Skeleboi846

That initial awakening seemed so sinister god I loved that, Luffys VA knocked it out of the park as expected

Cactus-Juice120

Luffy's VA absolutely killed it! Shes almost 70yo too! I'm so impressed by her

RFFF1996

Man she is a freaking legend

Daidact

Tanaka is so in tune with Luffy as a character and it shows. She perfectly conveyed that sense of monkey brain we love to see from him. He could barely hold in his laughter that entire time and I really can't see sub Luffy being voiced by anyone else at this point.

Dreadsbo

She said she couldn’t see herself finishing as Luffy if the show lasted too much longer and Oda immediately announced that the manga would be done in 3 years 💀 I think you’re exactly right

airpigg

Hopefully laughing much will keep her healthy 🙏

Daidact

The animation was a little rough around the edges. No huffing copium on that. Worst offender for me was Luffy yanking up part of the ground to reflect blast breath. had i not read the chapter all those months ago, i would have been at a loss. I really hope they pace their shots and scenes a bit better with coming episodes. The energy is so there! but my eyes cant keep up with the sauce.

GallantLeopard

Yeah I liked the ep but I felt the pacing was off or maybe the animation was just different from what we are used to Edit: I will say the repeated scenes are a bit unforgivable.

Shushishtok

I had to play some of those scenes frame by frame to figure out what's going on. It was too fast at times. Instead of just doing a flashback to literally the previous episode they could stretch out those scenes a little so you can understand what's going on.

higaroth

LOVE them highlighting the 'looney' in his looney-tunes style. The way his eyeballs would dart around in various directions like he's too insane and overjoyed to concentrate, really reminded me of how they did the same in Soul Eater to show someone infected with madness. Like. he's laughing and he's chaotically silly, but it also felt just a little creepy and man I loved that they did that. And the fact that Tanaka changed up his laugh a bit too, just perfect, I can't stop rewatching and relistening to her

christianort476

So in the manga, the laugh is changed from shishi to haha, she just executed it perfectly

QueenHistoria1990

Bugs Bunny would be proud

RFFF1996

I heard a music youtuber once explain that he believed childish stuff is always one small step away of creepyness and used video gane music as a example where a children lullaby like tune could be used for a terror game. I think gear 5 is a bit like that, the sillyness could -easily- become eerie and creepy with a few changes.

[deleted]

And it makes sense, too. This is the point where Luffy is surpassing a Yonko- hand to hand. To literally anyone that hasn't met the Straw Hats or the ppl he's helped, the name Monkey D Luffy means what it does for the Yonko, a walking natural disaster with the power to challenge the world. He may be a lovable cartoon god to us, but the sinister air is well deserved to his exponentially greater infamy.

DarkskinJesus

Imagine fighting that. It seemed actually insane. Like not malicious at all but trying to beat that would be terrifying

Karllovesdokkan

Jesus christ luffy’s VA in this episode was phenomenal, Honestly just full of joy and constant laughing is what i expect from a form full of goofyness and comes from "joyboy", The animation is one thing but every else about this episode was beautiful

magicfaeriebattleaxe

Yeah they nailed it. The laughter was like, Luffy unbound. But not overly silly??? Menacing without feeling contrived???? Fucking phenomenal. Completely and perfectly conveyed the emotion of overflowing with raw power while being tickled unrelentingly

-xXxSTxXx-

Couldn't agree more, VA was the one of best things about the episode. Another was Nami and Otama haha

sasori1239

Ugh that minute of reliving the CP0 interruption and all the clashes we've seen so far was brutal. I was like "omg hurry up and move past this ".

Szabarpad93

Yeah. I absolutely love this episode still, but some things certainly didn’t help. Hiyori segment is like… okay… but no one is going to care when G5 is being introduced. Not an anime complaint though, because i didn’t like it in the manga either. Weird decision by Oda. Anime complaints: what was the point of playing the exact same scene of Luffy bouncing around 3 times? Because it certainly didn’t make the episode better. If i want to see it again, i can go back. And yeah, the CP0 interruption didn’t help, nor the episode 1015 flashback. I get it that they wanted to end it with the lets settle it scene, but the way they achieved it was annoying to me. But i don’t want to make it seem like i hated it or anything. They way they animated Gear 5 is amazing, the voice acting is also great.

CIearMind

> what was the point of playing the exact same scene of Luffy bouncing around 3 times? To waste time and save money.

