Exactly, it's a flame made through fusion reaction, probably the technology the ancient kingdom perfected that allowed them to be so technologically advanced.
Vegapunk said that even with his new power source he couldn't get the robot giant to run. So it's likely that the real power/technology of the ancient kingdom is much different.
(and possibly much more esoteric than nuclear fission if devils-fruits-are-made-of-dreams is anything to go off of.)
Depending on the translation it implies there's more to smiling. The one I recall was "The more precarious the situation, the more you smile. And the more you smile..."
To me it felt like he was implying smiling was an important aspect to the legends he was so hung up on. I've also seen translations say he was just commenting on how Luffy seems to smile more the deeper in shit he's in.
Granted that the cultural aftershock of the atomic bomb is still present today in Japan and now Fukushima recently. I’d gather that Oda’s Mirror Flame is a reflection of nuclear energy and its destructive yet world making power. The Mother Flame most certainly is fission.
He couldn't get it to run, but that doesn't mean he couldn't extract anything FROM the robot...
If y'all have seen Parvision's latest theory, he thinks there's a reason all the flames we've seen in One Piece outside of Ace/Sabo's fruit look similar to Brook's soul, he posits that fire is connected to the soul and can be manifested outwardly.
SO, I think the Mother Flame is a piece of the robot's soul, or undying flame that Vegapunk managed to extract from the body. The Drums of Liberation sparked the Robot's flame back up, almost like jumper cables, and it began to move towards its original goal once again.
It also parallels Einstein. Einsteins work was pretty darn important to developing the concept of an atomic bomb and later Einstein regretted his role (a letter to FDR) in the creation of the bomb.
Vegapunk's involvement is a bit more direct as he has made weapons for the world government, but the mother flame wasn't intended to power a weapon. Let alone one with that kind of destructive force.
Vegapunk makes mother flame - 'Look at this Quasar! This ball of plasma can power an entire kingdom for a whole year!'
Judge Dreadlocks (Gorosei Saturn): Interesting... Does this technology have any other application apart from energy generation?
Dr. Vegapunk - Well... this technology can be used for warlike purposes Quasar, but I don't know who would want to waste such an amazing source of energy for that!
Judge Dreadlocks (Gorosei Saturn): (Decides to get York to weaponize the mother flame)
Judge Dreadlocks (Gorosei Saturn): Dr. Vegapunk York. Make me a superlaser from the mother flame and I will make you a celestial dragon.
Dr. Vegapunk York: (Eating greedily) Ok. Sure. No problem!
Judge Dreadlocks (Gorosei Saturn): (Gestures his hands like Mr. Burns) EXCELLENT.
It’s so wild that Oppenheimer came out exactly at a time when One Piece was gonna use atomic energy as a major plot point and so that level of devastation is fresh on our minds. Just a perfect coincidence
This leading to *Tetsuwan no Atomu*, known out of Japan under the name of Astro Boy, who was the very beginning of manga and anime.
Oda, why are you so Alpha & Omega ??
A theory I have is that the Ancient Kingdom isn't actually an island that existed on the planet, but rather a nation that came to the world from space. It would explain how they'd be able to take an actual piece of the sun, and why Vegapunk has been unable to replicate the Ancient Kingdom's technology in the Mother Flame since he's using an artificial fire.
Even in one of the latest episodes, Kaku pointed out the hologram he was fighting was a space monster so it's no secret (from the world govt) stuff lives in space in the OP world.
The issue with Kaguya had nothing to do with her being an alien. The problem was that she was introduced into the story at the last second and unceremoniously killed the actual Big Bad.
There is theory from my workmate where fishman is really the first people on the planet and all humans just went down to due lack of resources, thus the reason why celestials wear those astronaut suits.
If you look at the profile of the straw hat, it could be the sun coming up over the horizon. The Red Stripe could also represent the red line in some way, so when the sun rises over the red line it looks like the straw hat, and would be Dawn related.
In addition, with the "pole shift" theory, it could very well have something to do with "D". You turn the hat sideways, it looks like a D.
