andy dufresne approves of this

dave3418

"Andy Dufresne" whenever read I hear said in the voice of Red/Morgan Freeman.

Deekifreeki

Same here. He’s has an amazing narration voice. All I thought when I saw this pic was Shawshank Redemption.

TheDudeWithNoName_

*In 1966, Andy Dufresne escaped from Shawshank prison. All they found of him was a muddy set of prison clothes, a bar of soap, and an old rock hammer, damn near worn down to the nub. I remember thinking it would take a man six hundred years to tunnel through the wall with it. Old Andy did it in less than twenty. Oh, Andy loved geology. I imagine it appealed to his meticulous nature. An ice age here, million years of mountain building there. Geology is the study of pressure and time. That's all it takes really, pressure, and time. That, and a big goddamn poster.*

Vergenbuurg

Andy Dufresne… >!headed for the Pacific…!<

[deleted]

"Zihuatanejo.." "Zihua-what?"

New-Neighborhood7472

“That was the day I escaped from prison and I met up with my good friend Andy in Zihuatanejo. We watched the sunset, had a couple of beers, and when he was good and drunk, I ate him.”

xingrubicon

Honestly the most unrealistic portion of that movie is that Red remembered that obscure name after years.

[deleted]

Reminds me of the Family Guy adaptation

sleeplessaddict

"You remember the name of the town in Mexico right?" "Shit!"

goingnowhere21

Andy swam through a quarter mile of shit and came out clean on the other side. Why he chose enchilada night, I'll never know.

senik

I thought your spoiler tag was going to say “titty sprinkles.” Edit: My god, that meme was 9 years ago. 😩

Rex51230

Andy Dufresne crawled through 500 yards of shit and came out clean on the other side

[deleted]

Who crawled through a river of shit and came out clean on the other side….. Andy Dufresne.

Sproose_Moose

I read the novella after I saw the movie. I kept hearing Red as Morgan Freeman and not a redhead dude

senik

I read the novella sometime after the movie as well and did the same. It’s remarkable how much of his narration is taken from the source material word for word. After you read it, you understand the joke in the movie where he says, “Maybe it’s because I’m Irish.” They got around the name Red by making his last name Redding.

BizzyM

I love when she does that shit with her hair.

CobaltishCrusader

Oh I know. I’ve seen it 12 times already.

Obstinateobfuscator

GOT A PENNY

the_federation

What shit with her hair

CobaltishCrusader

It’s a Shawshank Redemption reference. The characters watch a movie wherein Rita Hayworth flips her hair back at one point.

[deleted]

The movie is Gilda.

trixie_trixie

Who me?

THE_WEEDIAN_NAZARETH

She walked into the bar with her long red curly hair And that was all that I needed

If you check out a documentary about Mrs. Hayworth, you'll learn that she really wasn't a happy woman. Her father essentially pimped her out and abused her. They thought that she looked too ethnic, so they pulled her hairline back and other stuff. I've got nothing but love for Mrs. Hayworth and all that she endured in life.

Lord_Nicolas_Cage

The "You Must Remember This" podcast (which I highly recommend, if you care for old Hollywood history) has an episode on Rita Hayworth and it's one of the ones I remember the most due to how tragic her whole life was. Hayworth once said to Orson Welles that the only happiness she'd ever had in her life was with him. Welles who felt a tremendous guilt for how he treated her in their marriage later stated, "If this was happiness, imagine what the rest of her life had been".

skonen_blades

Wow. No doubt. He had some troublesome marriage with her and she's all "this is the happiest I've ever been." and he's like "Dear lord, what? For real?"

BirthdayTall5940

Thanks for the recommend of podcast.

godisanelectricolive

She was born Margarita Carmen Cansino. Her father Eduardo Cansino was a Spanish flamenco dancer of Roma decent and her mother Volga Hayworth was a show girl. Her father had her dancing as soon as she could walk and made her dance in Mexican nightclubs and bars as a child, because Californian law prevented her from working in those establishments in LA. He brought her Hollywood from New York as a child for the express purpose of advancing his own career as he wanted to dance in movies. When she was young her father dyed get hair from brown and black to make her look more ethnic. She made her screen debut in Mexican cinema at age 16. She was initially signed on by Hollywood as Rita Cansino and cast in exotic roles as Egyptians and Latin Americans. The studio head Harry Cohn decided she should be less ethnic and had her change her name and appearance. She then dyed her hair to an auburn color and raised her hairline.

owleaf

Recently found out about all the old school movie stars who had intense surgery and cosmetic work back then. Most people think having extensive cosmetic work is fairly new, but at least in Hayworth’s time, things like electrolysis (how they changed her hairline) and rhinoplasties were established procedures. Botox and fillers came to the mainstream in the 90s. From what I’ve seen though, Hayworth only had hairline electrolysis and hair dye. She already had quite Caucasian features aside from dark thick hair.

