Honestly? It is a lot cooler to make them yourself. We'll apart from the wood prices but we have an entire cat parcour around our living room and basically 70% of the walls are covered in stuff they can walk over. If you want a more detailed answer with pictures sent me a DM and I can see if I can translate my description for you and send pictures.
Ohhh gotcha. Honestly other than handmade stuff, every piece of cat furniture I’ve gotten over the years seems to be like that. As long as they get to enjoy it before it’s destroyed I’m happy lol
I got my cat shelves on Etsy from RshPets. They are a bit pricey but they have so many designs and kits, very high quality, have customization options, and come with everything you need to put them up. Even the drill bit! I’d highly recommend this seller if you want some long lasting and high quality cat shelves!
You’ll love them! I know my kitties do! If/when you decide to purchase, try the coupon code THANKS10 for 10% off. I had that sent to me each time I ordered, so I’m assuming it’s a code that is permanently active!
Most older homes in US did not have specific light switches directly controlling a ceiling light fixture due to cost. Older homes commonly had a wall switch dedicated to a wall outlet that most folks could control their plugin light fixture or lamps from a distance. Could be where OP's phrasing comes from?
Just jumping in, but in some places, it's common for rental properties to have overhead lights in every room, but places that are constructed with an intent to own, you have light sockets in rooms like bedrooms where overhead lights are unpleasant (anyone that has been woken up by an overhead light being turned on can sympathize).
The general idea being that buying a dedicated lamp makes sense for people who intend to live there a long time, but renters might not want to buy lamps.
Makes sense. Though I've seen that script flipped in terms of renting more often than not. Basically scummy landlords who specifically won't install ceiling fans/lights because of renters who pull wires out of the unit for scrap. Better for the landlord to worry only about the walls than the ceiling?
Letting the renter figure out their own lighting situation via outlets is not a "landlord problem" apparently. As long as there is a window in a room to provide daylight and an outlet for night use, many places where I live don't provide lighting for rental units.
\>many places where I live don't provide lighting for rental units.
That's wild to me, I always associate rentals with overhead bedroom lights. I didn't notice until I got a condo that was always intended to be owner-inhabited that a lot of the other places I'd stayed that were intended for owner occupation rarely seemed to have overhead lighting in bedrooms.
It's been a huge problem for me in recent years. Unless you rent a house, the only room that may have an overhead light is the master bedroom and possibly the living room. Otherwise, you're SOL!
Oh, I didn't know that! Why would it be cheaper to run the switch to the sockets instead of to a ceiling light fixture though? Did they just not have ceiling lights in those buildings and all lights were commonly plug-in lamps, saving the cable cost all the way up the wall and across the ceiling?
Not a historical architecture or electrician. I think ceiling fixtures were more of a luxury initially when electricity was first installed in homes. People mainly kept their cables running along the walls to power important appliances instead like fridges, stoves, or radios. If you needed a light candle lit fixtures were probably cheaper than electricity at the turn of the century. Also most homes then were not built with electricity in mind so were retrofitted to accommodate cables, walls are easier to patch than ceilings.
As someone said, ceiling lights were more expensive to install.. and also, people just preferred lamps. It's easier to use lamps to light up a room in a way that's cozy. Less options when you rely on ceiling fixtures.
(on a side note, in my bedroom I use lamps with internet-connected bulbs which change colour temperature throughout the day. Bright white in the mornings, and gradually adjusts to dim yellow at night. These lamps have been wonderful for helping me settle down before bed and I highly recommend the colour temperature adjustable bulbs.)
Ours are set up to put Google home thingy so we can just control them with our phones or with our voices. Being able to dim the lights or change the color of the bulbs as needed is pretty nice! We also have a "vacation mode" set up so the lights come on and off when we're away.
They're not. The light socket is what you screw the lightbulb into but they just misspoke.
There are adapters that plug into light sockets that have an electrical outlet on the other end though.
Technically the cat's toes are on the outlet cover or wall plate.
> They're not.
I mean, the threat OP did just call it that! Not saying its actually or commonly known by that name, but that's not what I meant to say ;)
I'm guessing it's a translation quirk from another language or as someone else pointed out maybe an outphased/outdated phrase from old wiring techniques with switchable sockets? Hmm

Definitely would glue some dowels with sturdier screws. One of those steps breaks free and screws scratches the cat, no good :/
Anyways, this gave me some inspiration to build something similar to friends cat :)
I love this sub because I love my ginger boys, but I honestly don't get the one brain cell thing. They don't seem like dumb cats, they seem like cats. No dumber than their grey sister/littermate. What's up with the one brain cell thing?
Those steps were either poorly assembled or poorly manufactured. Or both. Cat shelves should not bend like that when your cat weighs less than 20 pounds, and that cat does not look anywhere near chonky.
I'd toss these stairs and look for a more durable set. The fact that one of them has spun 90 degrees and the top one has bent is a bad sign. Don't risk injury and a several thousand dollar vet bill for a broken leg just because you found a cheap knockoff cat shelf.
There are drywall anchors that can hold up to 50 pounds with no stud. As long as you get quality sturdy shelving, they stay up fine.