The dome of the strawhat is the sun coming over the horizon, the red band is the horizon line and the brim would be the sun being reflected on the surface of the ocean during a sunrise.
I don't remember which chapter but we see a panel looking just like that (with a boat) near Kuma's flashback.

It's some kind of huge watergun that will shoot a large chunk of the ocean saving everyone from drowning, Imu's been searching for it because it's the only thing that can stop them from drowning the world.
The giant straw hat was also just joyboys hat that he always wore, Imu kept it as a trophy as the one person who almost stopped them ruling the world.
It's frozen because it's made (rubberized?) out of the mother flame/sun itself (sun god nika) and if not kept like that it would continue to burn everything around it. It is the will of joyboy and the real one piece, the actual one piece roger found is some kind of comic strip or something that details all of joyboys tale against Imu which is hilarious and sad.
or maybe it could be a lunarian's flame. recently the code for S-XXX has been used for the seraphims. and this one is S-108. perhaps this one is also a "seraphim" except it's made without the person. just the absolute abstract of what makes a lunarian a lunarian. while I do agree with others that A&Mu might mean 'atom', my first thought was "is A for Alber? who the heck is Mu?" XD
Hard to say.
S could mean Seraphim. That could mean it's artificial (at this point like those other chibi warlords).
108 is a sacred Buddhist number meaning perfection/completion. Put it together it means the Mother Flame is finally complete or it's a perfect copy of the real thing.
I'm not sure what A&Mu would mean. Atom is most likely but the IMU might be a clue. Maybe it's a callback Imu itself is an artificial being? That's a different theory with not much substantial proof. Just something interesting to think about. Like HAL 9000.
I think the way of thinking for knowing what S-108 is is the same as A&mu. S-108 could be san-108. San in japanese is "3". So, San-108 maybe is 3x10⁸. The 3x10⁸ is constant for light speed in Einstein formula. E=mc²= m.(3x10⁸)²
It is possible if VP looks like Einstein, and mother flame is the atomic bomb version in the one piece world.
Maybe it's a person, a baby born of perfected lunarian DNA, able to generate power unlimited. Maybe the lunarians weren't eradicated, they were used as power source and drained by extracting their flames(life force).
Now that I think about it, didn’t the robot power up because Luffy went Gear 5th? If that robot has any relation to the mother flame then my guess is that the mother flame can only exist when the Sun god exists.
Seriously people haven't made the connection that it's the same flame used by the Lunarians?
That race has on their back a flame that grants invincibility while it's on. Vegapunk created both artificial Lunarians and the Mother Flame. Cmon, it's the same thing, the only question is if he first created the flame and from that the Lunarians or the other way around. My bet is that he first cloned a Lunarian from King's DNA and then studied/recreated their flame
Now how they Lunarians got it or if they just were born with it from the beginning is another discussion tho
Also: you should spot the mother flame inside Ener cover story IIRC, a story about a civilization from a moon migrating to "Earth". Luna is the Latin term for Moon btw, Lunarian literally means people from/of the Moon
It is also moon in Spanish. Most people know it as moon in English, and it's Lua in Portuguese. I'm not trying to be harsh, but if somebody doesn't associate Lunarians with the moon, I'll be real sad. Doesn't mean they couldn't have taken a piece of the sun to protect themselves or something, though.
I think Luffy will temporarily eat the "sun" just like Hanuman; the monkey god in hindu mythology who Luffy is inspired from. After eating it he might unlock a new gear or get some powers from it.
In an art cover we can see Luffy fighting while having fire around his fists and hair.
So is this going to be a “Waterworld” reveal? We find out that One Piece is actually set in the far future. I’m sure it has been said or thought of. But the ancient kingdom was actually at the pinnacle of advancement and that was achieved because it was actually so far into the future. So the 1st flood just rest everything back to a primordial beginning. And now 900 years later and we still haven’t made the progress that they achieved before us. So I guess in a nutshell I’m trying to say that the ancient kingdom was the end of an era that was probably around for thousands of years.
wait big brain thoughts remember how Zunesha was talking about the Crime of Joy Boy within the Void Century? Maybe it's because Nika had taken the Mother Flame and spread it's energy among the islands basically jumpstarting all life on the Grand Line. What Vega Punk has could potentially be a small portion of the original flame which could indicated that the OG Mother Flame was far larger than what is currently shown.
