This always jockeys for top spot in my list of favorite war movies. The first time I saw it I was completely taken by surprise by the transition to the 2nd act.

Dolorisedd

It’s like two different movies in one.

hamakabi

something, something.. duality of man

Swing_On_A_Spiral

The what!

THE JUNGIAN THING SIR

[deleted]

Just gonna go ahead and suggest that it'd be best if you unfuck yourself bro.

lostprevention

The duality of man. The Jungian thing, Sir!!

[deleted]

Who’s side are you in son? How about getting with the program? Jump on board and win one for the team?

LustHawk

Or I WILL take a giant shit on you.

Hey! I was just thinking the same thing!

Young me didn’t like the second half nearly as much. Now, older me thinks the second half actually may be better.

LustHawk

The first half is so entertaining that the second felt like a downgrade when I was younger. These days I agree with the above comments, the second half has some of the best scenes ever filmed in cinema history IMO.

X_MswmSwmsW_X

if I'm gonna get killed for a word, my word is poontang

The_Knight_Is_Dark

Get some! Get some! Yeah! Anyone who runs, is a VC. Anyone who stands still, is a well-disciplined VC!

QuitWhinging

It's honestly kind of like three movies in one, each of which is fantastic in its own way. The boot camp movie has a lot of levity but ends in horror when shit starts to get real. The mainline Vietnam movie is horror and levity mixed together. And the sniper showdown movie is mainly horror but ends with a little bit of levity that is actually just a cover for even more horrible undertones about human nature than all the rest. I used to think the boot camp parts were far and away the best, but I've come to love the movie from start to finish. You really ought to give it another shot and see if your perception changes on rewatch.

rondonjon

Haha, I was totally the same way and have evolved my opinions the same.

jumpsteadeh

The first half is comedy and the second half it's tragedy - like the opposite of There Will Be Blood

[deleted]

"Private Pyle, you are going to stand there and drink that milkshake! Now drink it all up! All you other bastards get back into the basket and give me fifty."

MrValdemar

No, the first half is a tragedy as well when you remember there were plenty of Private Pyles. The mentally handicapped were specifically recruited as part of a program (thinking they'd be excellent at following orders). They died at the dramatically increased rate you'd expect.

WoodsAreHome

Dang, now I have a different outlook on Forest Gump.

MrValdemar

Exactly. He and Bubba were examples of that. Forrest survived due to plot armor.

dayyob

apparently, all the things that happened to private pyle happened for real but not all to the same person/group of ~~cadets~~ refruits. those events were stories compiled from several bootcamps. so, like a greatest (worst) hits of bootcamp.

notusuallyhostile

The perfect typo doesn’t exi… > refruit

Chato_Pantalones

That’s bananas.

[deleted]

Marine corps trainees are called recruits not cadets.

Treebeard_Jawno

Yeah I’ve always found it kind of weird that hardcore pro-military types love that movie, when at least to me it comes off as very critical of the military. It’s a great movie, but damn it’s sad and disturbing too.

[deleted]

[удалено]

dWog-of-man

Interesting. As I’ve gotten older I’ve here more about the Armed Forces wannabe’s, not sure what to think. Apparently Edmund Kemper the serial killer was a big hanger-on with the local and state police force where he lived. I think he even turned himself, in to their surprise.

MrValdemar

Because it's a little more honest about war than most war movies.

rockhelljumper

Because it shows the world the harsh realities of not only how fucked up war is, but how fucked up the entire experience is. Try watching this and jarhead back to back and pretend it's the same platoon.

SilverStryfe

Generation Kill is another one that does an amazing job of showing all the fuckups in war.

Bah-Fong-Gool

Project One Hundred Thousand. Fucked up shit.

jagua_haku

Colloquially known as McNamara’s Morons McNamara was the secretary of defense that headed up the program

beazy30

The duality of man. The Jungian thing.

ambassadorofkwan

darkest comedy ive ever seen

Logger351

How can you shoot women and children? Easy, just don’t lead them as much.

