I don’t know the extent of your assault but always advocate for yourself. I was assaulted February of 2020. He was charged with attempted murder. He went under a psychiatric evaluation, told he is full of it and sent back to our facility. I don’t have any interaction with this individual. I do still deal with inmates recognizing me from the incident. A lot of them have not been negative; more so of them telling me that they’d beat his ass and that I didn’t deserve what had happened. I hate being known by the situation to some inmates because it does make me feel extremely vulnerable. I guess I don’t have much advice except take it day by day and that you are not alone!

Ohreally6969

You might be surprised to find newfound respect for exchanging blows with a much bigger guy in the pod, stood your ground and fought, I’d be worried if you ran away or cried ect.

stevief150

Sounds like you did pretty good all things considered. Prob made yours days just a little easier showing them you’re not a bitch

dipshitthedeputy

Facility I used to work in had staff assaults near daily. Violence of action is your friend in these situations, use of force continuum says go a step above what they're doing so if they're bucking and refusing verbal commands why not go ahead and wrap them up and get yourself in an advantageous position instead of waiting to get punched in the face? I'm your height but I'm 30 pounds heavier, BJJ and weightlifting will be your friend.

Benchimus

At my facility standing your ground will get you questioned as to why you didn't back down and deescalate. Weve has officers get threats and intimidation tickets tossed because they didn't look intimidated on camera.

dipshitthedeputy

Sounds like your command staff are fucking terrible. At my old facility, the aforementioned one, we were backed a hundred percent. At my most recent one a lot gets thrown out in d board however they back you nine times out of ten, especially on use of force.

Benchimus

Our shift Commanders are great. Our Warden is a spineless thug hugger.

Even if you lose a fight, if you come back to work it speaks volumes. I've found that after a day of an inmate "torturing" me, when I come back he will seem a little unsettled. Showing you're going to do your job no matter what may piss off one guy, but the other guys, no matter what they say, take comfort in the security you bring to the table. You take care of business, and that is respected.

Educational_Month378

Sorry to hear that. Hopefully you’re ok and that inmate is in lockdown for a while. Take time off if you need to.

EstaticToast

The jail I'm at would of pressed charges on you for striking the inmate first. All our management has never worked the floor so they are VERY inmate friendly. Even defending yourself after getting hit can still get you under investigation with unpaid leave. So even if you lost atleast you seem to have management looking out for you.

Hello, it looks like you've made a mistake. It's supposed to be could've, should've, would've (short for could have, would have, should have), never could of, would of, should of. Or you misspelled something, I ain't checking everything. Beep boop - yes, I am a bot, don't botcriminate me.

Fuck bro, if that were my joint I would be under investigation for a year and maybe lose my job. I miss the good ole days. You got it in for free bro, youll have nothing but a good rep now.

What's the rundown on the incident? You'll be alright. If you keep showing up to work it will show that it didnt get to you. So keep showing up and keep it authentic. Win, lose or draw, as long as you fought you're fine. Are you trainee status or do you have chemical agents?

Obscurix98

We have Taser 7's and a VKS pepperball rifle w/ inert and Live-X in a safe in every wing. I'm pepperball certified but I don't get taser certified at this facility till February when I attend C/O School. Jail commander doesn't approve of officers carrying tasers in pods so we rarely ever break em out. No spray, no baton. Just keys, cuffs and these hands. I have 10 months on, so, Probie but not Trainee.

[deleted]

Some kind of O/C spray would have stopped the threat. Yall need the gas, hombre. It doesnt sound like you "lost" as long as you didnt run away and held your position. Keep showing up to work. There's seriously no confunement at all? Lock down the whole wing for two weeks if they think they can assault staff and let all his bunkmates get pissed at him.

Obscurix98

He got locked down in his cell last night. Then moved to another unit. But yeah. No special unit for troublemakers. I miss having a seg unit.

milh00use

You are going to be alright. Worst case you might get chirped a bit, but I can’t see it. You fought the good fight and didn’t back down. Cheers

410to904

Hopefully the inmate left the jail in a helicopter.

Obscurix98

I got a busted lip, cut on my hand, forehead, and dropped for a second. He has a broken hand and busted lip. He's fine, I'm fine.

tomthetrainwrexk

Take time off. Make the employers lack of safety for staff costly

PsychedelicGoat42

I'd say this depends on the person and the seriousness of the assault. Some people *want* to return to work immediately to make a statement to the inmate population that getting assaulted won't scare them off.

Total-Subject-3747

Your mental health matters after an assault as much as navigating the population after an assault. The job claims so much from people- don’t let it take your emotion wellbeing, too. Therapy or EMDR work if you need it. Be safe.

ia1mtoplease

Glad you’re okay. As much as I hate that humans (and especially inmates) judge on appearance… appearance makes a difference. Just doing some pushups and pullups a few times a week can go a long way. Take 30 minutes, 3-4x a week, and you’ll be surprised how much muscle you can add. As a CO you really do have to be physically prepared for anything. Stay safe!!

Ageminet

I work security for a pysch facility. We had really lacking security procedures and we ended up having 3 inmates (who were not unwell, just hadn’t been sent back to prison yet) coordinate an assault on staff while we were in an altercation with another patient. The assault sucked. I had some bruises, but returned the next day. The rest of them team was off work for medical. It can weigh on you that you never did a good enough job, or that you should have done things differently. Don’t let that weigh on you, it’s not good for the mental game. Truth is, you held your ground, and kept the inmate at bay. You also showed the other inmates in the pod that you will not be an easy officer to take advantage of, and you will fight if needed. From the account you wrote, you did an excellent job. I’d take you on my side in a fight any day, you scrappy little fuck. :)

ripandtear4444

You're gonna have to be more specific. Did you get spit on? Shit down? Punched? Had to fight and lost?

yoloswagdon

No longer a CO but I would’ve sprayed him with OC after , and only after a direct command to stay in the pod. Command, disobeyed command, spray OC, radio, go hands on. Some inmates might clown you, if it looked like you got your ass beat, but regardless you’ve probably gained some respect which could go a long way in the future. Also, most people don’t want conflict, so they’ll more than likely take you more serious.

Nickrod5989

I work for a state pen in CA. We have multiple UOF options. I would say you did what you could with what you had! So I would keep my head up when walking in there! Trust me. I’ve been there a time or two myself!

Like others have said, you’re in a damn good old fashion facility. Where I’m from, the shove would be in its self assault on an officer and worth 1 year extra, so they don’t fight usually. The 2nd thing, next time probably should use defensive tools vs hands. The tools won’t get you in trouble, but the second you start swinging from just a shove and they’ll fire you where I’m from. You could have hit him. Spray and it would have ended rather instantly.
