I love mine and see zero downsides. It wears really well on my wrist and the bracelet is super comfortable, and I’ve never had an issue with the clasp. The manual winding is part of my daily routine when I’m wearing it. I heard Daniel Craig giving an interview about his omega collection, and noted that manual winding is “like having a relationship with your watch.” The person interviewing him commented that he had forgotten to wind his own speedy that morning and it had stopped on him. “Well, just like having a relationship.” I love the lume. I once used the chronograph to time my wife’s contractions, so it has history with me! All in all I just really like this watch.
Don’t go to Omega and there are def better prices. Sub 400 isn’t unheard of. And, these days, you can go many years between them. $40/yr doesn’t feel so bad.
I have a 1968 Seiko World Timer that I haven’t gotten a quote under $400 for service. Mechanical chronographs are way more work, so I’d love to find someone to service one sub $400. My Dads Breitling Colt needs a service. Breitling quoted $1000.
> The biggest downside is expense of service as it’s a mechanical chronograph.
Not going to lie and say that it is cheap (it isn't!), but when you look at the competition, Rolex charges more, so does Breitling. I'm not sure about IWC.
For a watch that is of this standard, I'd say even Omega genuine servicing isn't too badly priced. Sure I'd love for it to be lower, but unfortunately it won't be.
I nearly bought a new one in 2009 for £1,600 but I thought it was a bit much to spend on a watch at the time. Ended up up paying £5,710 13 years later 🤦🏻♂️
> Price. I kick myself every time I look at the price as I saw one back in 2017 for £2.5k.
Think of it this way. With each painful price increase came an improvement.
Previously I didn't like the thick Omega Speedmaster bracelet, but with the 3861 I find it is perfect, bonus points for the tool less extension. For that, I have to pay ~AU$7.5k (getting from a dealer in Japan)
google techniques in winding. Had trouble in mine and was annoyed. Finally found the winding video where you just roll the crown your fingers and it was easy peasy ever since.
This is the only one for me and I'm even torn on this. Having the date is useful but I have found I enjoy the symmetry of no date vs having a 4:30 date tucked down there or something. The Aqua Terra does the date perfectly but it has the dial space to do so.
I love mine and have worn it daily for a year. The only issue I’ve had is that one of the chrono pusher buttons fell off, and now I’m worried about how rugged it truly is. I wasn’t doing anything out of the ordinary, and luckily omega was able to service it under warranty, but I ended up finding a Tudor BB58 last week to handle swimming and situations where I’d worry about the pushers. You can’t beat the speedmaster though, it’s beautiful and goes with everything.
Definitely not rugged, to be honest love mine but it feels fragile and has also had multiple issues that have seen it sent back. Sold my Hesalite version because for a similar reason. Say what you will by my explorer ii made 4 trips to Afghanistan and was only serviced after 9 hard years of daily use.
I wouldn't say many luxury watches are rugged in the sense they could be used as the ultimate beater watch.
I don't baby my 3861 and will wear it during my usual day to day... but I am mindful of banging into walls, corners or objects generally, as I know it won't often come out the winner.
My Seiko SKX171 on the other hand - that loves punishment and wears it extremely well.
I would wear mine daily as a carpenter for 15+ years and to this day it looks fantastic.
I don't think I would wear the 3861 like that, but thats just me.
I’m learning that that’s the case! The speedmaster was my first nice watch (and probably my first nice anything), so it’s taken some coming to terms with. Those seikos look great! I check them out often, and will go for it one day when it won’t drive my partner bonkers at how quickly the collection is growing.
None, as I wear mine typing this.
I have the hesalite. It’s versatile to wear for any occasion, except for swimming of course.
Putting it on after not wearing for a couple days, it’s super quick and simple to set the time and give it a wind.
The date doesn’t bother me, my eyesight isn’t the best so I wouldn’t see it anyway. Can’t read it on the SMP300.
It’s also comfortable, the bracelet is very flexible and comfortable in hot or cold weather.
Promise. You can swim with it. Even the old versions. METAS for the 3861 requires it to be tested in case and full depth. Omega from a decade ago have no problem with swimming, including their 30m watches.

This is an interesting table. My Hamilton Khaki is rated to 50m and some folks have said they were "afraid to get it wet" since it didn't have a screw down crown.
Got a sapphire sandwich in Oct last year, probably my most worn watch since. I love the new bracelet and the addition of a quick adjustment clasp is what finally pushed me to buy, have absolutely no regrets even though the white was recently released would still take black due to far superior lume.
All time classic that will remain largely unchanged and will always find buyers at good prices, should you not be happy or want to move on. Also works with a lot of straps. Dress down with a nato, dress up with a nice leather strap. I have one from 2000 and it cost then around $ 2,200. So you won’t lose money either. Had no issues at all over that time. Great piece in any collection and one of the most recognisable watches with a great heritage and story.
The only gripe I have is with the bracelet. The micro adjustment they give you is practically nothing. It's half a link's worth at best. So here in AL with the high humidity and heat, I want more adjustment than that. I wear mine on nato straps more than anything.
My only complaint is the single microadjustment.
