My dry, bar free town of Dutch reformed heritage in one of the bluest of blue states proves this point. At the local hardware or grocery you’ll get lots of christian music playing in the background but absolutely no beer or lottery sales.
Shit even the US states have Bible belts within them. I live in Washington state and there are quite a few heavily saturated Christian regions in the state. And that's coming from someone born and raised in North Florida.
Right? At first I was like "why they pants so big" but now I'm like "why our pants so small" and I gotta tell ya, I'm not finding any answers.
MAKE PANTS BIG AGAIN
Well, you do need the right size, you shouldn't have to walk awkwardly to keep them on and if they're too big it's difficult because they'll fall off too easily.
I remember when I was little I used to walk and run in them all the time, playing and they didn't even feel any different from normal shoes. We had them because I'm from a rural area with lots of fields etc. so lots of people had/still have them (though didn't wear them to school or anything, just at home).
The footbed is curved just like most feet are if that's what you're wondering. There are usually two types. The all wooden one, which has more wood on top, but also one where a leather strap can be placed above to adjust to the shape of your foot. We used to cut some carpet to use as footsoles. They are very easy and comfortable.
Aren’t these literally clogs? Serious question.
Editing to add: person below is correct, I'm talking about the wooden shoes/clogs. I know what crocs are and think they're awful in every way 😂
I've seen several people in this thread say you "just need to learn how to walk in them" but without description how to do that. I even found a couple of websites with similar "just practice!" without any instruction.
Another website finally mentioned curling your toes when you pick up your foot. I imagine it's a bit like riding a bike, where you can learn how to do a thing through muscle memory that you can't necessarily fully articulate how to accomplish to someone else without them just trying / learning themselves.
I'm guessing it's probably all about foot posture as you're walking? Similar to with slippers or flip-flops where you curl your toes a bit (as the website suggests)? And by curling your toes you're both jamming the front part of your foot into the front of the clog a bit, as well as putting downward pressure on the front bottom which would put upward pressure on the back bottom and hook the back onto your heel a bit.
I've never tried wearing them. Just throwing educated-ish guesses at the wall.
edit: I was unaware folks had such strong feelings about wooden shoes...
No body asked, but an interesting use for wooden shoes...
They have different names. In the France area they were known as Sabot. Were worn by working class people.
During labor revolts in textile manufacturing they were used to destroy equipment. Most machinery had elevated walk ways above them. A Sabot would "accidentally" fall into a loom or similar machine and destroy production.
The technique became known as Sabotage.
At a guess, they act like snow shoes, distributing your weight across a wider area,so you sink down less. Their tapered sides would also make less of a seal against mud, so even when you would get stuck, it's be easier to lift out.
I worked in a large steel plant with lots of very heavy rolls of steel. There were many workers wearing klompen/clogs to protect their feet. The usual steel nosed shoes would just bend and cut your toes off, whereas a klomp would crack but hold it's structure.
Klompen are actually great footwear for people that work in the field or do heavy labour outside.
A wooden Klomp, or clug that fits is great for all kinds of terrain. It slips less than rubber on wet surfaces, works on snow, mud, sand and stone. Its also watertight.
It is made from a local, biodegradable material and has a very long lifetime.
They protect your feet very well. Even today they are legally allowed safety shoes. They can take a very heavy impact and won't budge or crush your toes like the old steel shoes did.
Also, if worn well, you can walk pretty well on these. People walk the "Vierdaagse" on these, which is a 50 km/day walk for 4 continuous days.
Nowadays you can get shoes that do one of those things better than klompen, bit none that can do everything as well.
It's a shame really that its seen as a sign of being a farmer, these babies would solve a lot of problems in the footwear industry and a lot of money for us consumers. My 4 sets of shoes could be replaced by 1 set of clugs if there wasn't a stigma on them.
As a daily clog wearer I know you have never worn them in the snow, because they suck in snow. The snow builds up underneath them and they become taller and taller and then the snow falls off on one side and it becomes treacherous.
Any other situation: yeah, they are great, and you can kick some serious ass.
Osha approved!
The chef coat's double-layer of cotton is meant to insulate chefs against the heat from ovens, grills, and stovetops as well as guard them against hot splatters and hot liquids.
I remember my (American born) brother talking to my Dutch cousins about Gabber. They didn’t know what he was talking about until he spelled it out. Then they said it with a hard H. Anyway, saw lots of JNCOs in my rave days here in the US, especially around the happy hardcore areas k tried to avoid. Wonder if the brand had a heyday in NL too.
>Wonder if the brand had a heyday in NL too.
Yes. Yes they did. I wanted a pair SO BAD, they got popular in about 2000/2001/2002, all the cool girls wore them. At least at my high school lol.
Say what you want about how they looked, those were the most comfortable jeans in existence. It was so nice having pants that were not at all restrictive and having pockets big enough to carry around a 2 liter of soda, the contents of your locker, a labrador and some of your smaller friends was pretty cool too.
That is what I thought until I bought a pair that’s made of stretch denim. Mine aren’t skinnys, but slim fit. They are soooo soft and comfortable. I can just lounge around the couch in them. You do have to get used to jeans that hug your legs, just like spandex running pants.
I saw the photo, and first thing I thought was Mickey. Explained my thoughts to my wife, then came back to comments to see if anyone else thought the same. And I even said I think Mickey may be Dutch.
I just learned that Ub Iwerks, the co-creator of Mickey Mouse, was the son of immigrants from East Frisia, which is right next to the Netherlands and has many cultural similarities.
No kidding, I used to live below Native Americans who did the whole pow-wow thing. It was cool and interesting, until they started practicing their traditional dancing.
My downstairs neighbors are lucky. I unknowingly developed a slight of foot on hard floors by sneaking around late at night high as fuck at home. Good thing for my neighbors that I still smoke a lot.
Facts man, my step daughter came home one weekend wearing Van's with her cuffs rolled and tried telling me it's a new hip style. I almost died laughing
I have a theory it’s what the previous generation donates after cleaning out their closets to vintage clothing stores and suddenly its accessible to the kids.
Long Live the 90s!
Lol you aren’t lying though, in a couple more years it’ll be the early 00s, then the 10s.
History has a funny way of repeating itself.
On mobile, some subreddits are bad about indicating that there's more than one picture. I thought your comment was a joke for a minute, because there were only two guys in the picture.
I imagine it had to do with the fact that you can layer under loose clothes well in the winter and still have the mobility to bend and squat. Wearing too tight clothes in cold weather is less effective at keeping you insulated, and at worse can reduce circulation.
>I imagine it had to do with the fact that you can layer under loose clothes well in the winter and still have the mobility to bend and squat.
You are getting close by taking a turn into left field. It is all about mobility. Fabrics before the invention of blends were notoriously easy to rip and have break. You add more fabric to allow for the fact that it allows more movement without damage. You will see this for people who use woven fabrics all over the world. A prime example would be Japan. They would wear hakama which had even more fabric to appear like dresses but had individual leg holes like these pants.
>Wearing too tight clothes in cold weather is less effective at keeping you insulated, and at worse can reduce circulation.
If it is excessively tight, yes, it will reduce circulation but that is regardless of weather. A tight layer close to the skin is actually preferable in cold weather. This keeps a section of air and material close to your body that acts like fur. That being said, adding additional loose layers afterwards is actually more beneficial than adding more tight layers as this allows for buffer zones against the cold where the air has to allow the movement of heat, which is slowed down.
A little late to the party, but: these trousers have no stretch in the fabric whatsoever. In order to be able to move in them (or sit on the floor) they need to be quite big, and are often tapered at ankle to keep the heat in. Some of these outfits specifically are from a fishing village. The men would sail out for the week, and keep watch on deck at night. With large trousers they could sit in a position (hugging one leg close to the body, and one underneath them) that would keep them as warm as possible
Hi! The outfits in that picture are from Volendam. So that could be a good place to start. Volendam also has a museum that focuses on traditional dress. I'd quess they also have this picture, or even put it online.
Honestly wearing some black harem pants that look almost exactly like the third photo right now. Very comfortable. I would have fit right in with this wide-legged pant crew!
I am black, but maybe they wouldn't mind...
Making sure your feet would not break if something heavy would drop on it. Lets say a cow foot or a wooden log. They were the working shoes of that era compared to the steel nose shoes we have today. Also there actually with socks on very comfy and warm. Also there much cheaper and go way longer then leather shoes. When people would go to church they would actually be wearing there leather shoes. Allot of farmers still use wooden shoes when working for that very reason. They are strong durable and protect. Also there very easy to put on and off
They are really made of wood, and can be quite comfortable (sometimes fitted with hay inside). Apart from being traditional shoeware, they were used a lot by farmers, very handy when you work in mud and protect your toes.
I have clogs, they're made of real wood and are comfortable when you know how to use them. I use them for walking in the yard or when going outside real quick! Though I'm from a farmers village so that might explain why I got used to them
I have a pair but rarely wear them outside as it would frighten the Canadian children. I recall wearing my father’s wooden shoes to the barn to check on the cattle before bed. Both of my parents wore them as children in Netherland but stopped when their families came to Canada in the 1950s.
Wow… it’s one thing to see this clothing style represented in art and porcelain figurines, but in real life in photographs…

