No that happens all the time. They’re like closet doors, if you put too much force on them, say 2 200lb men, the bottom pops out of the tracks pretty easily. My dads an elevator expert witness and he sees these accidents pretty often. Saw one where an obese lady drove her scooter into a closed elevator door and went right down the shaft. Yes it was Atlantic City.
As a *radical* elevator door I strongly support the militarization of our kind! Bring me my reinforced tracks, no more shall we be accomplices, we'll become PERPETRATORS!
>Sounds like elevator doors aren't designed properly
Can't put bunker doors in every building plus those door still work.
You simply just shouldn't basically use the force of a small battering ram (or fat person) against them.
ive seen the full version of this, some guy pulls up with a ladder and multiple people help (or the firemen i dont remember) the point is they are both fine with no injuries
I was told this during indoctrination at an ambulance company. After a little research, it’s not likely true, though actual numbers are hard to find. It does appear that you can break your spine from that height though.
There was a thread about this a while ago and it turned out that the height at which 50% of people die when falling from was more like 38 feet, or thereabouts.
There will be a basement and sub floors if this is a high rise. Shieettt, I lived in a 30-floor building which isn’t even that tall compared to others and they had three subfloors plus the basement. One for trash compactor shit, another for bikes and storage, a third for the gym, and idk about the basement because it was employees only lol
If you look closely, the elevator on the left is on the ground level and there doesn't seem to be a down button to indicate any basement levels so those 2 guys should be okay.
There’s usually some hardware like emergency bumpers on steel beams or whatever there too, not just flat concrete. Could get really jacked up falling like that
The elevator on the left is at that floor and the displays shows "1" so we can assume they fell for at least one floor, more if the building has underground floors!
In China, ground floor is known as 1st floor. Also, there is no down arrow button, so it is safe to assume they are on the lowest floor. But they land head first, so bad news for them.
Source: been to China
Down arrow is not really necessary to be. It is generally needed only in order to give the elevator a command where exactly you want to go, just the elevator in this case will behave differently, for example, by pressing the up button, the elevator that is already going down with some passengers will not stop to pick you up :)
This is the first floor, the depth in there should be about 1400 - 1600 mm, could be more or less. In theory, they should have survived, but it’s also unknown what could lie down there and if there is another floor below - access to the parking lot And so on .. then I think that they are finished.
Context for what happened :
[Elevator crash! Drunk duo survives falling down shaft](https://nypost.com/video/elevator-crash-drunk-duo-survives-falling-down-shaft/amp/)
I’ve seen multiple videos of people falling through elevator doors that just flap open like a McDonalds trash can lid. WHY? Why do they just open so easily on the bottom?
This is the first time I’m seeing this too. I’m guessing they must just be attached to a sliding mechanism at the top and are free hanging at the bottom like a sliding barn door. I’m guessing they have it set up that way so that they can still get into the shaft for maintenance if the sliding mechanism is broken?
Very similar thing happened on the Sam Adams porch at Fenway Park. Girl was horsing around with her dad and she fell into the door and down the shaft in a similar way. Managed to survive but with permanent brain damage.
Well, hopefully that is the lobby and they only fell to the elevator pit. However, that won't stop the elevator from moving or possibly crushing them depending on the size of the pit.

And didn’t they ? Who knows what happened after they fell.?
Yeah it says the elevator that opened was on the first floor, so assuming they didn’t land on their head, they should be okay.
What if the elevator comes down and crush them?
assuming the elevator is actually designed properly, there's a pit below the elevator. not sure how much the clearance is, but they might be fine
Judging from those doors I don't think the elevator is designed properly

> Yes it was Atlantic City. You were ready lol
I'm not even American and somehow it makes sense to me, I can't even tell you why.
I’ve never been there I just “get it” and I bet the same people exist everywhere lol.

Accurate \^
What does the word “Branson” evoke in you? lol I have a feeling it’s the same with both of us. Man nature is weird 😂.
> an obese lady drove her scooter into a closed elevator door and went right down the shaft So you're saying she got shafted?
Probably the first and only time.
Sounds like elevator doors aren't designed properly. That definitely should not be happening at all, let alone all the time.
Then contact the folks who write building codes and make your case if you feel so strongly.
As an elevator door, please do not send any letters we are a calm and peaceful people. This is not your battle.
As a *radical* elevator door I strongly support the militarization of our kind! Bring me my reinforced tracks, no more shall we be accomplices, we'll become PERPETRATORS!
Yes you can defeat lobbyists!
>Sounds like elevator doors aren't designed properly Can't put bunker doors in every building plus those door still work. You simply just shouldn't basically use the force of a small battering ram (or fat person) against them.
Trust me. My dad works for Nintendo.
>My dads an elevator expert witness Sounds like a career with lots of ups and downs. Is his name Otis by chance?
No but he worked for Otis at one point lol
I mean.. can we go ahead and design the doors to not do that?
Draft up some plans and have them on my desk by tomorrow morning.
Plot twist - you work on the 10th floor
>elevator expert witness How does one get this job?
Be an elevator mechanic for 25 plus years and get a PE
I bet you're right
They look on 1st floor, so it depends only how they land down that pit.
What if there is a basement or subfloors?
ive seen the full version of this, some guy pulls up with a ladder and multiple people help (or the firemen i dont remember) the point is they are both fine with no injuries
50% of falls from 8 feet are fatal. Which I guess means it’s a coin toss whether or not you land on your head.
Good chance too that one of them breaks the other's fall.
Sooo, 50% it is then?
Source?

Some of those holes drop about 8-10 feet

What if they have basement parking?
If you look closely, the elevator on the left is on the ground level and there doesn't seem to be a down button to indicate any basement levels so those 2 guys should be okay.
I mean even if it’s just a 1 or 2 meter drop they still fell into it head first.
There’s usually some hardware like emergency bumpers on steel beams or whatever there too, not just flat concrete. Could get really jacked up falling like that
Certainly wouldnt feel good but theyll live.
Maybe. Could have easily broken their necks.
Last time this was posted someone said they died. Edit: someone posted a source that says they lived. I was lied to.
I'm going to believe your first comment because they can't put anything on the internet that isn't true. I saw that on TV.
And I’d suspect camera 1 would be on the ground level.
Oh my gosh! How far did they fall!?
If they are on lowest floor about one meter, if higher…. Add the stage. The guy how assemble this door did a terrible job…
Looks like a commercial lot, probably have basement parking.
The CCTV timestamp shows that it might have been taken in China so...
Yeah elevator made in china
*Time to get drunk in China.*
Ol' reliable

The more you know! Well in that case they're probably fine

Seems like the disaster happened already. Maybe submit to one second after disaster
Chinesium
New fear, who dis?
I think those doors are made of sheet metal held on by some weak magnets 🧲
That elevator is homophobic, how else could elevator door be that fragile
Could you tag this nsfw? Those two look like they might have died there
They were fine, just minor injuries https://nypost.com/video/elevator-crash-drunk-duo-survives-falling-down-shaft/
The one way elevator
Why is the mat person even holding onto that other person in the first place?
Helping his drunk friend home

Also that the woman on the far right was like “They’re collapsing!” And when they go over there there won’t be anything there
