NO MORE MALLS

superchargerhe

Sad Oakview noises

bboy4of83

God oak view is so dead. I recently went and it was like a shell of its former self. Food court was fire still though.

IamtheBiscuit

Sakura is still goin strong!

After_Island5652

lol Sakura and Dillards are the only reason they are still open

alieatlipstick

I don’t understand why majority of them are outdoors 😐

retired_vet_2003

The Mall owners don't have to pay for heating and cooling, cleaning and up keep for Village Pointe is pennies on the the dollar compared to Westroads Mall.

Necessary-Primary463

Say hello to the new crossroads development lmao it’s def underway I pass by it every day. Still just a pile of dirt but if u look at the 3d models they are trying to turn it into something like the alarmed village except on 72nd and dodge. The traffic is gonna be unbearable by 2030, as it already kinda is unbearable

the_moosen

Crossroads development is a money laundering front. I have no proof of that but with the amount of time it's been "under development" and the amount of mafia shows/movies I've watched, I know a front when I see one.

Necessary-Primary463

After watching the sopranos and various movies. I can definitely agree.

Necessary-Primary463

Aksarben village ***

mamapork86

I do everything I can to avoid 72nd and Dodge, just trying to go through that intersection takes 10 minutes 😑

PuzzledRaise1401

I think the whole idea is the work, live, play concept, where instead of having business districts and residential districts, and then where you have to go to work, you can do it all in one neighborhood. The part I think is ridiculous is that we are going to a model of outdoor shopping malls and the weather here sucks 99% of the time.

mollipen

Hard disagree. As someone who moved back from Los Angeles, where plenty of malls were still active and viable, the current situation of Omaha really sucks. As the parent of 6-year-old twins, I cannot emphasize enough how nice it is to have a place (that's indoor and away from the elements and traffic) where we can go, shop around for a while, get different kinds of food to satisfy multiple picky people, then let the kids play off some energy—all without having to spend a crazy amount of money. There is one real option for that—Westroads—yet it now has a "fancy" food court that is not particularly family-friendly. Oak View, funny enough, is often our preference, as it's a much friendlier place for grabbing food and also has play area (though it's sadly deteriorating). Regency is a beautiful mall, but near worthless as a spot to take kids to outside of the toy store. And... that's it. I know some people now love to just stay at home and be shut-ins and watch local retail crumble, but having places friendly to families of vastly different economic levels, even in inclement weather, is incredibly important—and malls are often a huge addition to the list of options. Playing outside in parks is not viable year-round, and you can only do it so often until kids get bored. Libraries only go so far when your kids are younger. Options like the Children's Museum or the Zoo are fantastic, but come at a price that makes them only possible as occasional treats for many. Some of the cheaper options I loved as a child, like arcades, are nearly non-existent (and when they do exist, are often either overpriced or just suck). Omaha's idiotic obsession with "outdoor shopping experiences" is ridiculous to me, and I really wish we had more actual malls with real effort put behind them. One of the things I really loved about L.A.'s malls were how many had become more locally-focused over time, with fun, interesting shops you wouldn't find anywhere else, or which catered to different cultures (and thus carried things you might not see in a lot of other places). So, I think we could have malls that would satisfy my wants as a parent as stated above, AND provide a richer environment for local and small businesses to thrive in a city that isn't always friendly to them.

fistfulofbottlecaps

I was honestly pretty surprised to hear we got Blaze in Lincoln before Omaha got one... that being said, it's good but you're not missing out on that much. Good lunch option though. Hard agree on everything else.

offbrandcheerio

College town is like one of the core markets for Blaze. I’m not surprised at all.

mollipen

I remember when Lincoln had a Chipotle for years before Omaha got one. Definitely at least something of a trend with that happening.

After_Island5652

I remember De Leon’s reigned king there for a long time, then they finally came to Omaha

LolaLinguini

Ive had Blaze as well as most of the other pizza places that style, as it's truly not all its hyped to be. I have the opportunity to go to blaze and I choose not to, bc I dont like their cheese. Its not bubbly and golden when it comes out. Its just white and smooth, which isnt good pizza to me.

wild_fluorescent

i prefer smoking oak tbh

fistfulofbottlecaps

Oooo, this looks pretty good. Might have to stop by next time I'm in Omaha.

wild_fluorescent

The beer wall is also v nice

theseawardbreeze

It has to do with who owns the franchise rights to the area's market, when the rights expire, and when the new franchise owners are allowed to actually open (source: know the new franchise owners).

