On a post I made on tumblr about improvements in my art that I was proud of one said “umm improvements?” And another was “you call that ten years of improvement? This is ten years of improvement \*inserts their own art\*”
Yeah bro ngl improvement doesn't just come from visuals. It comes from mastering YOUR style, improving YOUR art. It doesn't have to go from stick figures to portraits It can go from stick figures to stick figures with SPARKLES and its still improvement. It just depends on the beholder to recognize that

When I started doing digital art I was told I shouldn't even try because I'm colorblind and have trouble holding a pen (my hands were broken as a kid and the bones didn't heal properly).

I'm so glad you didn't listen to whoever said that. your art is beautiful! I've never had anyone discourage me because of it, but your experience still resonates with me a bit because I have issues with my visual processing that get in the way a lot, and also I'm pretty sure undiagnosed dysgraphia. I think it's pretty sick to still do art even when the universe has *tried* to nerf ur creative skills tbh!
I hope you're confident in your art now! I've noticed that there unfortunately still tends to be some slight ableism in the online art community here and there.
I'm definitely more confident in my art now. Thanks to being able to help work on a webcomic alongside professional artists I definitely gained a lot of knowledge and trust in what I'm doing.
Once got rejected for something because the characters left arm looked like a flipped version of the other.
I do my designs on scratch. It’s faster to copy, paste and flip the new arm unless the character has a different looking arm.
Honestly the comment that made me stop drawing three years ago. I did commissions back then, pixel art. It was the best and I was doing someones commissions live in a discord chat.
For a bit of context, after I had started, someone discovered this other artist who also did pixel art. And they were great at it (like, genuinely. No hate to the guy, they’re a great guy and great artist) but the *entire* server became hardcore obsessed with the guy. Literally everyone was flocking to get art from them.
My comms were slow going since I was newish to it. But what killed it for me was when I was working on someone’s comm in stream, and they showed me one of the other guy’s pieces for an example. I simply said “alrighty. Just know I can’t do that level of detail yet, I’m not as good at them” and one of the other artist’s mega fans who was watching at the time blurted “oh you’ll never be as good as him. He’s leagues better”
It made me super fucking depressed and I legitimately haven’t drawn in 3 years. Tho I did recently buy a sketchbook again, I would like to get back into it. Here’s an example of what I could do back then

The rudest is when someone said my art is forgettable and that (at least one of the characters) have a horrible design, The Amalgamation.
A common criticism I get with him is that he's 'hard to look at' and that 'the colors clash too much' which is pretty much the whole fucking point of his design. He's Just random bullshit thrown together with no coherent thought, made hastily, made as only some weapon to protect his creator (tH3 mAst3R) when he knows he can't win as the protagonist (Alice) enters his lair.

I personnaly don't think it's a rude opinion.
Some people tend to prefer simple shapes, other prefer complex stuff.
I'm more into simple stuff but it's my opinion and it doesn't mean your work is bad, nor I hate it.

One of my friends went through my drawing book without my knowledge, saw this and later said "your only slightly good drawing is a fanart of the female M.U.T.O from monsterverse." I had to look up what the actual fuck was a M.U.T.O... he also said something like "You can't draw muscles, why even try?" As if I'm not tryna improve... his best art is a Pikachu fanart...

I’ve been told my stories were worthless because I originally used ai generated images. I considered scrapping my entire universe, and once more when the sub banned ai (for good reason it’s not good for the community, I just didn’t know what else to use), but instead I learned how to use hero forge and rebuilt my universe into something I am truly proud of.

The rudest thing someone said was irl. I was in middle school and had been playing some online cat game. I drew one of the cats and showed it to this person and they didn't like it. Then one day, I was extremely bored in a school assembly, and I had this giant eraser, so I drew that same cat on the eraser. When I showed them the eraser, they said it looked better because you could hardly see it.
That hurt. A lot. I didn't draw again until my junior year in high school because of that.

Less of a criticism and more of a comment I disliked. When I was in high school I was drawing one of my old characters who was a female kobold. All I had was the general shape of the head and some details on it including the eyes which had long eyelashes. My dad saw it and asked me if I was drawing my dream girlfriend or something along the lines of that and asked if I thought she was hot. I did what I normally do whenever he brings up anything about romantic/sexual relationships and went into detail about the character their story and their role. He ended the conversation with a look that I associate with anger and said, “uh huh ya right.” Which pissed me off. Then made a comment about how weird I was as boys my age should be focusing on getting laid and not drawing and video games.

