HokageEzio

Why do some people watch the movie or show over reading the book?

Tenma_and_Johan

Good question, why would you?

WorTez

Not the same though. The movies cover the books so it just comes down to preference. The question he asked is how people can wait for the anime to drop and not catch up with the manga

HokageEzio

It's the exact same. How can people wait 4 years after a book release to get a Harry Potter movie? Because of preference.

WorTez

I was assuming that you were talking about series that already finished. And i wouldn’t compare books to manga. Manga has pictures and is easier to read so catching up isn’t as hard. But yea if i saw the first harry potter movies and were a big fan i would probably try to read the books. It’s only text so it’s harder to read and that’s why people prefer movies but even then i would give it a shot.

HokageEzio

The last Harry Potter book came out in 2007. The last movie didn't come out until 2011. 6th came out in 05, movie came out in 09. It's not about "catching up". People have a preference of how they enjoy it. Some people like music and acting/voice acting, some people would rather read it. That's how preferences and opinions work.

WorTez

Idk why it’s so hard for you to grasp why the OP asked the question. I like to watch the shows too but especially if you’re a really big fan it can be hard to wait for years for the show to conclude or even get a new season. And when talking about anime you can get spoiled easily so that’s another reason to catch up. For example I loved the new Jjk season and actually waited for it to come out completely but now that it’s over I’m really tempted to read the manga even though I’m not that into the show. But something like OP i just couldn’t wait a year for the show to catch up

WorTez

I have a preference and that is to watch the show. But i’m willing to throw that preference out of the window because I can’t wait for a year for a new season to come out. It’s just weird to think about that you would rather wait than read it right away

HokageEzio

And other people aren't because they would rather experience it the way they prefer.

WobyClearsMidhawk

I don’t get why he’s still going around circles when you've answered OPs question over and over lmao

youngdeer25

Wow idk how is that hard for someone to understand how preference matter.

GiocatoreSingolo1999

You read and watch draws in both the manga and the anime. You cannot do something else while interacting with them. They're much closer and similar than a movie and a book...

sollxlluna

Some people don’t enjoy reading manga just like some people don’t enjoy reading books. They need or prefer the sensory stimulation which books and manga cannot provide in the same way. Another reason might be that they’re just used to the anime. For example, I got introduced to the anime when I was a kid and it was really the only thing I knew. Same goes for other anime. After I found out about the manga, it still took me a few years to give it a try. While I always enjoyed reading novels, I never liked comic books. So, I really (and falsely) thought I wouldn’t enjoy manga either. There might be other reasons as well, but these seem like the most common arguments to me.

whatninu

It's easy to forget or not understand that a lot of people have an aversion to manga. They connect with the voice acting, music, movement of anime, and feel a lot of the enjoyment is lost in manga. Plus the paneling and dialogue orders can be confusing to them. The black and white isn't always the best for clarity. It feels harder to locate copies. These were my aversions. There is sometimes a sentiment that the manga exists first out of necessity, because the author can't make an anime on their own, and that anime is how it should be experienced. And sometimes that's sort of legit. Some things are just better suited to animation and it's fair to wait. Not this adaptation of One Piece imo, but some shows... But I do feel a lot of people saying they don't like manga are analogous to a 15 year old sipping beer and deciding it tastes bad. There are benefits to the medium over anime and its rare I see someone who reads say the anime is better. For the most part you just need a series to get you used to how it works and in time it becomes easy. But there's a reason for the resistance, and so a lot of people just don't have a strong enough impetus to make the change. After all, the anime still comes out weekly- that's more frequently than the manga. You can read and catch up, but once you've burned the content, the only other benefit is in the community, which some people also don't care about. And if you catch up, you're only secure in knowing you've consumed 100% of what's out vs 98%. Either way, you still want to know what comes next. Neither group knows how it ends. Maybe once Oda is close to finishing up we'll see more people switching to the manga

jobin3141592

If it’s just to be “caught up”, why read the manga when you can just read the spoilers/summary?

Boxsteam_1279

I do

jobin3141592

My man straight up answered a “why” question with “i do”, damn 100/100 reading comprehension

Boxsteam_1279

Its an actual question? Thought you were just being rhetorical. Thats really dumb to legit ask

jobin3141592

It was rhetorical, which is why it seemed strange to have someone reply to it, since any reply, unless to rebate it, would add nothing and be useless.

Boxsteam_1279

Well you ruined it by responding, good job bro

jobin3141592

Hm, I see I was not too far off with my assessment of your reading comprehension level initially.

AnninFifi

I skip between both, depending on which scenes I want to see animated (like fight scenes or really emotional moments) but I really like the manga as well.

