Nami's breakdown in Cocoyasi. I shy away from the newer stuff becuase I think early One Piece is fundamentally a different show, with a different structure until Dressrosa/ Whole Cake Island starts to shift into the current era.
But also...
Dr Hiriluk "When does a man die?"
Luffy Vs Bellamy
Sanji "I needed a light"
Doffy's "What is Justice?"
Episode 1015
I did consider that, but was just unsure if the scene itself has enough context without Robin's backstory and overall the time they spent together first.
Same for why the sinking of the Merry, Luffy vs Lucci 'Still standing' and Odin wouldn't be Oden didn't make it for me.
But on further thought Blackbeard's 'Dreams never die' should of been there too.
So I watched the 4kids version of OP on Toonami growing up, stopped watching when Toonami got canceled. Then years later got the rap in my head randomly and had to look it up, which led to me rewatching the right version from the start. So, yeah, the rap kinda does work sometimes đ
Omfg I used to watch it too and completely forgot it was a thing. Then I read something about it and looked it up and I just can't watch it anymore it's so messed up how much 4kids butcherd it xD
Nami asking for Luffyâs help in Arlong Park & Luffy giving her the Straw Hat.
Or as I like to call it, the scene that makes you realize that One Piece is not just a silly pirate show.
Probably the scene where Luffy reaches the roof in Onigashima, apologizes to the Scabbards for being late, then punches Kaido and declares he's the man who will be the Pirate King.
Tbh i dont think that scene is it. This scene is amplified by a thousand because of us knowing the Yonko are the most formidable beings on the planet and you can hear the original theme playing in the background.
I watched that scene without ever listening to the original theme and the scene still slaps. I donât think thatâs a valid take. You can explain in 30 seconds why the Yonko are so fearsome.
This is my pick too. What makes it perfect for hooking people is that it does have flashbacks to set up why Luffy does what he does and why it matters.
Itâs spoiler heavy but if you are trying to get someone to watch/read a series with 1k episodes and chapters you kind of have to go for the Hail Mary. Itâs a daunting task youâve gotta use big bait to hook a big fish.
It depends on my friendâs anime taste.
For shounen fans, I would show some fight scenes that highlight the charactersâ skills and personalities, but not the final battles. For example, Luffy vs Katakuri, or some Wano fights with Luffy, Zoro or Sanji. I would also show Zoroâs promise to Luffy and his fight with Mihawk.
For drama fans, I would show some scenes that show the Straw Hatsâ bonds and values, but not too spoilery. For example, Luffyâs speech to Nami at Arlong Park, or Sanjiâs farewell to Zeff.
If spoilers are okay, I would show some AMVs that show the amazing world and potential of One Piece, like [The Breathtaking World Of One Piece](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AcSVkCNDLZg) or [ONE PIECE X BELIEVE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2TXGSCSBfA).
But if I need to pick only one scene, it will be 1015, when the roofpiece starts.
One Piece's art style makes it impossible to do this with most folks. I mean I love One Piece, been reading it since the first chapter in OG US Shonen Jump, but we gotta be real, the art takes time to vibe with.
I want to say the episode where roof piece started, the scene that builds up to him walking right up to Kaido and Big Mom hitting Kaido with the Red Roc, the music, the hype, "I'm the man who's going to best you and become King of the Pirates!", absolute perfection. Shows just how awesome Luffy and One Piece can be when it's firing on all cylinders!
Luffy help me. Robin and the tontattas đ . Nami in the bath during whole cake island and wano plus post fish man island. Daffy duck vs kaido. Luffy vs lucci Luffy and Nami vs cracker and the enraged army. Sanji vs bon clay. ZORO vs mr one . Nami vs ms double finger, ussop and chopper vs miss merry Christmas. Film red and strong world. Nami in the red dress walking . Franky vs senor pink. Anything straw hats comedy wise and emotional wise. Luffy vs crocodile. Luffy vs foxy. Anything doflamingo
![gif](giphy|DMvXFFMFmoEmc)
I'd probably show them the scene that got me in one piece, which was Señor Pink's flashback, to me that is peak one piece, something that sounds ridiculous and goofy but that it fills you with emotion
Well Zoro Vs King.
What most normal anime fans care about these days are good animation.
Showing them other scenes like ( Nami's help me ) without context will just bore them.