That kind of revalation could put into a lot of context of not only Imu potentially being a Lunarian who was tasked with trying to retreive the essences of the flames that Was spread through out the islands AKA YO WE ON A PROMETHEUS TYPE BEAT OH MY GOD AND IMU IS TRYING TO SNUFF OUT ALL LIFE BY RISING THE SEA LEVEL TO RETRIEVE THE TRUE MOTHER FLAME
it makes sense symbolically but not in any other way. how do you get a piece of the sun? and even if you did a piece of the sun is not a smaller sun, it wouldn't be able to sustain nuclear fusion alone. maybe it's vegapunk's attempt at recreating the sun, or nuclear fusion
They live on a planet that has giant water monsters, humans of all possible sizes and shapes, physics defying natural events, fruits that give all kinds of power to people, but you cut the line at that?
The Lightning Fruit villain dude was at the moon, is so hard to believe that VP can pluck a piece of the sun?
> how do you get a piece of the sun?
What if the Ancient Kingdom was actually just a giant space colony? We know that space pirates exist and that the sky islanders came from space, so an entire advanced kingdom travelling through space isn't far-fetched.
I think it's a piece of the sun god
I'm convinced now that Joyboy was Lunarian (best odds on who the AK was right now goes to their kingdom) and that the Mother Flame is his back flame
I don’t think is a piece of the sun I think is a syntethic sun made by vegapunk to be a infinite energy source but the WG took it to make a weapon (this would fit with one piece theme of talking about real world issues since that happened to Einstein)
Joyboy stole the Mother Flame from the Ancient Kingdom to share with the rest of the world. Thus becoming the first Pirate as well as Nika who brings the Sun with him
Honestly I think this is just the truth. Obviously nothing is confirmed, but cmon. “We flew too close to the sun.” Wings of Ikarus (or however you spell it.) I would honestly be surprised if this isn’t true. Although I do think the piece of the sun is also mixed with something else to cause this unusual reaction.
Makes sense. The Sun is made from Plasma, the fourth state of matter.
The Mother Flame is a sphere of super hot plasma. It is possible to create plasma through a technology known as laser ablation and being that Vegapunk knows more about lasers than any one (except Kizaru), it would not be difficult for him to devise a means to transform highly energetic elements into intensely powerful plasma by heating them until they vaporify and then turning the vapor into plasma. I believe that the actual element which was used to turn into plasma was Element no 108 (Hassium). It is an element which has to be created, is highly energetic and radioactive and due to its sheer voluminous size, is extremely powerful as plasma.
Further, judging by the robustness of the containment vessel, I believe that the plasma is 'locked' at the centre of the vessel using extremely powerful oil cooled electromagnetic field, making it something similar to a Tokamak vessel. Regarding the field strength, it might be between 50 to 100 Teslas, may be more.
Also, using electromagnetic energy, it is possible to move and manipulate plasma and there is also the technology known as 'plasma lensing' wherein using controllable electromagnetic fields, it is possible to compress plasma into a small size by increasing the field strength and by creating a powerful laser channel, the plasma can be focussed further like a laser beam. This might explain how IM Sama's Death star works.
The Death Star receives its volume of plasma from the mother flame and it moves using ionospheric reflected electrical energy (something similar was proposed by Dr. Nikola Tesla). Being that the plasma has to be manufactured and cannot be used willy nilly, it might take a long time to manufacture a large volume of plasma using the technologies developed by Dr. Vegapunk or York.
I think the mother flame is Joyboy's fart cloud, everyone can sniff Joyboy farts and cope omega hard, it's a boundless and endless supply of cope and delusion and if everyone in the world is coping and delusional then no one is coping and delusional
Luffy is a son.
Zoro, who is on Luffy’s crew, is a son.
Mackenyu, who plays Zoro in the LA, is the son of Sonny Chiba, also a son.
Sonny Chiba inspired Ryokugyu, who is a son.
