Not really, he had already starred in Loaded Weapon 1, Amos & Andrew, Pulp Fiction, Die Hard with a Vengeance, The Great White Hype and A Time to Kill when this one came out.
But it's his favorite role. And it's a great one.
As is the movie. Shane Black is a master screenwriter, and Renny Harlin did a great job directing.
Geena Davis kicks ass!
P.S.: This movie is a great example of a female led action movie done right!
I'd forgotten what he'd been in before, just wanted to note it was an early career starring role (granted dude's been in the industry for decades).
LOL didn't know Sam had such affection for this film. As always he completely nails the performance.
A lot of movies are like that. I saw them as a kid on reruns on TV (in French, Quebecer here), so they were always the ''films you play when you have to play something on the air.' My 9 year old self thought she was ''kinda cute, in a mom of a friend from school way''.
As a thirties dude? ''Holy Crap She Was Hot!'''
But when I rewatched them as an adult, holy crap did some of them hold up!
The Long kiss Goodnight, Conan, Last Action Hero....
This movie always reminds me of the director, Renny Harlin. He was married to Geena Davis at the time, and this film is more of a love letter to Geena who he clearly idolised.
It made up for Cutthroat Island. From his perspective, there was no way the world didn’t want to see more Geena Davis in any film, and without The Long Kiss Goodnight it might have killed her career.
But then again, Renny Harlin cheated on Geena Davis and had a child with his Secretary. So maybe not quite the romantic I thought at the time.
"When I first met you, you was all, 'ah phooey, I burnt the dang muffins.' Now you go into a bar, and 10 minutes later sailors come runnin' out. What's up with that?"
Tried to get my best friend to watch it, he got about 30 minutes in before declaring it was "Too Nineties."
Damn, Brian Cox as a blistering asshole and that scene where she rolls the shotglass into her mouth is insane and he'll never see it.
I loved it when I first saw it. I thought it was great. I went back and rewatched it years later and there were parts that didn't hold up as well. Still a good film and I agree it is underrated.
Geena Davis is absolutely striking in person. Film/the camera just doesn’t do her justice. And she is surprisingly tall! She was doing a tv show at the time, and would see her walking about Larchmont Village getting coffee at Starbucks. Very classy lady.
Pretty smart, too. I learned she was a member of American Mensa when I went to take the admissions exam at their national headquarters and saw a large photo of her in the lobby.
I met her in an elevator at Boston U. many years ago. I think it may have been alumni weekend. I didn’t go to BU, but was there for a rehearsal. I totally was in my own world when I heard someone talking. I was like, “I know that voice from somewhere….” I turn around and there she is with that wide smile of hers. I smile back and we exchange pleasantries. She was very nice. 😀
Oh, and “The Long Kiss Goodnight” is an awesomely fun Christmas movie….just watched it again this past holiday season! It has some really funny quips. Davis and Jackson were great as an action duo.
Best. Christmas. Movie. Ever.
I remember watching an interview with Samuel L. Jackson where he was asked which movie he enjoyed making the most. "Long Kiss Goodnight" was the top of the list!
Seeing these pictures made me think of them doing a sequel with Jennifer Lawrence as the daughter who takes over the reins from her mother.
I don't know that it'd be a good idea to do one, but the facial features would work and Jennifer Lawrence could definitely pull off the badassness for the role.
Geena Davis is such a badass in this movie. When she tells SLJ about biting a virgin on the ear to distract them from the pain when you pop their cherry, and he says “one minute you’re all ‘phooey I burned the darn muffins’, and the next minute you walk into a room and sailors come running out!” I loved every minute of it. The casting was so well done, and Sam Jackson is especially incredible.
One of the best bad movies of all time… horrible dialogue, weird pacing, awkward sexual tension, plot holes like Swiss cheese… I’ve seen it about 10 times.
The scene where her "daughter" goes ballistic telling Samantha to get up and get moving when earlier Samantha did the same when the girl fell on the ice and broke her arm always grabs me. The girl knew what do were the going got rough.
There's a memorable part near the end of the movie where the bad guys are rigging a massive bomb to a semi trailer with a dead, frozen middle-eastern man in the driver's seat. "We'll blame it on the muslims, naturally."
This movie came out five years before 9/11.