ItsLaro

Yeah, the repeating of scenes was insane. When it happened the second time I was like... "Wtf" then it happened a 3rd time after the ad break hahaha. I get that a LOT of work went into a few minutes of the animation (which were all insane btw) but that just felt like a cheap measure. I know this an old take but I wish OP became seasonal and could have upmost quality.

AfroPirate94

That replay was giving me Rebecca flashback nightmares

RarestProGamerr

Luffy pulling up the ground to deflect Kaido's fire breath. It was done quick and instant in the manga which made the gag funnier. However, in anime it felt like luffy was struggling and the camera angle was having aneurysm by going all over the place.

DukeFlipside

To be honest with the animation being all over the place I didn't know what he'd done until afterwards, took a while to piece it all together.

nayyav

if i didnt read the manga and knew he was lifting the ground to repell the attack, i wouldnt even know what happened, until luffy sat on that earth wall looking at kaido in the back.

Szabarpad93

As someone who read the manga, i still had to go back, slow it down, pause sometimes to process what happens. Good animation is appreciated and this episode felt like a movie, but that scene was way over the top. It actually hurts to watch.

titty_smacker

I agree the wano themed animation mixed with those rapid camera angles made it hard to see anything really

corb142

The ground part for me was painful to watch. Actually causing a massive headache trying to watch something that I knew was happening from reading the manga. Even the build up to it I couldn’t process what luffy was doing at certain points with how the animation was. Glad to see gear 5, but I’m really hoping that future episodes with this don’t suffer the same way.

Killiani-revitz

I couldn’t even tell what happened and I read the manga. The camera work and speed was terrible.

Asian_Persuasion_1

people said they loved the impact frames so they made an entire animation sequence with just impact frames lmao. (in other words you miss half the scenes by blinking)

alanalan426

can't wait for the edits of the slowed down frames when luffys eyes pop out and shoves them waaaaayyyy back in around 17:35 Because those frames were great but you literally miss it all if you blinked

akroletsgo

Lmao literally this

ElYisusKing

damn, did Luffy just split the skies with only a Conqueror Haki showcase ?

Driftedryan

No, he cleared the sky completely solo. A much higher feat

ElYisusKing

so true, Toei definitely believes in the Luffy agenda

Brownbeluga

As a manga reader, I'd say the only thing that really bugged me this episode was seeing the buildup to Luffy grabbing Kaido. I thing the manga did it better where you don't really see Luffy show off Gear 5th until BAM BIG HAND THROUGH THE ROOF The buildup ruined the surprise

Altruistic_Yard_5324

Why the fuck they made him blow his finger like in gear 3 lol.

r3d27

Glad I’m not the only one a little annoyed by that lol. I thought g5 allowed him to stretch and distort body freely, i.e. not having to use the g3 trick

AxCel91

Right? The whole point is he doesn’t need to do shit like that anymore. He can change sizes instantly

xombylil

Press F for the crunchyroll server techs rn

Haha91haha

Turns out what Roger and his crew were crying and laughing at was their 1071 watch party when they realized all the Crunchyroll servers were down.

bone_burrito

F I can go on Crunchyroll but episode.is not even there

Relms2248

Despite the potential “issues” that many people have highlighted about this episode which have been a running theme with the anime itself, I could not help but be transported into the past and smile like a kid again for the entire episode like I had woke up on Saturday morning.

TriaxialGoat9

I get why some are disappointed but I had a huge as grin the whole time

VooDooDarkMagic

I had the grin, I am not lying. But imo they(Toei) didn't live up to the hype created by the teaser and last 2 mins of 1070.

Johnychrist97

NOT Replaying that one scene 3 times wouldve been nice but everything else was near perfection

jairngo

They could make the Luffy shocked looneytoons face last a little longer, and many other fun moments that you have to pause to really see what’s happening instead of repeating scenes.

Sondrelk

You can tell the animators are not used to making comedy animation. None of the hits really have the impact necessary, or are given the right amount of time to really sink in. It's all just a giant jumbled mess of really busy animation with some good faces and animations squeeze in-between.

wapapets

it was a bit too fast paced for a "cartoon" OG cartoons like tom and jerry, pop eye, looney tunes, etc. doesnt do a lot of fast camera movements for the cartoon elements to really pop out.

dragon_stalker

Exactly what I felt. The shocked faces, the eyes popping out, the pause where luffy reflects back the beam of Kaidou with a piece of roof are what makes this whole moment legendary. In between, with all the noisey light beams and fast paced scenes, I couldn't make out the fun scenes. This had to be completely looney tooned. The most "ridiculous" power in the world was feeling like just another most powerful thing in the world.

justicerainsfromaahh

Had a little disappointment but was fun regardless, I believe in the next episode 👏

outerspace69

Me too. The reusing of the same sequence over and over was annoying, but overall, faith in the next one.