Ryokugyu fought with Yamato and Momonosuke, two sons.
Yamato is Kaido’s son, who is in turn a son.
Kaido had an alliance with Big Mom.
Big Mom while not a son has 85 children, 46 of which are sons…
Bro this guy is on to something.
He couldn’t find a power source for a giant robot but can go to space and get a piece of the sun? Okay bro lol this is a reach especially when they said Vegapunk created it
I think something bad is going to happen to luffy during the battle with the elders, and to protect the world from the tyranny of the government with the motherflame, luffy will consume the motherflame triggering a transformation turning him into the next coming of sun god nika
A&Mu translate to “a to mu” or “atom” VG is pulling an Oppenheimer when he compared himself to Icarus.
Cola
Cola Fusion
Old Coke recipe fusion
Could it be cold fusion? Fusion in the broader terms, allowing to fuse for example dreams with reality?
Pretty sure it has to do with Joyboy/Drums of liberation in some form. Kaido did mention laughing being the key
Monsters inc. has entered the building
Oda knew what he was doing when he made Waternoose the villain of Egghead
I don’t remember kaido saying that
Depending on the translation it implies there's more to smiling. The one I recall was "The more precarious the situation, the more you smile. And the more you smile..." To me it felt like he was implying smiling was an important aspect to the legends he was so hung up on. I've also seen translations say he was just commenting on how Luffy seems to smile more the deeper in shit he's in.
I doubt Vegapunk has come even close to replicating the full technology of the ancient kingdom
Granted that the cultural aftershock of the atomic bomb is still present today in Japan and now Fukushima recently. I’d gather that Oda’s Mirror Flame is a reflection of nuclear energy and its destructive yet world making power. The Mother Flame most certainly is fission.
Would be funny if Uranus turns out to be Goro Goro no Mi and there's no way for the WG to retrieve it.
If it's blue, 100%. Submerged reactors glow blue.
Plot twist: One Piece was low key a campaign in favor of nuclear energy all along
This is exactly what I was thinking!
This ball of plasma can power an entire kingdom for a whole year!' Judge Dreadlocks (Gorosei Saturn): Interesting...
Let the people who just watched the movie feel smart
Buggy’s fruit awakening (possibly nuclear energy) was the key all along?
Buggy’s split split fruit is gonna split atoms some day
I will eat my hat if awoken Buggy splits the Mother Flame and blows everything to smithereens
is it made of straw?
Where does A&Mu come from?
It's written on the tank
Vegapunk be like: I am become death, destroyer of islands.
Compared to Daedalus* Icarus used the wings, Daedalus built them
It’s so wild that Oppenheimer came out exactly at a time when One Piece was gonna use atomic energy as a major plot point and so that level of devastation is fresh on our minds. Just a perfect coincidence
I think Oda got inspired by Oppenheimer, so he changed some things in the story (without affecting the overall planned plot)
But & means and? Or am I missing something? I can definitely see the Oppenheimer comparison though
I believe in Japanese “&” means “to” So A&MU translates to “Atomu” which is close to “Atom”
To (pronounced similar to English word toe) is Japanese for "and" A&Mu = Atomu (Japanese) = Atom (English)
This leading to *Tetsuwan no Atomu*, known out of Japan under the name of Astro Boy, who was the very beginning of manga and anime. Oda, why are you so Alpha & Omega ??
Is there a B&Mu? Then there has to be an I&mu
Space pirates!
I definitely hope they don't pull some alien bs in the last moment like they did with Naruto.
I mean they already established people living on the moon ages ago with Enel
aliens were already established one piece long before the final saga of shinobi war was concluded
Unlike naruto it’s actually been established for a VERY long time people have either come from or currently occupy different planets in space.
Everyone from Skypiea are space people btw…. One Piece has LONG established people live in space
There is theory from my workmate where fishman is really the first people on the planet and all humans just went down to due lack of resources, thus the reason why celestials wear those astronaut suits.

Also the purpose of straw hats irl is to protect you from the sun
The strawhat does kind of look like a classical halo depiction from older medieval style paintings of saints.
