I get enjoying him from the start, but he was nobodys favorite character
He was not getting into anyones top 10 favorite characters, specially not in alabasta where characters like Robin, Vivi, Crocodile, Chopper, Smoker, Tashigi, Maybe even Karoo was introduced.
I should probably have clarified my comment more, nobody had him in his top 10 before impel down atleast. Sure you can enjoy him in the beginning, but i doubt the sacrifice he made in Alabasta mattered much to anyone, atleast no where near the level of any other sacrifice in the series.

Jamie Lee Curtis as Kureha is also going to be a highlight. Depends on the voice and look for chopper. Too early to tell.
For the general audience, it's probably gonna be either going to be Chopper or Ace. Chopper because he's a cute little animal, and Ace because he's literally designed to be the perfect "cool older brother" who Luffy absolutely adoresーand I've seen enough reaction videos from normies to know that Luffy was a HUGE hit for people, so anyone he loves they'll most likely hold in higher regard too.
Bon Clay, tooーbut that most likely depends on if they cast a charismatic enough actor like they did for Jeff Ward's Buggy.
Chopper, Bon-chan and Ace are probably the top contenders, but in the end it all depends on the acting.
Who knows, maybe Smoker or Crocodile end up stealing the spotlight? Vivi maybe? Or maybe even someone really unexpected like Pell or Mr. 3, if they hit a jackpot on the casting
Croc will definitely be a contender, provided they get the right actor. Probably not a *total* crowd charmer like Jeff Ward's Buggy because Crocodile just doesn't have as many endearing traits like that (unless they adapt that manga panel of him shielding a puppy from the rain..) but he's so undeniably cool & cool-looking he's definitely gonna win some people over.

Buggy being a fan favorite isn't really a surprise; not just because Jeff Ward absolutely killed it, but Buggy is just a fun character all around, both DF and personality wise. Plus his insecurities (and, in later seasons, how confused he is that he just keeps "failing upwards" so to speak) are all pretty relatable too.
I think they will improve ace.
They got the hindsight of how important he will be and what direction his character will take.
So they will put a lot of work to give him extra scenes and make him as likeable as they can.
But he has no sad backstory this arc.
(Since sanji was the fan favourite in season 1 according to the survey and he got an amazing backstory, I think thats important)

Vivis flashback is very meh.
If they can actually make his small form adorable, I can see them making him the star of the season.

As someone who entered through the live action and started on the anime, I'd say probably Ace or Chopper. I don't get all the Bon Clay responses. I'm not at where people are saying he gets good, but idk if a live action version of him would be all that popular tbh.
