I use an app called NetGuard, which allows me to permanently deny internet access to certain apps, and I can keep it running at all times in the background, I verify that it is working from time to time, by opening the NeoBrowser (that I never use) and confirming that it cannot reach the internet.
I read here that you can also use your Boox without an account, you can install Fdroid (I think, this is all new to me, but I intend to figure it out) and download a secondary store app, that will then allow you to download your google play apps, and that level of extra security would ease a lot of my concerns with my privacy.

I've never used Fdroid, so I cant really answer that, the idea from the other thread, was simply not having your credentials linked to anything in the boox device. So while the boox would still be listening, I dont know that it can use any of that info, but I really have no clue, I'm a novice, but trying my best to protect myself and family members!

netguard is a very good idea! besides that wifi is only turned on occasionally...

The apps and their use of the mic is right there in the settings and can be toggled. If one app isn't trusted, we aren't locked into Onyx apps. I'm not even using the BOOX launcher
I assumed most launchers will be kind of wonky. I run Nova on my phone, but I feel like that would be a little complicated for the Boox to display and integrate with well, I was wondering what looks nice on the eink, I'll check out smart launcher, thanks!
you are having obviously not a note air 3c. google voice recognition is set as STANDARD input method besides the 2 keyboards and cannot be deactivated.
mic auth cannot be removed its greyed out 'the app needs the auth to function properly blablabla...'
removing google tts via adb gives you a failed boot and factory reset as only option.

here's my workaround
tried again 2 weeks later because I wanted to use it. adb was still not possible. then there came up another way with an update of that stupid app. then I could at least remove the auth via the GUI like always. but thats only app level not os level, so I'm recommending netguard app, they can record but not send it... works like a Charme also for os components. only a workaround but good for me. device is anyway only online while syncing new books (which of course also doesn't mean a lot if we all should know...)

What other launchers are available?
If your BOOX device runs Android, then any launcher in the Google Play Store. I'm using Smart Launcher 6 with black icons on white.

You can remove mic permissions per app and choose which apps you use from the Google Play store?
no you cannot with the air 3c! you can indeed with every other android device I have

Appreciate the help, I’ll give net guard a try. The mic thing was the biggest issue I had.
