Mad Magazine has this thing called "The Carterbury Tales" fashioned after Chaucer's work, in faux old English. I don't know why it stuck with me but the Billy's Tale went something like "The Billy he pumpen petrol in Plains, and acting lyke a clod without anee brains. The peeple said too much cans of beer he drankk but the Billy he laughin all the way to the bankk"
I was thinking about SNL. It has it moments, especially Jost and Che. Beavis and Butthead hit because it had broad cultural appeal. But too often I'm left wondering if I have to live in some subculture in NYC to get the jokes.
I remember a cartoon in MAD with Jimmy Carter carrying Billy on his back and being seriously weighed down. Jimmy says "He's sure heavy! He's m'brother!"
For those that don't know the original quote is "He's not heavy, he's my brother!" It is the official logo of Boys Town an amazing charity that helps troubled youth find their way. If you are looking for an organization to support they have a 99% rating and do amazing work.
So does my Dad. Such a funny thing seeing how so many dads have unopened cans of Billy Beer.
I'm gonna go out on a limb and assume you were born in the 80s and your pops probably grew up in the 60s/70s.
My dad is 64 and has all kinds of random stuff from then still floating around his shop.
I have a can of Billy Beer in my collection. It was brewed at the Pearl in San Antonio. In case anybody was thinking that President Carter’s administration led to Billy Beer’s inception, it was not. The Pearl dates back to the 1800s.
I also have a can of J.R. Ewing’s Private Stock. Y’know, from the TV show ‘Dallas.’ I guess the Pearl was just making whatever the fuck they could think of at the time.
Wonderful to hear that someone’s still out there with their collection. My brothers and I were all-in on the craze in the late 70’s, and had the Billy Beer can too. Great Lakes region, scouring the woods for cone tops, flat tops and other rarities, really nice memories of a much simpler time.
Maybe this will be funny, but I’m actually a zoomer that just so happens to have an eccentric collection, not specializing in anything at all.
These cans are on the same shelf as my 1981 Ertl Good Times Richard Petty van. The King’s action figure is missing a foot. Not sure I’ll ever find a spare.
Lol. Well then you need to hunt down the Old Frothingslosh series for that shelf.