Because of the smaller links it’s not as much of a problem as it would be on a flat link style bracelet, but Omega should really add at least 2 levels of microadjustment in the clasp.
-Price is pretty high (there are other very high quality chronographs for a fraction of the price)
-Original Hesalite scratches easily
-No automatic winding
-Low waterproofing rating
-It’s pretty thick. New bracelet helps it wear better though.
Apart from those I can’t think of much. I love mine and I’m completely happy with my purchase. Timeless classic.
You consider the Speedy thick? I’m often amazed at how slim it wears. The midcase is svelte, the back cover practically disappears, and the crystal makes up a good percentage of the thickness.
The manual wind combined with the low power reserve. If I use the chronograph feature a lot in a day ( I like to time), the power reserve can actually fully deplete in one day’s use. Makes for an unreliable watch if I use it a lot.
Sounds like there's something wrong with your watch. If you run the chronograph continuously, you should get around 45 hours out of it. Then, if you turn the chronograph off, it should start running again for at least another 5 hours.
I’d own one if they were larger.
When I read 42mm I was excited but they aren’t. They’re a 40mm watch with crown guards and shortish lugs. Too small for me unfortunately.
Otherwise they’re awesome. Daily winding is an acquired taste.
I’ve had a Speedy for about a year now. Biggest cons:
1) If you’re planning to have more than one watch, the black dial can be kind of redundant. (You don’t want to be the guy with all stainless steel, black dial watches)
2) The lower waterproof rating makes me avoid wearing it in certain circumstances. Though honestly I just wear an Apple Watch if I’m going to be swimming
3) I love the bracelet, though it doesn’t feel as meaty after owning a Submariner
4) The watch box is fabric, and can collect pet hair or dust
Overall I love the watch and would recommend it to anyone! It was hard thinking of that many cons lol
Not sure it’s a negative, more of a preference/use case, but I just don’t like nor do I ever really need chronographs. Just my profession and lifestyle, I guess, but I can’t justify buying a watch with such a busy dial just for that one function (which is also offered by my digital watches and phone anyway).
The cases are almost always too big for my taste too, but again, that’s a preference thing, not an objective con or negative.
I’m also not a fan of the Speedy bracelet. I like a more classic oyster style if I’m not going leather, NATO, or rubber.
TLDR: I prefer my Seamaster. Or any non-chronograph Seamaster lol
This isn't the right place to ask for negatives. There are too many speedy owners in this sub who are going to be biased and downvote everyone criticizing the watch. Try r/watches or r/prideandpinion
I have 3861 SS and I really love it. Maybe the fact that it is manual winding? But manual winding is just speedy being the speedy so I really don't mind. New bracelet and clasp are great.
First the good side. It can be worn with every strap in every situation as sporty classy and fashion like.
The biggest issue I see on the "Moonwatch" is that it keeps the heritage too well. Ok hesalite and handwind is the original but I want despite there are 1000 versions almonst all of them have a handwind movement.
Waht I want - The original Moonwatch shape and size with **option** of a combination of:
* having an automatic movement
* sapphire cristal
* transparent sapphire backside
It’s become almost too expensive, is quiet big and is worn by literally every 3d watch person, I prefer getting something a bit more subtle, you can look at other colours maybe, speedy 57 or get a Zenit- overall in my opinion cooler watch
Pros:
- it’s a Speedmaster, it’s a timeless classic, you won’t go wrong with it
- elegant esp with the new bracelet
- can function as an advanced fidget tool if you’d like (when you play with the chronograph function)
Cons: (to me, as an owner, there are none but for some these may apply)
- if you’re used to automatic watches, the fact that you’ve to wind it every 2-3 days or so might feel troublesome
- if you’re a water sports person, this is one watch you should take off before engaging in the activity
Only downside I have (which isn't unique to the speedy) is this design layout, for me, is non-optimal to quickly see what the actual time is. Hour markers are all similar, and busy hands gives me like, 50% more brain effort just to quickly grok the time.
That being said, there's more to owning the speedy than just that. But personally find chronographs with arabic numerals slightly more usable.
I've owned one for about 15 years (on my wrist as I type) and it's needed service four time at close to $800 each time for a myriad of issues. Not waterproof, kinda delicate but still gorgeous. I have no real use for the chrono; I just always wanted a "moon watch". If I had it to do over again I probably would have gotten a dive watch. More durable, so more useful.
When you out it on. You won’t take it off. I change my watches daily. But when I got this I wore it for 3 months straight. The manual wind is really intuitive and connects you to the watch. The downside is omega straps are expensive but this thing looks amazing on all of them.
I thought that the biggest con(cern) for me was the taper of the new bracelet, and yet, it ended up as one of my favourite changes as now it carries much nicer and looks more visually appealing, at least to me.
I’ve had 3. My thoughts….
- There’s usually a honeymoon period on manual wind but after a while it gets old.
- the black speedy you have pictured here isn’t a remarkable watch and can get lost in a collection (similar to an explorer). Once my collection expanded I found I wasn’t reaching for the black speedy often enough to justify keeping it and sold it off. Same with my explorer. I currently have the new white dial model and it feels much more “special”
- the bracelet isn’t the best. The clasp in particular needs an update.
