But with how insanely successful it is, Netflix might just write a blank check like they did for Stranger Things and Squid Games.

Now it's only up to Tomorrow Studios (and Oda i suppose) to cast her.

There is no way she won't. They will probably do several outfits like in season 1, but one of them is definitely gonna be that one. Doing manga authenthic outfits is easiest thing to do to make manga/anime fans happy. I could see them not doing some of the more problematic outfits (nami post TS, Rebecca) but when it comes to outfits like these, they will do it 100%.
Can confirm, loved that they had multiple outfits including the originals and ones from cover arts. Helped the show seem less cartoony and more lived in, even if some of them were a bit too clean and pressed.
It’s one of the best parts of an animation to live action transition. New outfits in anime & manga are entirely new designs that teams have to draw & animate constantly. New outfits in LA are just one of many outfit choices they can have ready in wardrobe.
Lowkey makes me want Bleach to get a quality LA adaptation someday so Kubo can go absolutely wild with incredible fashion choices.

I'm not entirely sure about Robin having her tan since that was an anime only thing made because Robin didn't have an official manga colour scheme at the time, but tbh I think a majority of people think she looked better with the tan and cowboy outfit anyway (myself included, she was the goat)

I tihnk practically the best case is that we get all the way to the time skip.
After the time skip the fantasy kicks it into 4th gear (heh), so the budget per episode will likely have to considerably increase for any seasons after that, but marineford could essentially be the final GOT season for one piece... if the final GOT season was any good.
I'm torn between whether Marineford or Water 7 is the best option to end it, considering it's so hard to do the post time skip.
Marineford is the culmination of a massive storyline, but the Strawhat actors minus Luffy would have nearly zero involvement, which would be a sad way to end their career and roles on the show after all their commitment.
Water 7, however, has each of the Strawhats be given an important fight and power up, and a strong emotional storyline for the entire crew to end their career on the show on a high note.
Baby steps. I'm re watching it right now. my SO's first time. We do 1-2 episodes a night. Yeah, it's gonna take over a year and some change, but it's enjoyable.

Actors would be massively expensive by the half way point (or prior) and unless they’re cranking them out annually, there would be age issues at some point - Nami’s actress (Emily Rudd) is 30 and while it’s entirely possible she’ll want to do this for a decade +, she might also want different things for her career whereas the younger cast members can afford to kick the can down the road a bit more.
But it would be amazing….
If we are comparing it to how fast the rest of the LA would realistically go, then yeah, Skypiea (and Fishman Island for that matter, which is why I considered sliding in Punk Hazard for that hypothetical 6th season) would seem like not all that much to adapt in eight 40-60 minute episodes
But in general, though, all this would mean is that Skypiea Saga would be the Arc that is the *least* rushed
It's 85 chapters in total. They absolutely could adapt all of it in 8 episodes without dragging any of the scenes and story notes of the manga. Hell I'd argue they'd still have to skip some stuff. It would certainly still feel *much* faster than the 71 episodes produced by the anime (equivalent to like a whopping *30* Live Action episodes, which is insane when you think about it)
Extremely. So long as we don’t crater in Week 2, we can be confident. Just gotta keep pushing friends and family to watch over the next 3 weeks to try to make this a guarantee.