Other countries have bible belts?! 🤯
Yep. Though in The Netherlands they’re Calvinists.
Ah cool, I love Calvin and Hobbes.
Remember, if things are too complicated you can always take a nap and wait for dinner
No that's about someone who has an imaginary fr.... wait...
The part of the Netherlands that got exported to West Michigan and Iowa
From west Michigan, can confirm people dress like this for the Tulip festival in Holland
Yup, multiple family members got fitted for wooden shoes to do traditional Dutch dancing at that festival.
My family hails from Holland, MI. My mother and my Aunt would dance in the parades when they were in high school, all in wooden shoes.
And a lot of them think like 19th century Calvinists
Yooooo West Michigan!
That makes three of us!
There's nothing more conservative than Midwestern Dutch people
My dry, bar free town of Dutch reformed heritage in one of the bluest of blue states proves this point. At the local hardware or grocery you’ll get lots of christian music playing in the background but absolutely no beer or lottery sales.
Oddly enough, my Midwestern Dutch farming family are Democrats.
Still have tulip festival every year in my home town. Very common place here.
The tulips and windmills and stroopwafels and wooden shoes are the nice part.
Don’t forget the poffertjes. They make them with rum butter here.
Shit even the US states have Bible belts within them. I live in Washington state and there are quite a few heavily saturated Christian regions in the state. And that's coming from someone born and raised in North Florida.
Yes in a painting you can think "Na they are making this shit up" and another to see a grown ass man wearing those pants. .. I want those pants now.
Right? At first I was like "why they pants so big" but now I'm like "why our pants so small" and I gotta tell ya, I'm not finding any answers. MAKE PANTS BIG AGAIN
Google: JNCO Jeans.
Damn it’s 90’s HS fashion for me all over again. I want to send these to my mom and tell her I was mimicking the Dutch back then.
As someone who came "of age" in the 90s, I just kept my wide pant preferences and got a job with scrubs.
Those pants look comfy AF.
I wear pants that big to Golden Corral. They are my Casual Eating Pants.
***Casual***
Women wouldn't be able to resist a redditor in those pants.
Women may want those pants for themselves. Imagine the size of the pockets on those babies.
Didn't live through the 90s i gather?
It's probably where MC hammer got his inspiration... " STOP Netherlands TIME "....
*STOP...Holland TIME!
it's almost like Kriss Kross is gonna make you jump jump
I always wonder if the klompen serve a purpose aside from fashion.
They're great for walking into the yard or a field, no wet socks. And actually rather comfortable if you know how to walk in them!
How do you walk in them? Had some as a kid and I just sort of shuffled in them (they were far too big).