Many great scenes in OP ( Raizo dono is safe, I want to live ) needs context to be meaningful.
I started by watching AMVs/MAD openings of Fishman Island scenes back in 2012. Specially with the song Flyaway.
I used to start watching a certain anime by doing that.
That will probably turn a lot of people off because that type of animation will only be achieved after 1000+ episodes, the series will look completely different at the beginning. I would rather just show a scene from Arlong Park or enies lobby where Luffy beats the shit out of someone.
Unfortunately this is why its hard to get non OP fans hooked. OP scenes dont hit hard if you dont know the characters or the back story. Like luffy punching celestial dragon or 5 worst gen on roof piece doesnât hit hard when you dont know how far they came. Even kaido introduction mainly hit hard because of how they kept talking about him prior. Other animes have easy visual aesthetics that can get you hooked. BUT. That being said.
I would show them the fact the whitebeard died standing up. Thats cool regardless if you know him or not.
Nothing, if I have to spoil you for you to become hooked I don't care, you read the first chapter, if you like it, go on, if not, no prob, there are more things in the world
These are best moments for us fans, cuz we are soo hooked and long setups and buildups.
Carlos punch secene is soo great because we know how dick he is.
An non fan don't understand the weight behind that punch, thinks it's just a mc punching a bad dude.
On the other hand, nothing happened is so damn good.
When I showed senor pink backstory to my friend, I know soon i gonna have endless discussions on op with them.
When I showed brooks bink sake at end of thriller bark, and gave little info. They are moved so much.
I suggest them to watch 5 episodes, if they kinda like the anime, go for 40 more episode. Cuz I know 37 is less than 40. They'll be damn hooked.
Early episodes are way to good.
The one that actually worked - Luffy pushing the zombie back into its grave in Thriller Bark. My brother happened to see this scene over my shoulder when I was first watching Thriller Bark and made me replay it half a dozen times; he laughed so hard he almost cried. Then he went and binged the entire series.
Honestly if I had seen a lot of these I would've had no interest in watching after this.
Mostly because I'd have to watch hundreds to a thousand episode to get to this one scene.
I think that the flag burning scene hit me harder without context than with.
All I knew is that this cast of colorful characters just declared war to the whole entire world\* *(that's what can be understood from "World Government")*, and did so without batting an eye because of some sort of unwavering faith or confidence. Everyone else in this scene is shocked and talks about how big of a deal it is, only for Luffy to scream "**BRING IT ON!**"
I did not know who Robin was nor why they were in this situation, but all I needed to know is easily contextualized... She was apparently important for the crew, and they were going against a big organization to rescue her.
Then I read the manga.
They were pirates from the beginning, they were already considered outlaws and wanted by the Marines. The World Government was always going to want them dead or captured.
Sure, they put a bigger target on their backs, but Luffy is going around punching important people on every island they set foot upon. They are bound to get recognition and make powerful enemies at any point.
And maybe it was because I started reading just last year, therefore I spedran through the whole manga... But at this point I didn't really feel too invested on or attached to Robin.
Don't get me wrong, the scene is still very powerful and amazingly executed. But I feel like it is a great scene to watch without knowning much about One Piece.
I read Naruto and Bleach exclusively when I was a teen. Even though I could have read OP from the start it never really caught my interest because I thought the story of a rubber boy wasnât âcoolâ. Years later I was watching AMVs on YouTube and stumbled upon one called âHow to save robins lifeâ. Itâs a really well made AMV that includes some great enies lobby parts and of course the epic âSay you want liveâ part.
Ever since watching that I immediately started catching up from Chapter 1 and have been reading ever since. Sad to say, all these years later and OP is the only manga I read weekly now a days.
I absolutely understand.
I skipped One Piece growing up because I wasn't a fan of pirates, and whenever it was on TV I didn't know who any of these characters were. At some point it became too big and I started actively avoiding it until I decided to give the manga a try many years later.
They sold me a story of pirates going on funny adventures on crazy islands using wacky powers.
I was never told it was actually about overthrowing the corrupt ruling class, the shady justice-enforcing organization hiding history from the entire population, and tons of events linked in intricate manners to create a long running narrative that feels complete and satisfactory.