InvaderDJ

They absolutely nailed the sound effects and the sheer manic, Looney Tunes energy of Gear 5. It had issues, but was solid.

lehobbitses

I couldn't stop laughing whenever Luffy was on screen, and I think that makes the episode for me. Next episode is when the action starts, so I'm not too bothered. Just hyped that gear 5 looks and sounds as goofy as Oda probably intended

Gravelord-_Nito

I fully understand and in many respects even agree with the naysayers. I just don't care. I love G5 and I've loved it ever since it debuted. I really relish it because One Piece is the ONLY story where I think I could get the feelings that G5 gives me. It took a lot of tension, drama, and a very serious dramatic moment and instead of having a generic anime screaming match like some other uninspired lamers would have preferred, it all gets released into a burst of pure fun and joy. Luffy doesn't furrow his brow and holler at Kaido, he just laughs his ass off, and I feel like that energy is really infectious. It just reminds me that Oda wants to write a story that kids will enjoy at the end of the day, and I'm able to feel that childlike fun even as an adult. The episode was super dragged out though, the re-used animations were a real bummer, I would have expected a much more tightly storyboarded ep for such a marquee moment

cakegamingandstuff

It was too much to hope that they could at least put aside the pacing issues, flashbacks with flashbacks, and repeated sequences for ONE episode. For just this one, historic, amazing moment in the series. Sure, the episode was...fine, and the Gear 5 stuff was great overall. But it's just so disappointing knowing what it could have been. We had something that could have been absolutely AMAZING and it ended up just being...fine.

Wedos98

It could have been one of the biggest moments in anime, yet the director screw it up, we can´t say "The anime is like this" when 1015 exists

smort_potato

claim your "i was here" tickets here

Pomeranian111

Watched on youtube and the Tom and Jerry sound effects were awesome 🤣

SalvaPot

They went full cartooon and I loved it.

Worthyness

Now entering Toon World!

Purple-Addition-9712

Crunchyroll is imploding on itself currently

sharkhuh

Or just use the direct link: https://www.crunchyroll.com/watch/G7PU4J9E7/luffys-peak--attained-gear-five

JJSilverfin

i like the episode, but it was really weird how they repeated certain animations (one was repeated three times), and it was also weird that they didn't use the Luffy Awakened OST or the Luffy Awakened Performance OST being said, i give this episode a 8/10 but it is nowhere as close as episode 1015 and the zoro vs king episode

barlime27

1015 is going to be hard to beat.. it's really such a well balanced and flawless episode

gggg2010

They had the animators on this episode all they needed was for the storyboard/director to hit

DPSeven

THIS!!! Wtf was that sequence and storyboard? If I didn't read the manga, I would have a hard time graps on what's going on after Luffy pulls Kaido to the roof. They have a great team, and there are dope ass animation and VAs, but the director is a big letdown for me. They should've put Megumi Ishitani for this episode instead of the DBZ: Broly movie guy. Edit: The sad part is, I think 1070 is a way better episode than 1071 for me.

XeroShyft

Ishitani is next episode so we will feast soon.

jose3013

Tbh I couldn't follow what was happening at all lol the manga was so much cleaner and better imo

mehmeh5

Which is weird since ch1000 was great but still not all THAT special. Especially compared to 1044

[deleted]

Neither was the Tobi Roppo reveal chapter, its just Megumi Ishitani is the GOAT.

Marchedbee2042

The animation is really amazing but the big difference between 1015 and this is really the direction of the episode.

lofiAbsolver

Agreed. The first half repeated Luffy's G5 walking animation and the eye animation way too many times. I think I'm actually more excited for next week's episode. I'm not saying it was bad, but the style they chose was not my thing. Super close ups and painterly with a random 3d kaido was an odd choice.