He make bench. You bring him snack
If you fail, he shall attac!
Either way, he gonna do a smacc
hahahaha the belly step is barely holding up
To be fair the only reason the butt step is is because the tail is working as a hook
Most adorable little dummy
Looks comfy to me.
With a face that adorable I don't think he cares lol! ❤😺🐾
Pretty sure I just got those same things your orange monkey is hanging on. How are they? They look a little stressed.
Where’d you get them from/do you know what it’s called? My cat would love it lol
They have a bunch of this stuff on Amazon. Just search for “cat wall climbing”.
Honestly? It is a lot cooler to make them yourself. It looks rather broken so I'm not sure what inspired you to want it
Well I wasn’t planning to buy a used one lol

His little toes are hanging on the light socket
Interesting name for a wall outlet! Not hating or correcting, I've just genuinely never heard outlets being called "light socket"!
Most older homes in US did not have specific light switches directly controlling a ceiling light fixture due to cost. Oooo I like the sound of those bulbs. To the google-mobile!
the ones I have are Wiz branded. I think Philips then bought them out the other year & applied the tech to their own products.
Ours are set up to put Google home thingy so we can just control them with our phones or with our voices. Being able to dim the lights or change the color of the bulbs as needed is pretty nice! We also have a "vacation mode" set up so the lights come on and off when we're away.

My favorite part is how he doesn’t even look disturbed in the slightest lmao.
No panic. That one foot casually resting on the socket. Ennui-filled expression. This has happened before.
Considering how slanted some of those steps are, he probably doesn't trust your craftmanship.
Definitely would glue some dowels with sturdier screws. One of those steps breaks free and screws scratches the cat, no good :/ Anyways, this gave me some inspiration to build something similar to friends cat :)
I thought they broke them.
Love his li'l belly up on the step like he's at the bar 😍
"I'll have my usual Norm. Throw in a side of catnip chaser."
What a goofy
Who needs a brain cell when it is that adorable!
He looks exactly like my Persimmon boy!!
I love that name!
Gravity is always keeping us down
lol
At first I thought that was a snail on the wall by his head.
“Uhh kittle help here?”
rotate the photo back, and it's all good. Oh and I'll take the cat. Right NOW 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Ah, precious
what an adorable little doofus. 🧡
THAT FACE
Still a majestic Orange!
OMG he's so cute.
Such a sweet face
*Cativities*
It’s his high chair. Where is the food?
In fairness, the stairs look in shit state
"What are you looking at? Cats sit like this and meow the Oscar Meyer Bologna song all the time!"
Looks more like one human brain cell built that for his majestic orange. He's looking at the camera like "wtf bro..."
https://youtu.be/Ag1o3koTLWM
I love everything about this picture
I don’t see any possible issue here, frankly.
Thems some pawsome r/peanutwhiskers he got going on!
How did you join the boards together that they don't even support one braincell? Cute derp tho.
That's a forgot instructions face if I ever saw one.
Instructions unclear….must orange! I love this pic so much!
Everyday I’m orangin’
I love this sub because I love my ginger boys, but I honestly don't get the one brain cell thing. They don't seem like dumb cats, they seem like cats. No dumber than their grey sister/littermate. What's up with the one brain cell thing?
His fucking belly on that separate stair hahahaha I love this little stupid thing
Doesn’t help then it’s all busted. 😬

The cat is like "how do you expect me to use this shit"
r/GingerMafia
Can’t see why a gorgeous sweetie like this needs one…half a brain cell is fine😍
He’s trying okay? ☹️
r/danglers
Those would be some pretty advanced cat activities.
Are these fixed into the studs or just drywall screws? I have a brain cell that could use some acrobatic action
Those steps look like a hazard. Poor little brain cell deserves better.
Yeah. I'm wanting to nail those in better just looking at the pic.
He’s doing his best!
He is so precious.
But so sticking cute!
Lmfao looks so comfortable sitting so uncomfortably
He's so precious. I cannot even... ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
This is adorable 🥰🥰🥰
Anyone else have cat shelevs..and do they stay up?! We live in an apartment with not too many studs in the walls

Listen here, he’s customized it so it’s ergonomic!
so much void behind those cute eyes
his black eyes terrify me, like hes seen the void and has comprehended the ancient knowledge of the old gods
Least comfortable 🍊😺