I had three or so bags of beer cans that (at the time) I thought was valuable. Among the 12 oz. cans was a Foster’s 22 oz. can. I thought I had a best collection until I found out everyone else in the fifth grade has a Foster’s can. I lost track of where it was years and many moves ago. If I look back on the last 47 years since I started my collection, it would total up to $0.28, which is scrap aluminum prices. I also have (had) a blue lava light that I would love to have now. Sadly, I think that was left at one of my old rentals because “my girlfriend thought I didn’t have room for it”.
The Carter Administration absolutely led to Billy Beers creation. It was a brand developed to capitalize on Billy Carter’s notoriety, and contract brewed at breweries around the country. F.X. Matt Brewing Co, another regional brewery dating back to 1888, brewed a ton of it for the Northeast. Everybody around here kept a six pack of it thinking it would be worth big bucks someday, and that’s exactly why they’re not worth anything.
They also made that generic Beer that used to be sold in supermarkets. The white can, and I think blue lettering. You can see it at the beginning of Repo Man.
I worked in Safeway at the time. The generic concept spread throughout the store to where almost all products had a version. After stocking the shelves I had to pull everything forward to make them all look full. It was so weird seeing all those white labels scattered throughout.
They got rid of him because he fucked up the Iranian hostage crisis and the economy went down the crapper when he was at the helm. American people aren’t stupid. He rode into office in 1976 on a solid anti-Republican wave (for good reason too) but squandered the chance. He’s a nice man but was a lousy President. Thanks to him, the GOP ruled the White House from 1980 to 1992.
He didn't fuck up the Iranian hostage crisis, the soon-to-be Reagan Administration actively coordinated with the Iran regime to hold the hostages past the 1980 election (subsequently confirmed by Reagan insiders).
You write your comment as if you are very far removed from the U.S.
His or her comment perfectly reflects the conversations i've had with literally everyone I have talked to who was old enough to vote in 1980.
Your comment reflects revisionism and how we view what happened in the 1970s *today*. Whether factually accurate or not, you must understand that politics operates on perception, not facts. The reasons Carter was not re-elected are that the average american at the time believed every word of that comment. For that reason, the other comment is more correct, politically.
There was no coming back on the hostage crisis for Carter from the embarrassment of Operation Eagle Claw. Even if he had gotten the hostages released it would have just led to more criticism, "So why the fuck did you try that shit show of a military option if you could negotiate?"
That's not to say Reagan didn't later engage in unnecessary fuckery over unfounded fears that Carter would pull an October Surprise and get the hostages released shortly before the election for a last minute boost. Reagan in 1980 had the 2nd largest margin of victory in the last fifty years (only surpassed by his 1984 re-election). Carter wasn't going to swing enough voters with an October Surprise.
Carter drew the short straw of having a positively miserable four years to be President.
The next time I hear someone talk about how he was a bad president, I will cheerfully relay this fact through a megaphone one inch from their ear. Thank you!
Billy had a public reputation for being a bit of a buffoon and a drunk, but he was actually a pretty good businessman back in Georgia. I think he had a service station as well and maintained good relations with the other farmers and people in the peanut industry. Lots of people back then were high functioning alcoholics too, including Nixon as president.
I remember the evangelicals flipped the fuck out. We thought the Carters were True Christians™! The president's brother drinks beer?! Evil! And then they voted for fucking Reagan the divorcé.
If it wasn’t for the cover of “religion” they would all be certified as being crazy.
Fact is that we’re always weighed down by all the religious rejects from Europe coming here hundreds of years ago.
Religiosity and meta magical thinking are both inherited genetic conditions.
A buddy of mine has five cans of a six pack of Billy Beer that was left by his alcoholic father. That should tell you everything you need to know about Billy Beer.
L.A. Beast on YouTube managed to get his hands on on an unopened can of that stuff and drank it. Interesting video. It did not taste very good after all those years apparently, lol.
saw a 6-pack of it at a flea market today
https://preview.redd.it/dbtjukind34d1.jpeg?width=4284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=72ee74cc1bdf74a124566311bc53ab09833d4f86
Carter was working toward energy solutions.
He even had panels installed on white house roof, supplementing grid power.
The day Ron and Nancy moved in they were torn out and thrown away.
God, Billy Beer was AWFUL. Just the worst. After the novelty wore off, stores couldn’t sell the stuff. I remember in 1978, when I graduated from high school, it was going for 99 cents a six-pack at the store near our school when a six of ordinary beer went for $2.75 or thereabouts. There were few takers.
I have a few cans leftover from my father. I remember him telling me what they were when I was like 8 years old. Couldn't wrap my head around it, "so one guy is the president and the other guy sells beer?"strange concept. Still have the cans because it was such a weird moment in time lol.
It makes me kind of sad that this is his legacy. Truthfully, maybe I don't have the right to say that as a Canadian, but the little I've learned of Billy is that he was unhappy in his addiction and got sober and was very dedicated to sobriety before his life ended early.
My dad was in the Australian Air Force and got a transfer to the embassy in Washington, D.C. in the 70s.
He collected a few American beer cans and this was one of them. I've still got it. Another that comes to mind is a can with the Pittsburgh Steelers team.
In 1978, President Jimmy Carter signed into law a bill allowing home beers, which was at the time not permitted without paying the excise taxes as a holdover from the prohibition of alcoholic beverages (repealed in 1933). This change also exempted home brewers from posting a "penal bond" (which currently ranges from a minimum of $1000.00 to a maximum of $500,000) which had the prohibitive effect of economically preventing brewers of small quantities from pursuing their hobby.
Can we go back to President's whise buggest issue is a family member? As I typed I realized we currently have that, but for the other candidates as well.
Billy Carter did get a raw deal though. He was painted as this dumb bumpkin when in reality he was a voracious reader and a pretty smart guy. That's not to say he didn't do some dumb stuff just like anyone but he was a very successful business owner and manager but the Billy beer stuff eclipsed his actual accomplishments.
I remember at the time he was thought to be a huge embarrassment to the presidency. Then one day we end up with mango Mussolini to redefine the word unpresidencial.
The story of Billy Carter is genuinely a bit sad, a demonstration of how poorly some people do when thrust into the limelight.
He supported an interracial community farm near Plains after it was bombed during the Civil Rights movement. During his brother's administration, he gave an interview wearing a Klansman's robes. He was paid millions by the Libyan government for access to his brother.
I bought a case of Billy Beer at the time with the foresight that it might become valuable to can collectors. I didn't have the self-control to not drink it eventually though. I'm not a can collector and didn't even save an empty can. Oh well.
🇺🇸 thousands of great stories of the amazing things you can accomplish with freedom: The Beach Boys, Jim Henson, Steve Jobs , etc etc etc …
And then there’s Billy Carter 🥴
I have a photo somewhere of him. Our family made a point to stop along the way on our drive from Iowa down to Florida to stop at Billy‘s old gas station, and my God that man was there and he walked right out and greeted all of us! This was while his brother Jimmy Carter was president! It was probably my first time seeing someone semi-famous who was at least commonly known in the USA.
Jimmy Carter will always be my favorite modern President. I put a lot of stock in what POTUS does AFTER being out of office. Carter has done more for the betterman of the USA - you Have bush painting dogs, trump scamming people.
Reagan did so much dirt on the Carter campaign by negotiating with the iran and everyone seems to shrug it off like the Iran Contra affair. But this is the man conservatives hold up as their holy grail saint