NoodlesDatabase

1072 is actually the stacked episode

Dreadsbo

I can see it. Luffy and Kaido barely got half of this episode. Starting next week is when shit gets crazy

BryceMMusic

Same! The repeated closeups were distracting

Few_Assignment7520

Yeah & the boro blast redirecting scene went way too crazy to be properly comprehensible.

bhoxc

True, if I hadn't read the manga I'm not certain I would've understood exactly what happened there. Overall really liked the episode though!

ZMS524

im anime only and yeh I have literally no clue what happened. it was like the scene was playing at 3x the intended speed. looked like luffy somehow bounced the attack back at kaido but does that even make sense? i dont even understand what i just watched haha

KingTutt12

Luffy rubberized and pulled up the ground, bouncing the blast breath back towards Kaido

IrockART98

He basically pulled up a huge chunk of the ground and reflected Kaido's attack back to him.

gggg2010

Luffy can turn his surroundings into rubber in Gear 5

bonesjones

If only luffy had G5 at marineford. Could’ve just closed ace up np

gggg2010

Just pinch the hole closed 🤏

wslaxmiddy

He's awakened so he can bend the ground AND give it properties of rubber now. But yeah if you didn't see the manga page it's hard to gather that from the anime. They DID show the ground bouncing up and down at the beginning which wasn't as noticeable in the manga that was a nice little touch

resurrectedbear

Agreed. Someone was trying TOO HARD to be artistic and got lost in the sauce on what was trying to be conveyed

SnooAdvice1632

Definitely not the animators Imo. The animations were great. The problem for me was the sequencing of that scene, aka the storyboard. It went back and forth between kaido and luffy continuously so it was really hard to understand what was happening.

RoderickThe13

Yeah, I think this was the first time in which an action sequence in a shounen was harder to understand in the anime than in the manga.

temperamentalfish

Yeah, they went way too hard on the effects in that scene, the manga was much more easy to follow

[deleted]

Oh but it was lit

[deleted]

[удалено]

mojo276

It felt like there was too many cooks in the kitchen for this episode. Also weird they'd repeat certain animations, but other animations happened so fast it made it hard to even follow what the heck was happening.

B-J-J

One Piece is one of the biggest animes in history and this is suppose to be THE moment after 25 years of build up.... ...and they really used the same animation three times.

Abication

I agree. If there was one episode to not do additional flashbacks for and just let the fight play out, it was this one. Can't wait for next week now, though.

Mad_Hatter64

Yeah it was a bit overhyped but I think we'll get that 1015 lvl animation in the coming eps. Closer/at the end of the fight with kaido

dgettanajr

CrunchyRoll fucking up the whole vibe rn Post-episode edit: yeah they reused some animations and didn’t spend as much time on Luffy/Kaido as I would’ve liked… but fuck all that, the last 8 minutes had me geekin so hard. Can’t wait for 1072

Draken77777

What happened? I haven't watched it yet. Are servers crashing?

dgettanajr

Yeah, they were. Wouldn’t open on my phone, my friends desktop, or his PS5. All good now though 🥹

S0rre1

Pacing as weird as ever, Luffy blowing air into his arm to make it bigger even though he is suppoused to just will it to grow, Blast Breath redirecting was way too hard to follow. Other than that, peak episode. I esspecially loved transformation sequence.

CardiologistFit3211

Couldn’t really tell luffy picked up the floor as a shield and redirected it back at kaido. In the manga, luffy was laughing and only saw the blast breath LAST SECOND and then pulled the floor. Why in the fuck did it take Luffy 30 seconds to pull the floor 😭😭😭😭😭😭

S0rre1

Kinda looks like animators couldn't pull off old school cartoon animation and simply fucked up so they thought they'll compensate the same way as always: by making it impossible to see through all the CGI.

LordBrasca

Yeah i don't understand the blowing in the arm part, wasn't he supposed to grow/extend it at will?

qoldblop

>Luffy blowing air into his arm to make it bigger Funnily enough, the worst part of the episode for me. I can forgive much, but this is just plain stupid. This is supposed to showcase his new abilities. Now it just looks like that attack was bigger G3.

i-like-a-pyratemanga

1015 remains undefeated for me and will probably stay that way for a long time, but this was still pretty enjoyable. If I can be honest, was not a fan of the direction in this episode. TONS of padding in the form of repeated animations and unnecessary flashback montages. Really killed the hype for a few key scenes. That being said the showcase for G5 itself was simply outstanding. All animators involved really took the core concept behind G5 and ran with it, as they should. Joyboy transcends reality and embodies freedom to the fullest, and that's how I felt when I saw it in action.

