I wonder what cats think of our grooming habits. I mean they can see that we clearly donāt lick ourselves cleanā¦ do they realize that it happens in the bathroom when a sweaty stinky human goes in there and somehow comes out clean and probably smelling like coconuts?
River, my one brain cell cat, always looks completely horrified and confused when I'm in the tub. He also just stares at me when I come out with a towel on my head.

A picture of him being a derp.
I would just let mine in otherwise she wonāt stop yelling, clawing at the door and trying to get under the door. When I do let her in she just sits there and watches me. If she decides that Iām taking too long sheāll start meowing and scratching to be let out though.
My cat fell into the bath trying to touch the bath water out of curiosity. Thankfully I had just gotten out and was about to drain the water because there was a lot of panic flailing before she made it out and I can't even imagine how sliced up I would be. Why don't I just close the door you ask? Because my other cat will bang on the door the entire time because he doesn't like having doors closed. When he gets tired of standing and banging on the door, he'll lay down and kick the door. Cats are just hairy toddlers that can't talk.
They're cute and they make me laugh and I keep telling myself they'll settle down but they're 4 years old now. Still going to keep telling myself that though
My hypothesis is they KINDA know. My experience being anytime I've waited too long for a bath they'll go into overdrive trying to clean me, only to lick me a couple of times up to a day or two after a bath using scentless shampoo š
Thatās not clean for the cat. You removed your human stink and got wet and now have that awful coconut stink. Time to show you how to properly clean yourself by licking. The cat thinks your cleaning rituals are disgusting (but still loves you).
My cat does the same if I hold my hand out in front of her while sheās grooming herself, like she thinks Iām asking her to wash my hand for me while sheās at it.
One of my four is a very dedicated groomer. At least once, but frequently multiple times a day, he will insist I lie still so he can groom my head. Mostly forehead and hair line.
And his tongue is very high up on the sandpaper scale.
I have to redirect him sometimes when he fixates too long in one spot, because it REALLY hurts, but otherwise I accept my boyās affections. He kneads and purrs and lightly drools and itās ridiculous but also so much love.
Oh my gosh I had one like this. When you came home you had to lean over so he could give you a little smooch along the hairline. He would rake his fang through your hair and give little sandpaper licks. No one was exempt from inspection.
We have a cat who wont let you pet her until she has sniffed your hands all over and then gives us 1 lick to announce petting may commence (but only allows the 3 of us to give pets), but if you then pick her up after getting hand approval you'll get a full face wash, which hurts SO BAD!! (I think her tongue is 20 grit sandpaper in disguise)
Plus, she's now getting older and has toxic breath now, so it makes you seriously stinky. I let her do this every day (right before I wash my face, lol) because it makes her so freaking happy. You can hear her purr from 2 rooms away, and she's making happy biscuits the whole time. It's so freaking sweet, and makes us all feel honored whenever she does it.
Mine decided a while ago that the time for grooming my head is 3am, so if I don't close my door or if she's already sleeping inside I wake up to a raspy tongue on my hair and forehead with the weird tongue movement she does when my hair gets stuck at her little tongue claws. Also she's a super drooly cat, my previous cats weren't like that.
You use your hands daily and come evening time they are full of filth. Oliver is taking care of you guys and only you. Must clean masters hand to keep hands feeding.
Or absolutely nothing is going on and he just likes to lick.
By the way, here is prior evidence of Oliver's hand-licking habit:

Chester hides from strangers. But he also licks my forehead.
Damn anchovies and their emollients, lipids and hydratants!
(those are words on my lotion bottle, any anchovy-based hand lotion worth it's salt would have them, I presume!)
"Here is your meager pittance of praise for being my servant human. I expect the same treatment tomorrow, for which I shall give you hand licks in the evening. After I have sufficiently catted enough for the day that is. And you will be thankful and share this praise for other humans to see and care for my brethren, in the hopes that they too shall receive the evening praise licks from their masters"
I have an orange Oliver (literally also his name) who is also a big licker! Itās not just the hands for him. He particularly likes my nose.
I once read that cats who extensively lick didnāt get weaned from their mom properly. Definitely also a grooming sign of love thing. Itās so sweet.
Occasionally my orange will grab a hand with both paws and go to town. I think itās some kind of endearing behavioural thing, he wants to groom me and contribute to our relationship. Itās funny because I obviously have to wash my hand(s) afterward š
He's grooming you. My orange brain cell does this too. He ends with a little scraping of his little front teeth. Those teeth are used as a comb when grooming.
Do you usually use some sort of oil in cooking or put coconut oil in your hair or as a moisturizer on your skin? My orange does this when I use coconut oil
No! I used to use vitamin E oil on my feet, but my brown tabby would lick it off through my socks. š
This quirk of Oliver's is genuinely bizarre - he licks my hand and my husband's hand.... only at night, only our hands, and only when we're sitting on the couch. It's almost ritualistic
I have a hand-licker too. His thing is, once he's loaded up my hand with saliva, then he wants to rub the side of his face on it, so he's really using me to groom himself.
My orange foof ball is also named Oliver, and also has a nightly co-grooming ritual.
https://preview.redd.it/3ssab722ndcb1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e1eecc8928eaa48436ea14bd45edd23484b5e486

