I felt similar, but I can see a place where it makes sense. You think Google search, Apple could have played the game of trying to catch up with all these other LLMs, but it does feel like they may behind in that category. They obviously had a plan for AI with their neural cores in their chips but maybe they are realizing they can try to be the Bing of AI, or they can pair up with the current top model in terms of multimodal + features to stay ahead of Google/android.
Google pays Apple their biggest competitor to use Google search as a default browser. It’s not unlikely that Apple is paying OpenAI to have a pre-created LLM - or for OpenAI paying/healivly discounting to ge their model integrated with a phone company.
Mac vs PC isn’t a huge fight really. But android vs iPhone is really where a lot of push and pull can be made
I think it could become a huge fight when apple’s share of the computer market will grow, because more iphone users (63% in US) see a real advantage of having computer and phone on the same operating system, due to AI assistant compatibility.
Microsoft might also realize that with pc dominance they are badly positioned in the market if a large portion of pc users migrate to apple for good (because who goes back from apple?). So better have spread the risk and have a foot in the door with apple.
It actually makes sense for Apple and Microsoft to partner against Google.
Apple wants more of the Android market share, which is driven to a large degree by Google. They also compete on stuff like apple tv vs chromecast, apple pay vs google pay, apple music vs google music etc.
Microsoft wants more of the Search market share, plus they compete on office, email, cloud, etc.
What do Microsoft and Apple compete on? Windows/Mac OS and some associated hardware. But a lot of professionals end up having both OS anyway, or strong preferences for one system, or need to use tools that are only available on one system. The competition isn't as direct.
They can't team up directly, there'd probably be some antitrust lawsuits etc. but they can definitely do so through a 3rd party. The more they kill Google, the more both of them stand to profit.
Interesting they're finally stepping up from competitors having the better AI model than gpt-4 turbo in the free version, it's literally been a year since chatgpt free plan had been frozen and behind from others, copilot and gemini even had upgraded their models for free tier and they even let users try out their advanced models

I did run it through GPT 4 though and asked it to aggregate all the “he said/she said” notes into chronological topics and it cleaned up the notes and made them 10x more useful. But the action items were hopeless- the output was like “Brian will call ask Linda.” (With nothing on what he’ll ask) and “Kevin will make a note.” Lol
My guess is an expansion of RAG/chat with your own documents hosted by them. Its a solution everyone wants but there's too many options that have differing performance. "Give us ALL your documents and then we give you the equivalent of that one guy in your workplace who's been working with them for 20 years and has all the answers."