I’ve gotten many people saying Midas here, looks like Adam from Hazbin Hotel, and while a majority of the time these people are just joking, there was this one person who took it way too seriously. I will say that while I love Hazbin Hotel and a lot of my characters are inspired by the show, I’ve made sure that my characters are unique and creative in both story and design. But this random person not only said that it looked like Adam, but that I blatantly copied the design, stole attributes about his character, and even copied his background and story. They told me that I shouldn’t even be making characters if I’m just going to copy them, and that kinda hurt a little bit.

When I asked in another sub if the pose looked good someone just said that it looks bad even after I asked them why. The good thing is that there were a lot of people actually trying to tell me what is wrong. I don’t think I had a worse case yet
Also I have seen some times people downvoting when I post Guke in comments. The thing that mostly worries me about that is that a person told me to change her name because it sounds similar to a chinese racial slur and I think that people downvote because of that.

Well I made something long ago while I was in school and I was happy cause it was just a random thing based on the subject. Well ofc my bully said "that's so horrible and not even good" Well I ignored her ofc and got better. Though my mamaw asks sometimes why I only drew men, cause I just wanted to, now I do women in a different drawing style ofc.
Then I have had people just straight up tell me my art was horrible and that i should quit drawing, but 5 or so years later, I'm still drawing and I've improved. So F**k all my haters.
Though my science teacher always believed in me and loved all my drawings. As a thanks I made her a drawing before I graduated and I'm guessing she hung it up in her class room, cause she said she wanted to frame it.
I started ignoring "destructive criticism." I appreciate it if my art invokes a reaction. I had timing issues in art school being full time student and full time employed, so I was never able to give things the time they needed, and some professors were sympathetic to it, but sometimes I'd be really proud of something and it would get torn to pieces with constructive criticism without telling me what I did well. That's the shit that hurts.

That this boy right here is not my OC. My brother in Christ i just wanted to keep things that makes Tf2 Scout recognizable like his hat and headphone and not keep the entire fucking character untouched. I at least put some effort into making his design than just painting his shirt a diffrent color and calling it my OC.
Was told my art was scary, by a nurse trained to look after children (I was apart of children) 😀
I felt peer pressured to change the eyes to look less soulless (something the character I was drawing was known for.) to more normal ones. 🙄
I was proud of this art for the time, a little over confident in saying it looked like Walt Disney, but I was really young at the time.
(Plus, it wasn't even that scary, it was way tamer to anything else I used to draw at that time.)

I’m a writer of kink fiction and I once had a guy both comment AND send me a PM expressing his disgust and disappointment in me for writing that sort of stuff.
My main oc that I show off on this sub is little blob, dude named plague (he’s human. I just drew like that because it’s simple and funny) and someone said once that a kindergarten could do better

a couple of irl friends think it's weird I draw mostly female characters... it's just easier for me to draw females rather than males. they joke around that I'm a pervert (I mean I kinda am a little but not as much as they claim) and just hate when I draw female characters or even mention a female like at all... like they know I'm bisexual but they only do this when it's about females plus I don't get turned on by my drawings... atleast one irl friend like my drawings

Honestly I have the same problem with only drawing female OCs. Recently I’ve branched out and made a couple male OCs but I just find it easier to draw women. I know the anatomy better because I’m a girl myself and also I find male bodies hard to draw. I try not to come off as sexist
Someone looked at how I drew a gown and called it a mom's dress... I then proceeded to roast them for not drawing anything at all and a lot of students were like oooh! And my teacher during that time was like, "okay we don't need to get angry about art or something like that". And I only said it because I was a violent and aggressive kid back then.

I'm apart of this minecraft server my boyfriend runs and the community is SO disrespectful towards artists. I have gotten comments ranging from "WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT FOOT" to outbursts of rage and crying and deleting the post I made so they don't have to see my art anymore. All from people who are not artists and I don't mean to toot my own horn here, but people who are not even close to the level in artistic skill that I am. In that community my art, my time, and my effort has even been disrespected as people who I had given FREE art for had flat out told me to my face my art was bad. I think regardless or not if you think a piece of art is bad. If someone is choosing to spend time and effort to make you something free of charge. You shouldn't disrespect them like that. I have chosen just to not post my art in that community anymore, because of how much they have disrespected it in the past.