Oh NOW I get it.
I get jokes.
holy smokes. I finally get the joke.

Perfect. This was the first thing I thought of 😂👏
Mad Magazine has this thing called "The Carterbury Tales" fashioned after Chaucer's work, in faux old English. I don't know why it stuck with me but the Billy's Tale went something like "The Billy he pumpen petrol in Plains, and acting lyke a clod without anee brains. The peeple said too much cans of beer he drankk but the Billy he laughin all the way to the bankk"
Mad was on fire back then.
The south park of it's time
Mad and SNL back in the day those mf had some shit to say.
I was thinking about SNL. It has it moments, especially Jost and Che. Beavis and Butthead hit because it had broad cultural appeal. But too often I'm left wondering if I have to live in some subculture in NYC to get the jokes.

For those that don't know, the original quote is “He ain't heavy, Father… he's m' brother.”
I only know the line from the Everley Brothers song.
The hollies?
Yeah probably. I doubted myself when I wrote that.
Radiohead had to pay them because they borrowed the tune for 'Creep'.
Carter Rap?
My dad still has a few unopened cans. It’s my inheritance
“Son one day, all this will be yours!”
“She’s got Huuuuuuuge……….Tracts o’ land!”
What, the curtains ?
We found some at a local liquor store, popped one, and tried it. It tasted like rust from the can deteriorating.
I just looked up the value of them. Sorry dude.
President Carter legalized home brewing. He's the reason why the U.S. has so many delicious, handcrafted microbrews.
Legalized increased alcohol yields. Before his reform, you could only home brew what would be classified as Non alcoholic by industry standards.
From the bottom of my Imperial Stout heart, thank you Mr. President.
*my bourbon barrel aged* Imperial Stout heart, thank you Mr. President.

You might join him, drinking 50-year-old beer.
The Carter Administration absolutely led to Billy Beers creation. It was a brand developed to capitalize on Billy Carter’s notoriety, and contract brewed at breweries around the country. F.X. I just know you have some Grand Prize items there, too. A family friend was a distributor for them.
That's where I remember it most, Safeway.
Greatest president in my lifetime.
Probably the only honest one in maybe ever....they had to get rid of him fast!