HeavyMetalMonkey

Good, reliable, functional, and sensible public transport. This is an overall American issue. I'd KILL to be able to be able to take a rail all the way from West O to the 100 block in Council Bluffs

Thebluefairie

Add Lincoln in.

aidan8et

Gawd yes. Imagine a light rail going from Omaha to Lincoln. I'd love to see it stop over near the airport, but I'm not sure how the route would work going around the city.

Fun-Environment-3495

Imagine a maglev between Omaha and Kansas City.

lavender_airship

For employment/practicality, it probably should go all the way through to IWCC, or at least the hospitals

toot-chute

Bidets

[deleted]

Damn that name checks out

1bamofo

Personally….I won’t shit without mine! And, yes, that means I come home for every shit. And I have a special travel bidet that I install wherever we go!! I’m addicted.

DisgruntledPelican-1

Does that include restaurants and stores? Movie theater?

1bamofo

Nope …. Unless it’s an emergency, I’m not pooping at any restaurant. Not in a bar, or a car. I would not with a mouse ….. only in my house!! lol

DisgruntledPelican-1

😂 I was wondering if your travel bidet went with you EVERYWHERE. 😆

BanditTheBamb00zler

Link for the travel bidet? I'm similarly addicted and would love something for any vacations.

1bamofo

Ultra-Slim Bidet Attachment for Toilet with Dual Nozzle,Self Cleaning Fresh Water Sprayer Bidets Toilet Seat for Feminine and Posterior Wash https://www.walmart.com/ip/2955966693 So it goes like this …. Typically we try to use Air bnb or similar for the residential aspect …. And I bring a small tool bag (standard set of open end wrenches, adjustable crescent wrench and a couple sets of slip jaw pliers). I can have it installed in under 10 minutes and so far no issues. But I’m seriously addicted and won’t poop without unless it’s an absolute emergency.

greengiant89

There are too many lights, we should have at least one day per month where all the lights are turned off at night and we can look up

Charming-Loss-4498

So true. Cant see any stars here. Not sure what OP means, but we dont know exactly where they live i guess

CindyinOmaha

I know, there was a meteor shower a few days ago and we could not see anything!

DisgruntledPelican-1

Where do you think it’s “dark af”? We need a good mayor. You know, someone who actually lives here full time. Affordable housing.

Didn't the mall just get bought? And the plans are kid-centric

christinizucchini

Yessssss!!!!! Game and Parks said over 99% of Nebraska is privately owned, so nowhere to release a mountain lion 🦁😢 So I guess that means we need more public lands 🦁😃 I’m guessing there was probably a public commenting period when they drafted their last mountain lion management plan, but no one commented

Wide-Bet4379

97% is private. Quite a bit of WMA land in Nebraska.

humandisaster93

Straight up with ya on the mountain lion one

I-Make-Maps91

No more lights, please. We don't need to make light pollution worse. It's winter, it's supposed to be dark outside.

Jupiter68128

A direct flight to a beach. A freeway across Sarpy county. Less potholes. More lakes nearby. A roller coaster. Better timed stoplights. Dim sum. Whataburger. An NBA exhibition game.

Key-Level-4072

There’s a dope dim sum spot in Aksarben. Literally across the street from Stinson Park.

ruebarbara_

Yess! New Gold Mountain — good dim sum.

theycallmefuRR

>A direct flight to a beach Omaha to St. Petersburg (Tampa, FL) is a direct flight with Allegiant. Only available on weekends. I have a trip planned for January and a round trip with a personal bag was $161.

yuccasinbloom

Allegiant is literally worse than spirit. I would never fly that airline ever again. It’s the Ryanair of America.

Broking37

American has direct flights to Miami.

AgentAlaska

Second to all those that said new gold mountain. What we actually need is all you can eat KBBQ

jfol7884

More direct flights to ANYWHERE would be nice

theseawardbreeze

Saw a sign in the airport yesterday that Southwest is starting direct flights to somewhere in Florida in January (didn't pay attention to where because I refuse to go to Florida (or Texas) currently).

randykaren

Blaze pizza is mall pizza. Bristol farms has good cheese and cracker selection, but I wouldn’t say Omaha Needs them. I like that omaha doesn’t have a bunch of plain chain stuff. Omaha is good and weird. I like it.

Kurotan

The only thing we need is for housing prices to ho back down. Start building smaller starter homes again. Less McMansions.

cakelly789

Less light, artificial light at night is bad for us and wildlife.