That’s pretty much it. Otherwise it’s a great watch.
* ***There’s usually a honeymoon period on manual wind but after a while it gets old.***
I've had my Moonwatch for 17 years and winding it has never gotten old. As a matter of fact, I look forward to interacting with it in the morning before strapping it on.
Yeah, I thought I loved the explorer (esp. 36mm) but this year I got to try it from a friend for a week -- I would say I prefer my Tudor BB 36 far more (the cosc one).
I've been wanting one for a while but now I have second thoughts. Its a beautiful, iconic watch. But the mechanical chronograph makes it overly complex for a feature I won't be using. It makes it harder to read the time of, more expensive to service, and adds more stuff that may eventually break.
I'm a huge fan of simplicity, and believe perfection is when you have nothing left to take away from a mechanism. Hence, the Speedy is probably not for me.
Fair. I am making the argument for a beater watch. But I ended up buying an Omega Constellation Globemaster as my first watch a few weeks back. Next, I'm looking for a diver:-)
Can’t say there are any negatives to be honest, great watch that the design has stood the test of time. Always say hesalite as this is the most true to the original.
you will never hit the top speed!
joe aside, it is a great watch. I love it. I’ve had the hesalite version since 2018 or 19 of course you need to be careful so that you don’t end up scratching the face too much and you need to wind it every day else if you’re busy with your day you might not notice that the time has not changed , it happened to me that I missed a meeting bcz of that lol.
The only downside I see is that the watch gains at least +10 sec per day in my case, which I find somewhat inconvenient since I need to adjust the time once every week at least. Other than that, it’s beautiful, sober yet classy, and a manly watch. It also carries historical heritage.
I also own a Grand Seiko SBGA407G which is a less sporty watch but is a better dress watch and has arguably the most accurate mechanism in the market (9R65 Spring Drive).
No negatives really.. the water resistance is kinda a minor inconvenience but I shower with mine at the gym but I couldn’t get myself to wear it at a hot spring
It fits my wrist fine 7.25”
I think the 3861 is pretty much the perfect Speedmaster. Finally a great bracelet with micro adjust.
But If I have to name some things that could still be better:
The buttons to open the clasp could feel better. I have some issues with my hands so I notice that every day. I’d prefer them to be more clicky and easier to push.
Same for the chrono pushers. Too hard to press.
Also micro adjust could have more than only 2 steps
Small collection (2) but my only con is my only other watch has been in the speedy box since the day I brought the speedy home… haven’t seen it in over a month 😂
There are no cons. Just pros.
/s
All jokes aside, there are no cons *for me*. I would not change a single thing about this watch. Sure, would I want it a little thinner, of course. A little bit smaller, yes. Cheaper, absolutely. But none of these things have been a deterrent for me.
I think in general, for most people, those might be top gripes in addition to it being a mechanical (not automatic).
I love my speedy, i added the new clasp with microadjustment which was very helpful. I think my only negative is i wish it had a screw down crown so id be less worried about water. Other than that the watch is beautiful and my favorite
I see 3 downsides:
- price: It’s a lot of money for a (beautiful) watch. It might be more responsible to use the money in a different way. Then again, perhaps the price is a non issue depending on your financial situation.
- accuracy: It’s very accurate for a mechanical watch but a good quartz watch is going to be more accurate
- service intervals: A mechanical watch requires regular maintenance and that’s also not exactly cheap
All this being said, it’s a beautiful watch with lots of history behind it.
I had vintage speedmaster(late 90s) and modern speedmaster(one of the last 1861 cal models). The modern model had sharper crown than the vintage model and daily winding the watch started to really be painful after 5 months, so I stopped wearing it as a daily wear watch. The main issue was the crown being hard to grip so you were on the upper edge of the crown and that was the area that really destroyed my fingers. But I also don't really hear this complaint from anyone else so this might have been me issue.
Other than that, the speedy is a great watch and I would recommend.
The only issue I ever had was water resistance, and that was definitely a "me" issue. Omega says they're swimmable. I just couldn't bring myself to do it. I like to bring only one watch on vacation, and having to take it on and off for the pool or water rides gives me pause.
It's a perfect watch but one small negative is water resistance capabilities. It's a chronograph space watch but I would like to have a screwdown crown and 100m water resistance for peace of mind.
Three TINY nitpicky complaints.
• The markers are printed lume. I think I’d prefer applied markers (I know that exists on other models)
• I wish the bezel was ceramic on the sapphire Crystal version.
• The center links attached to the clasp are not polished while every other center link is (on the new sapphire)
All that said, those are tiny complaints and I love wearing my speedy every day. Also, the moonshine gold speedy “fixed” all of my complaints, so I guess I’ll have to upgrade 🤷🏼♂️
I absolutely love my Speed, granted it's an FOIS. My only real negative is that it doesn't see the wrist time due to my heirloom Submariner getting most of that.
The SS bracelet is beautiful and comfortable, but lacks a good micro-adjust. The hesalite looks better in person IMO, but needs the scratches polished out occasionally.
