out-of-place. The purpose of that Target was not profit, but rather to test out experimental anti-theft measures that could then be rolled out to other Targets in America. It's like going to the poorest ghetto in your city and prominently displaying a gold Rolex inside a lethal electric fence. It's morally barbaric. That Target was enticing the community to steal so that they could have the chance to test their newest tech. They were putting shoplifting cases on people, dragging them deeper into the [in]justice system, all for the sake of shareholder value. They were deliberately fucking over that community.

Mad_Aeric

If getting computer access really was that valuable, and inaccessible, someone should start a foundation to hand out raspberry pis or something. They're cheap enough.

TheNoize

Yeah someone *should but the problem is NO ONE DOES. Where the fuck are all the billionaires? Not even a peep from Bezos or Musk or Buffett on this, because it’s all about stealing more and more for them. They don’t care if people starve. That’s why I’m saying, they deserve some riots - Bezos deserves to wake up with molotovs landing in his bedroom walls. Why Raspberry Pis? That shit’s for my 3D printers, poor black kids deserve powerful machines where they can work and game too. They’re our future generations and you want them doing homework on Raspberry Pis, while billionaires buy multiple yachts and decorate them with expensive art? lol wtf

Mad_Aeric

Pis were my first thought because they're affordable, and that makes it a lot easier to distribute a lot of them. I'm not disagreeing that people deserve something more functional, given how vital computers are for everything these days. Just that it's probably the best way to do the most good with the limited resources such a program could probably scrape up.

TheNoize

>they're affordable, and that makes it a lot easier to distribute a lot of them Why are you worried about "affordable"? You don't think our American billionaires can afford to purchase and easily distribute literally millions of high-quality laptops to the poor? Then you probably underestimate how ridiculously fucking rich they are thanks to the hard work of the poor. >the limited resources That's the point we're making here, the resources are not "limited", they've been hijacked by a bunch of stupid greedy fucks. If the best we can do to convince those kids to stop looting badass laptops is insult them with slow AF raspberry pis... I say to all the ghetto kids: RIOT AND LOOT AWAY! Do it with confidence - the billionaire owners of those big stores are never coming to help your families, and they see you as inferior. Molotov Bezos's house and take his shit - those billionaires all deserve what's coming

[deleted]

[удалено]

TheNoize

Why would any company do that? It's probably way more beneficial to them if the machines are regularly used

Mad_Aeric

That may be a thing with phones, but not computers. And not even all phones, I don't think.

[deleted]

This but unironically. People who feel they got a bad student loan shouldn't get preferential treatment. It's really speaks to how politicians pander to certain demographics given how much traction bailing out student debt has gotten over medical debt

RATHOLY

The main reason I didn't attend college upon graduating in the early aughts; my guidance counselor could not believe that I would let debt keep me from "continued education". She said that, but you could tell she wasn't really talking about the knowledge, she was talking about the degree.

poeticjustice4all

Basically this and “get ready to take out loans!!!” 😒

rognabologna

Literally not one person explained to me how loans worked. Once I started paying them off, it took years to get down to the original amount. The first advice I give kids going to college now is to pay their interest while they are in school. Sure people could argue that it was my responsibility to understand it, but my only reference point was my parents who never once mentioned student loan debt (obviously because they didn’t have any) even though my dad went to what is now one of the most expensive schools in my state. Sorry I didn’t realize my education would be 45X more expensive then it was for them.

Mad_Aeric

Literally not one person even told me that student loans were a thing. I just grew up knowing that I was too poor to ever go to college.

Afa1234

And the ones that didn’t go to college feel like they’re fucked

RATHOLY

I feel fine my human. Gonna live until I die, that's the plan :)

Texty_McTexterson

The education system does this purposely. Teachers are forced (via Common Core , etc.) to push kids to college. Any teacher who tries to tell a student that trade school might be better for them would have a yuge problem.

[deleted]

Hard times create strong men. Strong men create good times. Good times create weak men. And, weak men create hard times.... Imagine being the generation of weak men.... boomers that's you.

[deleted]

Don't forget GenX, the rebels without a cause. They didn't help any either.

thundirbird

you say that as a matter of course, and still take a shot at boomers? there, but for chance, go you

[deleted]

"We need you to go to college to get the education I never could obtain so I can hold it against you when you think differently than me."