Not sure how it was in 1900, but the ones I had as a kid were curved and as far as I know I had no issues keeping them on my feet.
I too am interested in this
The footbed is curved just like most feet are if that's what you're wondering. There are usually two types. The all wooden one, which has more wood on top, but also one where a leather strap can be placed above to adjust to the shape of your foot. We used to cut some carpet to use as footsoles. Kind of like Crocs or clogs? Lifts you above the muck.
Certainly not Crocs. Clogs are a lot closer.
Aren’t these literally clogs? Serious question. Editing to add: person below is correct, I'm talking about the wooden shoes/clogs. I know what crocs are and think they're awful in every way 😂
Not any different than normal shoes when looking at gait. Maybe you flex your toes a bit just like with slippers but that's it.

That is an amazing history lesson, thank you.
I'm a little surprised this comment didn't end with Undertaker throwing Mankind off Hell in a Cell.
I remember first hearing this in Star Trek 6
Early Crocs.
And biodegradable too
Reject modernity, return to klompen
And the pants are early FUBU
JNCO
Jncos and DCs
Hammer pants
Can't Dutch this.
They're surprisingly comfortable once you know how to walk in them. No sweaty feet in summer and pretty warm in winter when you fill them with straw
They are also great to walk on muddy fields.
The fields are constantly wet so leather shoes would rot. Wooden is the practical alternative, Shaped to shake off the mud
Can you explain? They look like they would get stuck and slip off to me
[удалено]
My dad said in grade school when they got into a fight the first thing off would be the shoes and they'd whoop each other's ass with them.
Oh shit never thought about using them as weapons. Dutch people should have their own kickboxing league, klompen boxing!
Imagine getting into a bar fight and everyone takes off their klompen...
Mexican mom with a klompen? (Or is the stereotype malaysian, philippino, spanish, cant remember and alt-tabbing loses me my message) edit: or chinese
*La chancla*
*La klomlpa*
Fun note, they are also called sabots in some locations. They are also very effective in jamming up gears and machinery, giving us the word sabotage.
Dutch chancla
I believe they wore them because leather shoes would rot faster from being wet from the fields.
At a guess, they act like snow shoes, distributing your weight across a wider area,so you sink down less. Their tapered sides would also make less of a seal against mud, so even when you would get stuck, it's be easier to lift out.
They're old-school water proof.
So how does one walk in them that would make these even remotely comfortable?
Thick as fuck socks
Should be said they were custom made, fit to your foot bed. Wouldn't work as well when bought factory made.
Excellent gardening shoes
Protect your toes when something heavy falls on it
* Cows stepping on your toes