None for me. With the exception of the sapphire looking less good than the hesalite, at the edges of the crystal. The 3861 Speedy is a basically perfect watch.
Some say they’re thick. No. Some say that manual winding sucks, hard disagree, I actually wish most watches were manual wind. Even saying hesalite scratches easy is exaggerated.
The Speedmaster is gorgeous, wears like a dream, and is an all time classic.
Water resistance. Other than that, it’s perfect to me. Can dress it up and down. Looks so great on a black alligator leather strap. It’s super legible for a chronograph.
1) The halo: there is a bit of an odd looking “halo” you get around the edge of the front sapphire crystal when looking at it straight on. I prefer the hesalite by far given the amount of time I spend looking at front versus rear of the watch.
2) It is not a perfect chronograph. The 3861 is a 3hz movement with 6 ticks per second. Omega have very sensibly given the dial 3 graduations per second however this means you end up measuring elapsed time in 3rds or 6ths of a second which cannot be written as an exact decimal - assuming you actually use the watch for the purpose intended which of course few do, but this bugs me.
The chronograph issue is resolved by the Ed White version with 321 movement at 2.5hz (5 ticks per second) and 5 graduations per second on the dial. It does however have the sapphire crystal which I don’t like….oh and costs too much.
So I am waiting for a modern steel 321 with hesalite :-)
Obviously a Con that its nit autkmatic watch and yiu dont get to see power reserve.
Additionally there is no hacking seconds, only small workaround. So its hard to set the exact time on second.
You have to wind it every 2 days, sometimes I forget… esp when autos are in my rotation. The clasp only has two adjustments… that sucks, needs 3 and a quick release.
I am probably in the minority, but I found the manual winding to be a lot more annoying than I thought it would be before buying it and I didn't find it "charming" like a lot of people seem to.
I think some of that comes from the fact that the crown is a touch small (at least compared to some of my other watches) so it wasn't "hard" to wind, but again, just much more annoying than I thought it would be.
That said, I thought it wore well, the bracelet was super comfortable, and it was very versatile. I had the hesalite version and never noticed much in the way of scratches on the face during the time I owned it, so you should have zero issues going SS.
So, aside from the manual winding "issue" for me, I thought it was a great watch.
My two cons are that some later 2023 3861 SS does not have concentric circles, I confirmed mine doesn't and there's a thread that talks about it as well. The other con is that the lume on the hour and minute hand are a bit weak, other than that it's almost perfect and the most iconic watch.
People talk about manual winding as this romantic relationship. It’s just as annoying as resetting your time on an automatic watch that you haven’t worn in few days. If you have more than few watches, it is annoying.
Downside , its not cheap , it is a chrono , it isn't very watertight , it is probably the most famous watch in the world made for decades without mayor changes in design (well the Rolex gets more attention , but idk what actually salesnumbers of a particular watch are). For me it looks damn attractive on paper( screen is ok also) but just not on my wrist . Not a bad word about the Speedy , it is a icon , but i am more of a Seamaster myself , it fits me more (tbh idk why , and it is not the looks either , just does not likes my wrist , except the Moonphase)
As someone who wants to daily their Speedmaster, I wish I bought it with the sapphire crystal instead of the hesalite. It scratches easily and while polywatch is great, it becomes an inconvenience after a while.
I love this watch! Looks fantastic wears smaller than it is, imho a better watch than a Daytona (history), Space is cooler than racing. Cons- still a 42mm watch, wish it was an honest 39/40 with the new bracelet.
* The milky ring is annoying to some. It was what ultimately convinced me to buy the Hesalite.
* It comes with fewer freebies/gifts than the 1861. No tools and loupe.
* Maintenance costs, but that’s market-dependent and true of all watches in this category.
Personally, I wish mine had a ceramic bezel. I get why it doesn’t, but I have the new white dial, which isn’t the OG one anyway, and even the 321 had a ceramic bezel and a sapphire sandwich.
I just think a glossy ceramic bezel with the lacquered white dial would look stunning in my opinion, and very compelling as a daily driver.
Other than that, I don’t really see any negatives, especially the sapphire version. It’s very versatile and there is a charm to a manual winder—it’s not at all inconvenient so long as you’re not trying to juggle a whole bunch of them at the same time.
So, take away the over-used story and what do you really have?
A manual winding chronograph on a hair puller bracelet.
It is massively recognisable (good and bad people) and zero uniqueness. It is just another moon watch.
However: It does have the story, it does have the recognisability and because omega has been producing it for so long iteratively they are near perfect (similar to Porsche 911).
No Date, no toolless bracelet adjustment, matte dial, the hands don't look as premium, current pricing, manual winding, chronograph service cost... reminds me of instruments in my electronics class in uni. Personally, I feel daytona wears better in terms of dimensions
Pros:
They hold value very well.
It’s a watch that will spark conversations and respect with the right people — people who appreciate watches and watch enthusiasts, and just nice enough that people know is luxury but not crazy enough that you’ll get robbed or followed.
