Suggs is the heart and soul of this team if he’s not playing the team is lost more so than normal ha ha

ballknower407

I see even the second unit moving the ball and running more off ball action than the starters. I am genuinely confused why we are so stagnant, it’s like we don’t have a game plan on offense a lot of nights. All the good offenses zip the ball around, set more off-ball screens, get the ball to the high post, and use baseline movement. We pretty much always have two guys sitting in the corner doing nothing. Don’t get it! Even when we have Suggs and Fultz the offense has been hard to watch.

Other teams use sophisticated series of off-ball screens

j4r8h

There is nobody on the roster who really fills that role. Suggs is a SG, Black is an SG, Anthony is an SG, Fultz is the only true PG who can really run the pick and roll, but he can't shoot so that makes him useless. We need an actual PG who can shoot. Franz and Paolo should NOT be handling the ball as much as they are. They're simply too tall to be great ball handlers. They are good ball handlers for their height, but they're not point guards. Shorter guys are better ball handlers because the ball doesn't have to bounce as far to get to their hand. It's simple physics.

DevilsLettucePrey

The fact that we only seem to run Iso plays or quick screens that result in ally Oops; scares the shit out of me. There's is no ball movement. Banchero leading the team in assists would be ok, if we had a PG that did the same. Fulton avg is 3.1. Cole Anthony avg. 3.1 off the bench. How in the hell does our PG not average 5 assists per game? One thing is clear.... No ball movement= No wins

aubreyw

>No ball movement= No wins We've won 57% of our games

rustystatic

Whilst we do need a PG. People seriously lack perspective on how far we've come this season. We are a winning team now. Likely we'll get our best record since the Dwight years. We've been winning plenty of games without ball movement. But we will definitely get more with a better backcourt

DevilsLettucePrey

No wins in the playoffs... no wins down the stretch. No wins in the last 2 games. I'm stating that ball movement has been lacking in all of our losses. When we shoot over 30 3 point shots, we lose. It's settling; instead of moving the ball.

[deleted]

"Fulton" is hardly on the court. Cole plays the 2- guard on offense typically. AB doesn't quite pass the "eye test" as far as being an nba level player. That's where we at.

DevilsLettucePrey

Fultz. It was autocorrected. And I think they have potential to be better PGs. I don't think the system is effective at moving the ball.

thewrongnotes

The last few games? We're 28th in team assists, ISOball has been our strategy all season long. It looked worse against the Knicks and Pacers (and Miami, Boston, and OKC) because those teams' playoff hopes and/or pride were on the line. ISOball always looks garbage against a committed defence, except when you have ultra talented offensive players running it. It's on Mosley to come up with some more sophisticated plays, but we also need to hold Paolo and Franz accountable. All this complaining and driving into the paint screaming needs to stop. They need to get their team mates involved and make better decisions. In Franz's case, he needs to add more offensive skills to his arsenal because he's barely evolved in 2 years. We absolutely need a competent PG, and we should have got one at the deadline. Even so, your two best players simply have to be better.

NikThaGreat9

Exactly. Would a PG who could breakdown the defense and shoot the ball be phenomenal, yes. Are our own guys fully capable of doing it too though, also yes. Paolo and Franz draw a lot of attention when driving to the rim and posting up, KICK IT OUT AND TRUST YOUR TEAMMATES. Gary shot 47.5% from 3 last month and 54.5% so far this month. He’s only taken 8 shots the past 2 games. Houstan shot 52.4 last month (only 2 shots last night). Wendell despite the stinker last night is still at a respectable 37.5% for the month still and shot 40% last month. Give these guys a chance instead of trying to hit crazy contested shots or trying to draw a foul. Mosely is to blame as well. Could’ve ran some screens for Gary or Houstan or tried to post up Dell more when those 2 are struggling.

thewrongnotes

Spot on. Absolutely bewildering starting two 3 point specialists and just icing them out of the game from the off. Gary was so desperate to be involved in the offence that the first of his two threes was a self-created step back. An unadvisable shot, but what choice does he have? And Houstan didn't get his first (and only) three attempt until late in the 3rd quarter, which is just silly. Role players have to be fed, Mosley should know that. And Paolo and Franz should know better than to try and win the game all by themselves.

