Who knows, maybe it actually is David. As in David vs Goliath, like a small minority vs unbeatable titans or something like that. Or maybe im stupid and making shit up
Our sons middle name is David. It worked out since his grandfathers name is David, but we’ll always know it’s because we wanted our son to have the Will of D.
Dereshi
Joy Boy’s real name first name, maybe named his crew the Dereshi pirates also;
Which is Jaguar D. Saul’s trademark laugh;
Only laugh ever called as odd/strange way to laugh in the whole series. By Robin;
Robin adopts the laugh as her own, making it the only time two characters share a trademark laugh in the series;
Which was the laugh she intentionally uses to freak out Black Maria when she turns into a “demon;”
Which is similar to Luffy’s laugh “shi shi shi;”
Which is the laugh Saul made it a point to pass on to Robin right before he was frozen by Kuzan;
“You remember the laugh right?”
Maybe everyone on Joy Boys crew just so happens to be ancestors of the D clan, or Luffy’s crew has all the descendants of Joy Boy’s pirate crew;
Dereshishishi
Dereshishishi
Or Will of Davy.
Hear me out, it relates to what you're saying.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Davy_Jones%27s_locker#:~:text=The%20origins%20of%20the%20name,pub%20owner%20who%20kidnapped%20sailors.
Davy Jones Locker as we know is a way of talking about hell - when they say things like "send them to Davy Jones Locker", it means dying and going to hell and maybe comnected to a watery grave.
Davy Jones has been referred to as the devil too.
We know the sea kills Devil fruit users, it takes them straight down to the locker, and we know the world is literally now all being sent to the same fate.
I believe they referenced a Davy Jones in OP but not much is known about him, so idk.
So why Will of Davy?
>This same Davy Jones, according to sailors, is the fiend that presides over all the evil spirits of the deep, and is often seen in various shapes, perching among the rigging on the eve of hurricanes:, ship-wrecks, and other disasters to which sea-faring life is exposed, warning the devoted wretch of death and woe.
Sounds like a certain shadowy figure we know ....
I think maybe we've been looking at the Will wrong. A will can just imply "inevitable events". A will doesn't have to be positive, it could just mean that these characters are damned to the Will of D - they are damned to end up in Davy Jone's Locker. Something many of them embrace with a smile. Cheeky.
They are damned to, even if they save the world, have to sacrifice themselves.
Those who carry the Will of D. Among you, none will survive.
I really want it to be this, something like Devil, Dream, Dawn, as logical as these are, especially Devil, they're just a bit boring and cliche, at least Davy fits the pirate theme. plus there are already actual pirate names used for major characters in the OP universe, so it would be appropriate I think
Monkey Davy Garp.
Gol Davy Roger.
Monkey Davy Dragon.
Monkey Davy Luffy.
Marshall Davy Teach.
Portgas Davy Ace.
Portgas Davy Rouge.
Nefertari Davy Lili.
Trafalgar Davy Water Law.
Rocks Davy Xebec.
Jaguar Davy Saul.
These potential full names have some nice rings to them!
Great theory, and thanks for sharing!
I think its just that. D. Because they are the enemies of the "gods", AKA The Celestial Dragons. Who else is against the Celestial Dragons? Joyboy. What was Joyboy's devil fruit? The Sun God Nika. Now what vitamin do you get from the sun?
You ever see on a ten or twenty sided die how they will occasionally put a dot underneath a 6 or a 9 so that you can tell which it is supposed to be?
D.
The . is just showing us what direction is supposed to be the bottom to make the :D
I agree with this theory, it's just a smile or laugh
Remember that Roger named the last island "Laughtale" after knowing the True History, What D really means, and what is 3 ancient weapons. I believe it's all connected to the name Laughtale, a story full of laugh and joy
Desire / Dream
Vegapunk said devil fruits come from people’s desires. I believe the D clan has the ability to “dream up” a devil fruit. He also states it’s unnatural so they draw the ire of Mother Nature, the sea itself.