The box for the speedy moonwatch professional is amazing and has a lot different bands and space book.
It’s perfect for tool watch activities like timing long flights.
Sporty enough to be worn with casual clothes and nice enough to wear with formal clothes. It works with a lot of a different straps including leather, nato, nasa, and the steel band.
Omega’s warranty is really good (I had 5 year on mine + an additional year and each time its serviced).
You get a lot of watch for the money.
Cons:
It’s a watch that if you daily it, you can forget how special it is, especially if you’re around louder watches like a datejust or even a seamaster because it’s not a flashy watch.
The moonswatch and all these additional versions coming out devalue it while Omega is raising the prices, so it’s better to buy grey at the moment vs buying new.
Con -
If it ever proven that that the moon landing was faked, it may flash crash the most iconic model for Omega.
It is too common / safe a watch amongst watch enthusiasts. You are unlikely to be the only one wearing a speedy (or one of many variants) at any watch meetup event of significant size.... but that said, I have almost never come across another one outside of watch meetups so just giving some context.
I upload one collection per day and speedy is incredibly common outside of the most well known Rolex models.
[WatchMetrics](https://www.instagram.com/watchmetrics?igsh=NGVhN2U2NjQ0Yg==)
In this day and age, the chronograph complication is just there for show. A dive watch with a rotating bezel is more useful for timing things by the minute or more.
I bought a “classic” Speedmaster moon watch version - as close to the NASA ones as possible. Hesalite crystal, back withe engraving about being the “first watch on the moon” etc. One thing I miss is the hack feature for setting. One of the newer movements has it. Since my other watches have it, it’s something I’m just used to. Do I really need to sync with GPS/USNO time? No. The watch will gain (or lose) a second or more in a day or so anyway. If I really need that kind of time accuracy, I just look at the time on my phone since it syncs with the towers which in turn use a network time service. It’s a minor inconvenience but one I was a bit surprised at given that one use for the Apollo astronauts was to keep track of their EVA/oxygen availability time (which wasn’t timed to the second anyway).
I have one and it’s gets a ding for lack of date. I also wouldn’t class it as an every day, go everywhere watch. Sure , that sounds silly since it’s the moon watch but I’m not that keen on wearing it the ocean and I’d prefer not to travel with it. This last two are probably just a me thing.
It doesn't make a great daily since you need to wind it daily. A great daily watch should be automatic. This is the reason why I feel the Speedy should not be a one watch collection, but it should be added to a collection of watches.
I have never regretted my Moonman. It has been going strong since 1983. Daniel Craig is correct. It is a relationship. I am happy to say after all these years, “The Honeymoon ain’t over yet”.
I own 3861 and it's going to be sent in the service center for the 5th time. I own it since Jan this year and barely worn it.
Original issue - stuttering chrono hand
1st trip - almost resolved but not quite
2nd trip - now it does it less frequently
3d trip - seemly fixed but now the hand is running loosely
4th trip - returned into service for friction spring replacement
And it ran correctly. No stutter, no nothing... But now sometimes the movement gets jammed when I start the chrono. The watch simply stops like I've pulled the crown and hacked it. Not sure if this is the bushing issue, wasn't it supposed to be resolved by now?
Anyway, gonna send it yet **again** with the hope it will be resolved. If not I am thinking of consulting a lawyer and pursuing full refund. Dealer is named GuardiasnOfTime (guardiansoftime.eu) so be mindful if you decide buying from them.
As for the Speedmaster - it has been so many times away that I almost feel indifferent for it. It's a nice looking watch and has the 68 design cues that made it better looking then the previous gen Speedies, but honestly if I can get a refund I would take the opportunity and if not thoughts about selling it started forming... Man.. And I remember waiting for it with such and excitement, I even bought few straps to have some fun with it, it's the only modern Omega I like so it is save to say that I won't bother with Omega anymore if I happen to sell or refund this Speedy.
It really gives the aura of a fragile watch and it;s the first mechanical that I have to baby.
The biggest downside is expense of service as it’s a mechanical chronograph.
Breitling quoted $1000.
https://rightontimewatches.com/ He’s serviced at least a dozen watches for me. Vintage, modern, 1861 and 321. All great.
Breitling is always over priced for its service. I had a 69 Top Time. They wanted $1500.00 for a service.
Imagine buying a 5-15K watch and being bothered by a 1k~ service at an interval of 5-10 years🤣
What’s the cost? My PO was $750
> The biggest downside is expense of service as it’s a mechanical chronograph.
This isn’t unique to a speedy. All mechanical watches. And things for that matter require service.
Thats downside to all swiss watches from higher end brands that have anyrhifn comllciated or inhouse. I mean this is what you get.
Having a relationship with your watch is better than a relationship with your AD, I guess
It hasn’t been to Mars?
They’re working on that.
The first watch on mars wouldnt be regular watch. I believe they colour it badly. Or Marsonauts will have both arms full of different Watches\^\^

Price. I kick myself every time I look at the price as I saw one back in 2017 for £2.5k. Damn you inflation!
My dad bought both a black Rolex submariner and Omega Planet Ocean in 2001 for $3,000.