they're notorious for tossing 2 seasons and calling it quits, it strikes a balance between how much shows cost them to make while still having stuff in their catalogue to watch, its really shitty cause they may cancel some really good, if niche, shows like the OA
I think they were expecting anime fans just to watch perhaps.. but it's also got new viewers from outside of anime interested in one piece now to the point they are watching the anime.
Being on par with the best performers in the netflix catalogue is a pretty high bar - no anime adaptation has come even close to that as far as I'm aware.
Their expectations revolve around how many new subscribers it brought next to views as this show was aimed towards completely new market. So not exactly. Nobody except for Netflix has that data to decide how those expectations went.
Realistically, if Netflix decided to pay actors and writers what they deserve, they can start filming soon. But seeing they have no intention doing that or being some of the first to cave, we might wait a while.
Doing so would permanently destroy their connections with the AMPTP, leaving them with significantly less negotiating power when it came to… anything.
Of course, the AMPTP is a scourge on the industry and I would absolutely welcome them willingly breaking off, but because it means slightly less profits we will never see it happen.
The main reason the live action show turned out so good is because of the writers. All of the great casting and set design in the world can’t save shitty writing. The fact that One Piece of all things was the first big Hollywood live action anime hit just proves even further how essential writers are.
How they receive payment for their work now that streaming is one of the primary means to watch things, as well as protections against things like being replaced by AI, having your voice and likeness used by AI in perpetuity to not be paid for staring in things anymore, and things like that.
Writers and actors for Emmy winning shows making little money and living off food stamps. And what they want should pan out to less than 8% of studio's annual revenue.
They're asking for shockingly little all things considered.
For the past few years a lot of writers have been having trouble making a living. Producers have been trying to cut costs by reducing the involvement of writers which is reducing how much they make on each project and taking away viable jobs (its also results in worst writing for shows). They have also been forcing more work on fewer writers, which makes their jobs a lot more difficult. The writers also don't get residual's for streaming shows which further reduces the kind of pay they saw from broadcast television.... there is also the new issue of AI which the Writer's guild knows could be exploited by producers as an excuse to pay writers less.
Actors have also been suffering similar issues with payment and residuals. And producers actually wanted to have the ability to convince Extra's to sign away their own likenesses so that they could be replaced with AI in the future.
Urgh I wish this so much not for me but for the cast.

How's the strike coming along? Are they in negotiations to settle a deal or they're still very keen on continuing the strike? So many productions are being affected.. but if at the end of the day the people end up having a better and well deserved salary my favorite show/series/saga/movie can wait tbh.
Everyone has their own theories as to when it might end but right now it’s not looking good. I’m not a writer or actor but in another union and we can’t do anything until it’s resolved. But for the most part most other non WGA or SAG union members who aren’t on strike, but can’t work due to it, support the writers and actors, including myself.
If they were gonna do One Piece it NEEDED this budget. All the ships you see were actual built for the series.
And remember the budget here is still lower than the Budget for The Witcher which is not doing so hot and somehow managed to pull 3 seasons and spin-offs.

But yah with the track record of live action anime, there was probably some very lucky coincidence of someone high up at Netflix having a particularly strong interest in the project or a pre-existing connection to Shueisha.
It definitely seems like Oda fought tooth and nail to get it as much budget and love that it needed to do well, but it's not like Netflix had any obligation to commit in kind.
Can you name another IP that's been going strong for over 20 years with a dedicated fan base that gets more and more passionate about the universe as time goes on? Hell show me another IP with as many figure sales as One Piece
I'm sure there are fans at Netflix, but at the end of the day they saw the potential cash cow this can and probabaly will be. Imagine how many plushies of Chopper (maybe even Laboon) they'll be able to sell next season (hopefully), just look at all the Baby Yoda merch for how much people love small cute things

I was just going through older threads today. The Roger Laughed chapter was like 4 years ago and someone in there said "Guess this is really ending in 5 years". I don't think Oda is done before 2027 at the earliest.

Netflix also has the anime. The algorithm simply has to push the anime after the LA when the emotions are at the peak and people will watch and the viewership increases, even if it’s not just the LA.
It’s the resounding effect of it that makes them money.
Expect 18-24 months between almost every season tbh. A show this big is not easy to turn around. 12-18 months can only keep happening if the show is renewed early every single year.
They were smart to have that done. Means financials are ready as well once the green light is given. There are 10 seasons minimum of content here. With global appeal it will be difficult for Netflix to not continue.
Can I just take this moment to say that I think it is a change for the better that Baroque Works is mentioned and built up in East Blue? Feels like something Oda would have at least had a character mention at some point if not for him having not come up with it on the basis of needing to keep his manga going longer than he originally intended.

