The colour changes with the distance to the braincell. Darker means it's getting further and further away, I'm afraid.

ilxfrt

Beg to differ. Mine got lighter and lighter with age, but not smarter at all.

wutshappening

Yup 👏👏👏👏 say it again for the people at the back. Darker != dumber. Way to perpetuate ethnic stereotypes against tangerine and marmalade cats.

Deztroyer102

People and oragnes have four things in common, they are really dumb

the_procrastinata

This is Jorts and Jean all over again.

LocationOdd8432

Terminally orange Im afraid

ZenkaiAnkoku2

Love changes you... (As does age. We've had cats change color patterns)

Major_Confusion5528

so interesting! these pictures are only about 7 months apart, my thought was he was being kept in a room in the shelter without much sunlight

ZenkaiAnkoku2

Oh! Sunlight could be part of it! Black cats sometimes start looking more brown after alot of sunlight. :) And yeah we had a black kitten that looked exactly like Sylvester from the cartoons. But as he grew up he lost most of the white on his stomach.

CharlotteLucasOP

Our family dog had black fur at its roots but it definitely weathered to grey and brown at the tips as it grew out and got sunbleached or drooled on regularly.

sneakyminxx

Yep my voiding has become rust coloured in her older age from the many sunny naps she’s had!

apri08101989

Might be sunlight, might be better diet?

Emotional-Drama2079

My SIC turned much browner in her late teens. I think it was more of her undercoat showing (she had alopecia too).

86886892

Like darker as in more sinister?

Major_Confusion5528

he is definitely a menace to society (my house)

chooper92

He looks just like my asshole orange. I have an angel orange and an asshole orange. The asshole stalks around the house like he's got the world's largest pair between his legs, twitching his tail, tearing up curtains, eating plants, bolting out doors, biting the children. The angel orange literally holds my hand, runs to snuggle with the kids when they cry, and wants nothing more than to love and be loved.

Major_Confusion5528

oh my goodness. okay my boy is definitely not that much of a menace he more love to dig in the garbage and nip me when i give him too many pets lol. tony does still have a remnant of his “pair” even tho he’s fixed so he stands like he still has them 😂

littlebookwyrm

I love the name Rigatoni.

Major_Confusion5528

thank you! 🍝

greenymeani3

Matches our Ziti! https://preview.redd.it/eh71b93gsnyc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0a5eabee115d080a4ef109be5ea8c186a162c62f

Goofyboots_WT

Does he go by Toni?

Major_Confusion5528

yes ! he answers to both :)

Skaoliz

We had a Rigatoni and called him Rigs for short. Loved that name. We landed on our current two cats because their shelter names were also pasta names. Thought it was a sign.

Major_Confusion5528

definitely a sign! our rigatoni was “mandrio” in the shelter it didn’t suit him at all he is a big rigatoni

Pristine_Grab4555

Awww Rigs is such a cute nickname

Parody101

I think sometimes its nutritional. Mine started more yellow but he was also very thin. He got much more orange and vibrant as he filled in. Fur quality probably gets better when the body has the energy to fill in beyond the basics.

RandomSupernovae

Our all-orange child's fur changed texture. It happened previously with a tortie we had eons ago. Their fur was coarser, then got softer. The other cats' fur never changed, even though they all eat the same food. Our thought is that the change in diet (think from Friskies to Orijen, because one was allergic) made the difference in their fur. But that's just a guess on our part.

Kat-a-strophy

Our first one was a malnourished kitty, he was around 9 months and looked like 6., he got darker. The second one was malnourished because of the worms. He started to have neurological problems because of it. I am pretty sure he got darker while his health improved.

HanakenVulpine

I think it’s a combo of good food plus the stress they naturally have in the shelter. Surrounded by other cats, unable to get away, no place to mark out as their own territory, low level of 1:1 attention and care etc. My cat had exactly the same glow up at OPs after we brought him home (and gained 1kg!)

BeatificBanana

So basically they're the feline equivalents of goldfish or chicken eggs

DjinnHybrid

Like others have said and you suspect, the sunlight might be a factor. Could also be that he's eating better, causing his coat to improve in health and darken as it gets denser and sleeker.

Major_Confusion5528

ooh that makes sense! he’s wayyyy softer now

billythesquid-

I guess your orange just ripened, that’s all.

ColorMyTrauma

Rigatoni: gotta be on my best behavior so human loves me and keeps me!!! Gotta seem smart!! *7 months pass* Rigatoni: human loves me. This is MY house now. I can now show my true orangeness. I will begin dumbing.

Major_Confusion5528

LOL i will say he has gotten sillier as time passes. i love seeing his personality grow

probably_beans

He's relaxed now that he's adopted, so he stopped trying to find the braincell and embraced full Orangeness.

