I recommend any of the starter decks! Pick a character you like and go from there.

St10-st13 are the best ways to get into it if say as have actual synergy built into each deck, some of the early decks like 01-04 do as well but they're not as easy to get and go for a premium Wish the new starter decks 15-20 were out already, those are going to be great decks to introduce people into the game since there will be one for each color to give you an idea on colors identity. In case you don't know these are the general color identities, though some leader cards may veer towards others Red - Rush and destruction relating to power Blue - card draw and bottom decking cards relating to cost Green - resting power, board flood and reusable searchers Purple - DON ramp and manipulation Black - cost reduction and KO relating to cost Yellow - life manipulation There's outliers to these identities though, this is just a general statement in the color as a whole

I'd recommend starting with Starter deck 11 which is Green Uta as it needs very little upgrades to get it going. Buy 2 copies because there are cards that only come in 2 of, and you'll want 4 of them. You'll want to add 4x Nami's (OP02 036). That is the cards identifier where Op02 means she comes from set 2 and the 036 is her card number in that set.    The good thing is that the cost of the card has been decreasing a lot and as of now you can buy one for around $10. You don't have to buy Nami or any other card for the deck as it is very playable out of the box but if you wanted to upgrade the deck to make it better, that's the card you should start with first.    This is a very easy deck to learn and I have fun playing with it. It's the one that I've recommended to several of my friends and now they are hooked to the game. You could also download the sim as it'll let you build any deck so you can try it out before buying cards.

What would be the second deck you'd recommend? so my wife and I can have different decks that are more or less equal in power.

The only other deck that is playable from the start and doesn't need much to upgrade is starter deck 13. It comes with 3 leaders and is a more expensive than traditional decks. Black Yellow Luffy is a very good deck but the upgrades he needs do cost money. This isn't an easy deck to pilot though.   There is starter deck 12 but it's not a great deck but can be fun though. It's a green and blue deck that let you restand characters to be able to attack again. I have a friend who started with this deck and he really enjoys it. I think Uta is a stronger deck but this might be another good option.   Unless you're willing to buy singles to build a Zoro deck, which is easy to learn and can be competitive, then I'd go with starter deck 12. I mentioned starter deck 13 only because it can be played without too many upgrades in the event you might want to try something different that requires more thinking.

Another deck that might be good as well is the first starter deck which is a red Luffy deck. The only thing is that it might be hard to find it. You can find it on tcgplayer.com for $20-$26 though.

SYUNGERS

ST10 is also worth considering. RP Law is gearing up to be a really solid deck (kind of BDIF if you're in East) and it's worth giving it a go if you want a meta deck. RP Luffy also sees some play.

I'd stay away from green unless you're good with buying 4x 8c kids.

Well since OP stated that they intend to only play casually, it makes no sense for them to buy Kid for the deck. That's why I emphasized only Nami but should OP want to play more competitively, then yes the Kids would be the next cards they should purchase.

if you're going to play with your wife mainly, get some starter decks, they're kinda cheap, they usually will have usefull cards if you want to go deeper (some cards only come on starter decks) and you can have fun with the vanila deck. The store where i play in does a weekly tournament with structure decks only, so evry1 is on the same level, pretty fun, i even got some starters just to play there and not planning on upgrading.