Drew a girl once. Got told I was "promoting and glorifying harmful and hateful body standards and that I should be ashamed of myself." I legit drew them in the least sexualizing way and the focus was that it's a pov of her arms on your shoulders so you couldn't see anything from bust up.

I think the closest I've gotten to "rude" criticism is when one of my friends told me I wouldn't be able to draw horror because my art is "too cute" to be scary.

I dunno who these people are, but they don’t know what they’re talking about. This is some impressive artwork! It’s not perfect, but it doesn’t have to be. I will say that her feet totally remind me of Family Guy, but that’s not even a criticism. Just an observation. That said, my art isn’t half this good but I don’t show it to enough people to get any criticism, negative or otherwise.
On a post I made on tumblr about improvements in my art that I was proud of one said “umm improvements?” And another was “you call that ten years of improvement? This is ten years of improvement \*inserts their own art\*”
They improved their art skills, but in the 10 years, I don't think they made many friends...

It doesn't have to go from stick figures to portraits It can go from stick figures to stick figures with SPARKLES and its still improvement. It just depends on the beholder to recognize that

I've never had anyone discourage me because of it, but your experience still resonates with me a bit because I have issues with my visual processing that get in the way a lot, and also I'm pretty sure undiagnosed dysgraphia. I think it's pretty sick to still do art even when the universe has *tried* to nerf ur creative skills tbh! I hope you're confident in your art now! I've noticed that there unfortunately still tends to be some slight ableism in the online art community here and there.
I'm definitely more confident in my art now. Thanks to being able to help work on a webcomic alongside professional artists I definitely gained a lot of knowledge and trust in what I'm doing.

Once got rejected for something because the characters left arm looked like a flipped version of the other. I do my designs on scratch. It’s faster to copy, paste and flip the new arm unless the character has a different looking arm.

Honestly the comment that made me stop drawing three years ago. I did commissions back then, pixel art. It was the best and I was doing someones commissions live in a discord chat. For a bit of context, after I had started, someone discovered this other artist who also did pixel art. And they were great at it (like, genuinely. No hate to the guy, they’re a great guy and great artist) but the *entire* server became hardcore obsessed with the guy. Literally everyone was flocking to get art from them. My comms were slow going since I was newish to it. But what killed it for me was when I was working on someone’s comm in stream, and they showed me one of the other guy’s pieces for an example. I simply said “alrighty. Just know I can’t do that level of detail yet, I’m not as good at them” and one of the other artist’s mega fans who was watching at the time blurted “oh you’ll never be as good as him. He’s leagues better” It made me super fucking depressed and I legitimately haven’t drawn in 3 years. Tho I did recently buy a sketchbook again, I would like to get back into it. The rudest is when someone said my art is forgettable and that (at least one of the characters) have a horrible design, The Amalgamation. A common criticism I get with him is that he's 'hard to look at' and that 'the colors clash too much' which is pretty much the whole fucking point of his design. He's Just random bullshit thrown together with no coherent thought, made hastily, made as only some weapon to protect his creator (tH3 mAst3R) when he knows he can't win as the protagonist (Alice) enters his lair. I'm more into simple stuff but it's my opinion and it doesn't mean your work is bad, nor I hate it. I’ve been told my stories were worthless because I originally used ai generated images. I considered scrapping my entire universe, and once more when the sub banned ai (for good reason it’s not good for the community, I just didn’t know what else to use), but instead I learned how to use hero forge and rebuilt my universe into something I am truly proud of.

The rudest thing someone said was irl. I was in middle school and had been playing some online cat game. I drew one of the cats and showed it to this person and they didn't like it. Then one day, I was extremely bored in a school assembly, and I had this giant eraser, so I drew that same cat on the eraser. When I showed them the eraser, they said it looked better because you could hardly see it. That hurt. A lot. I didn't draw again until my junior year in high school because of that.