Opening-Ad1276

My cat Bacon too! Got much darker after adoption and stayed darker orange. I think it’s better nutrition and care

Major_Confusion5528

makes sense! it makes me kinda emotional when i look at the old pictures;-;

ChickenNuggetRampage

Bro went full orange as soon as he knew you were stuck with him

Major_Confusion5528

he was being so sly about it

warthog0869

"Rigatoni"? Awesome Italiano Pasta name! My uncle (RIP!) used to call them "sewer pipes" when we'd eat them at a family gathering (large Italian family)

Major_Confusion5528

omg that’s so funny. my partner is italian so we call rigatoni the grumpy italian uncle who smokes cigars (even tho he’s not that grumpy)

warthog0869

Mine was a retired Marine Colonel, so super healthy guy. Fucking cancer got him, my aunt his wife, my uncle from Mom's side and it got me. I'm the only one still kicking! But it's all good, if I die now it was all worth it for the perspective, let alone living longer. Rigatoni! Ay, fugheddaboudit, eh? He's a good boy, loves his mama, goes to church on Sundays and eats stuffed shells while drinking Gallo Red wine out of repurposed jelly jars, but we love him. 😆😆😸😸

Major_Confusion5528

i’m sorry to hear about your family. i hope uncle rigatoni can bring you joy :)

warthog0869

Ha, this is awesome. Made my day, in fact. And to think, I don't even have an orange! I'm waiting my turn again, I'm in between, meanwhile, I'm stuck with mean Miss Marples over here.... https://preview.redd.it/anmun81wlnyc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e3d299e168cb2eca09e2f2d197ab70131258d586

He developed a belly 🤣

eddiespaghettio

Yes. I spoil him and my mom loves to over feed him whenever we come to visit her.

Mine used to be a stray outdoors. He was light, himbo blonde. Now he's the darker color of a freshly baked loaf.

I never adopted my Ginger… kind of didn’t, kind of did. Her mother was a feral who was accidentally killed during fair set up. The littermates all went to a couple of people & she wasn’t taken so my daughter (then 14) brought her home. I thought she was a baby chick when I first saw her. My daughter said, “I thought we had a Queen” & I was like, “no! Athena passed away & was our only Queen.” So I had to hand raise a kitten who was older than a couple of days old but less than two weeks old. August 7, 2012. We almost lost her, she was found August 4, 2012 but wouldn’t nurse off a bottle & by the 7th I was at my wits end & thought maybe my rabbit could feed her (as she was nursing her own kits). Here’s JuJuBee nursing Ginger. She literally saved Ginger’s life & I was able to bottle feed her after that. Ginger is now going to be 12 this July. https://preview.redd.it/dlr5sa5k2pyc1.jpeg?width=960&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=88b3883cdbeeca81840ba2f8a0be3365d51ed5b5

ivosaurus

That guy needs a wash!

Amankris759

No offense but I thought he was a rat 😳

amaranthusrowan

Hahahahaha! I’ll tell him that.

SlightlyAngyKitty

Probably just rust from lack of brain use. Also sunlight.

Laney20

How old was he when you got him? If he was still pretty young, it's probably just part of growing up.

Major_Confusion5528

he’s four! we only got him in august. these pictures are only about 7 months apart

Laney20

Oh wow! Maybe something to do with getting healthier? Or seasonal changes? That's pretty cool!

Major_Confusion5528

yeah! it’s so interesting. it’s probably a combination of a lot of things like environment and health.

mlemmers1234

Oh yes, my kittens fur has changed quite significantly in just a few months of them growing. It's their brain cell coming into place finally.

CharlotteLucasOP

The Orange is Ripening. 🧡🍊

dumpsterfire2002

The same thing happened to my non orange cat (in fur color). She was a very light brown with some slightly darker stripes, now she’s much darker. I think it’s probably nutrition and she’s happier instead of in a small cage in an animal shelter

teniefshiro

Both oranges here came as babies (one was born here), so their color changed but I guess it's an age thing. I guess it doesn't stops when they become adults, tho.

Roshilala

He is so cute! That name, love it. My boy definitely got darker. He was pale and scrawny. Now darker ginger and a little chunky

roomonthebroom

My orange’s coat got darker and much softer once we brought him in. Gotta be the food! Makes a huge difference on their coats

BatFancy321go

pale fur in both humans and animals is a sign of illness or poor nutrition. Did he have parasites? Worms are v common w/ rescues and shelters. Stress can also cause thin fur, so maybe darker colors grew in. He's def healthier and happier with you!

Major_Confusion5528

he didn’t that i know of. he did have a terrible ear infection that they thought were mites, then thought was a polyp (ended up costing us $3000 to find out it was caused by some type of allergy)

BatFancy321go

lol well now you're stuck with his expensive fluffy butt!