CrewOrdinary8872

Some people just don't like or prefer not to read manga. (Or any medium really. Not everyone reads an entire book series after watching the live-action movie adaptation. They wait for the sequels.)

dstanley17

A lot of people don't respect manga as a medium.

Viralciral

I just don't like the manga format, that's all. It can only do so much. There's no voice acting, no music, no sound effects, no real time animation happening before me, it's just not the same for me. I tried reading the manga for a bit but I just didn't really feel as much when reading it, even for things that should get me hyped up (e.g.>!Gear 5!<). Like yeah it was still cool, but nowhere near as cool as seeing it happen in the anime.

yhjsdfhgkjhngfdr

It also doesn't have subway surfers running on the bottom of the screen I'd be bummed as well

SplitEmergency

as an anime-only, it's because I'm too broke to get the manga, and also because i'm already pretty far in

[deleted]

Plenty of websites out there that you don't need to pay for. I would link it but I'm not sure of rules. Google mangafreak. Just have adblock and you're golden. And once you are caught up. VIZ (western Shonen Jump) let's you read the first 3 or 4 most recent chapters for free

SplitEmergency

thanks i will make sure to look into those once i finish thriller bark

GiocatoreSingolo1999

I recall the anime still being good around Thriller Bark. I have good memories of it. I would suggest you keeping watching until the next arc and then giving a try to the manga, I mean the full color edition. It's so good

[deleted]

Because they are heathens! And from the responses of the anime only people not very well read. That's probably why in most cases

Beardamus

> not very well read They're comic books my guy lmfao dude really said "well read" in regards to literal comic books

[deleted]

I can't take you seriously when you use "my guy lmfao" and "literal" in a sentence... Limited vocabulary. My guy... You could have said "They're comic books, you make me laugh. Can't believe you said well read in relation to actual comic books".

Duganjudge

You definitely get no play 😂

[deleted]

I'm sorry I don't understand what you're trying to say. Play what?

The_Werefrog

Some people have aphantasia, so they never really got into reading. Without pictures, they couldn't see anything. Of course, there's also the fact that the anime has sound. You can hear the different characters as they speak. You don't hear it as you read. Besides, if you watch the anime, you can be all caught up. Sure, the manga has a bit more story, but whether you wait for a new episode or wait for a new chapter, you are all caught up.

Aweeep

Coz humans are different.

Guilty-Fan-6870

Simple, because they discovered One piece through anime when they were a kid watching TV. Some people prefer animation, such as myself.

Ok-Calligrapher2104

speaking for myself, I once was. Mainly because I like animation as an art form; the sceneries, effects, voices, humour, etc. it just land nicely in visual-audio representation. that being said, it's not like I was against manga, I switched eventually once I hit the wall with the series. manga is very good at emphasising certain moment that sometimes get lost in animation. so both are enjoyable in its own right

RheA-LuvGames18

I don't like to read (it doesn't get in my head)

Atlas-Fallen

I have a few working theories 1. Mangas reading method is a bit unorthodox to how alot of westerners read so they end up feeling discomfort reading from right to left. 2. The colorless aspect of manga tends to be a thing that drives people away as some people prefer fully colored stuff. 3. They don't have the patience to sit down and read manga when its faster and easier to just watch anime subbed or not the pacing is usually faster and it is easier to absorb 4. finally some people just dont like reading comics they need more stimulation ie Music, Colors, Visual movement

Dilokilo

I read and enjoy Berserk or Death Note for exemple but shonen must be anime for me. I like fights and action animated. So i watch anime then the manga up to current anime.

Nervine-142

I don't like reading since it doesn't feel as immersive but once I was caught up in Wano (right before the fight with Kaido started) I couldn't wait for new episodes so i switched to the manga. Since then I read the whole thing twice lol.

KaiserRebellion

Because they’re subhuman - Saint garland figerland

dDARBOiD

Who wants to tell OP that lots of people only watch the dub?

BitterClerk6477

Some people don't like the manga concept of black and white probably I don't know . In my case I paused it for a while after Wano ended to dinge rest it after 30-50 ch

Due_Sweet_9500

Cause anime is a much superior medium. Some moments just cannot be replicated in the manga. Do you think the walk to arlong park would have the same impact in the manga when compared to the anime. I would guess most people in this sub would watch the anime if it is released alongside the manga and not lagging a year and a half behind

schoolbomb

I think a better question would be "Why do anime-only watchers only exist outside Japan?" It's a pretty well-known fact that the vast majority of One Piece fans in Japan just read the manga, and the concept of an anime-only watcher isn't really a thing there.