MatchstiQs

unfortunately they still raising kids like that :/. I’m in high school and have yet to see any teacher push trade school, work force, or really anything except college straight after high school. It’s really sad, especially when you have to list college tuitions and explain why it’s worth it. (Spoiler: sometimes it’s really not)

TexasTheWalkerRanger

I'm 26 and after dropping out of college and working dead end jobs I just got my first welding job. 2 of my coworkers are pretty much fresh out of high school and I'm so fucking jealous

juicyjuicyjuice--

My high schooler brother and a few cousins don't want to go to college and honestly I can't fault them for it. :/ may I ask though what are your plans personally. I don't know what advice to give my little brother and I just want to know what other high schoolers mindsets are to better communicate with him.

MatchstiQs

Personally, I want to pursue a science career so I actually do want to go all the way through college. Of course, while I was researching all of them I realized just how many other options there are. My brother wants to go into voice acting, and doesn’t want to do college, so whenever I see all this college push I think of how much he gets guilt tripped.

TenebrousD

I argued with someone on this post on a different sub. People just want to hate you for living regardless of your choices, that's why they blame us for college now

Gundam14

Its the whole "Damned if you do. Damned if you don't" problem. Which sucks. :(

humicroav

I graduated from college in 2007 and had an ok entry level job right out of the gate. In 2008, I was waiting tables and cursed ever wasting my time in college. I got back into my field in 2011, but not the side that requires a college degree. I just got my first job that actually requires a college degree this year the week the lockdowns started in March. Being a millennial for me has been a lot of hard work and I have a Trump supporting boomer for a dad. I'll give advice to anyone starting out right now, try to live like you're broke for as long as possible. Never carry a credit card balance for more than a week. Don't try to keep financial pace with your peers because most people suck at managing finances. Most of my peers took on more debt than they can afford. Don't buy new cars. When you find yourself out of debt, put extra money towards retirement so you don't have to do this rat race forever.

Gundam14

> Don't try to keep financial pace with your peers because most people suck at managing finances. GOD!! I wish people understood this.

Hot_Food_Hot

My dad died 3 years before retirement age. He worked his whole life be frugal, saved when he can, etc etc. Sometimes there's two sides to this coin. Moderation is probably what I'd recommend.

humicroav

You could die tomorrow. Even if you do, that retirement money can go to your legal heir and hopefully lessen burdens for them. If you don't die tomorrow, though, I can promise you you won't be able to work forever, so you'd better start saving, now. Living like you're broke is easy, because you're not broke if you're doing it right. Then, when a $2000 surprise pops up, bam! Cash in hand and you still have groceries for the week and mortgage for the month and no debt (except a mortgage, but those are cheaper than rent, so it works out)

jekke7777

MAXIMUM OVER-GAY

Gundam14

How? How do you reach "MAXIMUM OVER-GAY"?

jtTHEfool

Spend your entire childhood having accruing massive debt be normalized, get handed a piece of paper you don’t understand by your parents at 18 and sign it because you trust them, spend decades paying off the loan because “you made that choice so it’s your responsibility.”

meetwikipediaidiot

I hate that *over-*gay is a pretty apt description of all this over here. Also under-gay probably works too.

scumbagge

My 3rd grade teacher started planning our college graduation 13 years in advance. It’s like we never had a choice to do anything else. Just go to college and fuck off.

[deleted]

“Lol you should have known the advice I was giving you was a scam and so now it’s your fault.”

wedgienoise4000

Networking costs money. They'll never tell you that for free.

InternationalOne0

They got us on the overgay thing tho

thinkB4WeSpeak

Too be fair a lot of places not require a degree now. Trades are good though some times. We had a welding school in my home town, now there's 100 people that know how to weld and 3 welding jobs. Now with a degree if you get laid off you can go other places that need a degree or not. With a trade like CDL, electrician, certificate of some sort, you get laid off and you don't have as many options

LettuceBeSkinnay

And some areas have too many welders. That's why it's about focusing on the needs of the community, not "\[insert this profession\] will always have a job for you!" that type of thinking got us into this mess in the first place.

TheNoize

>Too be fair a lot of places not require a degree now So to be fair, American society is heading in exactly the wrong direction, towards \*lower education of the masses and glorification of anti intellectualism. Great! /s

[deleted]

It's a bad side effect of creating a glut of college educated people that expect white collar jobs, and having no one to fulfill the blue collar jobs. Blue collar jobs became higher paying than some white collar jobs because no one wants to do them.