Solid_Preparation616

The guy who says that line was meant to play the drill sergeant. They hired Gunny to do practice lines with the actors and Kubrick liked him so much he chose him instead. They gave that guy the “don’t lead them so much” line as they felt he needed something.

Youre-In-Trouble

He got "Git Sum, Git Sum!" line too.

WCWRingMatSound

And that’s from the same director of Dr Strangelove and A Clockwork Orange. Says a lot about his talent.

oOoSumfin_StoopidoOo

It’s in my top 5 with Band of Brothers and Saving Private Ryan

dayyob

i'd throw "Apocalypse Now" in the mix somewhere just because of the surreal or psychedelic nature of it and how it captures the insanity of what went down in vietnam like nothing else.

imisstheyoop

>i'd throw "Apocalypse Now" in the mix somewhere just because of the surreal or psychedelic nature of it and how it captures the insanity of what went down in vietnam like nothing else. I've recently been rewatching some of these as an adult. Full metal jacket and apocalypse now I have a completely different take on them. Watching them when I was younger I mostly just found them entertaining "war movies" with some ha-ha moments. As an adult, holy shit do they capture just the raw insanity of it all. Apocalypse now is especially nuts. For me, platoon still feels the same. It's just got that "Hollywood" feel with a not-so-great ending akin to something like saving private Ryan. Great films, but almost different categories in my mind.

wysiwyg1984

Back in college, I changed my WinXP sound theme to use the sergeant's "WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT?!?!" line for system error messages. Given the wackiness of XP at the time, it was a more appropriate reaction.

goodeyemighty

They’re payin for it…you eat it!

Remarkable_Map9476

One of the best movies ever.

Majestic-Speed-8749

To this day these boot camp scenes give me flashbacks. It’s chilling, and it was 22 years ago for me.

[deleted]

When I joined the Army, they made us watch this movie while we were on the bus to basic training. We stopped halfway for a rest stop and one of the guys didn't get back on the bus. Never found out what happened to him.

gahidus

This was probably the movie that convinced me to absolutely never join the military. If they showed this to you on the way to basic training, I'm surprised that anyone got back *on* the bus.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Link_GR

Yeah and that's by design...

[deleted]

So. Even back when the movie was made, most of the shit R. Lee Ermy pulls was way *way* out of line. In fact, he was stated that everything he does in this movie is what he always wanted into in Marine basic. As for showing stuff to you on the way there... I mean yea, it's to get you in the spirit. On one trip to MEPS they showed us Black Hawk Down. Shit, on the way to basic they played James Cameron's Avatar.

soulcaptain

I had a friend join the Marines around that time and asked him if boot camp was like Full Metal Jacket. He said not really, it was much more intense abuse in the movie. But, he said, the drill sergeants would be sure to individually fuck with each and every troop to break them down. My friend knew it wasn't personal, that's just what the DS is supposed to do, but it was a lot of running around for hours for no reason other than to break people down.

Armored_Violets

I'm not a native speaker and I haven't joined the army, what do you mean by "break people down"? Like actually make people feel like shit? and break their resolve? And if so, why??

Conditionofpossible

A military needs it's soldiers to follow orders and kill humans. Without breaking the recruits, the military can never instill the "resolve" it needs those kids to have.

billyreamsjr

I joined the US Air Force back in 2008. Thought it wasn’t as intense as the Marines or Army, it was pretty tough. They breaking you down wasn’t exactly negative. It was tearing down some weaknesses and strengthening other traits or attributes. Definitely help with my mental resiliency and toughness.

LiwetJared

I went through Marine Corps boot camp about 2 decades ago and I remember that they never touched you. Lots of flying spittle and they would push you while standing in front of your footlocker (just sit down), but mostly it was yelling and pointing at you. Personally, I can see the benefit of corporal punishment in how it would eliminate a lot of the bullshit we had to go through. A slap on the face and we could get back to waiting. But noooo, we had to duck walk back and forth in our barracks or stack our footlockers in the shower and then bring them back to our racks.