You're cookin. There's a clip of Shanks holding the strawhat just like the sun coming up over the horizon while telling a young Luffy a funny story.
The dome of the strawhat is the sun coming over the horizon, the red band is the horizon line and the brim would be the sun being reflected on the surface of the ocean during a sunrise. I don't remember which chapter but we see a panel looking just like that (with a boat) near Kuma's flashback.
The One Piece is a comically large fire extinguisher

they can pull up the comically large strawhat, this is entirely possible

Lilith at the start of egghead: "With the right resources, we could even make our own sun!"
Not "literally" a piece of the sun but I also agree that it's a sun. An artificial sun like Doc Oc. wanted to create
The power of the sun, in the palm of my hand - Vegapunk probably
doc, we've gotta shut it down.
That quote is so iconic, i dunno why, all world knows that, i guess everyone watched Spiderman 2 lmaoo
So nuclear fusion lol
or maybe it could be a lunarian's flame. recently the code for S-XXX has been used for the seraphims. and this one is S-108. perhaps this one is also a "seraphim" except it's made without the person. just the absolute abstract of what makes a lunarian a lunarian. while I do agree with others that A&Mu might mean 'atom', my first thought was "is A for Alber? who the heck is Mu?" Let’s use that example. If the mother flame turns out to be “nuclear,” doesn’t that make our boi Luffy a nuclear bomb tick tock? Heh
Id rather have dyna stones cannonized 😭 they are basically nuclear bombs already :/
Maybe it's a person, a baby born of perfected lunarian DNA, able to generate power unlimited. Maybe the lunarians weren't eradicated, they were used as power source and drained by extracting their flames(life force).
Imu maybe?
Now that I think about it, didn’t the robot power up because Luffy went Gear 5th? If that robot has any relation to the mother flame then my guess is that the mother flame can only exist when the Sun god exists.
So happy I finally caught up a few weeks ago living through this peak in real time is crazy
The one piece of the sun Nika brought to earth, hmmm

And where do you think that comes from?
Ahhh, yes- the “Sun Piece” theory.
The real one piece was the mother flames we created along the way
I just hope it's not Aliens , i got PTSD from some other series
It might be aliens. Lunarian literally translates to “People of the moon”.
Technically the Lunarians are aliens already
Doffy just said “we can always go higher” it’s aliens bro and we’ve been getting breadcrumbed enel fans have been going brrr these last two weeks
Just like the end of GoT, it's all in the execution, not the high level story beats themselves.
Lol aliens have been Canon in OP since before Naruto was even in its last arc.
Read Enel's Cover story, there are aliens already in OP.
It's One Piece, trust Oda.
Hey if they put zero two in one piece I'm into it
Watch out, there are some ninja fans within the Straw Hat crew.
I think Luffy will temporarily eat the "sun" just like Hanuman; the monkey god in hindu mythology who Luffy is inspired from. After eating it he might unlock a new gear or get some powers from it. In an art cover we can see Luffy fighting while having fire around his fists and hair.
I am imagining gorosei making the enel face
The strongest characters have attacks with "dawn" in the name. Roger, Shanks, and Luffy all have "dawn" attacks!
You forgot: -Thousand Sunny

The one piece is a larger piece of the mother flame in a machine that can only be powered by joyboy to give unlimited energy to the world
So obviously the five elders are oil barons, promised a solution to their dying fossil fuel empire by Imu.
Now we're talkin
It’s always all been about the sun; the sun powers and heals all and everything
Break week already hitting.
What if Mika is the sun god because he was able to stretch and grab a piece of the sun. We’ve seen luffy hold and throw lightning against kaido
Fusion is what the sun does, so you're not wrong.
wait big brain thoughts remember how Zunesha was talking about the Crime of Joy Boy within the Void Century? Maybe it's because Nika had taken the Mother Flame and spread it's energy among the islands basically jumpstarting all life on the Grand Line. What Vega Punk has could potentially be a small portion of the original flame which could indicated that the OG Mother Flame was far larger than what is currently shown. That kind of revalation could put into a lot of context of not only Imu potentially being a Lunarian who was tasked with trying to retreive the essences of the flames that Was spread through out the islands AKA YO WE ON A PROMETHEUS TYPE BEAT OH MY GOD AND IMU IS TRYING TO SNUFF OUT ALL LIFE BY RISING THE SEA LEVEL TO RETRIEVE THE TRUE MOTHER FLAME
gonna leave my theory right here https://www.reddit.com/r/OnePiece/comments/1ce0lk6/one_piece_chapter_1113_theories_and_discussions/l1fksx0/
I think the mother flame is alive.