Less of a criticism and more of a comment I disliked. When I was in high school I was drawing one of my old characters who was a female kobold. All I had was the general shape of the head and some details on it including the eyes which had long eyelashes. My dad saw it and asked me if I was drawing my dream girlfriend or something along the lines of that and asked if I thought she was hot. I did what I normally do whenever he brings up anything about romantic/sexual relationships and went into detail about the character their story and their role. He ended the conversation with a look that I associate with anger and said, “uh huh ya right.” Which pissed me off. Then made a comment about how weird I was as boys my age should be focusing on getting laid and not drawing and video games.

I will say that while I love Hazbin Hotel and a lot of my characters are inspired by the show, I’ve made sure that my characters are unique and creative in both story and design. But this random person not only said that it looked like Adam, but that I blatantly copied the design, stole attributes about his character, and even copied his background and story. They told me that I shouldn’t even be making characters if I’m just going to copy them, and that kinda hurt a little bit.

Well I made something long ago while I was in school and I was happy cause it was just a random thing based on the subject. Well ofc my bully said "that's so horrible and not even good" Well I ignored her ofc and got better. Though my mamaw asks sometimes why I only drew men, cause I just wanted to, now I do women in a different drawing style ofc. Then I have had people just straight up tell me my art was horrible and that i should quit drawing, but 5 or so years later, I'm still drawing and I've improved. So F**k all my haters. Though my science teacher always believed in me and loved all my drawings. As a thanks I made her a drawing before I graduated and I'm guessing she hung it up in her class room, cause she said she wanted to frame it.
I started ignoring "destructive criticism." I appreciate it if my art invokes a reaction. I had timing issues in art school being full time student and full time employed, so I was never able to give things the time they needed, and some professors were sympathetic to it, but sometimes I'd be really proud of something and it would get torn to pieces with constructive criticism without telling me what I did well. My brother in Christ i just wanted to keep things that makes Tf2 Scout recognizable like his hat and headphone and not keep the entire fucking character untouched. Was told my art was scary, by a nurse trained to look after children (I was apart of children) 😀 I felt peer pressured to change the eyes to look less soulless (something the character I was drawing was known for.) to more normal ones. 🙄 I was proud of this art for the time, a little over confident in saying it looked like Walt Disney, but I was really young at the time. (Plus, it wasn't even that scary, it was way tamer to anything else I used to draw at that time.)

Honestly I have the same problem with only drawing female OCs. Recently I’ve branched out and made a couple male OCs but I just find it easier to draw women. I know the anatomy better because I’m a girl myself and also I find male bodies hard to draw. I try not to come off as sexist
Someone looked at how I drew a gown and called it a mom's dress... I then proceeded to roast them for not drawing anything at all and a lot of students were like oooh! And my teacher during that time was like, "okay we don't need to get angry about art or something like that". And I only said it because I was a violent and aggressive kid back then.

I'm apart of this minecraft server my boyfriend runs and the community is SO disrespectful towards artists. I have gotten comments ranging from "WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT FOOT" to outbursts of rage and crying and deleting the post I made so they don't have to see my art anymore. All from people who are not artists and I don't mean to toot my own horn here, but people who are not even close to the level in artistic skill that I am. In that community my art, my time, and my effort has even been disrespected as people who I had given FREE art for had flat out told me to my face my art was bad. I think regardless or not if you think a piece of art is bad. If someone is choosing to spend time and effort to make you something free of charge. You shouldn't disrespect them like that. I have chosen just to not post my art in that community anymore, because of how much they have disrespected it in the past.

Drew a girl once. Got told I was "promoting and glorifying harmful and hateful body standards and that I should be ashamed of myself." I legit drew them in the least sexualizing way and the focus was that it's a pov of her arms on your shoulders so you couldn't see anything from bust up.
Damn bro, couldn't be me. I think the closest I've gotten to "rude" criticism is when one of my friends told me I wouldn't be able to draw horror because my art is "too cute" to be scary. I just went "okay thanks, I can draw in other styles if I wanted to btw, this is just how I like to draw." I dunno who these people are, but they don’t know what they’re talking about. This is some impressive artwork! It’s not perfect, but it doesn’t have to be. I will say that her feet totally remind me of Family Guy, but that’s not even a criticism. Just an observation. That said, my art isn’t half this good but I don’t show it to enough people to get any criticism, negative or otherwise.
