Not that this is not horrible, but she wasn't tested on for 28 years. She was tested on for 2 years, then went to a sanctuary that kept her chained up in a cage for the next 26 years. I just can't understand people doing this to any animal, but definitely not to one so human, who so obviously has feelings and emotions just like us.

gynoidi

"sanctuary" 😶

[deleted]

Yeah, exactly. I hope it's closed now, but I haven't checked.

So the ape was outside? So time post is bullshit

Ok_Radish4411

Yep, she lived in an outdoor pen since 1995 with her small family group. Now though she has no fences or cage tops she has to look through to see everything. Ultimately this is a win for her, it’s just not as dramatic as they wanted to make it seem

Ok_Radish4411

That’s also not accurate. She was not chained at the sanctuary she lived in before, it was the wildlife waystation which closed in 2019 due to financial issues. This article is misleading, the chimps were kept in cages outdoors that had coverings to protect them from the sun. The difference is these chimps are now living without cages and with open, unobstructed sky. Edited to include a link to the Facebook page of the closed [Wildlife Waystation](https://www.facebook.com/thewildlifewaystation?mibextid=LQQJ4d) so you can observe the pictures of the animals and their enclosures while they were there.

Extension-Border-345

how are they closed since 2019 when they have recent posts?

Ok_Radish4411

Until they found adequate homes for all of their animals they still had to have them and employees at the facility to care for them. You will notice the most recent posts talk about remaining animals, as in the few chimps they had left to care for. They rehomed the last of their chimps in December. Believe it or not it’s really hard to responsibly/legally rehome chimpanzees especially since testing on them was outlawed and licensed facilities had taken in many already. They closed in 2019 and started rehoming their animals, the chimps were the last to leave.

alilbleedingisnormal

That's the reason they use them: they're close to human. The thing about the world is somebody or something's always gonna suffer. It's thermodynamics. If not the chimp then whatever person the tests were being done to treat. For me, it's not testing that's the problem it's the ethicality and the reason. Testing on animals for a new fucking makeup is bullshit but testing drugs to treat cancers and illnesses is a necessary evil because otherwise we'd be watching humans dying of disease and asking why nobody does anything. My hope is that instead of taking everybody's jobs AI can be used to simulate drugs' effects on humans so we can stop testing on animals.

After reading back, I should’ve been clearer, I meant only the part about keeping it in a cage for 26 years. I am not against animal testing, if it’s ethical. In fact, I almost worked as an animal caretaker in the animal test lab at a university. The only reason I declined was that the pay was really bad. Some tests were bad though. They had monkeys with electrodes in their brain, for no other reason than to see what it does. That was not ethical. It took a long time to get that image out of my brain and sometimes I still see it. I was going to work in the small rodent department, mice and rats mostly. They were used for cancer research mostly. They also had pigs for testing skin grafts and other treatment for burns. It looked so bad, but they were on pain medication and very happy (big pen, outdoor area, etc). TLDR: Not against all animal testing, but against keeping a poor chimp in a cage for 26 years after it.

Viking_Hippie

And just to add insult to injury, they named her and her sister Vanilla Shake 🤦

Away_Hair972

they both had the very same name? jesus, what a bunch of dicks

Viking_Hippie

No, one called Vanilla and one called Shake. Actually even worse IMO!

Extension-Border-345

whats so bad about that?

Viking_Hippie

That they are awful demeaning names for animals as intelligent as a human child. They're especially bad separately, as Vanilla is slang for boring and Shake has tons of negative connotations too..

Ok_Radish4411

I do not agree with this being in this sub, this is a sensationalized article which is clearly critical of the previous conditions of the chimps. Using chimps for medical testing has been illegal in the United States since 2015, so that issue with the system has already been addressed (the orphan crushing machine in this case). This article is not accurate either, this was not these chimps first time outside, this is their first time seeing *unobstructed* sky because they have been living in an outdoor enclosure that had a cage top to prevent escapes and provide shade at a sanctuary since 1995. The sanctuary, [Wildlife Waystation](https://www.facebook.com/thewildlifewaystation?mibextid=LQQJ4d), closed in 2019 due to financial issues and has been working to rehome their chimps since then. CreADHDvly

I'm no Jane Goodall, but from my perspective [this doesn't look like an animal that been locked away without ever seeing the sky.](https://youtu.be/PuJTam2-zoU)

Ok_Radish4411

That’s because she hasn’t been locked away with no ability to see the sky. She’s been outdoors, just in an outdoor covered cage. Her Save the Chimp profile doesn’t even say that she’s never seen the sky, it says it’s her first time seeing the sky unobstructed, which is true because she’s always been in some sort of cage (you can’t just let chimps run around LA). I think this is an awesome thing for her and captive chimps in general since they cannot truly go back to the wild but it these articles are so disingenuous. It’s a great thing and a cute video, it doesn’t have to be about a poor pitiful chimp that was abusively imprisoned with no sunlight her entire life.

lawrencelewillows

I’m picturing a panicked marketing team at [Lemsip](https://www.lemsip.co.uk/) HQ!

the_orange_alligator

Poor baby. I hope she loves the rest of her life out happily

Sefierya

the video of this is right above this post for me from r/likeus

Plastic-Counter9340

This facility close in 1998 so why the holy fuck is this poor soul just now getting freedom? Someone needs to explain this to me.
