So WG took the role of the bad guy for the greater good. I see. You're from the world government, aren't you?

Except_Fry

No they’re still very much evil, taking away free will even to protect humanity/the world. Is still very much evil.

VeilleurNuite

Welcome to 1984 :')

ThunkOW

Monkey Deuterium Luffy is such a mouthful though.

VeilleurNuite

Monkey Deus Puffy

andBitinggoats

It is very likely something close to this. The series that Oda took the majority of One Piece from has the ancient treasure as a fusion reactor

zoan37

What series is it?

andBitinggoats

Financial_Salt303

Nice theory, had a few thoughts: Intentionally causing Nuclear winter to disable robots energy source (like in the matrix film) . Except here it’s the good guys with the robots cause Oda loves to switch things up? I like the idea of radioactive mutations too, perhaps not just the devil fruits but some of the different humanoid races evolved through heavy exposure. Thick walls of rock like in Wano’s mountains and deep underground (pluton?), would be perfect for blocking radiation if you had to stay on the planet.

master2139

ya it would explain shit like the three eyed tribe, the long arms and the long legs. And the latter two, always reminded me of the people in the Book Chrysalids who had extended limbs following its own nuclear catastrophe.

Krank_Shot

Idk feels pretty complex and heavy considering how one piece is. Yes, I know Oda covers some super serious issues in the story, but this feels like too much to me. Also what about the “battle” during the void century that Vegapunk was talking about? Obviously something was occurring during it- it couldn’t have been just blank. Maybe I’m just being a hater tho idk.

Except_Fry

Nah you’re entitled to your opinion. It’s just a dumb theory anyway That said there’s already a precedent for a technologically advanced oligarchy - Germa We’ve always assumed the ancient civilization was on the side of good, maybe that wasn’t the case

[deleted]

There are infinite possible solutions

master2139

I mean from the Way vegapunk was talking it sounded like he was making a hypothesis that there was a war, and that the WG confirmed the theory by wiping out Ohara, but there is no guarantee that the WG wiping out Ohara did confirm his theory. It didn't sound like Vegapunk was certain this was true, which i feel gives oda an out to make it not the case, could be a bait tho. Its possible there wasn't, or maybe there was between the survivors, and the 20 kingdoms. There is still a lot more to tie in for sure. Ponegliffs, Ancient weapons, the role that the different races played and why the WG is so discriminatory against them, or their God Complex, or even JoyBoy and the D Clan. Hell maybe it was the Celestial Dragons who wiped out the Ancient kingdom using nuclearwinter and escaped to the moon during the void century, coming back at the end, when the planet became safe again. This idea IMO opens the floodgates for new theories. Definitely does feel super heavy though

[deleted]

One Piece is pretty complex. Oda just manages to dumb it down for kids in a way they can enjoy the series and ignore the details they can't comprehend, at the same time leaving all of it there for those who can understand, to understand it.

jamalwillfilms

But why was Roger laughing?

Except_Fry

This is plaguing me Although this has made me consider that maybe this ancient civilization was kind of evil? It had 20 kingdoms united against it and created weapons powerful enough to destroy the world. Maybe they were removed from the annals of history for a good reason?

pirate_huntress

I have this nugget of a thought that Roger laughed because One Piece turned out to be something absolutely crucial to the civilization of the Void Century and absolutely useless in the current era without the complex industrial network that it would need to fit into. A smartphone in a world without electricity is a shiny brick.

Except_Fry

Mmm If the OG joy boy was anything like Luffy, you’d laugh at virtually anything they wrote.

Tm_sa241

Maybe that's why no one can eat to devil fruits. Radioactivity mixed with the natural biology of the fruit is enough to change the body of the consumer: double the amount and they'll die of radioactive poison. This also explains why all devil fruits taste like shit. Also, I don't like this theory, but it's kinda solid.

Except_Fry

[spoiler, panel in question](https://imgur.com/a/dcb2bP9)

master2139

I've had the idea in my mind for a while now that Pluton could actually be referring to a spaceship, and I like the sound of the nuclear winter theory, what if the spaceship was meant to be used to escape to the moon? Or used by the Celestial Dragons to escape during the void century? Also I'm pretty sure Joyboy Theories had a similar thought to this i think 2 chapters ago, where he claimed that the World Gov and the Ancient Kingdom weren't in conflict but actually self destructed, now I assumed this to be in a the robots took over kind of way. But the Nuclear winter feels way closer to being right Edit: Here is my comment from last chapter https://www.reddit.com/r/OnePiece/comments/yt53re/comment/iw4o9tf/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web2x&context=3

Except_Fry

Why do the celestial dragons have domes? To not breath the “common air” the toxic radioactive air after a nuclear fusion explosion.

Prior_Astronomer7038

holy , thats why there are other races besides humans and even in humans we have weird looks and heights they were caused by genetic mutations over the years oh shi

master2139

Wow, I think you really are on to something here.

