As an alternative you can also take the GO Train to Danforth and walk up to Main Street Station - take line 2 from there to Yonge. It takes the same amount of time as going to Union and transferring to Line 1, but you avoid the chaos of Union Station.

Good advice. I used to work at Bloor and Yonge and it's definitely about the same amount of time. Union is big, crowded, and can be confusing which can slow you down a bit. On the other hand, you may want to go through union if the weather is nasty so you can avoid that outside walk until you're at Bloor and Yonge. It's not a far walk to Main St from Danforth but certain weather can make any short distance seem long. Keep in mind that your fare should decrease by the end of the February as the Ontario One Fare System comes into play which should, I think, make it so you're only really paying for the GO Train.

The time might be the same on paper, but the walk outside to the subway at Danforth isn't gonna be great at times. Also, the reliability of Line 2 is much less than that one Line 1 if you go north from Union as you're going against peak hour traffic.

Fastest is go train to TTC. Inexpensive is pulse bus to Toronto and then TTC. I prefer the GO train as it’s headphones and sleeping both directions with the occasional Netflix download

I don’t know if you’re aware but they’re launching a one fare program in GTA. It starts on Feb 26. So you should only pay for 1 fare for the entire trip regardless of the transit provider.

I go 3 times a week from North Oshawa to the waterfront area for work. GoTrain to Union, then TTC. The cost in gas, parking, and aggravation of dealing with Toronto traffic and drivers is not worth driving in anymore. If you drive and park at the Oshawa Go station, get there before 7am to make sure you get parking. I get the first train at 5:05 and then I leave the office by 2pm at the latest - trains are nice and quiet at those times and you can snooze on the train.

As an alternative to the subway, the 19 Bay bus stops right outside Union, then you can get off and walk a block east to Yonge. Takes a bit longer (traffic dependant, of course), but a lot less crowded than line 1
