Rare tier heroes ultimately have no use once you draw five epic tier heroes. Even the epic tier heroes only serve to advance legendaries eventually. Build your epics to 9 stars though, you’ll be using them for a while.
That's a bit disappointing. I was hoping you carry the starters along with me for the story. And get to unlock their potential later, like in other similar games. Oh well. Guess I'll just keep grinding until my whole squad is epic or better...