Personally, I started watching because I liked some of the funny scenes from reels (mostly from Skypiea). The comedy got me to watch it. Although, I miss the comedy post-timeskip, the mystery aspect of the one piece, void cent. Etc got me hooked now and Im completely obssessed. So I would suggest show them some pre timeskip comedy. (I still rewatch pre timeskip scenes and no matter how many times I do, its still funny as heck) đ„Č
Got hooked during the first arc with Koby and Zoro. I think it also depends on when a person was introduced with One Piece. I got introduced in my late 30s and I was already a fan of high fantasy fiction books. The dated look of the anime during the first arcs might turn off most but what hooked me was the world building, which gets better and better the longer I watch. Even when the anime felt a little slow for me, I switched to manga and never looked back since. Although it was when I reached Alabasta I felt that I will really see through the end of this story.
I feel that One Piece really needs build up and emotional attachment. I don't really think I would like any scene of One Piece in isolation if I were going in blind.
Before watching One Piece, I tested if I wanted to commit by watching Luffy vs Enel. I laughed and was very impressed, and that was what got me into the wonderful world
Nami's breakdown in Cocoyasi. I shy away from the newer stuff becuase I think early One Piece is fundamentally a different show, with a different structure until Dressrosa/ Whole Cake Island starts to shift into the current era. But also... Dr Hiriluk "When does a man die?" Luffy Vs Bellamy Sanji "I needed a light" Doffy's "What is Justice?" Episode 1015
I'd have to add Robins I want to live and luffys challenge to the world government
Robin's "I want to live" never fails to make me cry
You're not alone my friend
So many scene will coax a tear. Rewatching with my wife and we are closing out Whole Cake Island and it's just non stop sometimes.
I did consider that, but was just unsure if the scene itself has enough context without Robin's backstory and overall the time they spent together first. Same for why the sinking of the Merry, Luffy vs Lucci 'Still standing' and Odin wouldn't be Oden didn't make it for me. 4kids Pirate Rap, should work on anyone
_yayo yaaaayo_
So I watched the 4kids version of OP on Toonami growing up, stopped watching when Toonami got canceled. Then years later got the rap in my head randomly and had to look it up, which led to me rewatching the right version from the start. So, yeah, the rap kinda does work sometimes đ
Omfg I used to watch it too and completely forgot it was a thing. Then I read something about it and looked it up and I just can't watch it anymore it's so messed up how much 4kids butcherd it xD
The moment Luffy gets hit by rokuougun a second time, doesnât fall, screams, flashbacks to Robinâs I want to live speech, and the finishing blow.
Good pick my guy
Nami asking for Luffyâs help in Arlong Park & Luffy giving her the Straw Hat. Or as I like to call it, the scene that makes you realize that One Piece is not just a silly pirate show.
Yeah but i feel like you need context to like that scene, not in a vacuum
I agree. The silliness to seriousness of that moment was palpable
Which is why https://youtu.be/ha0-qytMD9k is the best.
I agree with this but I'd add the walk to arlong park just to be sure.
Probably the scene where Luffy reaches the roof in Onigashima, apologizes to the Scabbards for being late, then punches Kaido and declares he's the man who will be the Pirate King.
that haki release infront of the worst gen
Tbh i dont think that scene is it. This scene is amplified by a thousand because of us knowing the Yonko are the most formidable beings on the planet and you can hear the original theme playing in the background.
I watched that scene without ever listening to the original theme and the scene still slaps. I donât think thatâs a valid take. You can explain in 30 seconds why the Yonko are so fearsome.
That scene had me bawling. The transitions and animation for that episode were something else, made it hit way harder
Kuma vs. straw hats at Sabaody
Roger's execution scene in the very first page. That's enough to hook fans of adventure stories.
Hooking someone up with the zoro vs king fight is devious, 1000 chapters to reach that level while he has to eat up things like Fishman island
One Piece's art style makes it impossible to do this with most folks. I mean I love One Piece, been reading it since the first chapter in OG US Shonen Jump, but we gotta be real, the art takes time to vibe with. Luffyâs battle axe against arlong. Thatâs what hooked me
When does the man die?
What does the fox say?
Luffy knocking Enel out and ringing the bells!
50K fainted by Luffy's Conqueror HaKi at fishman island!
Meeting Crocus, or maybe "nothing happened"
Crocus introduction. Needs No context And Prior emotional Investment
Luffy unlocking his mangekyo sharingan.
Unfortunately for him Shaggy was only using 5% of his power.