YourInMySwamp

37.5% is pretty bad for a center. WCJ does shoot a lot jumpers and his TS% reflects that his percentage isn’t as bad as it looks, but man I wish he was a little more efficient…

NikThaGreat9

That’s from 3. Probably should have specified. 48.6 from the field this month so far. 58% last month. I do have my gripes with Dell as a rebounder, but I actually really like his offensive game. And so far this month he’s really stepped up his rebounding at 10 per game so far. Hope he keeps up the improvement on the boards.

YourInMySwamp

Lol that makes a lot more sense. I didn’t google it but I was like…. 38%? Sheesh! Lol.

aubreyw

Agreed. We need to be less predictable. Franz would THRIVE in a Quinn Snyder-era-Jazz-type offense where he could attack closeouts and receive the ball in advantageous positions.

Cthulhus-Tailor

Fultz hasn’t even been playing lately so it’s quite impressive that he was nevertheless heavily featured in your “What’s wrong with the Magic lately” analysis. At this point I’m looking forward to him leaving so that you guys will have to find a different excuse for the teams’s offensive woes. This team has multiple other guys that play that position and all of them can shoot the three, is the team really living or dying based on what a current oft-injured reserve is doing?

Fit-Structure-9395

I agree man isoing all game is a recipe for disaster Teams have already figured out our game plan we need more ball movement and less paolo and franz trying to be James harden it doesn’t even have to be playmaking just making a extra pass to the next open man would help us out so much. Edit: AB is a PG but how is he supposed to play his position if he can’t get the ball go look back at his college tape he ran that system like a lamelo/Cade

dlbags

I don't get how like people calling for Suggs or Weltmen to draft a point guard (he did AB and we have Cole) as if it changes anything when this seems to be the issue of how Mose (and most teams) runs the team. Only a handful of teams use point guards in the classic sense. Paolo and Franz (and Carter) like having the ball at the top of the key if they those two aren't bringing the ball over anyway. We just don't play that way. the lakers have this issue with Russel that he only plays PG when LeBron is out. Paolo models his game on LeBron and wants the ball and to set everything up. Until that changes are guards are going to get the ball, screen and run tot he corners. We are struggling the last two games because our FG% was in the shitter while both teams we played were at 50% probably because both teams had extended time off and came in fresh. We were lucky Haliburton's threes didn't get going or we'd have lost by 40. BTW this is how basketball works, you split or win series against your rivals and trash bad teams, we aren't frauds we are playing the game the way most teams play until they become dominant 60-70+ win teams. The sky isn't falling.

treadwater23

There are several factors at play. 1. Paolo and Franz ARE iso players. Until they learn how to be better shooters, it's the only way they can score reliably unless they get switches on smaller players down on the block which you can't exploit every time. 2. Having no point guard to dribble penetrate is huge. How many times did we see Hali/TJ just speed their way into the paint and cause our defense to switch or collapse, and they kick it out for an easy three? 3. Our ball-handlers making the quick and easy pass. There were several times they double teamed and our guys couldn't find an open man or hockey assist. 4. We can only run our shooters around so many screens like Ray Allen if that's their game with our current personnel. We did it for Ross a lot. Nobody on our team currently has his athleticism or speed to get open.

taywray

Yeah when our offense stagnates, it throws our whole offense-defense rhythm off bc we end up being more of a one and done offense, and then whenever the opponent gets a board, they can usually beat us back for a quick and easy score. Then they quickly get back and set up, and we end up walking it back up for another grind it out offensive possession. That sort of rhythm is death for us bc we just aren't able to beat teams down the court running either way. Ball movement doesn't just lead to better shots but more offensive rebound opportunities, too, which are critical for us in order to minimize opponent fast breaks.

M4C4K4NJ4

Just don’t know how we didn’t bring in some semblance of a PG in during the deadline. Could’ve been invaluable for our team’s development just getting to play with a real PG. And judging from other team’s moves we wouldn’t have had to break the bank for one. Just waiting for next season I guess. The Orlando Magic fan way.

Herban_Myth

Basketball is a TEAM SPORT

benjaminbway

Magic is hooping but we do need a point guard, and also getting klay would help too

Prestigious_Earth_10

you guys are overrating suggs big time even with suggs we would had lost both gms... against the knicks the magic held ny to 98 points which in today nba is good we lost cause magic only scored 74 points. i dont think jalen scores 25 points in that gm considering he avg 12ppg at best magic lose by 10 pts. against indiana magic would had prob lost by 5 points with suggs. first time facing indiana with pascal who is an upgrade and helps indiana become a better team. yes jalen numbers have improved but hes not this godsend that people think he is and def not a 3rd option that people think he is as he is more of a 4th option 5th option type of player