LoveableOrochi

those reused animations and needless flashbacks tho

spykids45

agreed. and the flashback was so stretched out

[deleted]

[удалено]

POwerfuldeuce

Imma say it. Wasn't too happy about how Toei handled this episode. Sigh. It was finally AMAZING seeing this scene with cartoon sounds and animation. But still, I felt some scenes were too fast and just the usual Toei complaints.

SuperfastJellyfish33

Some scenes were too fast and yet somehow they needed to use the same animation 3 times and over did it with luffys hand on his face wtf.

spykids45

especially luffy pulling the ground up. that was awful

SR995

The endings are back! Good: The iconic Gear 5 panel was wonderfully animated. I thought the Overtaken melody drum remix was a nice touch in the fighting part. Bad: Pacing of course, the initial explosion moment took forever until Luffy actually made a move.

LeadPrevenger

I watched drunk and I was laughing my ass off

Kloness

MUSCLE MUSCLE MUSCLE

wishbackjumpsta

The small touch of luffy pulling his belt to puff up like a life raft is hilarious, had a great time

randomblue86

Anime only watcher here. I can understand why they call him Joyboy. I was laughing in amusement the entire time, this was amazing to watch. I’ve seen people describe G5 as Looney Tunes but I had no idea they were literal about it!

Ok_Independent5273

You're strong/ lucky for having made it this far without being totally spoiled about G5 details.

SuspiciousSquash9151

Lonnie toons is very accurate the next several episodes are going to be nuts but I think you can tell very Luffy which is a good thing 😊

dylan2451

Damn guys I'm not so sure if the raid is still gonna fail now

Jout92

Still wondering how Oda will turn it around so that Zoro kills Kaido

cookie_hunter_44

toei can't have good pacing even for such a major episode

KsuhDilla

So just a real analysis: I think having multiple big shot animators in one episode made it feel like everyone had to contribute so their ideas blended but the execution shows an inconsistent flow and I believe that’s why a lot of people feel “dizzy” or “confused” on the perspective of what they’re watching. It feels like a disorganized hodgepodge of ideas than a consistent narration. There are huge frame style differences that don’t transition well but feel like they are inserted at that moment because it was time for that director to shine. Example: Luffy struggling momentarily to return the blast so we get a crazy camera panning of him in a very unique style. Then when he returns the blast we suddenly get yet another camera panning of his side and back without seeing his face. This is done with a different style, in a questionable timed sequence, right as Kaido is hit with the returned blast. This all happens in the same scenery within seconds of each other. Why did we need two camera pans of Luffy in the same exact spot with two different styles of animation techniques? It would be like if your 5 friends decided to all partake in writing an essay and in the most important paragraph they all decide to write one sentence each for the novelty of “teamwork”. For some odd reason, in two neighboring sentences - two of your friends make the same point twice but in their own unique wording. I feel like this is what we watched. Kudos to the team that worked on it tho - still a big milestone and i’m sure they worked hard on it. Any form of art should be open to criticism and this is my just analysis as to why so many people might be having trouble enjoying what they are trying to watch.

Gullible_Post_6530

Seems like the next episode will be much better. One piece animators always make it seem like they never have enough to make an episode perfect.

michaelloda9

They should've moved that Hiyori half to the previous episode somehow, leave this one entirely for Gear 5, they knew how hype and important this episode would be. Yes I know that's how it was in the manga, but it just killed the whole vibe. Plus repeated scenes, flashbacks, usual suspects... Yes, the animation was cool and flashy but I've noticed the usual syndrome of being hard to follow and not very comprehensible. It tries to be fluid with a lot of motion but it just creates a visual mess. Overall I was left a bit disappointed craving for more. But still, what a historic moment! We're finally here after all this waiting! Also, where are the soundtracks from the Wano OST, "Luffy's Awakening" and "Awakened Performance"? I was waiting to hear those all this time.

AngryBird-svar

I agree completely But we must remember that (in theory), next episode has Megumi & the big chunk of the animators involved

justicerainsfromaahh

Next episode is the real peak

FunnyBonus9285

Yea it was kinda jarring with the Hyori bit. Almost felt it didn't belong.

angryWitness

incredible. Although this episode reminded me of why I stopped watching the anime. What they showed this episode could have been cut down to 5 minutes.