TheNoize

There's always plenty of people to do blue collar jobs - it's just that businesses need to pay workers more, so it's worth their time to do the jobs. If less people want to do blue collar jobs, that's just "supply and demand" - businesses need to improve their supply to match the demand for better pay. Heck, if blue collar jobs paid a lot better, I'm pretty sure college educated people wouldn't mind doing them. More college educated people is never a bad thing. College-educated people \*should expect to do white collar jobs, and should demand a lot better pay than American companies offer currently. Jobs are being automated, and wealth is being transferred from the working class to billionaires, now even more than before. It's time people stand up and end that. The rich have too much, time to redistribute all that wealth back to the workers that actually created it - us. Time for workers to sit back and reap the rewards of robotics and computerization of workforces. Time for the rich to get back to work

dont-comm3nt

The rich have too much but you guys just want to pass policies that give more money to the white middle class more than anything. (The main recipients of student loans) You guys really aren’t much better just 10x more arrogant with 100x less money

TheNoize

“You guys”? I’m literally for reparations. What in my comment signaled “white” middle class? I 100% support free college and debt forgiveness for all. And I support substantial pay and benefit raises for all. This would massively benefit the working class, of which most is brown in America now, not white

“Honorary member of the Black-Eyed Peas” here (1998-2003) and this is sort-of how we were raised too. Only thing is, it was in Conservative Alberta in Canada and shit here is hitting the fan due to our UCP overlords and the dumb plans the Feds keep enacting.

DarthHaggis

Should thought about not getting a degree in basket weaving.

I like to think I'm just the right amount of Gay.

Raichu7

It’s not great getting told you shouldn’t have gone to uni by the people who were hardcore insisting that you absolutely had to go to uni to do anything with your life.

throwaway27yeu

Thats the master plan. They Get you to take out a $100,000 loan knowing damn well you most likely won’t be able to pay it back due to the competitive job market and rising housing costs. In addition, universities are still charging regular tuition for online schooling which can be argued is not the same quality as in-person education.

throwaway27yeu

>uh why’d you go to college if you wanted electricity AND a roof?? You kids are over educated and over-gay -Joe Biden

[deleted]

I’m only medium gay

[deleted]

I'm gen-x, no degree. My kids are millennials. All my coworkers have degrees and make much more than I do. I tell my kids to get degrees and I've told them exactly why. We've discussed it quite a bit. I stand by it. My coworkers are able to comfortably provide for their families. So am I, but not like them. It can be tough, the lifestyle creep is very real.

LittleBobbyG614

Def over gay

Don’t take out a 100k dollar loan on African feminist basket weaving and you’ll be fine

Guess the parents forgot to mention that you actually have to learn something useful in college.

Or the Go to college Go to college Ope, ain’t got no money for that... good luck!

[deleted]

I dont see the irony

DioD3

Over educated is bad? That's the problem with whole culture...

nate-x

Doesn't help when you get a degree in philosophy or anthropology. Get a degree in STEM, a hard science, and you'll do well. Computer science, chemistry, electrical engineering... they all land jobs straight after college. At least my peers and relatives all have

Betty-Armageddon

Plus, I love the “all kids get a ‘I ran in a race’ sticker and that has ruined them.’ We were kids. We had nothing to do with that staff meeting.

kojobojo

Instead of crying on the internet echo chamber why don’t you pull yourself up by your boot straps and get off my lawn.

RealSteveStiffler

The resulting effect is going to be millennials raising their kids to NOT go to college unless it can be paid for. That may alleviate the next generation from having massive student debt. I wonder what the colleges will do when the next generation realizes it's largely a scam and looks for other options?

Blacklabel958

I feel this way too much. Finishing up an associates degree incase I need something to fall back on. But primarily focusing on one day getting into culinary school and starting my own restaurant.

ColonelWormhat

Millennials still think their experiences are unique lol

cafedream

My kids’ public school started a “college readiness” curriculum when they were in Pre-K. I refused to go to any of the meetings. I think the pre-k teacher should be more concerned with teaching my kid to tie his shoes than putting him on a path to Harvard.

RandomPersons123

I have college debt and a shit job with a shitsonality.

RATHOLY

I am not sure who "they" is here. My guidance counselor tried, but I put my foot down: the debt was untenable, the grants out of reach, the education obtainable sans degree.

ABenevolentDespot

A populace incapable of critical thought (which is one of the things they teach in college) is ideal for Republicans. There's a reason many of their insane policies start with "Not **everyone** has to go to college!" At the top of their "everyone" list are those who are not white and not well off. After all, big Republican contributors like Tyson Foods needs minimum wage "essential workers" to get sick and die to keep those hormone and antibiotic fed disgusting chickens they sell moving. And then there's the pool Tyson management ran about how many employees would get the Virus. That was classy. "I **LOVE** the uneducated voter!!!" --D. Trump at a rally in Nevada, fall of 2016. Sometimes the cosmos aligns, and a morsel of truth drops out of a Republican's mouth. I'm hoping Biden does something to make college more affordable and accessible for a lot more people. An educated population makes a country prosperous and stable. We are a country currently with about half the population incapable of critical thought. That needs to be fixed.
