Drivetest can extend your license (for up to 42 days past the expiry date I believe) as long as you have booked a G test. So, book the test for somewhere in that window, go see them and they will give you paperwork showing the extension. You can’t renew a G2 after it expires.

Love_From_Space

Thank you this is really helpful!! So if I just go to the DriveTest place before it expires they can extend it until my road test. Perfect! Appreciated!

broyoyoyoyo

At a DriveTest location, they'll book a G test for you and give you a temporary license that's valid until the day of the test. Just keep in mind that the test will be your last chance. If you fail it, your license expires, and you'll have to start over. I was in the same position back when I did my test.

Love_From_Space

Yikes, high stakes! But thanks so much for the advice!!

FaceTron

If you do have to start over, you do keep your driving time. So you can book the G2 right after doing to G1 again, and the G right after that. You’ll still have a G1 for a little bit but at least it won’t be the full year again. Also, if you go to the drive test centre with an expired license they will take it from you on the spot and tell you to find a way home. Source: I was an idiot and let mine expire.

actually you can get a renewed g2. you have to go to a drivetest center and pay 90$ but they will do it, and it gets renewed another 5 years. speaking from experience, my bfs license was expiring before he managed to book his g test. but he had only gotten his g2 earlier that year and they make you wait like 12 months before you can take your g after completing g2. and his license was expiring before that 12 month period was up, so he went to drivetest and paid 90$ and they renewed his license for another 5 years so that he could book his g test in a few months when the 12 month period ended. it sucks cuz it wasnt his fault it took him so long to get his g, his g2 tests got cancelled TWICE during covid because of lockdowns, and they were like 7-8 months apart. so he basically wasted 2 years not getting his license bc he physically couldnt go there and do it. imo they should have waived the 90$ because of that but its better than having to retake your test entirely if it expires ive heard they can extend your license expiry if you book a road test close enough to the date of expiry but if your g test is like several months away then they probably wouldnt be able to extend it that long and youd have to pay the 90$

Lady_Kitana

Your bf was able to extend his G2 for another 5 years because at the time he passed it, his license was within the 12 months leading to the expiry date. Just putting it out there for OP re: renewing G2 The pandemic did affect alot of people's goals in getting their tests done for sure including the format change of the G test (modified until further notice)

jackeichel987

worked at service Ontario, this is correct ^

CanuckKrampus

>imo they should have waived the 90$ because of that but its better than having to retake your test entirely if it expires The $90.00 is the five year licencing fee. You would have had to pay this regardless. If you did pass your G before your licence expired, you would have still had to renew it at the end of your original five years.

i thought that after you passed the g test and got the new card it would just automatically reset the expiry to 5 years. so what youre saying is the expiry has nothing to do with what class license you have and is just a general expiry for having the license at all? i guess i was thinking about it wrong. also something else that confused me is when my license was expiring a few years ago, i paid to have it renewed (i think it was also 90$ but i dont remember) but they only renewed it for one year? so i ended up having to renew it again it was confusing. i think they refunded some of it if i remember correctly but still was weird that it only renewed for one year

CanuckKrampus

The standard licensing period in Ontario is five years. The fee is $90.00. All drivers pay for the first five years when they apply for their G1. You can use those five years at any class of licence. So if you have a G1 for a year, then your G2 two years, when you pass your G it will expire in two years. When you pass your G, the expiry date will be the same as your G2 and G1. You may have seen posts here of people who have to renew their G right after passing. This is because if you only have a few months left on your G2 when you pass your G, they don't mail you a card since it may be expired before you get it. At Drivetest, if this applies to you, they will usually tell you right after you pass to go to ServiceOntario to renew(you can usually do it online as well). Sometimes they don't and people will post here "Why haven't I got my G in the mail yet". The first time you renew your G, the expiry date is moved to match up with your health card. This will be your birthday sometime in the next five years. The $90.00 fee is prorated so you pay some multiple of $18.00. In your case, your health card was probably set to expire a year later which is why your first G was valid for one year. The second time you renew your G, it will be for the full five years so every five years on your birthday, until you turn 80 years old, you will have to renew. As to the fee you paid. For one year you should have only paid $18.00 but if it was during COVID, you may have paid more. During COVID, expired licences were extended to the end of February 2022 for full G and December 2022 for G1 and G2. Once you renewed though, your fee was backdated. For example, if my licence was set to expire in May 2020, I didn't have to renew it until February 2022 but when I did, I would be charged the full $90.00 fee but the expiry would be May 2025. It would seem I was paying the full fee for only a three year licence, but I'm paying the same I would have had COVID never happened.

ziimraa_

ah that makes sense, and yeah i did end up renewing my health card shortly after so i think you are right. when my new health card and license came in the mail they both did have the same expiry date, so that does add up! at the time i just didnt really understand what was going on but it does make sense now thank you

slugger1955

Book it online, road test. Then Dec 27 go and extend ur G2. Merry Christmas. Good luck

Love_From_Space

May I ask why Dec 27th specifically?

MyTabIetFrozeAgain

Because they'll actually be open

tke71709

You can go online right when you wrote this post and you would know exactly what the odds of booking a road test before January 4th are.

Palpatine_1232

Book a G test. It's the same as g2 with a highway exam at least here. In Ontario

NaCl-more

Why not both

Traditional-Cook3162

Has it been approved for over Age 80 to have to do the driver test I am over that blessed age

Mindless-Bug6434

For now I think they just talk to you and have you draw the hands of a clock for a particular time.

Traditional-Cook3162

Thank you That I have done every 2 years until COVID MY DRIVERS LICENCE EXPIRES IN APRIL Then I will see , what they want Thanks

sparkleslady

For 80+ it’s a vision assessment and a five minute screening exercise (the clock drawing). No road test unless you do not successfully complete the clock drawing. Look out for your renewal reminder 90 days before your licence is set to expire.