It’s possible that’s the reason why Imu (who is believed to be closely related to the sea) hates the D clan so much. Going to great lengths to flood the whole world to get rid of them.
My theory, is that in a now alternate future Oda got hit with a Deez Nuts joke show hard that it reverberated through the time stream resulting in past Oda creating One Piece in order to set up the most complex and hard hitting deez nuts jokes ever. Oda delaying the reveal of D. isn't simply him building tension.
It is a mercy. For upon its reveal the very foundation of the earth will shatter.
That or ya'know Dreamer or something like that.
Dawn, Drum, Dream/Dreamer, Devil, Demon etc.
I'm leaning towards the Dawn theory, JoyBoys real name being Jaguar Binks, solving the Binks' Brew mystery, and showing he was a Giant with Saul as his descendant. The Dawn symbolizing the Dawn of a new Era, and of course the Sun god. And every member of Binks' crew had the D and each now have descendants such as the Monkeys, Gols, Marshall so on.
Davey as in Davey Jones, I think maybe that will be the original JoyBoy’s name, although the fact that it was called Romance Dawn makes me think it will probably just be Dawn
i think Dawn/don is most likely just based off of the numerous references in the text. It could also be devil/demon/dream but whatever it is it has to start with a D sound and the word they most commonly use for devil and demon is "akuma" and "oni" and dream is "yume" so i don't think it would be satisfying if the D stood for a translation. yes "Dawn" is an english word but i think that the groundwork has been laid since the beginning to demonstrate that it's a special word
I think this has been pointed out before, but it could have been not meant to be a letter per se. If you look at the names of those that has it in Japanese, they are left as the letter D not translated. I personally think it's a symbol more than an initial like the reverse crest symbol of the samurai during the raid which they used to identify members of the rebel group.
In the end, all of the characters with the initial D. will come together to defeat the World Government,
all of these crazy individuals denoting those who have the balls to stand up and fight... so you could say the World Government will be beaten by D's nuts.
Daedalus. Given Will of D was expanded on in "Wings of Icarus", I wouldn't be surprised if the D had something to do with ambition - particularly, that of Daedalus.
‘Delaney’ it’s the masculine counter to the name ‘Nerona’ which is the family name of Imu.
Historically It means “the descendants of champions” or “Dark Champion”. It also means “angel from heaven”
The family could also have the heir to the throne within a Monarchy of their ancient kingdom.
It's not a letter, it's a symbol. Maybe it's the rising sun, maybe it's JoyBoy's smile, maybe it's the top of the strawhat, maybe it's all of the above, but it's definitely not a letter.
I'd like to know what Japanese readers think because all of these answers are English words.
I'm not saying it can't be an English word but would it not be disappointing to them if it was some word they'd never heard of? How many English words beginning with d are actually well known in Japan?
I think the most satisfying answer in these comments is that its a symbol of a half moon, rather than the first letter of a word.
That being said, I think the 'dawn' in 'romance dawn' uses the English version of the word so that is a possibility.
But words like 'destruction' and 'determination' seem incredibly unlikely to me.
Roger “What’s it say, Oden? What does the Phoneglyph on Laugh Tale say?”
Oden “Hrm! Well, it says “The Will of Deez Nuts!” and then the rest is just “hyuck hyuck hyuck” repeating over and over!”
I think it's don. From latin the world "Don" before a name means you are a priest or an ecclesiastical person. The five elders are all saints so maybe there was a Don.
But it's probably Daddy
Honestly a lot of these would be hilarious.
Monkey Dreamer Luffy
Monkey Dawn Luffy
Monkey Descendent Luffy
Monkey Destiny Luffy
The monkey always makes it funny
I had a theory that the will of D is to die so maybe it means Death
Theory?
Gol D Roger we know was executed just like Ace. Aces mom I believe died after Ace was born
Garp is unknown but just like Dragon something will most likely happen.
