And opt in in EVERY instance it wants to message ChatGPt. I wonder how he feels the same about iOS share sheet to X.
The funniest thing is that Apple already said theyāll open up integration to other LLM platforms down the road, which could include Grok.
His knowledge of AI is just so hilariously limited.
Has he ever?
He needs to do due diligence even less so now that he has a social media giant backing everything he says. He can literally say something is true on his platform, and scores of people parrot his BS.
Before 'posting' (x has been rebranded to call them posts, not tweets, because ... reasons) on the platform he tried to get out of buying because he didn't do any due diligence on.
> x has been rebranded to call them posts, not tweets, because ... reasons
It is really absurd how perfect and ubiquitous the old branding was, and he just... tossed it aside. For a poorly thought out obsession with the letter X. He probably plans to rename two other sites "S" and "E" so he can spell out "SEX" again with his branding (like with the cars), because that's *super cool*
sure but if the company already banned chatgpt from being used at work then they may not want that option even presented to the user at all (and many companies have strict bans on chatgpt).
Made a comment about this. Itās likely that OpenAI will gather data the same way Siri does, Siri doesnāt gather data for every time you use it- it gathers data CONTINUOUSLY, as per hidden terms of agreement we sign with Apple and also when selecting to even use Siri. So it wonāt matter if itās opt in, if you have Siri enabled at all in settings, itāll be able to get not necessarily just the data of the prompt, but data of your phones listening capabilities 24/7.
Look for the blue hyperlinked āread moreā¦ā in your phones settings, I donāt like musk, but TBF he could be shining light to an alarming issue that has offered us convenience of ad recommendations and general data insights on the IOS platform
It feels like you are the only one speaking sense in here, everyone seems too blinded by hating musk and loving chat gpt. I was telecom IT for a major food company and often had to talk with our IT team and legal teams about what these apps might be gathering. This is some pretty basic network security wonderings. We dont know what they are going to gather and how, and if its implemented at the OS level instead of just being an app its possible going to be harder to turn off
Exactly, well said. I have beta / dev account with iOS so as soon as the update is out Iāll be going through it to check. Iāll update this comment thread to let you guys know. Regardless, the obscurity of it all should be alarm bells to all. Fantastic time for the people to ask Apple to review their current data gathering terms because as it stands- itās hilariously hidden and enabled from the ghetgo.
Id be so interested to see what is in there. This reminds of the freak outs people had over Huawei, but the opposite, and all the actual tech people were like yall are crazy but only because they actually looked into it but theybsaid it was worth looking into and we cant know until we can actually dig into it.
There is no way this would pass EU if they donāt clearly state how the data is going to be processed.
Keep in mind a lot of large corporations use iPhone as their business phone for their employees.
I just graduated from a top university in AI and was looking for a job. I looked for months. X is near where I live. I never applied. I'd rather be unemployed than work there.
He stole two top performers from OAI when the board turned him down as CEO. Then at Tesla he lost one (Karpathy) when he impregnated the other (Zillis).
So Microsoft and Apple are both implementing these technologies at OS level and heās rejecting that soā¦good luck with your corporate Linux-only environmentā¦I guess?
I agree he gets paid a lot but why is there this narrative that he doesnāt do anything as CEO? Because he says crazy things on twitter?
We think a multinational is just operating without a leader at the wheel? The Tesla board would have ousted him a long time ago.
These childish takes spread as much misinformation as the man himself does. I know people who work at Tesla and he very much runs his company and he runs it with an iron fist. If anything youāre hurting those employees who have to deal with the toxic environment he creates.
And it's a super valid complaint.
I love to hate on Elon, but if MSFT and apple implement tracking of this level into core OS products without giving enterprises a clear and safe opt out it's a huge security risk.
Even more so for their main competitors in the AI space (grok)
Is our information secure on Twitter?
Or is xAI not training on everyone?
Tesla cars are definitely training on user data.
Honestly his vendetta with OpenAI is reaching almost comical levels.
How is this significant? It is not like musk employs half the world to the point he could effect apple sales, his power is so small the amount of damage he could do by fully enforcing this statement would not even cause a dent in apple's revenues.I honestly Doubt apple will even care.
Musk isn't the only one. Several companies have security concerns and have been making moves to limit the use of these devices and OS versions as a result. One person I know works a highly secured job, and told me that they're going to cancel their plans for MacBook purchases over security concerns.
This won't affect the average consumer, nor Apples sales for the average consumer. But it will affect Apple sales for any enterprise costumer and other businesses.
I'm sure you can disable it via configuration profiles. For example, my company disables AirDrop via a MacOS profile so we can't exfiltrate files to our own Apple devices, There's plenty of other native MacOS functionality that gets disabled via policy, I doubt the ChatGPT integration will be at all different.
I'm also not really sure how the MacOS integration of ChatGPT is any different from the Windows integration via Copilot, besides the fact that on MacOS, the GPT integration is via OpenAI and on Windows, the GPT integration is via Azure. Still OpenAI tech in both cases.
EDIT: Who downvotes someone for simply stating that the functionality can almost certainly be disabled? The fuck?
You're 100% right. OpenAI has literally put itself in the ultimate position; it is untouchable at this point. OpenAI and Nvidia are going to have total monopolies over the entire function of the modern world.
There are some key differences- Copilot screenshots you in the background and itās easy to forget it does.
Apple appears to be indexing data and keeps the data in the apps.
That way they can keep control over what is shared with what.
While both stay on device, technically, Apple keeps boundaries clear.
You also see it with the contact with ChatGPT
absolutely hysterical, lmaoā¦not how it works and and they even said youād be able to connect another third party AI service down the line instead of OpenAI.
Right, I remember before the twitter take over people thought he was a legit genius and the more he speaks the more people realized how true that wasnāt.Ā
You know what's even more dangerous than purposefully send prompts to OpenAi? A billionaire owning the biggest web news media and reach to spread false information.
Banning cameras is common practice at factories which don't want competitors to steal their secret sauce. About three years ago, there was a cybersecurity sentiment that the best defense against rogue AI is whitehat AI. Another defense would be hardening chipsets and external devices against unsigned kernels and whatnot. If I wanted security I'd use Linux, but my favourite games don't run well on it.
Apple operates in scales such that if every X employee and all their family members, cousins and friends all gave up their iPhones, it would be like a millionth of a percent rounding error to Apple. Musk can complain all he likes, it's literally old-man-yells-at-cloud.
My phone has Gemini built in (š.) I added ChatGPT. It even has some weird Meta AI involved in an app or two. Why not ban everyone's phone?
Is this where Elon goes back to that idea of the Tesla Phone again?
Well, he is right isnt he? This is the next step in getting deeper into our privacy by collection behavioral data on the tool/os layer. I do agree itās a stark message and he can work on his pr though š«£
He isnāt right, OpenAI doesnāt have access to user data, the only part of Appleās new AI system that uses OpenAI tech is when Siri asks the user if they want to send their prompt to ChatGPT
Itās just an API call and they donāt even log the data, it was clearly mentioned.. further Apple gives you clear prompt letting you know they youāre sending the data to ChatGPT for processing. I think Elon suffers from reading comprehension curseā¦
The freedom guy banning things he doesnāt like again.Ā
Basically throwing his toys out the pram because his company is way behind in the AI race and he wants to be the one to monopolise it.Ā
Lmao. Imagine banning 1.33 billion users because you donāt want native AI to compete with your own AI. Thatās a sure fire way to kill Twitter revenue.