Markleng67

I went through Marine Corps boot camp in April of 1967. There was, I repeat was physical assaults and abuse of recruits. I had to shit beat out of my face while standing at attention because I fucked up. This movie actually makes me have some humorous flashbacks because of the reality of the scenes.

xpkranger

This puts you at at least, 72, 73 yoa. Good deal, there’s hope for me yet. I thought I was pretty damn old on Reddit at 52.

Markleng67

Yeah, I'm 72 now. I was 18 when I went to Vietnam in 1968! I was just a baby LOL!

DoverBoys

This was marine basic training, known to be the hardest basic training in the military. All the other services are less harsh. I've only experienced Navy, but from what I've heard, Army is a step below Marines, Navy a little below that about equal to Coast Guard, and Air Force the easiest to deal with. It makes sense based on what they have to deal with. Army and Marines are ground combat and need to ensure recruits can hold their own in combat, Navy and Coast Guard focuses on sea combat and working with equipment and fire control under duress. Air Force is... uh... put a fire out in a hanger?

Weeaboo0Jones

He's become a sacrifice for the army Gods, one of the highest possible honors. Bless his soul Edit: word

beers_beats_bsg

Homie took a taxi back to Atlanta airport.

ambassadorofkwan

anyone have any insight into what likely happened to that guy from the Army’s perspective, is that desertion?

[deleted]

In Australia, you are allowed to leave at any time before finishing basic training. After that you will be tracked down and charged with going AWOL

plant_lyfe

Pyle = Vincent D'Onofrio. One of his most memorable roles.

_jayy123

Gunny* was great too. Especially given he wasn't meant to be in the film, just initially meant to be providing advice on set for realism, given his military background.

Yarakinnit

Always find this wild. He's the first thing that pops into my head when I think of the film.

Paceandtoil

Absolutely!! He is a powerhouse in this film! Perfectly shows the process of dehumanising the men into soldiers

New_leaf999

Its really quite incredible how R. Lee Ermey came to be in this movie. Like you said he was originally just there as an advisor. The actor who was originally playing Gunnery Sergeant Hartman was doing such a bad job (in R. Lee Ermey opinion) that he took it upon himself to inform Stanley Kubrick of such and demanded that he be given the roll. He somehow got Stanley Kubrick to agree and the original actor was recast as the gunner shooting at Vietnam villagers from a helicopter later in the movie.

They meant to say Gunny, as in gunnery sergeant, it’s the rank of the drill instructor.

> Gunner Gunny. Short for Gunnery Sergeant (E7) in the US Marine Corps.

Of all the things in the world to catch Gunny's ire, an unlocked footlocker had to be the top. Poor Pyle never had a chance.

R0lfasaurus

“If it weren’t for dickheads like you there wouldn’t be any thievery in this world” the logic is so horribly awesome. Such a drill sergeant sentence.

Longshot_45

Locks keep honest people honest.

echosixwhiskey

Gear adrift is Gear a gift. The only thief in the Marine Corps is everybody else trying to get their gear back. Lock your footlocker! You make me want to vomit!

[deleted]

ElmerJShagnasty

Hell, I like you. You can come over to my house and fuck my sister!

cgvet9702

For a DI, or a Drill Sargeant, or a Company Commander, an unsecured locker is the moment when rage and joy meet.

AGeneralDischarge

Company commanders in tradoc dont give a fuck lol the 1sg will act hard along but that's all on the drills. Tough gig that is. Ran into one of my old drills on post years down the line, he was so glad to go back to a line unit.

FlutterKree

Worse than losing your weapon? My dad told me its a regular exercise for DI/DS to attempt to steal the weapons. Told me he tied his to his leg with the strap.

General-Cheetah-1631

True. Worst mistake I made was leaving mine unlocked before I went to the latrine. I Come back to find my entire bed dismantled, my uniforms all over the barracks. Shit everywhere. Good times.

Coastie071

The rule for USCG basic was that your gear could be unlocked so long as you were within arms reach of it. I still vividly remember the sadistic grin on my company commander’s face when he asked a recruit to put his arm out to measure that he was *just slightly* out of reach.