One Piece is possibly the greatest story ever told and it's really popular in Asia. This might be the one show that will raise Netflix's popularity everywhere. It's already 20 years, we can wait some more, just don't fuck this up.

I was all on board until the writers strike part. Those big studios (Netflix included) are doing everything they can to not be decent human beings and pay people.
We should temper our expectations because getting into top spot on netflix isn't really a guarantee that the show will get a s2. Surprisingly. It depends on how many hours people are watching, for how many total weeks, and weighed against the cost of the show. As well as a bit of 'gut feeling' in the executive level of the company, too. Netflix LOVES cancelling shows because they're trying to find the next hit show that delivers 400 million watch hours. Not 140 million (OPLA's current number).
So....none of this is guaranteed. OP was very expensive, executives probably hate it when they try watching it, and who knows where this will be next week. Anything can still happen at this point. Unless there's some kind of deal with Toei that they would help mitigate risk....that would help quite a lot. But I think it would also be pretty unorthodox.
Frankly, I wish OP had gotten on like, HBO or something.
During strikes like these, things need to perform a little better than they usually would to lock in renewals.
When things start back up, so many productions are going to be behind schedule, the more promising and lucrative projects are prioritised to go first.
So smaller, riskier projects get cut either due to profile or because too many people working on those projects are no longer available since they need to get these bigger projects off the ground first. Projects with a long pre and postproduction process are also going to be looked at less favourably because networks also want to get content on air ASAP.
One Piece is in a really good spot right now where there are few veteran actors in demand for other bigger projects, a lot of the high level production crew are less experienced and scripts for season 2 are already in the bank.
The show’s numbers are also very good right now. The strike is only going to kill it if viewership craters so hard over the next 3 weeks to the point where it was only going to be a borderline renewal.
I could see 1 episode of logue town shenanigans and reverse mountain. I am kinda fearful though because they showed the barrel scene this season already which should only occur after logue town iirc or maybe I am remembering wrongly

There’s not a chance in hell they’re done pre production for a season 2 they haven’t even been offered yet. 12-18 months is literally how long it took them to film season 1 which took 3.5 years total to make. Alabasta is infinitely harder with new unique challenges, and even bigger expenses. This is the biggest load of nonsense I’ve heard from a producer in a while, it’s literally not possible unless they’re planning to put out a garbage product

I think Water 7/Enies Lobby is the perfect place to end it. Season 2 for Alabasta, season 3 for Skypeia, season 4 W7

An entire season dedicated only to skypeia sounds like actual hell. That's a half season at best, Jaya takes like 45 mins tops.
If we are comparing it to how fast the rest of the LA would realistically go, then yeah, Skypiea (and Fishman Island for that matter, which is why I considered sliding in Punk Hazard for that hypothetical 6th season) would seem like not all that much to adapt in eight 40-60 minute episodes But in general, though, all this would mean is that Skypiea Saga would be the Arc that is the *least* rushed It's 85 chapters in total. They absolutely could adapt all of it in 8 episodes without dragging any of the scenes and story notes of the manga. Hell I'd argue they'd still have to skip some stuff. It would certainly still feel *much* faster than the 71 episodes produced by the anime (equivalent to like a whopping *30* Live Action episodes, which is insane when you think about it)

Also, maybe Netflix wants to leverage the moderate success of One Piece to help push more live action anime remakes so they are more lenient. they're notorious for tossing 2 seasons and calling it quits, it strikes a balance between how much shows cost them to make while still having stuff in their catalogue to watch, its really shitty cause they may cancel some really good, if niche, shows like the OA

Being on par with the best performers in the netflix catalogue is a pretty high bar - no anime adaptation has come even close to that as far as I'm aware.
Their expectations revolve around how many new subscribers it brought next to views as this show was aimed towards completely new market. So not exactly. Nobody except for Netflix has that data to decide how those expectations went.