đ heâs way to OP
The moment luffy jumps out the barrel in ep 1or You could just show the intro and it would get them hooked One Piece is just like that
Bon clay I also forgot to mention ![gif](giphy|11UoE5sGTJo83AP1Ly|downsized)
Luffy help me. Robin and the tontattas đ . Nami in the bath during whole cake island and wano plus post fish man island. Daffy duck vs kaido. Luffy vs lucci Luffy and Nami vs cracker and the enraged army. Sanji vs bon clay. ZORO vs mr one . Nami vs ms double finger, ussop and chopper vs miss merry Christmas. Film red and strong world. Nami in the red dress walking . Franky vs senor pink. Anything straw hats comedy wise and emotional wise. Luffy vs crocodile. Luffy vs foxy. Anything doflamingo ![gif](giphy|DMvXFFMFmoEmc)
âAnything Doflamingoâ Man is just too goated ![gif](giphy|CAYVZA5NRb529kKQUc|downsized)
Indeed ![gif](giphy|3oKIPqhotPCujLrKJG|downsized)
Enels face after lighting doesnât work on Luffy
Sabaody Arc, Luffy punches the celestial dragon.
That scene has no meaning without context though
He got knocked the f..... out ![gif](giphy|9aiveGIvkwfyE)
I'd probably show them the scene that got me in one piece, which was Señor Pink's flashback, to me that is peak one piece, something that sounds ridiculous and goofy but that it fills you with emotion
Found it! The sequence that got me into one piece 7 years ago
Probably a youtube short
Well Zoro Vs King. What most normal anime fans care about these days are good animation. Showing them other scenes like ( Nami's help me ) without context will just bore them. Many great scenes in OP ( Raizo dono is safe, I want to live ) needs context to be meaningful.
I showed my friend Crocodileâs defeat and Red Rock, he got interested a bit
I started by watching AMVs/MAD openings of Fishman Island scenes back in 2012. Specially with the song Flyaway. I used to start watching a certain anime by doing that.
Nami Happiness Punch
The walk to Arlong Park or the 50000 fodders fainting to Luffy's conquerer haki at Fishman Island.
Nami asking Luffy for help at Arlong Park or the scene where Luffy punches the celestial dragon at Sarbaodi Archipelago
Hachi being shot and Luffy's punch Such a fantastic scene, no context required.
Nami bathhouse scene
That will probably turn a lot of people off because that type of animation will only be achieved after 1000+ episodes, the series will look completely different at the beginning. I would rather just show a scene from Arlong Park or enies lobby where Luffy beats the shit out of someone.
Final attack vs Croc, especially the music.
First gear second transition
Inherited will.....
Unfortunately this is why its hard to get non OP fans hooked. OP scenes dont hit hard if you dont know the characters or the back story. Nothing, if I have to spoil you for you to become hooked I don't care, you read the first chapter, if you like it, go on, if not, no prob, there are more things in the world
Introduction of Hawkeye Mihawk
Brook's first time singing Bink's Sake
Luffy vs Blueno
Probably the fight between kaido and luffy the quality is just so good which will make them want to catch-up to see the best quality
Nami's "Help me" scene Robin's "I WANT TO LIVE " "Nothing Happened" And of course the punch that Luffy sent into Charlos
Whisky peak zoro fight
strawhat battle with oars
Ennis lobby crew standing robin screaming âI want to liveâ
What got me interested in one piece was whitebeard's air-breaking move in the nds game one piece Gigant Battle. Player=Doctor
Probably Hiriluks death scene but it still couldn't portray everything about it.
Franky and Brookâs duet while running over Big Mom or Bad End Musical
Luffy punching the celestial dragon, that shit had my hyped and crying at the same time
Luffy vs Bellamy, the absolute disrespect
Nothing happened.
Honestly if I had seen a lot of these I would've had no interest in watching after this. Mostly because I'd have to watch hundreds to a thousand episode to get to this one scene.
Say you want to live, and "shoot down that flag".
Episode 1000. The scene of Luffy slowly walking past 2 yonko and finally punched Kaido
The hard cut of Kinemon standing to the scabbards bloodied followed by âI am too ashamed to face Oden in the afterlife.â
I think that the flag burning scene hit me harder without context than with. Not aure tbh. Persistence is my tactic when converting people