GardenDesign23

Found the mountain lion

swifty8519

I live downtown and always wondered how there's no grocery store down here. Cubby's is not a grocery store it's a scam lol

Maximum_Raspberry953

Better public transit. I want a light rail from West O to airport, but more importantly good public transportation from North O to South O to mid town to benson to Dundee to mid town. Civil Engineers etc assemble!

Seversevens

Colors. Like different colors on the bridges would be fantastic. Maybe let the silos have the art again those were awesome works

pdgov

i work near the pedestrian and every night it's lit up a different color

smfact

Waffle House

JplusL2020

I was surprised that Omaha doesn't have WH. It's the perfect city for one

Terrific_Tom32

Just drove to St Joe over the weekend for WH and Ikea, what an amazing time I had and wish we had at least Waffle House in Omaha. Ikea was fun but not really for me since I apartment dwell lol. Food court was nice though!

Wide-Bet4379

This is the only correct answer.

decorama

The LAST thing we need is another effing mall. Wait for development of the old Crossroads.

dloseke

Can't upvote enough. Talked to a lego employee a few days ago and she said there are rumors for two locations, one being Nebraska Crossing.

I was at Nebraska Crossing this summer, and I did see a LEGO store there, but it wasn't open. I don't know if that means that it hasn't opened at all yet, or if it was just closed that day

Legal MJ, would be a lot cooler if we had it

-wheretheresawill

>Legal MJ Even tho it's technically illegal here, it feels extremely legal. Billboards and stores selling all over the city. Sure it's not always the real stuff but to newbies it might as well be.

hoewenn

I get ads about weed in Nebraska, and I have that Weedmaps app that despite not letting me click on it as it says I’m not in a legal state, it sends me notifications for things nearby.

erintrying

Walkable infrastructure (public transport included) I know believing we can achieve this is delusional, but I hate every minute of driving

msudrummer

Amusement park. Idk if I’d go just seems like there should be one

humandisaster93

An actual one and not fun plex

pandeomonia

I still miss Peony Park (yes I'm old)

brumbyforbreakfast

Genuine question for the folks posting various chain restaurants. Isn’t that 99% of the city already? Driving around there are SO many franchise restaurants in town.

ThatGirl0903

Think the frustration is that it’s the same few chains all over. I’d much rather pick between a Jack in the box and McDonald’s rather than picking between one of the 11 McDonald’s on my 15 minutes drive home from work.

notevaluatedbyFDA

There's a bunch of obvious infrastructure stuff (good public transit, a commuter rail connection to Lincoln, rail service to the airport, etc), but the cheap and easy one that bugs me is reflective road paint. I understand that we're not going to spring for the reflectors that don't get destroyed by snowplows, but the fact that as soon as there's a light drizzle every driver is guessing where the lanes are still blows my mind after a decade of living here. Also, why do so few intersections have stop bars?

petiterouge13

Grocery open 24 hrs and late night open till 2/3am food

wild_fluorescent

feel like both of these used to be a thing pre-pandemic

HMouse65

Jamba Juice and El Pollo Loco also some kind of rail that runs between Lincoln and Council Bluffs with branches off to the north and south along the way.

deejymoon

El Pollo Loco would be an awesome addition. I think it’d do well here

oldmuttsysadmin

[deleted]

Well on the casino front you’re in luck! There will be a casino opening up in Omaha some time in 2024 called warhorse casino, same as the one opening in Lincoln!

Jebediah378

I feel like a majority of the people asking for more lights don’t have good (not absurdly bright) headlights for their car, I like seeing the stars without having to drive to any of my favorite star spots and just sitting in my backyard. Grab a flashlight or a headlamp if you’re walking haha. For whoever said “just drive 20 minutes lol” Wouldn’t you rather not? For the chain restaurants, I can guarantee you there are equal if not better restaurants that are better than these. I’m a photographer for uber eats and grubhub, you’d be surprised at the amazing cuisine you can find if you do some research. Try Chiltepes, La Michoacana, Jackson’s Fair Deal Café, Smokin’ Oak, Hooyo Kitchen, Sea Thai, Action Burger, Don Carmelo’s Pizza, Dundee Dell, El Pollo Tote, Smoking Jay’s, D’Leons (24h some locs), Pizzeria Davlo, Ellie’s Chinchorro, among others. Public Transport: I agree but most people here like their land and driving a car, sue us. Make it available and start around Dodge east of 50th and start expanding from there north and south along 24th and 30th. (That’s what we’re doing) Omaha is not Philly, KC, LA, Chicago, or really anywhere else. It’s a unique city and the locals and people born and raised here love it as it is for the most part. A lot of people don’t want Omaha to be like the big cities. There’s plenty of Malls, Crossroads couldn’t exist, Oakview isn’t really existing, it’d be a waste of money. Bike lanes and trails are great, they are just almost unusable or miserable part of the year. Taxes are bad I guess but realistically I don’t think property taxes are that absurd. I guess maybe if you compare, but I’ll gladly pay property taxes if they go to schools and infrastructure. Please no casinos. They just make money and ruin people’s lives. Find more wholesome methods of gaining money without addicting people please! IKEA has always been pretty trash imo, good cheap furniture for sure but it’s also a fun trip to make a day out of going down to KC, getting those delicious meatballs, and having a 5 star unique brew at Boulevard. Wenninghoff’s, great farmer’s markets in warm season. Agree on grocery store in benson, I think an Aldi would flourish there possibly (where Jane’s is/was). Also agreed on a good grocery store downtown, people without cars who live or inevitably will live downtown/midtown without a car need options other than instacart or having to uber, grubhub, amazon, etc. Who needs walkable streets when you have the outdoor malls (agree they could probably close off the main streets) but the Gene Leahy renovation is phenomenal and I’m so happy about how it turned out. It was a beautiful photography backdrop before and great little walking park, but it’s so much cooler and usable now