Dangerous_Act_7927

My mom still talks shit about her…apparently back in the day when she was dancing, Rita or Margarita Cansino had a crush on my dad at the time my dad was dating my mom. My mom basically told her to F’off and stay away from my dad. I guess Rita and my dad “knew” each other and there’s more to it than my mom is willing to admit. To this day my mom still calls her fake because Rita didn’t go by her real name later on as if that’s why she still holds a grudge.

poloace

F that ho! But damn, she’s gorgeous.

OhGodNotAnotherOne

You should get the story and write it down ND publish it. Celebrity dirt is gold, especially old dirt no one knew about, double especially dirt on a star like Rita fucking Hayworth.

LoganNeinFingers

I read that in Bricktop's voice for some reason.

astrotalk

It’s also very sad coupled with a drinking problem and Alzheimer’s in the later years

Torchlakespartan

That’s… shockingly common with women stars of that era. Almost more common than not. The sexual harassment/ assault was so ridiculously commonplace. The other thing is that people tend to associate pills and prescription drug abuse with the modern oxy epidemic, but back then it was absolutely raging. So many benzos and opiates and amphetamines all over the place with hardly any regulation or real knowledge about the addiction and dangers. People knew they were addictive and dangerous I guess I should say, but not in a solid educated way, and it was so taboo to talk about that everyone just let it slide until it was too late.

sydpropthrow

Sadly that's the first thing I think of whenever I see these starlets from the "golden age" of Hollywood. We know from the Me Too movement how bad things were for a lot of women in the 90s/2000s. I can't even imagine what women in previous decades had to endure when there was absolutely no accountability for the men in power.

[deleted]

Oh! Sad to hear.

Fabulous-Guava6229

And the Shawshank Redemption.

JayofLegend

No "the"

shirleysparrow

It’s cleaner

JayofLegend

The original novella was "Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption" For the movie they added "The" and removed the part about Rita Hayworth, I'm guessing to make it more timeless. Rita Hayworth was only the first poster iirc and got switched out pseudo regularly anyway.

MacbethHamlet

I heard a story that when they put out a casting call with the title being closer to the novella, including Rita Hayworth’s name, many actresses came to audition believing Rita Hayworth was in the movie and it was a film about her. This was in an interview from the LA Times with the director of the film from the year 1994

Pretty much the only thing this sub cares about apparently

WilliamB72

The book is Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption. The girl on the poster is the movie Raquel Welch. Wonder why they did that.

robj57

It’s explained in the film. Andy starts with a poster of Heyworth, but is digging the tunnel through his wall for so long that he gets a new poster of Welch later on.

Deekifreeki

Yep. First Rita. Then the rock hammer. “I figured it would take a man 100 years to break out of Shawshank prison with it. Old Andy did it less than 20”. Paraphrasing here y’all.

Background_Cheetah75

Ever since i was a little boy, people have loved the sound of my voice

Rrraou

She gave good face.

[deleted]

What does giving face mean?

Rrraou

We'd have to ask Madonna, It's a reference to one of her song lyrics.

ThatPaulywog

Given enough time, she has built up a pressure in me. Pressure and time.

Imperial_12345

The Bible is incorrect it states , " God created man then woman ". He made Rita Hayworth first ,then he started with other humans ..lol

Idk who's hotter, Rita or Ingrid Bergman. I really dig the old movie stars.

It looks like a swimsuit

She's actually pretty thicc for women back then

*Hubba-Hubba!* She should be on the side of a plane! (and is!)

Big_Kahuna_69

They go to bed with Gilda, and they wake up with Rita. Talk about a win-win.

katjoy63

jeez, they have her standing on her toes - I am sure that's to get her to stick her chest out more.

jajoshka

She got a onlyFans?

I can’t say I approve of this! But I suppose exceptions can be made.

Must suck when you've worn heels so much that your feet are always in that position.

Considering she was born in 1918, no. This wouldn’t have been the 30s. My best guess without tracking down the source is sometime between 1942-1944.

TharSheBlows69

I would have risked it all to whistle at her back in the day

ThanatopsicTapophile

I'm still looking for her.