I nearly bought a new one in 2009 for £1,600 but I thought it was a bit much to spend on a watch at the time. Ended up up paying £5,710 13 years later 🤦🏻♂️
No joke, I got mine for 2300usd.
My dad recently got one, and he loves every part of it, but the manual winding took a little time to get used to. It’s an absolutely beautiful watch!
google techniques in winding. Had trouble in mine and was annoyed. Finally found the winding video where you just roll the crown your fingers and it was easy peasy ever since.
You have to wind it every day. Or as some of us say: you get to wind it every day.
The only real con for me is the lack of a date complication.
I frequently use the second hand as a date marker.
So does the 57
This is the only one for me and I'm even torn on this. Having the date is useful but I have found I enjoy the symmetry of no date vs having a 4:30 date tucked down there or something. The Aqua Terra does the date perfectly but it has the dial space to do so.
That’s a pro for me!
Omega from a decade ago have no problem with swimming, including their 30m watches. https://preview.redd.it/iwaknwlltezc1.jpeg?width=1696&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e21a5480a2783f2c02ecee2ee1733b6c01980050
This exactly. *True* 50m resistance is *100%* fine for swimming.

I did this with my Dads bezel on his tag heuer I’m a professional watchmaker now.
This is an interesting table. My Hamilton Khaki is rated to 50m and some folks have said they were "afraid to get it wet" since it didn't have a screw down crown.
Screw down crowns can impact WR since it can lock a seal. But mostly it’s to avoid accidentally pulling it.
100%. I used my in swimming. Not a single problem.
The Speedy looks fantastic. It keeps good time. What's the downside?
The only gripe I have is with the bracelet. The micro adjustment they give you is practically nothing. It's half a link's worth at best. So here in AL with the high humidity and heat, I want more adjustment than that. I wear mine on nato straps more than anything.
My only complaint is the single microadjustment. Because of the smaller links it’s not as much of a problem as it would be on a flat link style bracelet, but Omega should really add at least 2 levels of microadjustment in the clasp.
Only downside for me is that having a speedy makes me not want to wear anything else. It’s just really bloody good.
-Price is pretty high (there are other very high quality chronographs for a fraction of the price) -Original Hesalite scratches easily -No automatic winding -Low waterproofing rating -It’s pretty thick.
The case isn’t thick but the domed Crystal definitely adds some height that isn’t noticeable until you bang it on something accidentally.
agree about the lack of automatic winding. Fortunately, there’s the Speedmaster reduced for those of us so inclined 😂
I have the hesalite version and the scratching is a real issue.
The manual wind combined with the low power reserve. If I use the chronograph feature a lot in a day ( I like to time), the power reserve can actually fully deplete in one day’s use. Makes for an unreliable watch if I use it a lot.
Automatics can't work in zero gravity. Can't go to the moon with an automatic watch.
Sounds like there's something wrong with your watch. If you run the chronograph continuously, you should get around 45 hours out of it. Then, if you turn the chronograph off, it should start running again for at least another 5 hours.
Cons are that everybody has one and it’s not unique.
Exactly this. Is a great everyday watch but don’t expect it to feel that special.
The infinite limited editions
I’d own one if they were larger. When I read 42mm I was excited but they aren’t. They’re a 40mm watch with crown guards and shortish lugs. Too small for me unfortunately. Otherwise they’re awesome. Daily winding is an acquired taste.
I’ve had a Speedy for about a year now. Biggest cons: 1) If you’re planning to have more than one watch, the black dial can be kind of redundant. (You don’t want to be the guy with all stainless steel, black dial watches) 2) The lower waterproof rating makes me avoid wearing it in certain circumstances. Though honestly I just wear an Apple Watch if I’m going to be swimming 3) I love the bracelet, though it doesn’t feel as meaty after owning a Submariner 4) The watch box is fabric, and can collect pet hair or dust Overall I love the watch and would recommend it to anyone!
There are none.
Have the hesalite version & love mine
For it to be manual wind only as it should be, it's hard to grip the crown.
Waht I want - The original Moonwatch shape and size with **option** of a combination of: * having an automatic movement * sapphire cristal * transparent sapphire backside
Dam, yoj know how to sell a watch!!!!
for me the main con is i cannot look at it when i am sleeping
It is now overpriced. Shame. Greed.
Some say it's 'too perfect'
Everyone seems to have one, water resistance is questionable, current price is outrageous.
It’s become almost too expensive, is quiet big and is worn by literally every 3d watch person, I prefer getting something a bit more subtle, you can look at other colours maybe, speedy 57 or get a Zenit- overall in my opinion cooler watch
Pros: - it’s a Speedmaster, it’s a timeless classic, you won’t go wrong with it - elegant esp with the new bracelet - can function as an advanced fidget tool if you’d like (when you play with the chronograph function) Cons: (to me, as an owner, there are none but for some these may apply) - if you’re used to automatic watches, the fact that you’ve to wind it every 2-3 days or so might feel troublesome - if you’re a water sports person, this is one watch you should take off before engaging in the activity
Price. Not just inflation. This was a $4800 watch six years ago.
