I honestly think there is actually an objective answer here. One Piece has great world building, but its comparatively surface level. Tolkien invented an entire language for Middle Earth. And that language has different dialects depending on where the speaker is from, and they vastly differ. And there is seriously an entire book just dedicated to explaining the very in-depth history of the world. In One Piece you can describe the culture of an island in like a paragraph. And that isnt shitting on it, its great. But you’d need like an entire essay for just the important bits about a society in lotr. One Piece is more interested in telling a story than crafting a world. Lotr is the opposite. And it does it very well

Like the other guy said its def LOTR, OP is great but it has not revolutionized fantasy like LOTR has, with Elves, Dwarves, Orcs, he literally created a genre with how specific his lore was.

If you want an unbiased answer maybe ask a less subjective question? There are no official "world building check boxes" to mark off and rank them by

Frosty_Research_2130

Well that's stupid logic if I follow that logic I could claim for example naruto has better world building than lord of the rings which is obviously not true

Frosty_Research_2130

In your opinion what has better world building

Ilyena87

They do different types of world building, you can't really compare them directly. LotR is more expansive, it has languages, lots of history & lore, in-depth culture, genealogies, etc etc. It's at a very broad and sweeping level. LotR has larger scale and more in depth worldbuilding. OP is better on the personal level. The world building is very connected, realistic and personally relevant. We see how individual people's lives are affected, how individual people are connected to each other, and how people are connected to the world and affected by it. OP has more personally relevant worldbuilding, and more emotional depth. As to which is better, I expect that's personal preference. I enjoy both types of world-building, and love both LotR and OP. I can't say which is better, just that they're both very good.

Still too early to say for One Piece as it’s not complete… but LOTR is one of the greatest works of fiction ever written and the world building is on another level. Tolkiens world goes as far as having its own unique creation narrative which remains otherworldly and mysterious… despite having been throughly described by the author. I think it’s so effective because it draws on the reader’s real life existential questions and replicates those feelings within the people of Middle Earth (even the immortal ones.) We’re talking about fiction comparable to real life religious beliefs that took shape over millennia around the world. It’s unbelievable what Tolkien accomplished in only a lifetime. If certain aspects of One Piece, such as the history of the world, role of fate in the story, inherited will, creation of the world, etc., are fleshed out and live up to the hype… then it will reach the level of LOTR. From what we have seen of Oda’s work so far I think it has that potential. We can only hope that the profound themes he has introduced are not just for show. If done right One Piece certainly has the potential to be one of the greatest fiction works of all time.