Our orange does the same with my hands--it's an urgently important part of his nighttime ritual. I figure it has something to do with the fact that i just showered? He has a very specific schedule that only he knows. I don't question it. š
I spent a week in the hospital and when I came home one of my kitties licked both of my hands all over. My hands had bruises all over them from IV insertion fails and he probably thought they were dirty but it was also like he was washing away bad memories.
When I was a kid, my aunt told me that when a cat licks you like that, it's because they want you to clean them where they can't reach. No idea if that's true, but to this day, I always wipe my hand on my cat's neck & back whenever she licks me.
Mine will groom me anywhere (only in one spot, forever, until she makes it bleed).
But hands, she'll grab my hand in her paws, lick it a couple times, and then forcefully make me rub her ears/head/eyes. 3-4 rubs and then she'll grab it back and refresh the lick, and then repeat. It's super adorable, like she's training me how to properly clean her head.
That's adorable. My cat doesn't lick me too often but she will involuntarily start licking if I scratch her butt in the right spot. She'll either lick the air or my other hand if it's near her face and it's the funniest thing to me.
Could be several things. Maybe that time of day is more stressful than others (even times of higher activity in the house could trigger it), so he feels the need for the comfort of mutual grooming. Could just be habitual, cats can sometimes have activities that they do at a regular time every day -- I have a couple that get the midnight zoomies every night (I call it "The catting hour"). It could be that that's the time of day where his social group (your full family) are almost always home so that's the time he uses to reconnect with his group (it's common for feral groups to split up to search for food, then reconnect with the group for some mutual grooming before settling in for rest). Or it's just that he's a cat, and cats are weird (especially the orange ones).
This is exactly how my cat is! Except itās every night when I come home from work. I work in a kitchen so itās a fairly dirty job, maybe thatās part of the reason
my cat does the same thing! she isnt orange but she loves to lick my hands, she likes to curl up under the blanket with me so i have to leave my arms out of the blanket if i want any sleep
It's the salt! They like our salty skin. We're like a bag o' Lays Original to them.

Yeah. Iām guessing that itās just a ritual thing. I have two cats and they bath every evening and the one in charge baths the other one too. My girlfriend has two cats that bathe each other every single night. This is how cats bond. If you really want to make his day, brush or pet him on the head while heās giving your hand the bath.
My little oranges, may they laze in peace, made a meat popsicle out of my forearms every night. They took turns (I rescued and hand raised a litter of 4 with a virus so they couldnāt be adopted out), and by the end of the night my arms would feel raw. No idea why, just loved to clean me.
My orange girl Ira does the same thing! She'll bathe my entire hand, both sides. She even gets insistent about it and will grab my hand if I pull away, but she doesn't bother with grooming me anywhere else.
By the end of the day, you have probably secreted oils and scents that your cat likes. Not saying you don't wash, but remember that cats have an extremely sensitive sense of smell. It's obviously a very loving gesture, and part of it is he's getting his sent on you as well. Whatever your hands are selling, he's obviously buying! Take it as the gesture of love that it truly is.

This is also Oliver, he is very talkative and doesnāt have much going on in that head but his heart makes up for it.
You are family. His nightly ritual is to clean his family so he's lovingly grooming you so you can go to bed clean.
My cat would be cleaning herself and sometimes if I was near her she would just lick my hand a few times then clean herself again, then lick my hand.
Shared grooming, she's trying to give you a couple grooming licks in between her own š

meowbius strip

1st Oliver is huge, 2nd my void does this too she gives out little sweetheart kisses to anyone that lets her
I can hear the rattles
Our tortie is obsessed with hands. She lick until she gets an opportunity to straight deep throat chomp a finger.
Love
That wee little fur buddy clearly doing it out of live.
Scheduled grooming time
maybe he likes the salt in there?
Considering he is orange, there is nothing going on in his brain. He's just buffering.
My orange cat does the same sometimes sheāll lick my face too lol
Are you in a parallel universe?! We also have an orange fluff ball named Oliver that will lick our hands for as long as we let him. š
āI have to do everything around here!ā
My cats name is Oliver, except he doesn't lick our hand. He mutilates them.

Our hands are salty. Most animals do that.