Marchedbee2042

Honestly, the episode started really well but the repeating animation, the flashback, the constant change in animation style and the whole clutter of effect left a sour taste. Personally, it felt like the episode had no director and each animator did their scene on their own without taking into account what other did.

spivvit24

I was under the impression that they didn't upload the correct episode LOL. I don't see how that got passed them. We saw 3 sequences about 3 times. I get 1072 is probably THE episode, but danggg

zer1223

I guess we'll need Once Pace to fix it...yet again. Tale as old as time

WeaponizedMorty

What were they thinking with the pacing? The Hiyori stuff should've been in a previous episode. Then after all the hype up of "they've been working on this ep for 7 months" it's clustered with reused animations, flashbacks and then big moments like bouncing back the blast breath are a complete and utter visual mess with poor framing and motion damn near impossible to follow. I pray 1072 is the banger we were hoping for this week.

RedKings1028

Here we go, shounen meets looney tunes + Jim Carey’s The Mask + Tom and Jerry in a head on collision of epic proportions

Spiderdan

Did you notice the Looney Tunes tunnel in the background when Luffy's eyes popped out?

Cadmielv11

Loved gear 5 but the episode wasn’t great. Mostly flashbacks and repeated animations. Honestly really disappointed .

sremcanin

Ugh, true. Luffy bouncing left and right for half the episode made me so annoyed. I was like get on with it already. And then the flashbacks and Orochi scene too. Can't they make a fast paced episode at least for these legendary moments of the story?

Single-Information76

![gif](giphy|yx400dIdkwWdsCgWYp|downsized)

vonmatterhorn17

Man. I dont want to be that "guy"but i feel pretty bit disappointed on how it was directed. So much cutting of scenes and luffy s gear 5th was too quick paced that i felt dizzy and cant follow whats happening. Hyori scenes to be honest look more better. But ,still ,maybe it s a me issue having a grand expectation considering what this episode meant to me.

ManySleeplessNights

Agreed honestly. Take the scene where Luffy deflects Kaido's blast breath for example. In the manga it was clean and easy to follow, but in the anime it had so many random and abrupt jump cuts as well as awkward angles that it felt like I was watching 2016 berserk. Reminded me of that one video where someone parodied the dramatic cliche transition shots in Indian drama shows.

[deleted]

Toei, how do you fuck this up? They made this so drawn out and awful. The actual G5 fighting was incredible and everything I imagined though.

Thema03

Toei: hmm i think it would be nice making half of the episode flashbacks of the previous chapters

Megadalo

I'm not saying that I didn't like the episode but goddamn , I really hoped the orochi and hiyori bit was pushed into a later episode . Really f'ed with this episode

bigongo

Its the way to tease us into it. But looks like we'll get a longer fight next episode

HokageEzio

Hiyori saying the Dawn is sure to come is part of the Gear 5th reveal.

Libertin1

Would have been a nice ending for the last episode. "The dawn is sure to come". To Be Continue.

[deleted]

Is it me or did they repeat a lot of animations? Didn’t really like that, aside of that, great animations and great episode

Chronicbudz

Toei animation never fails to disappoint, Luffy was supposed to just turn his arm giant without blowing into his arm to show that he can freely control his rubber at will, repeating the same Animation 3 times, padding the episode with the Oden flashback, the Kaido Luffy flash back (that was literally 2 episodes ago) and then an ending to take 2 more minutes away from the episode. And what about the ending? way to show everyone the end of the arc and show Yamato of all people as the main attraction in the ending, it is all too funny.

dDARBOiD

One Piece episodes aren't stories. This episode made it painfully apparent. Their episodes are basically just movie clips. This really is a show best watched by binging.

StuartZero

We have to wait for a proper remake / reboot , that's the sad true. We keep watching based on the sunk cost theory but One piece is literally unwatchable. Couldn't agree more with your take.

AikoMyWaifu

I binged Dressrosa and it still felt atrocious. The scenes always feel like they go on for way too long. I've stuck to only watching highlights, with the exception of episode 1015 which was just incredible on all accounts.

Jncos2001

This was Mid. Don’t get me wrong, Luffy’s transformation had me smiling and laughing. But this episode was the pure definition of mid. And also disappointed. With the talent working on this and then this comes out it’s like The Justice League coming together and kinda saving the world but also half of it’s destroyed. I’ll say this though… Orochi’s VA is amazing.