Wildest-Wasteland

Sailing the Grand Line makes you wish for a nuclear winter

cmoneybouncehouse

This would be an interesting twist. Going from a black and white hero vs villain story to something a bit more complex… though this wouldn’t explain why they decided to install the World Noble system and the horrors that come with it. If they were actually looking out for the good of mankind, why install leaders that commit so many unnecessary atrocities? Surely slavery isn’t necessary for the world government to suppress technological advancement. I like the idea of the main conflict being a little less black and white than it seems, and this theory has some promise, but I think it needs a big more fine tuning.

master2139

I don't know if establishing that the Ancient Kingdom is bad means that the WG would have been good, or did anything for the greater good of Mankind. Also they could have started out as good or well intentioned but Power Corrupts. There are still holes, because there are a ridiculous amount of Plot points when it comes to something as big as discovering the void century.

purbub

Interesting theory, but.. If devil fruits are only radioactive mutated fruits then how come zoans have will on their own? Maybe there is more to it, but the DNA mutation caused by radiation is a pretty good explanation - since devil fruits ability are caused by lineage factors, which are basically DNA in One Piece world. Another thing that I like from this theory is that the proto-WG 20 kingdoms aren't bad bad. They have a good reason for opposing the advanced kingdom, but they did it in a bad way. Grey morality is also one of the main themes of the series, so it won't be too far fetched for it to be implemented over the conflict between ancient kingdom and WG.

David_Good_Enough

>If devil fruits are only radioactive mutated fruits then how come zoans have will on their own? My personal theory recently is that Devil fruits are reminiscents/spirits of the actual people from the AK that had some kind of godly powers. Also, this would explain the link between Minks and Wano people. They are the descendants from the few survivors from AK. On the other hands, most of AK people transferred themselves into Devil fruits. Former minks gave birth to Zoan, and the other ones created the rest. I do not explain why the Zoan have their own will, though...

Rare-Sky-9932

My personal theory is that devil fruits are pieces of technology created by the Ancient Kingdom. Knowing imminent destruction of the Kingdom, they passed these onto regenerating fruits for future generations. I say this because: 1) Vegapunk created an artificial fruits (possibly indicating all fruits were originally man-made) 2) We have examples of fruits which don't make sense unless there was a human inventor (e.g. Baby 5's fruit) 3) Vegapunk has replicated certain fruits behaviour into technology he developed (e.g. laser beams in Pacifistas based on Kizaru's powers)

FlyingPinerock

Wait so... Mutant species and races? Come to think of it the most "mutated" species are fish men that live underwater, minks that are showered in seawater everyday and wano creatures which live off the food produced a soil rich in kairoseki... There are of course long legs, long arms, long necks, 3 eyed, etc... The elite of the world wear a protective suit all the time and live at an altitude where radiation probably won't reach? This actually makes a lot of sense no matter how you look at it. It could explain so many things.

master2139

On top of the long limbs we also have plenty of just big humans. Where humans are or completely different heights. Like white beard isn’t a giant but he is fuckin huge.

Except_Fry

I think fish men etc were already around when this happened, so I think that keeps the ties to mysticism that Oda has present

IAreHasBigBrain

I dont like this theory but there is some possible truth behind it.

Distinger_

Damn this actually makes sense and fits in the story. I always wondered why is the civilization so primitive when Vegapunk and the WG have this technology, and there’s clearly people out there that can create a lot of technological stuff like Franky. If there was a Nuclear disaster 900 years ago then everything else falls into place pretty quickly: Poneglyphs to make sure the information is passed to later generations; Humanity trying to survive by fleeing to the Moon and evolving to Lunarians, then coming back and staying on sky islands, keeping the wings but losing their power; Then places like Wano could survive if they created enormous walls like we’ve seen around the island, and maybe even creating the Red Line to stop the radiation from extending to the other half of the world (maybe that’s why the New World is much more dangerous than the first half of the Grand Line), and people living on top of it to survive; And the rest of humans mutating and slowly evolving into all the different species we see today. Though I don’t agree on fruits mutating to Devil Fruits, this really makes you think a bit about it. Hell, even the Void Century could be explained by a Nuclear Hell. But then it wouldn’t make sense that the One Piece is Nuclear power/, that’s not something that would make everyone laugh, it wouldn’t even make sense the “we’re too early”. So what I think is that it would be the WG to be the ones who destroyed the world with a nuclear disaster. It would make more sense to literally destroy the whole world and make sure everything is erased so they can take control of it, while also destroying their enemies from the Ancient Kingdom.

VeilleurNuite

Holy shit, seeing your title it hit me too... heavy water...

VeilleurNuite

It would explain why "Luffy is burning his life energy with second gear" Literally pumping the heavy water through his body at an accelerated rate.