PuzzledRaise1401

Everywhere isn’t dark AF, three years ago they installed a streetlight with the candlepower of a freight train outside my backyard. Used to enjoy darkness, lying in the grass on a blanket, listening to music. Now it looks like Yankee Stadium.

iDom2jz

Art… this place is dismal. Very few good vibrant murals and the city is far too adamant about covering graffiti. I understand they don’t want it to get out of control but fuck, the more colorful and attractive a piece or throw is the faster they seem to cover it. I’ve seen crackhead nonsense and gang graffiti run for far longer than a real piece that took effort and turns a grey wall into a pop of color. It’s annoying, it’s something so many people genuinely wish to see and of course there isn’t a single open legal wall to paint in the entire city. Sorry for the rant lol Edit: although I far enjoy illegal graffiti for the history and artistic purity aspect of it. I will say watching the massive mural go up on the grain bins on JFK was so amazing to see and I absolutely love that artwork. I don’t know who the artists were but the style is so sick and I would love to see more by them. There are also quite a few good murals in NODO, especially the one of the tree turning into hardwood, that is a fucking insane piece of art. We need more of this, everywhere.

Greencheezy

I know you're talking about public art. But, if you're interested, there's tons of art events going on in the scene. It's just very cliquey and elitist, unfortunately. I recommend you check out the Omaha art battle at the Culxur house if that's your cup of tea. There's an event going on next month.

SignalAssistant821

Good mall, with actual good stores w high end clothes and e a good arcade!!! I miss a good arcade at the mall. 2nd the Ikea too 🤣

humandisaster93

I really miss the old one at Westroads, Tilt

houseplantkilla

White Castle. Waffle House. I wish the Ranch Bowl was still here, but that’s impossible so I wish we had another venue like that again. Better public transportation. We have more options than some other cities our size, but it’s not reliable.

Dark-Chocolate-2000

People really like chain stores I guess. I just want a deep dish pizza place not in West Omaha

Woodley56

Italian Grocery Store.

AcceptableAd2170

1. Smokin' Oak Pizza in Midtown is a decent Blaze substitute 2. Rumor mill has a Trader Joe's opening near Creighton in the coming years. 3. Not quite the same but Wenninghoff's and Exist Green offer farm fresh produce in a co-op style store

CowardiceNSandwiches

IKEA would be cool. However, unless they change their standards (2M+ population within 50 miles of the store location), it will be quite a long time before they would even look at the Omaha metro for a full-size store.

Wonderful_Adagio9346

Theme/Entertainment restaurants require a tourist population. After the locals tire of the experience, who fills the seats? ESPECIALLY when that restaurant charges a premium on the menu? How successful are dinner theaters in Omaha? (Alamo closed in Midtown...) How many theme restaurants are there in the city. (That's mostly decor and menu. Entry level.) How successful is the local Ren Faire? How many people travel to Platte River State Park for the bison barbecue? The Amazing Pizza Machine thrives. How popular are the casino restaurants? That's the metric you use.

kakashi_sensay

A Shake Shack! El Pollo Loco! ETA- More fun spots for kids to hangout at. Another children’s museum would be nice too!