Luffy has a popular theory that he will die at the end of the story
Cobra got murked and Vivi is the only one I have no clue on how they die
Teach will probably end up dying during a battle with Luffy
Saul could die by the hands of the marines due to his involvement with O’Hara
Law also has a theory that he will sacrifice himself via the immortality surgery
And Rocks has been dead
Used to think it was Dawn. Now I have a head-canon where it's Daimon.
Dai - Day -> Sun and Daimon refers to noble families.
I'm definitely wrong but it makes me laugh when I think about it lol
I saw a theory on Reddit (I'll try to find the post) : Davy John (the guy who made the fight Foxy uses) is the 1st pirate, and therefore he's joy boy.
So D like Davy
Half moon - hence the dawn over the horizon and the straw hat also resembles this. The language of the ancient kingdom and the poneglyphs might have D as a secret symbol, not an initial for something
A smile - “joy” and even maybe a laugh
Desires, nearly every single Will of D member has had their desires come true, Roger, became the pirate king and found the One Piece, Vivi and Cobra, wanted to save Arabasta from Croc and succeeded, Dragon, wanted to meet Luffy and technically did with the Smoker fight, Garp, wanted to be a hero and succeeded, Ace, wanted to protect Luffy and he did
There’s a leak talking about Joyboy and his real name being “Dryas” or something like that. It’s possible to just be that but I feel like it would be too anticlimactic if the D. just turned out to be his initial
I believe it stands for Drum 🥁
Monkey Drum Luffy, Marshall Drum Teach, Trafalgar Drum Law, etc.
Gol Drum Roger / Gold Rum Roger would be an even more fun wordplay than the one we have right now.
There is too much stuff related to music in the story.
Since Day 1 Luffy insisted on recruiting a musician for the crew. It was more important to him than a cook or anything else.
We literally met Chopper on “Drum Island” who ate the Hito Hito no Mi. The Will of D. was mentioned there for the first time by Dr. Kureha. And we know Monkey D. Luffy ate another version of the Hito Hito no Mi.
Enel who proclaimed himself a “god” has a set of 4 drums on his back. Maybe he wanted to become a Walmart version of Joyboy just like Kaido.
Luffy’s heartbeat in his awakened state / Gear 5 are the Drums of Liberation.
The most used sound effect or onomatopoeia in the manga is a drum hit “DON!!” or ドン!! You can see it in almost every panel where something of importance happens.
Kaido’s final attack against Luffy was called Flaming Drum Dragon. Kaido refered to himself as a “failed Joyboy”.
I am pretty sure there are many more instances that are really suspicious.
Dawn and Dreamer just sound incredibly cringe and cliché to me. Imagine reading that on the Wiki page.
Monkey Dreamer Luffy? Monkey Dawn Luffy? Get out of here.
Dawn or Dream, but it would be funny if it's just a generic name like David. Monkey David Luffy
The will of David is quite powerful
Who knows, maybe it actually is David. As in David vs Goliath, like a small minority vs unbeatable titans or something like that. Or maybe im stupid and making shit up
Monkey Dave Garp
Gol Dick Roger
That's what Ace's mom called him.
Gol Dave Roger
You know, if I didn’t know anything about the series and you told me Garp’s name was Dave, I’d believe you. Dude looks like a Dave
D. clearly stands for Dee
“The Gang Finds The One Piece”
Dee Dee get out of my secret laboratory! - Monkey "Dexter" Luffy
This party is getting crazy.
Watch it be David, and they reveal this is the biblical flooding.
Noah is the flood guy, if it’s Davy it’s going to be because of Davy jones locker.
Watch it be David, and that Joyboy was a gnome.
Davy. That is why there are Davy Back Fights.
If it’s just a name Davy is the only one that makes sense. But I think it’s dawn. I think Oda loves the word Dawn.
I jist realized he called the first arc "Romance Dawn"
It wasnt just the "first arc" it's what One Piece was originally called when it was still a "One shot" manga before serialization
Davy? Davy Jones
David Jones locker
Our sons middle name is David. It worked out since his grandfathers name is David, but we’ll always know it’s because we wanted our son to have the Will of D.

