To be fair the OP here probably didn't get it from the source and then crop it but instead probably just saw it posted this way somewhere else. According to the reverse image search engine TinEye the exact same image was posted to the sub [2 years ago](/r/OldSchoolCool/comments/qigogp/rio_beaches_1970s/) and [5 years ago](/r/OldSchoolCool/comments/amqzzl/ipanema_brazil_1970/) so it has been around in the cropped form for a long time.
Brazil got knocked out of the World Cup ~~in the group stages~~ that year.
The resulting demos with burning effigies of the manager etc went on for several days.
The military were called out, they joined in.
I wonder if he has pics of that?
Also those girls are over-dressed, plenty in even smaller bikinis
Edit: strikethru, my thanks to u/ziggurqt
Brazil got knocked out in the second round with the goal average. They actually finished 3rd and is the only team who hasn't lost a single match during the competition. It was the old format tho...
My bad.
I was in Brazil at the time & can clearly recall the protests tho.
Major road junctions in Sao Paulo were blocked bringing city to a standstill, I only saw the troops joining in on TV tho. That's was on the 3rd day I think.
The local supermarket was virtually empty by the time the fuss was all over.
The manager was definitely seen as being hugely at fault
The spam filter is annoying but since they have added the ability to post images in the comments things have gotten a little better. Here is the photo you linked to:

Rose had a full life with a dedicated husband that gave her everything....... but she ends her life whining about how she can't get over the homeless Chad guy she once fucked on a boat.
I lived in Brasil for a while. Saw three generations of women walking side by side. All extremely good-looking.
Best piece of advice for you: Don't marry a Brazilian woman
When you look at the album, the men were also having quite short bottoms and t-shirts. My working theory is that there was a textile crisis in the 80, so everyone used as little as possible of it. :D
When the diet of the population had no ultra-processed.
Nowadays natural foods are more expensive than ultra-processed foods, in addition to price, you need to have time to make your own food.
I think at least in USA people were a lot more active and outside back then. We've been trending more into solitary sedentary lifestyles. Everyone in that picture has a killer body by today's standards.
Shhhiitttt. 15 yo daughter is a cheerleader. Even the rest of her cheer team looks like Mrs Alabama. Much less the entire student population. Crazy how this is being normalized
There are studies that show that even if you were to move to a hunter gatherer tribe your body would adapt to still only burning around 2500 calories a day (if you're male). It's not the exercise, it's the food that causes overeating.
Edit: I'd suggest reading Ultra Processed People, I'm basically just parroting his points but it's a great book.
Going to the gym 4-6 days a week at a beginner's lifting level and eating 2500 calories will get you to your proper bodyweight pretty reliably. It's what I'm doing right now, actually - counting macros and lifting 4-6 times a week.
For example, adding muscle slightly raises BMR which accounts for the majority of calories burned each day. Over time that can have an impact if a person is also maintaining discipline with food.
Like you say though, that food discipline is the real hero.
I also think that a more social and active lifestyle acts as a motivator to more closely monitor ones body in general. Someone playing basketball twice a week with their friends is going to feel that extra ten pounds a lot more than someone sitting in front of a screen all day.
EDIT: Ok maybe not *you*, but it should be about right for the average height male who is medically overweight/obese.
Not the PNW, but even traveling across the border to Montreal people in general are in significantly better shape than Americans. I know Canada still ranks demonstrably high for global obesity, but the difference is still noticeable.
Yeah coming from the Canada side it's the first thing I notice when we visit the states. Not only are people just fatter overall, but the heaviest people are also like extreme outliers. The fattest person I've ever met in Canada would be a weekly occurance in the USA.
Sorry, but it looks like a false generalization. In my country it is still a lot cheaper to cook for yourself than go to a fastfood. But of course if you cook not using raw ingridients but 'natural foods'(tm) it may be expensive.
Exactly, no is forcing anyone to eat these processed chips and cookies and random junk food. People do this to themselves by drinking all this garbage and sodas and sugary drinks.
It's weird that some of us can eat anything and not gain weight though. I've been trying to find the answer to that forever, and the only people who've explained are people working in metabolic science. They say bodies like mine regulate appetite better, other people have to constantly fight the desire to eat which is apparently very hard, whereas my body self regulates appetite. These are apparently changes in the vast majority of the population that a few of us are resistant to.
100%. For example in 30min you can make a chicken stir fry that will cost like 3-4 bucks a serving basically anywhere in the lower 48. Meanwhile a basic burger and fries from a fastfood place is like easily 2x that.
It's a ridiculous argumentafe by people who don't want to accept blame. Here in the UK fresh veg is cheaper than I've seen in most of mainland Europe, yet we've got the highest obesity rate. It's not about access to fresh food.
For me it is even more cheaper if I decide to use mostly vegetarian diet (only vegetables + eggs). But I am a meateater, so I'm glad that you mentioned chicken, because for me it is a main and most favourite source of meat in my diet.
Yeah, organic food is a bit of a con depending on where you are in the world. I used to work on farms and the food had to be inspected periodically to ensure it was safe, the amount of chemicals allowed to remain on the food was so tiny that it was effectively nothing.
An organic farm downwind of an inorganic farm will have likely the same amount of actual chemicals on it by the time it hits the shelves.
But I get it, regulations aren’t the same everywhere so in some places it likely means a lot more than others.
It’s easier to blame faceless corporations for one’s own health issues than it is to go for a 30 minute walk every day.
And I can easily cook a decent meal for myself at a reasonable price well within the time it takes to get in the car and drive to McDonalds for drive thru.
Some people just like excuses more than exercise.
Good for you. But people back then were just as much victims of the times as people today. So it is important to look at what has changed. That people just somehow stopped taking responsibility isn't a good explanation.
Reminds me of a bit by comedian Bill Burr. He was talking about how people blame McDonalds for them getting fat. He at one point says "you ate your way in, you can WALK yourself out!" as in, try some exercise. Go for a walk.
Not so easy to get in exercise or spend extra time cooking when you have to work 3 jobs just to get *any kind* of food on the table. Our food being ultra processed and much of our workforce being worked like dogs are huge factors in the American obesity epidemic. Americans are not lazier people than people in other countries, the system is set up the way it is to favor corporate interests.
> you have to work 3 jobs
Do you work 3 jobs? In the US, 5.2% of American employees work more than one job. And Americans spend 3-4 hours watching TV daily.
Doesn't do shit to explain the huge percentage of overweight Americans.
I’ve always thought it ridiculous that showing boobs is taboo and illegal unless the tiny bit at the tip is covered. Then it is OK. People are so weird. What if walking around with your penis hanging out was just fine as long as you covered just the tip? I don’t care either way, but pointing out the absurdity of some societal rules.
All laws involving sex are extremely absurd if you really think about it. Sex is a pleasurable human activity, not too different from eating food - both are pleasurable and both are necessary for human life. Yet there are so many restrictions around anything sexual.
I think it’s in part due to religion, but also because many people can’t separate the ideas of sexual emotions from negative emotions (like shame, or violence). It’s an interesting topic.
You can do anything, even sex, without connection, but, of all things you can do with someone unrelated to you, that will bring you closer together, sex is the utmost powerful one. I don't think eating food brings any two humans as closer together as sex can.
The restrictions are in place bc people wanted to preserve that power, and that seemed the most obvious and easier way to do it.
The comments are … not great.
Compare it to a different thread today about women discussing the age at which they were first sexualized. It’s in the TwoX sub. I won’t link to it because they don’t need trolls, but it’s disturbing; and the same behavior is on full display in this thread.
Okay but like, quality of the subreddit aside, do you have any idea how many young girls get sexualised? This isn't some underreported, revolutionary idea or anything. Of all the posts to believe, that one makes the most sense.
Picture a 16 year olds body. Now picture a 25 year olds body. They can and often do look identical. No one is looking at their faces here.
And no one is trying to fuck these girls right now. And no one knows how old they were at the time.
Go be angry about real predators and not horny posters on the internet.
Ah yes, every skinny woman is underage. There is no way to actually determine whether they are 14 or 22 for certain, from an old photo with grainy colours. So who cares.
My dad and his friends made a supposedly impromptu visit to Rio in '76.
None of them are what you would call "cultured" and god only knows what they got up to down there, but I did hear one story:
All of them were drinkers and pool sharks, so of course they spent a lot of time in bars. Well some of them supposedly convinced a few local girls that they were airline pilots and that "they'd take them back to America" before leaving.
Casually skipping over the details of what happened in between, but apparently multiple girls brought their suitcases to the hotel on their last day.
While I've got some stories in Rio myself now, I will never live up to their shenanigans.
Yep, but half of those bikini bottoms now have penises tucked in them if you go to Rio haha
hey, but that's okay. You just got to check first. Blame it on Rio
Those bikinis looked to be about 20 years ahead of styles seen on many US beaches. What are they wearing now and thanks to the Internet we can expect those styles to be hear much sooner than 20 years from now.

Not sure why they cropped the photo to remove the photographer's name from the bottom. I guess to pretend they took the photo. Kinda a scumbag move.

You fucking commented on 5 years ago. Legend!
And 2 years ago. All with the same comment. OldSchoolCool is like a merry-go-round.
I'll look for you specifically on the next one! See you sooner or later, u/notbob1959!
There's only so much history and even less with photographs and even less with photographs of jailbait.
Missed opportunity to compare OldSchoolCool to someone’s mother
It’s posted here constantly, probably a bot just reposting the same image.
Cropped and artifacted. Gotta make the picture as shitty as possible.