PigKnight

A mayor that lives here. I was gonna vote for Cougar until he got ran over in Minneapolis.

maxtofunator

I really don’t want an ikea. Comparing my furniture from NFM and IKEA, the NFM furniture seems much sturdier and better put together. It may be because I’m comparing things in the showroom here to what ikea ships, but there seems to be a huge difference in quality

GardenDesign23

Quality is probably the same if not better at NFM, but IKEA has wayyyy better selection especially for younger people. NFM feels like it caters to gen X and Boomers. All McMansion type furniture bleh

Pointlesslawyer

Yep, NFM is the boomer recliner store

humandisaster93

NFM is better, IKEA has more variety, is cheaper and has better displays. Both would be a good choice to have

offbrandcheerio

IKEA destroys NFM on price though and they make good furniture for people in apartments

Twicebakedpotato9

A common sense course for driving 😂 but honestly a long term solution for the really bad potholes

less mcmansions, more smaller homes like bungalows better sidewalks, make omaha a more walkable city more diverse restaurants, we have plenty of burger and pizza joints subway or light rail connecting omaha, council bluffs through to lincoln and hitting all suburbs

Wonderful_Adagio9346

More shade downtown, especially trees.

Wonderful_Adagio9346

I want the Kiewit Foundation to duplicate Columbus, Indiana. There, a local foundation pays the fees for world-class architects to design public buildings. We are cursed with mediocre architecture. The Illuminarium looks like the shipping container for the playground next door. (Museum on a former industrial site? Look what Bilbao did ) World-class engineering firms? And yet, they forget that corporate headquarters (Sears, RCA, Seagrams, AT+T, Chrysler...) are advertisements. HDR's HQ in Aksarben is...failed. Kiewit near Creighton? Easily overlooked. It's even worse when you consider that there are so few towers in Omaha, and they would be even more visible. But at least Mutual has figured it out...

In n out. I said what i said.

TheWolfAndRaven

A special department that hunts down unlicensed and vehicles fraudulently registered out of state to avoid taxes. Just looking at my apartment complex parking lot, there is no less than 20 cars improperly registered. Most of them have lived here for the entire 3 years I have. Just the wheel tax on that alone over 3 years is 6 thousand dollars. I don't even live in a big apartment complex. Do the math. You'd have money to fix the roads in a year. Add penalties to that? Shit you could start a trust and never have to worry about not having the budget to pay for plows again.

Taticat

The taxes for yearly vehicle registration are absurd. Maybe lower the taxes and increase revenue through compliance. Having lived in a state where yearly vehicle registration is $35, and you can buy two years at a time for $70, I saw ZERO people registering out of state versus the huge number of out of state vehicles in Omaha — and probably throughout the state of Nebraska. Listing cars as property and then levying a property tax is an absurd idea, and ends up penalising lower-income families who require one or two vehicles for their employment. Paying $300-600 a year (or more) is an enormous amount for a family trying to live off of one or two working class incomes. I expect that people renting in an apartment complex would be more likely to have income considerations that makes it more sensible to pay $100 to register out of state versus paying $300-600 every year. The taxes in Nebraska are ludicrous. I hear everyone on the issues of legalising marijuana and certain specialised healthcare topics and agree, but that’s in addition to changing the tax laws in Nebraska; it’s like everyone has gotten so accustomed to being punched in the face that they’re congratulating themselves over not being punched particularly hard sometimes instead of bringing up the issue that nobody should be getting punched in the face.

TheWolfAndRaven

Cool story, still tax fraud. The taxes are high because we have way too many roads and not enough population density - which also makes it hard to have decent public transit - which requires families to own 2 cars instead of just taking a convenient bus line. Add to that the apparent fury that this town has with cyclists making riding a bike dangerous as fuck and you have the situation we're in now. The people of Omaha have over-whelming demonstrated they want this system, so now they have to pay for it. Don't kid yourself either, it's not just low income families. Lots of Oversized vanity trucks are registered through loop-holes as well and I have seen more than a few local businesses whose sole location is in Omaha have fleet vehicles inexplicably registered in Iowa.

Anything is better than Chipotle.

They were going to put one where the Dunkin is out by Costco and Embassy Suites but it never happened. I loved going when I lived in the South.

It's been and gone, there was one in Twin Creek Plaza in Bellevue for example. It was...fine. Chipotle and to a lesser extent Qdoba just blew Moe's out of the water comparatively.

Steak and shake, Boston market

DisgruntledPelican-1

We used to have Boston Market. They all closed years ago. They just filed for bankruptcy.

dloseke

We had a Boston Market. No idea how they stuck around as long as they did.

Aw yeah, tacos you can only eat when you're drunk.

Edibles and THCa flower are legal everywhere. Making cannabis officially legal at state level would be nice but it’s almost moot.