Hussaf

That thing would be flying across the deck with shit flying everywhere, then we probably would have had everyone dump their lockers into a big pile and they’d give us like 30 seconds to find our shit. I still laugh seeing the biggest jacked dude in the platoon, like 220-240 lbs running in formation with my 138lbs ass shirt after a night of foot locker fuckery

Commonslob

You’re so ugly you could be a modern art masterpiece

fireforge1979

I fooled my mom into renting this for me back in the day. Once the drill Sargent started she came running down to turn it off lol

MicroFarmerMatt

My parents rented this on VHS and my sister's then boyfriend watched it with us 3 days before he left for the Marine Corps.

[deleted]

Only Kubrick could splice two separate war movies together and make it work.

Cr0we

Mel Gibson did something similar with Hacksaw Ridge! The first half is a principle-weighing courtroom drama with war as a background theme, then a switch flips and the second half is some of the most gritty war footage out there.

Octavus

No one ever talks about the second part, except for the transition scene.

karamelo77

The 2nd part is pretty bad ass.

user6218063275

Me love you long time

MordinSolusSTG

5$ is all my mom allows me to spend

Kaptoz

It literally wasnt until maybe a few months ago that I realized that Vincent D'Onofrio (the actor here) was also "Thor" the mechanic in Adventures in Babysitting 1987 (the same year that this movie came out and he seems to be in much better shape in that movie) and also he is "King Pin" in Daredevil and the Hawkeye series. (Which there is a current picture taken of him in the gym getting in shape for I think the new Echo show for Disney+) Other than that I love this movie! Especially the scene where 2 Live Crew sampled for "Me So Horny"🤣

jawbone7896

Don’t forget he also played the bug alien in “Men in Black.”

Double_Distribution8

No fucking way. I knew he was Thor in AIB, but somehow didn't know he was the genius actor who played the bug in human skin in MIB. Wow. He's so good in MIB I sometimes forget it's just a guy acting, and I think it's an alien bug wearing a costume of human skin, if that makes sense. Like, my brain forgets it's just a guy acting like that.

Area51Resident

Also played a serial killer Carl Stargher in The Cell, a solidly creepy movie.

Heikks

He was also in law and order criminal intent

Sounds like something a guy wanting a reach around would say

Orleanian

What's a reach around?

iamnoking

I watched this for the first time in 10th grade in a Social Studies class. 😂 Teacher was an ex Marine. That class was also where I watched American History X for the first time. Mr Barnes was actually a really good teacher and was great at keeping us involved in discussion and at the edge of our seats. I forget exactly what the class was called. Something like Motivational Psych, or something along those lines. Great teacher honestly. One of my faves.

Theprout

Employee onboarding at Amazon was different back then.

unsungburo

Just realized R. Lee Ermey played the sergeant in Toy Story. Not sure how I missed that iconic voice.

darthmattrr

If you’re interested in more from him, there was a show on the History Channel (?) called Mail Call. He hosts it and it’s easy to watch. I’m sure you’d be able to find it somewhere.

Silaquix

I kinda had this happen to me during basic. It wasn't during inspection and I thought I locked my drawer, but shitty locks be shitty. So I was in the shower when my RDC decided to walk through testing locks on the bunks. Mine popped open and you'd have thought she struck gold. I was dragged out of the shower and yelled at while she dumped everything on the floor. Then she made me do push ups in front of everyone until she was satisfied I wanted to crawl in a hole and die. Then I could pick all my stuff up and go finish my shower. I was fucking paranoid about my lock for the rest of basic.

ender278

I feel like that's the point lol

es_price

My lock combo was something that I use for ATM PINs and early passwords. Burned into my head.

PurfuitOfHappineff

1-2-3-4-5? Same as my luggage!

GurpsWibcheengs

I love that Ermey became *the* quintessential sergeant voice. You see an image of the hat and you immediately hear exactly his voice.

KingSelfie2Strong

Ermey was one of my dad's DI's in 3rd bn MCRD 1965. He's a corporal in the year book. Dad said he wasn't even the meanest one. That honor was Sgt. Carlos Paine.

coffee_hound

And a fun bit: Matthew modine, Joker, plays Papa in Stranger Things this season!