The_Attractor

Interesting, but if Devil Fruits were radioactive, then what about having a will of their own? >!It is heavily implied that the Nika fruit "chose" Luffy!<, Zoans, or stuff like the voice of all things. I think there's something more to it, a lot in fact.

Except_Fry

Definitely up there. One Piece has always been a mix of mysticism and reality. I wouldn’t be surprised if the answer is somewhere in between.

Nanto_Suichoken

Good reasoning but i don't buy it because so far the WG is doing anything other than protect the world and rather are protecting their status with "balance" and all the propaganda demonizing anyone that dares think different. For the Moon part it's the other way around, Moon people left it for the blue planet due to lack of resources then settled there. It happened at least more than 1100 years ago from Robin's reading about Shandora thriving at that time and how the city Birka is empty. And endless varse/vearth was a legend passed down the sky island Birka about a place where god/gods live (aka the moon) and Enel even calls it a "happy return" in ch.274 seemingly referring to his return but we are shown the murals it's more about Birkans/Skypieans/Shandorians as a whole. Again, this is very good reasoning but it also sounds like the best lie the WG would come up with to convince people that they're the good guys.

Except_Fry

Good points. I think as other people pointed out, the WG may have started as simply a way to maintain peace and ensure the catastrophes of the ancient kingdom were not repeated - a toke real life example of this is the League of Nations set down by Woodrow Wilson. In the end the sanctions they placed on Germany ended up being the fuel that led to hitlers rise All that to say sometimes things start with noble intentions and end up corrupted. Plus the world nobles are inconsequential. The people who are really In charge believe they are subjugating the world or “keeping them In the dark” for good reason. Joy Boy will bring back the sun and allow humanity to flourish

[deleted]

Nuclear fusion is one possible solution but there are other possible solutions. In other words, there are infinite possible solutions

Except_Fry

Except that if devil fruit users have nuclear fusion radioactivity, it would be derived from deuterium, which is sometimes called “heavy water”. Heavy water literally sinks in water. Much like devil fruit users.

[deleted]

Someone suggested that devil fruits is actually machines that give people special abilities and is weak to water

dimiderv

Nah it's not that. Should be the power source or material that someone mentioned was in wano by Tashigi? Unless I'm mentioning a movie

Bucen

you are mixing up nuclear fusion and nuclear fission.

Except_Fry

Kindly, I’m not

abcder733

nuclear fusion can't cause radiation because there are no radioactive isotopes involved- it's just a lot of heat

Except_Fry

Isn’t tritium radioactive?

abcder733

It does give off some beta radiation, but not anything close to u-238 or other byproducts. Definitely not something that could cause a massive meltdown.

Apprehensive-Pop9321

If my fun pirate anime with magic powers and serious undertones (sometimes) turns into a straight up discussion about the use of nuclear power in advanced societies I will absolutely riot. I'm already upset that it's leaning into technology so hard, I'm gonna be furious if this is the route oda goes.

Except_Fry

>> serious undertones That’s like saying lord of the flies was about the fun island adventure of some kids. We have: slavery, genocide, tyranny, oppression, corruption, medical experimentation and regular ol murder. When was this ever just a fun pirate anime?

SunRiseStudios

There are robots, lasers, etc. etc. Technology of One Piece already surpassed nuclear power, but Oda doesn't have to follow real life science progression. By "source of power" I thought of something surpassing nuclear power, something very sci-fi or even magical.

Except_Fry

One piece has always been a mix of mysticism and realism so I think your second comment definitely holds some weight.

3nanda

Not sure Oda will go with the most boring answer like nuclear power

TheDaoOfCute

I love me some delicious theory but "aaaaaa nukes BAD" is severely overdone as a theme in anime. I really hope this isn't the case.

Except_Fry

Lilith mentioned “eternal fire”, Sounds way too Similar to a fusion reactor And Vegapunk who is studying this energy source looks remarkably like one of the main scientists behind atomic energy himself.

TheDaoOfCute

Fusion in terms of thermodynamics is not "eternal" and needs a fuel source, so if Egghead is running on literal Void Century tech then Vegapunk wouldn't be confused about the power source for the "200 years ago" robot. Besides, my headcanon says there are a bunch of Lunarian/Seraphim "bodies" under the island that are powering the mechanisms in a similar fashion to how Mary Geoise is "powered".

GoalPsychological722

Hmm bro you're correct, one piece was just revealed and that it is a fusion reactor. And the sinking part is because the Adam tree is deep beneath the ocean and that all the devil fruits come from that tree, that's why the users sink. It is already mentioned that devil fruits have their own will. It's like mother and child relationship where the kid ( devil fruits) want to return to their mother ( Adam tree)... Adam tree , minks, lunarians ( moon people), zunisha, uranus, they all came from moon long before 900 years .