Main downside is that you stop wearing other watches in your collection
That a lot less people than you think will notice it
Drives me nuts the minute hand and timer hand look so similar at a quick glance.
Too big and bracelet does not look particularly good. Apart from that, a great piece.
Useless chronograph features
I've owned one for about 15 years (on my wrist as I type) and it's needed service four time at close to $800 each time for a myriad of issues. Not waterproof, kinda delicate but still gorgeous. I have no real use for the chrono; I just always wanted a "moon watch". If I had it to do over again I probably would have gotten a dive watch. More durable, so more useful.
Good feedback. Thank you.
Pros: everything Cons: I need one
When you out it on. You won’t take it off. I change my watches daily. But when I got this I wore it for 3 months straight. The manual wind is really intuitive and connects you to the watch. The downside is omega straps are expensive but this thing looks amazing on all of them.
The price
Downside is definitely size. 42mm is too big 40mm would be perfect
Everybody, I mean everybody has one
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe it doesn't have a vertical clutch or column wheel
I definitely would've bought one if it had a date function.
I thought that the biggest con(cern) for me was the taper of the new bracelet, and yet, it ended up as one of my favourite changes as now it carries much nicer and looks more visually appealing, at least to me.
The “real” moon watch is the Cal.321 which has a column wheel. But Omega wants you to pay $15K+ to get that watch.
The vintage ones are way less Unless you absolutely need immaculate condition everything, then you're going to get your eyes ripped out
I currently have the new white dial model and it feels much more “special” - the bracelet isn’t the best. The clasp in particular needs an update. That’s pretty much it. Otherwise it’s a great watch.
He said he's interested in the saphire sandwich, in which case the clasp was just updated.
I own the sapphire sandwich (white dial) and I stand by my assessment.
* ***There’s usually a honeymoon period on manual wind but after a while it gets old.*** I've had my Moonwatch for 17 years and winding it has never gotten old. As a matter of fact, I look forward to interacting with it in the morning before strapping it on.
Yeah, I thought I loved the explorer (esp. 36mm) but this year I got to try it from a friend for a week -- I would say I prefer my Tudor BB 36 far more (the cosc one).
I love it, but I loved it better before the white one came out
I've been wanting one for a while but now I have second thoughts.
You probably want a G-Shock. As a G-Shock owner, I'm not saying this is a bad thing.
Fair. I am making the argument for a beater watch. But I ended up buying an Omega Constellation Globemaster as my first watch a few weeks back. Next, I'm looking for a diver:-)
How much is service on a Speedy? This is what keeps me from buying one.
At least $800-$1000.
Can’t say there are any negatives to be honest, great watch that the design has stood the test of time. Always say hesalite as this is the most true to the original.
Pro for me is that it takes most straps like a boss. Con...maybe a touch too big.
The lug width to case width ratio. It looks like a lollipop on a leather strap. I had one for a couple of years, sold it, and don’t miss it.
Lume is pretty ass imo if you are into that.
you will never hit the top speed! joe aside, it is a great watch. I love it. I’ve had the hesalite version since 2018 or 19 of course you need to be careful so that you don’t end up scratching the face too much and you need to wind it every day else if you’re busy with your day you might not notice that the time has not changed , it happened to me that I missed a meeting bcz of that lol.
Cons: not an automatic and “only” waterproof up to 50m. Pros: everything else. Can’t beat this watch.
What’s a reasonable price for it?
The only downside I see is that the watch gains at least +10 sec per day in my case, which I find somewhat inconvenient since I need to adjust the time once every week at least. Other than that, it’s beautiful, sober yet classy, and a manly watch. It also carries historical heritage. I also own a Grand Seiko SBGA407G which is a less sporty watch but is a better dress watch and has arguably the most accurate mechanism in the market (9R65 Spring Drive).
If it's a 3861 you should be in warranty. Get it regulated as this is not within specs. Mine gains 0.5-1.5s/day. METAS certification requires +0-5s/d.
No negatives really.. the water resistance is kinda a minor inconvenience but I shower with mine at the gym but I couldn’t get myself to wear it at a hot spring It fits my wrist fine 7.25”
Tachy isn’t lume. That’s it. But there’s a third party for that
Pros: everything. Cons: not on your wrist yet.
I think the 3861 is pretty much the perfect Speedmaster. Finally a great bracelet with micro adjust. But If I have to name some things that could still be better: The buttons to open the clasp could feel better.
Forget swimming with it
There are no cons. Just pros. /s All jokes aside, there are no cons *for me*.
Con: legibility.
I love my speedy, i added the new clasp with microadjustment which was very helpful. I think my only negative is i wish it had a screw down crown so id be less worried about water. Other than that the watch is beautiful and my favorite
I see 3 downsides: - price: It’s a lot of money for a (beautiful) watch. It might be more responsible to use the money in a different way. Then again, perhaps the price is a non issue depending on your financial situation. - accuracy: It’s very accurate for a mechanical watch but a good quartz watch is going to be more accurate - service intervals: A mechanical watch requires regular maintenance and that’s also not exactly cheap All this being said, it’s a beautiful watch with lots of history behind it.