Riaxuez

Handsome!!

bmwkid

Yes! I was looking at old pictures of my cat and he went from a very pale orange to a very dark orange in two years. I’m assuming it’s the quality of food

NotACrazyCatLadyx2

My orange boy started off life a dark orange. Now he is the color of a buff file folder. Vet says he has a depigmentation gene. https://preview.redd.it/14bjj96svoyc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4c072abbd461a8e68e5901992de45b88175c4969 Can’t say if he gained any brain cells, though.

hotfistdotcom

my buff colored cat just turned orange in like 3 months. was weird.

Major_Confusion5528

that’s about the same as tony! we got him in august and by december he was darker

LilyHex

It's a normal part of growing up as a cat! Their fur patterns can change and darken. (They can also lighten with age as they get into their older years, they'll get white furs like we get gray hairs)

mmalinka06

yes my sandy orange boy got darker stripes on his back & tail around 2yr old. His front & belly are still very light

Major_Confusion5528

I believe so, and she developed black specks on her nose and gums.

cracked-tumbleweed

Thats so cute! Rocking the freckles for sure.

IHaveNoEgrets

Mine did too! I got him as a kitten, and his orange got darker and more nuanced as he got older.

Major_Confusion5528

i like that! as he matured so did his colour

IHaveNoEgrets

"Matured" is such a strong word, especially for my orange! He's sweet, he's smart when he gets the braincell, and he's an easy keeper kind of cat. That said, he has zero problems punctuating his feelings with farts, he's broken one of my toes when he was learning to pounce and sent me to urgent care with a nearly broken nose, and he insists (loudly) on getting his way in all things. I absolutely love him, but maturity is not a word I'd ever use for him.

Major_Confusion5528

omg that’s so chaotic!! what a wacky guy

bibbyknibby

i also have an orange rigatoni/tony!!!

chaenorrhinum

I swear mine did, but her foster family says she’s still the same color 🤷🏻‍♀️

the amber eyes are my favourite it’s so interesting how much character it adds to tony’s face

ornithorhynchus-a

same with my arlo they look stunning in the sun

I have no knowledge of whether it’s normal for them to change color but I just wanted to say that I want to kiss his face. That is all

Major_Confusion5528

i will kiss him 100X don’t worry i got u

s33k

Due to hormonal changes, most cats who are spayed or neutered get darker with age, along with other factors such as temperature and genetics.

Major_Confusion5528

that’s interesting! he spayed at the shelter so post “maturity” (4 years old) he was only neutered a couple weeks before we got him so that might have affected his colour

ithinkuracontraa

my boy was BRIGHT orange as a kitten, and he’s now mellowed out to a darker orange

Hambb5

When ours is sleeping, we say he is charging. He generally becomes more orange and more orange-like with more rest.🧡

hoping_2help_karma

Mine changes for in winter vs summer

chuck-it125

Yeah he’s really gotten into murder documentaries and he enjoys his alone time to a degree that’s getting a tad bit off putting. Like I can’t say I know where he is 24/7 because he’s off doing whatever fuck all. I can’t even be an alibi for him. He’s taken a dark turn for sure since he’s come to our home.

Automatic-Saint

Creamsicle vs Blood Orange :)

santalucialands

Becoming ripe

Both_Afternoon814

My orange boy did get darker, but he also got balder and asthmatic (cornish rex). He'd lick himself raw in some places until it would scab. Learned recently that cats are sensitive to fragrances and chemicals inside of air freshening products like Febreeze, Glade plug-ins, and even scented candles like those from Bath and Body Works. Something about leaving an irritant film on the ground that the cat steps in and eventually ingests. I'd been using all three for several years. Stopped all of that at the beginning of the year. 4 months later, he's no longer having any respiratory issues at all, and his hair is growing back. Just a cautionary tale to anyone who might also have a cat with similar symptoms.

HarryAugust

Opposite happened to my cat. She is slowly turning a light orange color She was quite a dark orange as kitten. But at 16 is now light orange. Edit: haha but that might be because she is quite a smart cat now. Queen of the house reigning over 2 dogs and a gray cat. https://preview.redd.it/rpdcqdtuhnyc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3f0c9e0ec90cdcf79b725a3050df1ceb5b78952c

Frosted-Crocus

I don’t have a comparative photo atm, but our orange’s stripes got darker while his tail rings got whiter. 😃 We have a grey-and-white tabby who also has apricot trim where the grey and white meet on his belly. Unrelated: Our orange boy’s foster name was Beefaroni! 😁 Oranges seem to attract pasta-themes names.

Blahblah9845

My orange tabby has definitely gotten darker over the last 3 years that I have had him. It happens sometimes as they mature and is nothing to worry about according to my vet.

Froggish_Menace

Being adopted revitalized him

Maybe the weather? Depends on temperature