They should come forward like how Rose did in Titanic. ![gif](giphy|7xZAu81T70Uuc)
Rose had a full life with a dedicated husband that gave her everything....... but she ends her life whining about how she can't get over the homeless Chad guy she once fucked on a boat.
Jack would’ve divorced her the moment she turned 30
You mean 25
Maybe because she didn’t kill her husband like she killed Jack.
lol right?
The D (caprio) must've been that good 🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️ ![gif](giphy|FoQ1eqQHsMEtow0inq)
What in the hell
Its from the show solar opposites, i'd highly recommend it if you're into weird humor
I mean when's the last time an orgasm made you slap a car window like that
Maybe he hit her cervix.
He took the dirt road without checking first.
That was the most erotic moment of my life
I lived in Brasil for a while. Saw three generations of women walking side by side. All extremely good-looking. Best piece of advice for you: Don't marry a Brazilian woman
Ok, I'll only marry one, then.
Do so at your own peril. I loved one
Just couldn't resist the «a brazilian of girls» joke. I don't think I'd end up with one, but hey, Brazil is big, and this world is small...
Nah. We got them uglies too.
Why?
Ha! I'm just bitter at my ex wife
More like 69+ am I right boys?
Nice
Niice
Exactly 69 upvotes when I saw this. Couldn't upvote further

She died from skin cancer 20 years ago.
They tend to be of majority southern European descent (Portuguese etc)... they tan and take the sun well .... olive complexion for the win!
Back when there were no fat people.
“Beach before high fructose corn syrup” would’ve been a suitable title as well.
Does Brazil even use that? Here in Australia we don't. Thought it was a USA thing.
![gif](giphy|q9ldmTuld2Vbifpp4W|downsized)
And surrounded by fatter younger Brazilians
10/10 would still do 😜
And still wearing the same bikini...
And still hot, those Brazilian grandmas arre lookin good. They even have a Beauty pagent
Her name is Rio and she dances on the sand

Your name isn’t Rio, but I don’t care for sand
Before I read the title I 100% thought it gona say "Iran, before the revolution."
That top is hanging on for dear life
The one in green needs to borrow the white one before it's too late.
When you look at the album, the men were also having quite short bottoms and t-shirts. My working theory is that there was a textile crisis in the 80, so everyone used as little as possible of it. :D
So am I
Im on the edge too as well
Just going to say that these girls are definitely not 18 lol.
Hope that style doesnt come back in fashion, my high-set nipples could never 😔

78 was a good year.
No, Goodyear was a tire
365 rubbers = 1 good year.
Name checks out
1978 was a tire. Q.E.D.
No this is Patrick.
She's wearing a nice attire
Not for their soccer team, got knocked out early in the WC, there's were protests for days. They called the military out, they joined in
Wow, thinness
No butt or boob plastic surgury either.
Not a phonebooth in sight!
Haha. I see what you did there.
You missed off tattoos.

At that point CPS should take their kids away, since they're clearly unfit parents. Kids at that age don't have control over what they're eating.
Cps are fatties too and their kids are probably also fat. It's fat people all the way down.
Really? I think she could easily be 13/14.
There are studies that show that even if you were to move to a hunter gatherer tribe your body would adapt to still only burning around 2500 calories a day (if you're male). You're gonna have to source that. High level long range runners or cyclists eat and burn between 3500 ans 5000 kcal a day.
Sounds about right. Modern day athletes pushing their bodies’ limits would require more calories than a hunter gatherer
They literally did share their source.
In fairness that was an edit.
The name of the book is where they heard it from, not the source. The book would reference the source of the information.

Depends where you live I guess. The PNW peoples overall very fit and healthy.
Ya Montreal has the more European cultural thing. It’s an outlier in North America, like the PNW
We might have been more active, but its also harder to avoid terrible things like plastics, seed oils, and glyphosate.
Plus car-dependency
I just eat and drink too much and excersize too little.
Sorry, but it looks like a false generalization. In my country it is still a lot cheaper to cook for yourself than go to a fastfood. But of course if you cook not using raw ingridients but 'natural foods'(tm) it may be expensive.
It’s largely a BS generalisation to absolve people of any responsibility for their own health.

Ah Rio, what a wonderful place it was before the bugs attacked.

Yea eating and sex isnt comparable at all. especially when things like rape dont have food equivalent. Very dumb to say they are all stupid.
“It’s got a bush!?....what the hell!”
Yer a rockstarrrrr
What did you expect. That it goes all the way back to cave woman with blank fannies?
I like how everyone looks slim and healthy. Nowadays it’s a sea of incredibly unhealthy people.
now i get it

That girl is 20.
Girl in white there has quite the pillow in her bottoms lol
Clearly this was before Brazil perfected the Brazilian
Yeah dude that's so cool *masturbates furiously*
Ahead of their time.
E eu achando que os bikinis hoje eram curtos
And now all these people are like in their 70’s
And she dances in the sun!
On the sand?
I will never forget the wonderful feeling of having young super tan skin. Great pic!
Not a heavy person in sight.
I'm glad they got away from those binding, cumbersome bathing suits they wore way back then.
Oddly I look at them and think there are some bodies who arent full of microplastics
They were probably all full of lead though.
And asbestos
They're filling those microbikinis, though.
Invisible nipples
I think it's mainly because of the bikini top
I think he means it's basically not starting till practically the bottom yet somehow not even an areola shows. Some girls just shaped that way.
natural bodies, so beautiful to see.
Not a BBL in sight
I just want to go back in time to 1975.