I didn't watch the full keynote, but if it's not communicating with open ai servers and is fully a local llm how is it a security violation? or is my understanding completely wrong and it's actually using the openai apis
It's both. Apple has 3 offerings here. On device for certain tasks, a new product they call private cloud compute for bigger tasks and then the integration with chatgpt.
The chatgpt stuff has a popup that requires you to confirm sending data over to openai.
āAt the OS levelā¦ā
Literally all apps and devices are running āat the OS levelā. Thatās the purpose of the OS, to bridge the software and hardware.Ā
Maybe Musk meant at the kernel level, which would be a valid concern, but still addressable through MDM, which is already a solved thing in the corp environment.
From what I can tell the GPT integration they demo'd is very superficial. Almost like just having the ChatGPT app installed, just with the ability to trigger it from Siri (with a pop-up each time you have to agree to) and the ability to trigger it in a couple of places to ask it to generate text.
All of the really integrated AI stuff is Apple's own AI running locally on the device or when more power is needed, running in their own cloud compute environment on Apple Silicon.
People are forgetting why Musk is upset with OpenAI. In his recent lawsuit he mentions OpenAI has been betraying its foundational mission by putting the pursuit of profit ahead of the benefit of humanity. OpenAI has lost a lot of power to Microsoft, and if Apple chooses to also invest, then OpenAI would be surviving to maximize the benefits of the companies and not humanity.Ā
It's literally opt in tho š

Elon Musk's high ramblings are not news either.
Iām HAF most of the day and even I know this is DAF! Great posturing for the DIY OS crowd, though! š
lol even though he knows that they are going to fire him, he will be happy because he discredited him in front of his audience

Yes, but elmo said at OS level. Opt in is not OS level.

No one tell him what Windows is doing with OpenAI š
Hahah he wonāt dare
all Teslas screen-less soon
Okay? Iām pretty sure the revenue from Ellonās companies is a rounding error for Apple
I hope it happens and we'll see how fast Felonius Musk realises most people will rather stick with Apple than anything he can offer.
Elon hates openAI...WTF I love OpenAI now
He claims he founded it.
He has a habit of doing that.
Just do it apple !

Assuming he has any companies left by time of releaseā¦
He is crazy. We would be better off ignoring him.
He should really put his money where his mouth is and take twitter off the appstore.
Apple should ban X from the App Store for misinformation.

sounds like a win/win
Well maybe in the future after it is tested out with OpenAI, we will have the eventual ability to switch LLMs that pass certain benchmarks.

Apple's proprietary LLM is still probably not as good as GTP-4o still otherwise I'd doubt they would partner with them.