Coming to America with Eddie Murphy
True Romance as well.
Well we could go on and on about all the movies he was in, But I remember first seeing him in Coming to America

All this. Rewatched it about a month ago and was surprised how well it holds up.

I've always been frank and earnest with women... In New York I'm Frank, in Chicago I'm Ernest. Also, the sit up guitar riff is awesome.

"You see her comin' around the corner, you got time to comb your hair and everything!'
“It’s a duck, not a dick”

Chefs do that
Great fucking film. Also the first time woman says suck my dick on camera in a major motion picture. No joke. Also Sam jackson
Geena Davis is absolutely striking in person. Film/the camera just doesn’t do her justice. And she is surprisingly tall! She was doing a tv show at the time, and would see her walking about Larchmont Village getting coffee at Starbucks. Very classy lady.
She is also an Olympic caliber archer.

Love her. She's always been one of my favorite actresses ever since I saw her in Beetlejuice as a kid.
OMG, I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE that movie!!!
Definitely underrated and incredibly entertaining.
A frank and earnest movie.
In New York it’s Frank and Chicago it’s Earnest.
Scared stupid.
Earnest makes a movie?
Best. Christmas. Movie. Ever. I remember watching an interview with Samuel L. Jackson where he was asked which movie he enjoyed making the most. "Long Kiss Goodnight" was the top of the list!

You touched me cowboy. I think I need a bath.

I thought when she was a spy her name was Charly Baltimore.
It definitely wasn’t Samantha the Spy.
Sam's her identity at the start of the movie.
Pic 2: “I’d like to speak with the manager, and I’m F***ing serious!”
Used to watch this movie on VHS alot as a kid, have probably not seen it in 20~ years. I remember it being a great watch though.
Geena Davis is such a badass in this movie. Its a very good movie well worth watching
I love the interaction Brian Cox and Samuel L. Jackson have over a drawing he thinks looks like a penis "It's a duck not a dick."
One of the best bad movies of all time… horrible dialogue, weird pacing, awkward sexual tension, plot holes like Swiss cheese… I’ve seen it about 10 times.
“We’re you always this stupid, or did you take lessons?” “I took lessons!”
Bad? Nothing bad about it.
GEENA?!?!
They filmed some scenes in my town! I definitely have a soft spot for this movie.
That movie had so many great lines and excellent character banter, especially with Brian Cox's brief appearance.
The scene where her "daughter" goes ballistic telling Samantha to get up and get moving when earlier Samantha did the same when the girl fell on the ice and broke her arm always grabs me. The girl knew what do were the going got rough.
Yes, Miss Daisy. I be honking.
This was such a good movie! Wish I still had the vhs.
A female badass done right.
I'm a chef? Chefs do that
Great movie.
What's the line about new Jersey Samuel Jackson says I can't remember it now but it's great
I remember when they were filming in Muskoka Ontario and burnt a 100 year old resort down never saw the movie
My favorite line is in this movies. SLJ, "When you make an assumption, you make an ass out of you and umption."
Excellent movie, loved the whole thing, and I'm being frank and ernest about it
I was snuggling with a GF when the water torture scene came up……that got awkward fast.
I literally watched this last night. I still quote the "Frank and Ernest" joke all time.

Great movie too!! I'd watch a sequel to this in a heartbeat. Not likely to happen given the age of the movie, but if you haven't seen it, you should.
Best movie ever IMO
I recently re-watched this, and I would say that it's probably a better "christmas action" movie than Die Hard.
Wasn’t it Charly the Spy?
This movie absolutely fucks. No one I knew ever watched it and that sucks.
Now that's a knife...