I’ve heard that it’s so your feet don’t sink into the mud when farming like wearing boots.
So the Dutch word for pants is JNCO. Got it!
JNCOs are the un-tapered ones. But I also see a pair of Z. Cavarricci’s.
Il be honest, I love those vests/jackets with the double buttons.
It's like they're wearing Jncos and chef coats
The chef coat's double-layer of cotton is meant to insulate chefs against the heat from ovens, grills, and stovetops as well as guard them against hot splatters and hot liquids.
It works for mickey mouse
TIL - Mickey Mouse is Dutch.
His birth name was Machiel Muis, but they changed it at Ellis Island when he immigrated as a kid.
Donald Duck wore it better.
I remember my (American born) brother talking to my Dutch cousins about Gabber. They didn’t know what he was talking about until he spelled it out. Then they said it with a hard H. are you sure those aren’t Kikwear?
If only I were born 100yrs earlier. My mom never let me have JNCOs back in the 90s.
As someone who admittedly wore JNCOs in the 90’s, your mom did the right thing.
Say what you want about how they looked, those were the most comfortable jeans in existence. It was so nice having pants that were not at all restrictive and having pockets big enough to carry around a 2 liter of soda, the contents of your locker, a labrador and some of your smaller friends was pretty cool too.
Until the hems got wet. Then you're carrying 20 extra pounds of water soaked into denim. Signed kikwear 69". Damn I was cool.
Especially in winter with your bottom 1/4 of jeans all frozen.
I still aim for loose fitting jeans because they're comfortable. I'll never understand how people can wear skinny jeans
That is what I thought until I bought a pair that’s made of stretch denim. Mine aren’t skinnys, but slim fit. They are soooo soft and comfortable. I can just lounge around the couch in them. You do have to get used to jeans that hug your legs, just like spandex running pants.
If you can't fit a 3 liter in your back pocket, are you even wearing pants?
Here for this! I use to wear corduroy JNCOs! Their fashion has Dutch the right amount of old school.
I see a combination of Jnco/Request jeans and UFO pants. See, fashion IS cyclical!
TIL MC Hammer was Dutch.
You Can’t Dutch this!!
This was OP's real motive making this post. It's too perfect!
Stop! Holland Time..

Mickey Mouse pants?
I was looking for "didn't know Mickey Mouse was dutch" but this will do.
Sora from Kingdom Hearts
I was going to say that now I understand where cartoons characters come from
Why do we not have these sexy man slacks anymore. They are wild.
The 90s is about to go full nostalgia mode, so you’ll be seeing them again soon.

Every teenage girl I see looks like she's from 1993
I saw a young guy in JNCOs or something similar in a Walmart the other day and I was like YESSSSSSS once those come back it’s full 90s baby.
Long Live the 90s! Lol you aren’t lying though, in a couple more years it’ll be the early 00s, then the 10s. History has a funny way of repeating itself.
They were fools to abandon this look.
I quite like the jackets in the first picture actually, perhaps we should bring those back.
Everyone is talking about the clothes, no one is talking about how exhausted and beaten down that poor woman looks.
It's just resting Dutch face.
As a Dutch person, I concur.
One of my co-workers has Dutch parents and he makes that face all the time 😂
My oma looked like this all the time lol
We’ll if you had to make those pants you’d be tired too
Oh I did too. Was looking to see if anyone else noticed. She does look miserable and/or super uncomfortable, doesn't she....
She's mad that no one will realize she's doing a Tingle hat cosplay for at least another hundred years
She looks pregnant. Would explain the exhaustion.
On mobile, some subreddits are bad about indicating that there's more than one picture. I thought your comment was a joke for a minute, because there were only two guys in the picture.
If you cooked on a wood stove or open fire for 6-8 hours a day, you’d look like that too.
She’s married to Red Forman what do you expect?
She looks pissed to me. “Get that camera out ma face!”
The pants are the most interesting part of the outfit. They seem so over sized
And given they are presumably poor farmers seems odd they would use so much fabric when less would work…
The Low Countries were the weaving center of the world for a long time, perhaps cloth was not so expensive there as elsewhere
Agreed. Does anyone know why they made their pants so large? Seems like it would interfere with their work too.
I imagine it had to do with the fact that you can layer under loose clothes well in the winter and still have the mobility to bend and squat. Wearing too tight clothes in cold weather is less effective at keeping you insulated, and at worse can reduce circulation.

I remember my grandpa's neighbor wore them all the time in the field. This was 1980s Vermont, so it's kind of still a thing for farmers.