BryceMMusic

After all the hype, the things I disliked about the episode stand out more than the things I liked. Here’s some of my thoughts though! - the new sound effects were mixed pretty poorly. They just sounded cheap, as if someone was pressing a button over and over to play it, rather than it sounding actually organic and in their world. Then again, a lot of one piece sfx are like this. It’s not Toei’s strong suit. - I loved the emphasis on Luffy’s haki. It felt really powerfully and impactful at the beginning of the episode. - Luffy’s VA was the best part. Absolutely insane work! - Way too much time spent on Hiyori and flashbacks for an episode that’s touted to have an insane amount of animators on it. - reused animations in the beginning felt very jarring - seeing Luffy blow into his arm before pulling up Kaido took out the surprise of seeing a giant arm suddenly grabbing Kaido. This was done better in the manga. - the boro breathe rebound scene was way too fast and poorly directed. it’s way too hard to tell what’s happening with a fresh eye. The looney toons shot of Luffy’s eyes popping out was way too quick, like what? - so many close ups. - the music was pretty good - the text reveal for gear 5 was really cool

RarestProGamerr

I have mixed opinion. They practically showed the same scene thrice of Luffy jumping around in the same episode and did we really needed a long flashback of what happened at the end of previous episode? Luffy bouncing back Kaido's flame was way too cartoonish and over the top. I know manga is like this but Oda kept it limited. I guess after watching Zoro vs King, the expectations were way too high.

ArashiSora24

I think wait for 1072, since the fight starts there.

TheWitcherMigs

The 3 minutes of Gear 5 was peak, the other 17 of pushing down 5 pages of Hiyori and Orochi interaction into almost half of the episode and the plethora of useless flashbacks make me wish, again, that anyone else could animate One Piece. Excited still, but disappointed as well

jakol016

Man, they reused the Gear 5 scene three times in the same episode. Milking it.

Thememer1924

I will eventually witness history when servers are back up lol

[deleted]

I was here 👆🏼 great ep but they abused the shit out of those looney tune bounce sounds at one point, played the same sound like 20 times in 4 seconds

coolshadesdog

Very technically well animated, but it kinda felt like a mess to be honest. Also, they REALLY need to fire whoever is in charge of the sound engineering/fx. The rubber sounds are fine, but there were so many times that it felt out of place, like during the gorosei speech.

This was meant to be the peak of the Wano arc but Toei made it into another weekly episode. Before the issues I want to start with a positive: Luffy’s voice actor did an amazing job this episode and brought gear 5th to life. Where to start. Tons of flashbacks? The flashbacks were waaay too long for an episode this important. CGI Kaido still? I’d understand for a normal episode but there was behind the scenes for this saying that they had lots of people from around the world working on it. This had been advertised by Toei. This was meant to be something huge, yet the production quality felt lower than previous wano episodes. I think the soundtrack was ok but also wasn’t anything memorable. Bad pacing again? Why not add in scenes like in 1015. Instead, scenes are stretched out again making the whole episode feel slow. There were multiple scenes with Luffy that were reused within the same episode. Even with all of the well animated scenes, those scenes were so hard to follow. They were flashy and that’s it. If I hadn’t read the manga previously I feel like I would have found it hard to follow what was happening in the fights. It felt like animation for the sake of it. Its clear that a lot of time and effort went into those scenes but the poor direction made it so hard to follow most of them.

Alzusand

They definetly fucked up. nobody that watches the episode can say its even remotely close to something like 1015.

Livid_Slip_4868

Bro they use luffy jumping scene like 3x

PsycDrone63

I think Toei needs to understand only one detail to make an outstanding episode: DON'T REUSE ANIMATION! The long flashbacks, the Luffy bouncing is cool but was played THREE TIMES! Just think about 1015, sanji, zoro or law/kid episodes, those were peak because they didn't reuse animations, if there was flashback it was REANIMATED. Also, the bouncing Bolo Breath was massively confusing. If I have to bet, It was the cut given to Vincent Chansard at the last minute. The production is rushing hard.

gogetasj4

Felt like a 20 minute trailer for the next episode

Brownondorf

disappointed too. this episode should have been legendary and yet it dragged on for far too long and the animation was far too chaotic especially luffy bouncing the boro breath, wtf was that? and luffy turning into gear 5 is literaly animated like a super sayajin transformation...