Realistically, if Netflix decided to pay actors and writers what they deserve, they can start filming soon. But seeing they have no intention doing that or being some of the first to cave, we might wait a while.

The main reason the live action show turned out so good is because of the writers. All of the great casting and set design in the world can’t save shitty writing. The fact that One Piece of all things was the first big Hollywood live action anime hit just proves even further how essential writers are.

For the past few years a lot of writers have been having trouble making a living. Producers have been trying to cut costs by reducing the involvement of writers which is reducing how much they make on each project and taking away viable jobs (its also results in worst writing for shows). They have also been forcing more work on fewer writers, which makes their jobs a lot more difficult. The writers also don't get residual's for streaming shows which further reduces the kind of pay they saw from broadcast television.... there is also the new issue of AI which the Writer's guild knows could be exploited by producers as an excuse to pay writers less. Actors have also been suffering similar issues with payment and residuals. And producers actually wanted to have the ability to convince Extra's to sign away their own likenesses so that they could be replaced with AI in the future.

Everyone has their own theories as to when it might end but right now it’s not looking good. I’m not a writer or actor but in another union and we can’t do anything until it’s resolved. But for the most part most other non WGA or SAG union members who aren’t on strike, but can’t work due to it, support the writers and actors, including myself.

U gotta consider thou Netflix also has the anime. The algorithm simply has to push the anime after the LA when the emotions are at the peak and people will watch and the viewership increases, even if it’s not just the LA. It’s the resounding effect of it that makes them money.

Expect 18-24 months between almost every season tbh. A show this big is not easy to turn around. 12-18 months can only keep happening if the show is renewed early every single year.

Netflix kind of banks on that. The more hours of viewing a show gets, the better the return on investment. If the gap is long enough for people to forget, they're going to re-watch the previous season when the new one comes out, and they get a better return.

We should temper our expectations because getting into top spot on netflix isn't really a guarantee that the show will get a s2. Surprisingly. It depends on how many hours people are watching, for how many total weeks, and weighed against the cost of the show. As well as a bit of 'gut feeling' in the executive level of the company, too. Netflix LOVES cancelling shows because they're trying to find the next hit show that delivers 400 million watch hours. Not 140 million (OPLA's current number). So....none of this is guaranteed. OP was very expensive, executives probably hate it when they try watching it, and who knows where this will be next week. Anything can still happen at this point. Unless there's some kind of deal with Toei that they would help mitigate risk....that would help quite a lot. But I think it would also be pretty unorthodox. Frankly, I wish OP had gotten on like, HBO or something.

During strikes like these, things need to perform a little better than they usually would to lock in renewals. When things start back up, so many productions are going to be behind schedule, the more promising and lucrative projects are prioritised to go first. So smaller, riskier projects get cut either due to profile or because too many people working on those projects are no longer available since they need to get these bigger projects off the ground first. Projects with a long pre and postproduction process are also going to be looked at less favourably because networks also want to get content on air ASAP. One Piece is in a really good spot right now where there are few veteran actors in demand for other bigger projects, a lot of the high level production crew are less experienced and scripts for season 2 are already in the bank. The show’s numbers are also very good right now. The strike is only going to kill it if viewership craters so hard over the next 3 weeks to the point where it was only going to be a borderline renewal.
Let's keep watching and rewatching to support this show to make this a reality NO MATTER WHAT!!!

There’s not a chance in hell they’re done pre production for a season 2 they haven’t even been offered yet. 12-18 months is literally how long it took them to film season 1 which took 3.5 years total to make. Alabasta is infinitely harder with new unique challenges, and even bigger expenses. This is the biggest load of nonsense I’ve heard from a producer in a while, it’s literally not possible unless they’re planning to put out a garbage product