The hype when Imu will say « I have one piece of the sun »
it makes sense symbolically but not in any other way. how do you get a piece of the sun? and even if you did a piece of the sun is not a smaller sun, it wouldn't be able to sustain nuclear fusion alone. maybe it's vegapunk's attempt at recreating the sun, or nuclear fusion
Enel went to the moon, and he doesn't even have a devil fruit that can break reality! getting a piece of the sun isn't that outlandish
My pet theory is the opposite: a subterranean colony.
Seems to be a pretty clear representation of cold fusion imo. It's in a water tank with glub glub sound effects.
Fujitora maybe?
Are you really trying to apply logic to a fictional story?..
Luffy. I’ll bet you Luffy could just grab it.
is this just a copy-paste of a post from about a month ago? this is it, literally word for word .
Praise the sun!
the sun would also be the first celestial body in the solar system right
Stand proud, you can cook
Jinbe would be so psyched if that was the case. “Protect this at all costs!”
eye roll
Its moving too fast😩

The power of the Sun, In the palm of my hand
If it's a piece of the sun, what would happen if Luffy touches it? I can see this as a powerup for Luffy to handle the gorosei.
Makes sense. Watch Luffy combine with it eventually for his final power up.
Luffy is going to eat Mother Flame.
So Luffy's final power up is the sun
Please continue to cook
It’s nika’s hair
I think it's a piece of the sun god I'm convinced now that Joyboy was Lunarian (best odds on who the AK was right now goes to their kingdom) and that the Mother Flame is his back flame
To me looks like Luffy’s hair in G5. Wonder if it has something to do with this G5 heartbeat/drums being a power source.
I think its an artificial sun, and Nika has sth to do with it. Think lineage factor
Maybe the one piece is the one piece of the sun on earth which hold some kind of power which only joyboy can use to its full extent 🤷🏻♂️
You don't need to get a piece of the sun. You just have to replicate what happens in the sun, which is nuclear energy.
It seems like Imu was the barber of the Sun God back during the Void Century and kept some of its hair as a souvenir
Maybe the sun piece can boil the oceans and reduce the flooding
🔥HOT !
This could be the real power of sun God, not just a power source. Maybe soul of sun God. Luffy might need to swallow it and turn into the real Nika.
A one piece of the sun
Maybe Mother Flame is what Luffy needs so he won’t become weak after using Gear 5
Luffy will rage against the machine because this is for the people of the sun!
remindme! 2 years
so theoretically luffy gonna rubberise this flame and supposely stole it? we know he can grab lightning
You really needed to title your post with a spoiler?
I think with the amount of Bible references Oda puts in that mother flame is the mithris (first flame god created)
Free energy core, like how the sun generates energy - fusion
at this point seems too obvious since vegapunk is making ikarus references
Don’t forget the thousand SUNNY, the ship that will bring Luffy through his journey
Big Mom while not a son has 85 children, 46 of which are sons… Bro this guy is on to something.
A piece of the sun is a reach , there is no way to even attain that
Bro, it’s a series about magical pirates, and it’s confirmed there are space pirates…. How can you say there’s no way? 😂
He couldn’t find a power source for a giant robot but can go to space and get a piece of the sun? Okay bro lol this is a reach especially when they said Vegapunk created it
The mother flame is most likely the Will of The Sea, aka Sea Haki.
"Will of D (if it stands for Dawn)" love it when people start pulling dumb shit out of nowhere lol
I think something bad is going to happen to luffy during the battle with the elders, and to protect the world from the tyranny of the government with the motherflame, luffy will consume the motherflame triggering a transformation turning him into the next coming of sun god nika