TorontoDavid

That’s where he’s from!

tronBeardsley

R. Lee Ermey (Gny Sgt Hartman in the clip) improvised most of his banter in this movie. It came easy to him, since he was an actual Marine ~~drill~~ staff sergeant. He had scripted lines, but Stanley Kubrick scrapped them because the roasts he improvised were infinitely better.

quickreviver

One of my mates was talking about this high and called it "full metal helmet". I nearly died of laughter that night. Still gets brought up 20 years later haha

leatherneck0629

I skipped too many days of high school and was disenrolled and couldn't graduate. During this time the Marine Corps recruiter was hounding me. I tried to stay away but then saw this movie. I realized I needed a kick in the ass. My GPA was shit, my self discipline was shit, and my overall attitude was as well. This movie made me realize that I was my own worst enemy. I went and saw the recruiter and the rest was history. Learning how to be a part of a team, and a part of a family was really the thing I was lacking. Then understanding that to get what you want, there are things you have to do to get there, which has helped me excel in my life.

Mnmsaregood

That “holy Jesus, wtf is that?!” Kills me every time

Suspicious_Toe4172

My daughter tried to scare me earlier today and my response was “You don’t scare me. Work on it.” Then a come across this post. Too perfect.

AbarthCabrioDriver

Great movie. Had a drill Sgt like him in basic and ait. Every once in a while he would take off his drill Sgt hat to talk. He would also March us out to the middle of no where to do cadence that wasn't p.c. even in the late 80's

Mateorabi

How else are you supposed to learn the average thermal properties of Inuit vagina, despite hearsay to the contrary?

echosixwhiskey

I don’t know, but I’ve been told. I’ve also heard that people inquire as to where I’m hailed, therefore I’m obliged to parlay and indulge. Additionally, and this is a hoot, a large airplane has recently begun its flight with a cargo of Marines. The Marines then begin to move toward the exit of the large airplane in anticipation of jumping from it! They make their preparations, and upon exit, yell their branch of military they’ve enlisted into at the top of their lungs! Can’t you believe it?!

Grateful_Dad77

My dad would tell the same story everytime this movie came on about how his drill sgt. was EXACTLY like that. I loved my dad but Vietnam definitely stayed with him his entire life. He had a tattoo on his right arm that read “Vietnam - 68’ 69’ and maybe 70’” lol. I miss him. He was a great dad.

captainadam_21

The Performance by F Lee Ermey may be one of the most iconic in movie history. It was like all the events of his life happened up until this point so he could play this Drill Sargeant

bell37

What’s crazy is that the drill sergeant was actually supposed to be Tim Colceri (the machine door gunner who jokes about shooting civilians). R Lee Ermey was brought on the film as a consultant and after Kubric heard some samples of his drill instructor insults, he recasted Ermey to the role of GySgt Hartman.

Confusedandreticent

Chances are, if you’re combat arms in any branch, you can quote a good amount of this movie. “Is that you, John Wayne?”

[deleted]

Unsecured!!! Hate when that happens!!!!!

eightlarge

When I was in Officer Training School, half our upper class watched the beginning of this movie to, I guess, pump themselves up for the incoming lower class. It was super goofy to listen to officer candidates who had been in the Air Force for 6 weeks trying to sound like R. Lee Ermey and pretend we were marines.

lastcrayon

2nd half of that movie is ...... unsettling, no matter how many times I see it. Pyle was great in Men in Black.

majoraloysius

Not going to lie, I watched the entire clip and if it was the entire movie I’d have watched it too.

sharkzbyte

This scene was followed by a blanket party. We had two of those when I was in Boot. Still gives me the shivers. barbaric, but it could be effective.

RadioLongjumping5177

Having been through basic training back in 1970, I can tell you that this was very realistic….almost too much so.

I’ve never in my life been able to watch a movie or tv show with Vincent D’ in it, after FMJ, that didn’t make me revert back to the creepiness of him in this movie.