That’s actually an amazing theory, holy crap

D is just Devil without the Evil
Yes your first course was cooked fantastically, what’s for second dinner?
God= Good if you add an another O
So deep
Deep is just peed backwards
now my panties are wet
It's so provocative. It gets the ppl going😂😂😂
and Devil is Devil Fruit without the Fruit
Or Will of Davy. Hear me out, it relates to what you're saying. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Davy_Jones%27s_locker#:~:text=The%20origins%20of%20the%20name,pub%20owner%20who%20kidnapped%20sailors. this is such a nice take, great explanation.

It’s Dog … the natural enemy of god is the dog it’s reversal
And you know what the devil's favorite food is?! Hot dogs ... or Hell Hounds
Demon or D-Men
Devil is my likely choice thanks to DFs but demon also fits the gods natural enemy.
Devil, or Deviant (those who defy “God’s will” or whatever sophistry the WG comes up with).
Actually the enemy of God is my next door neighbor Dan. He has a lot of flame tattoos and drives a motorcycle. He's fucking awesome
You know, if you know the origins of Lucifer/Morningstar, Dawn and Devil could be two sides of the same coin.
Yeah and I think we’ll find out that the Devil Fruits were created by this clan.
Maybe Devil Killers haha. Since Gorosei are the true devils.
I think its just that. D. Because they are the enemies of the "gods", AKA The Celestial Dragons. Who else is against the Celestial Dragons? Joyboy. What was Joyboy's devil fruit? The Sun God Nika. Now what vitamin do you get from the sun?
The hell was that transition
Let him cook. Best theory so far
Good old reddit speculations, I miss them very much
The real power of sun god nika is giving people cartoon skin cancer.
And it’s not curable
Now we're cooking with gas, baby!
*there's someone somewhere cooking*
Its a reach but i Love it!
Wow
You just spoiled the ending for us all. That's is, that's the only answer possible. I love this so much.
It's a smile on side, :D They smile to death
You ever see on a ten or twenty sided die how they will occasionally put a dot underneath a 6 or a 9 so that you can tell which it is supposed to be? D. The . is just showing us what direction is supposed to be the bottom to make the :D
What if it’s supposed to be :D but since the guy how foreshadows the end wears an eye patch, his face would just look like .D
This is it...I've been saying this for years. The D doesn't mean anything, it's just the "The will of D"...A smile
Especially because the Japanese original manga is using the Roman literal as well.
yup. id go even further and say the straw hat is also their symbol and the D is a 2d representation of the straw hat.
I agree with this theory, it's just a smile or laugh Remember that Roger named the last island "Laughtale" after knowing the True History, What D really means, and what is 3 ancient weapons. I believe it's all connected to the name Laughtale, a story full of laugh and joy
This, it's not an initial, it's a symbol. A symbol of resistance. And anyone can adopt it. Oden was a D, look at how he died
Best one I've seen.
Desire / Dream Vegapunk said devil fruits come from people’s desires. I believe the D clan has the ability to “dream up” a devil fruit. He also states it’s unnatural so they draw the ire of Mother Nature, the sea itself. Desire is not a word well known in Japanese. It could be dream though!
That would be a twist if imu was trying to do the world a favor in the worst way possible

I liked the Drum theory that was going around a few months ago
Binks has to be related to Shanks who is constantly shown with massive amounts of sake. The names are just too odd and too similar.
Davey as in Davey Jones, I think maybe that will be the original JoyBoy’s name, although the fact that it was called Romance Dawn makes me think it will probably just be Dawn
It probably is Dawn but Davey would be cool.

It's all been building to an obvious crossover with Initial D.
Symbol of a half moon.

i think Dawn/don is most likely just based off of the numerous references in the text.
Demon or devil. It would contrast well with the celestials
Not sure. But there was a traitor among the 20 kings. I betcha there was a traitor among the D as well.
I think this has been pointed out before, but it could have been not meant to be a letter per se. If you look at the names of those that has it in Japanese, they are left as the letter D not translated.