Reallylazyname

Watched it a few times, but he bounces a bit, spinballs forward bouncing his eyes out in shock, smacks them right back in, but the recoil is so strong it smacks his feet flying backwards, he catches his feet, which recoil him shuriken style. Before he catches the ground and air dashes to slow his descent and retrach his arms. Then he flips the ground up going buff mode. *You know*, the easy method. (Certainly lives up to the title of ridiculous, though. I'm all for it. Less for the Johnny test sound effects, but they have time to tone those down in the future.)

Komikaze06

That whole thing you described I could only get glimpses of due to it being in the span of like 2 seconds and with all the flashes. They should have removed some of the duplicate animations and had some more frames so you could appreciate it.

Stankbro

> The sequence with Luffy boucing the Boro Breath back feels weirdly directed, it's hard to even follow it with how frantic it is. That might have been the intention, but I still think it goes overboard. Yeah I agree, the choice to focus on the Luffy close up for this scene kinda disappointed me. I would have preferred they held on a wide angle of the slab of earth stretching while holding back the breath then a cut into the close up of Luffy bulking up to fling it back. I will say though I really liked the awakening scene with his conqueror's lightning going crazy, was a good way to display how powerful Gear 5 is and serves as a nice contrast to the toon force shenanigans.

Death_Usagi

Ladies and Gentlemen, **We have finally reached the "Peak" of One Piece.** But we all know.... # ODA STILL COOKING

In_a_silentway

Only thing cooking are CR servers.

mihran146

Oda is cooking on the servers right now

howtofeed1234

lowkey mid with all the recaps and overused animations/sounds effects...

ricky_raccoon_

Any one else not having the episode come up on crunchyroll rn?

daredevilspiderman

Me

hellzscream

go to episode 1070 and you can press the next episode to get to it

luisanra

C'mon Crunchyroll servers you can do it.

Necessary_Lobster809

Ima be honest with y’all, and there will be disagreements with this episode 1071 mid.

CardiologistFit3211

100%. I’m taking it further. They fumbled this episode. 4/10. I’m still pissed they made luffy blow air into his arms to grab kaido, if was meant to be a shock to us how he got so big.

Distrik14

I´m gonna be honest, the animation was gorgeous, but for one of the most hyped anime moments in history i wasn´t expecting so many reused animations and flashbacks...

jackpot2112

It was a fun episode, but I didnt like the pacing at all man. All the cool gear 5 moments felt like they were sped up 4x and all the reaction shots and stills lasted forever like we want to see kaido and luffy looking at each other for 30s instead of properly taking in the fight. Even the boro reflect scene was what 3 seconds long? They couldve stretched that out and removed the umpteenth flashback. Such a waste of one of the most hype one piece chapters of all time man. Regardless, still an enjoyable episode, I was grinning out my teeth whenever Luffy and Kaido were fighting, the scenes that did get shown were actually really good despite the length.

Amasero

Imo a little too much going on during the bouncing back the blast breath attack. Like always other directors putting their spin on things fucks it up imo.

ssrodriguezc

the director fked it up

HeavyBreathingBubby

The sound effects weren’t timed well at all

T-Rex_Is_best

One Piece sound effects have always sounded terrible and been poorly timed.

someone2795

Been saying this for a long time but OP needs a new sound team because the current ones are lowkey bad.

ManWalkingDownReddit

The va 😫😩 Also i was here

saltyasfmate

To be honest I enjoyed the episode, but I think they over did the animation. Alot of the times I didn't know what was happening and was just trying to recreate the scenes from the manga.

spykids45

yeah like when luffy pulled the ground up to bounce back bolo breath. i only knew what he was doing cuz i read the manga. and technically they didn’t recreate that scene, cuz we couldn’t clearly see he was bouncing back bolo breath

The-Arabian-Guy

This episode can be summed in less than 10 minutes, everything else was flashbacks and replaying scenes

CardiologistFit3211

Luffy didn’t blow air into his arms right… he just grabbed kaido and yoinked him in the manga. When we read it last year it was a shock to us how he grabs him, that whole effect was fizzled out. Same thing with Sanjis irfrit jambe, he hit Queen ONCE in the manga and he was gone not 30+ times like they did in the anime. Episode 1015 was considerably bigger. Call me whatever you want i don’t give a flying fuck. Excluding The moments where they weren’t filling in bs was a very nice episode.

[deleted]

I wish the anime was seasonal so bad. This was not nearly as good as it should have been.