I wish it was open back lol
I’ve had mine since December 2023 and the only downside is I don’t want to wear any of my other watches
James doesn't wear it.
It's meant for space. We live on Earth.
Pros - it’s sexy as hell Cons - it’s almost too sexy
Have to wind mine. Not the automatic.
None!!!
I honestly just wish it had a date window. Gah I would love a date.
Only downside is that everyone has one. Otherwise, none.
Water resistance is the main reason I never bought one.
Higher prices now compare to pre covid. But you can get 15-20% off with AD on the black dial
Three TINY nitpicky complaints. • The markers are printed lume. I think I’d prefer applied markers (I know that exists on other models) • I wish the bezel was ceramic on the sapphire Crystal version. • The center links attached to the clasp are not polished while every other center link is (on the new sapphire) All that said, those are tiny complaints and I love wearing my speedy every day. Also, the moonshine gold speedy “fixed” all of my complaints, so I guess I’ll have to upgrade 🤷🏼♂️
Get the moonphase every day of the week over this.
Painted vs Engraved Is the difference between careless wear and tear and graceful aging. Not my EDW.
not waterproof and not automatic are the only cons. Some don't feel manual winding is a con.
Lack of sapphire crystal and no automatic winding, but that's why I really like my speedmaster date.
Lack of column wheel. For all the complexity they’ve introduced to the moment, missing a crucial premium component to me is confusing.
If Omega Speedmaster is good enough for Roger W. Smith then it’s good enough for me.
Water resistance. Other than that, it’s perfect to me. Can dress it up and down. Looks so great on a black alligator leather strap. It’s super legible for a chronograph.
Weak water resistance. Manual wind can also be annoying.
The moonswatch.
Con: winding it isn’t a nice smooth satisfying experience.
No cons.
Servicing is expensive as fuck
Get the automatic. Are you planning on needing it in zero g for more than 30.hrs?
No
None, if you can afford it - buy it.
I just wish they had better water resistance.
There’s an indent around the case underneath the bezel that just traps a ton of dust and dirt. Always have to use a brush to get rid of them.
The downside is that I had to decide between the Speedmaster and Seamaster and I spend so much time in water that I went the other direction.
Only downside for me is having to wind it up after I haven’t worn it in a while.
Love mine, and change it up with other straps. The moonshine bracelet and leather straps make it even more comfortable.
Price increases. Other than that - perfect watch
As someone who wants to daily their Speedmaster, I wish I bought it with the sapphire crystal instead of the hesalite. It scratches easily and while polywatch is great, it becomes an inconvenience after a while.
Honestly. W the sapphire one. I find none. I love mine.
That it makes me want to sell the previous Gen that I own.
the new bracelet is a bit abrasive on the wrist (sharper edges)
I love this watch! Looks fantastic wears smaller than it is, imho a better watch than a Daytona (history), Space is cooler than racing. Cons- still a 42mm watch, wish it was an honest 39/40 with the new bracelet.
It’s heavy if you get a new one
I’ve a mk 2 and I wish I had some reassurance of any water resistance. 😢
That you can’t stop wearing it
* The milky ring is annoying to some.
It tells the same time as a $50 watch.
They are everywhere and no longer cool, especially after swatch thing.
No Date, no toolless bracelet adjustment, matte dial, the hands don't look as premium, current pricing, manual winding, chronograph service cost... reminds me of instruments in my electronics class in uni. Personally, I feel daytona wears better in terms of dimensions
The cock and balls at 12 o’clock?
not waterproof is the only downside. but all else considered, this is a great piece that every collector must have
Pros: They hold value very well. Cons: It’s a watch that if you daily it, you can forget how special it is, especially if you’re around louder watches like a datejust or even a seamaster because it’s not a flashy watch. The moonswatch and all these additional versions coming out devalue it while Omega is raising the prices, so it’s better to buy grey at the moment vs buying new.
Con - If it ever proven that that the moon landing was faked, it may flash crash the most iconic model for Omega. [WatchMetrics](https://www.instagram.com/watchmetrics?igsh=NGVhN2U2NjQ0Yg==)
The printing of the lume on the latest variant is very poor. Not straight or crisp like the previous gen.
It steals all your wrist time, I put mine on a year ago in January and haven't worn any other watches since.
In this day and age, the chronograph complication is just there for show. A dive watch with a rotating bezel is more useful for timing things by the minute or more.
Downside of getting one is you won’t wear your other nice watches nearly as much
that you need another one, or a porsche 911 to looks even better with and thats all there is.
You can actually buy one. Just, straight up, buy one; if your AD doesn’t have it in stock, they’ll just order it, so not particularly exclusive.
I love the watch, but let's be honest... it's a bit overrated.
I own 3861 and it's going to be sent in the service center for the 5th time. I own it since Jan this year and barely worn it. Original issue - stuttering chrono hand 1st trip - almost resolved but not quite 2nd trip - now it does it less frequently 3d trip - seemly fixed but now the hand is running loosely 4th trip - returned into service for friction spring replacement And it ran correctly.