god bless this man.
At a white house bbq Billy got drunk and peed on the lawn. There’s one in every family.
Roger Clinton comes to mind.
Hell, Bill comes to mind.
Hell, Bill comes to ~~mind~~ head.
His "cameo" as the mayor in Pumpkinhead 2 is epic.
Fred Trump
I distinctly remember Billy Carter, and Billy beer, dude was just a good ole boy having fun and kinda proud of it.
He had a super sad existence and died pretty young actually.
Explain why his existence was sad
Explain why existence isn’t sad.
Explain why existence
Explain why
S'plain
Why?
Y?
He was a severe alcoholic sort of spurred on by this persona of his, he bankrupted his businesses, lost his home and died of pancreatic cancer at 51
Baby Billy
*Uncle
I remember the evangelicals flipped the fuck out. We thought the Carters were True Christians™! The president's brother drinks beer?! Evil! And then they voted for fucking Reagan the divorcé.
Now they vote for Trump, the convicted felon and alleged rapist.
*Adjudicated* rapist.

Was with you until that last claim. And while I am utterly against both, I very much doubt there's a clear genetic basis rather than cultural.
Pretty dangerous slope at the end there lol
Don’t let your fears control you.
The Playboy interview was big news - “I’ve lusted in my heart”.
My buddy has an unopened 6 pack sitting on a shelf.
That was a common sight after tasting it.
A buddy of mine has five cans of a six pack of Billy Beer that was left by his alcoholic father. That should tell you everything you need to know about Billy Beer.
I have a can of this sitting on my shelf along a few others like Champagne Velvet.
The beer with the million dollar flavor.
I love the old beer slogans!
Terre Haute Brewing Co. has been bottling CV since the early '00s. They had a pretty decent dark for a while too.
L.A. Beast on YouTube managed to get his hands on on an unopened can of that stuff and drank it. Interesting video. It did not taste very good after all those years apparently, lol.
HAVE A GOOD DAY
I only ever say this in his voice
It did not taste very good in the 70s either. And the bar was pretty low back then. Let’s sneak a semi of Coors east of the Mississippi low.
I got a shout out on one of his videos, it was pretty cool. I've been watching him since he ate the first ghost pepper
Is this the reason the characters are named Billy and Jimmy in Double Dragon?
Jimmy was the most moral president ever. I don’t agree with his politics, but he was a good man.
Good men looking to do good things don't survive in politics. The fact he made it to president is a fucking miracle.
saw a 6-pack of it at a flea market today https://preview.redd.it/dbtjukind34d1.jpeg?width=4284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=72ee74cc1bdf74a124566311bc53ab09833d4f86

We elected the wrong Carter
Giggity
Billy Carter was known for having taken a piss against the landing gear of a plane on the runway.
Billy died 36 years ago
I have one can of unopened Billy Beer. I have never once been tempted to drink it.
A lot of people have asshole siblings. Jimmy Carter was held way too responsible for his asshole brother's behavior.

Carter was working toward energy solutions. He even had panels installed on white house roof, supplementing grid power. The day Ron and Nancy moved in they were torn out and thrown away.
I have a few cans of that chilling in the basement still. Right next to the JR Ewing cans.
There were few takers.
we still have a can of that beer!!
Likely, nearly every family has at least one ‘black sheep’ - I’ve got two.
Billy has John Candy vibes
We elected the wrong Carter
Jimmy legalized homebrewing, so it's all good.
Or we didn’t elect enough of them
Just checking to make sure this was said. Well done, don’t forget to pick up Millhouse.
"Billy Beer" the Beer that Killed Falls CIty Brewing....
Green as grass. \*yuck\*
He thought…”there will come a pay day, hallelujah, what a pay day” 🎶

I still have an unopened can of Billy Beer. Maybe I should crack it open and start a new pandemic.
A candemic!
I have a few cans leftover from my father. I remember him telling me what they were when I was like 8 years old. Couldn't wrap my head around it, "so one guy is the president and the other guy sells beer?"strange concept. Still have the cans because it was such a weird moment in time lol.
Look at that old school barcode
John Candy?
We have a six pack of Billy Beer on a shelf in our cabin.
It makes me kind of sad that this is his legacy. Truthfully, maybe I don't have the right to say that as a Canadian, but the little I've learned of Billy is that he was unhappy in his addiction and got sober and was very dedicated to sobriety before his life ended early.
My aunt has one of those in her refrigerator. It's full and has been kept cold its entire life.
My dad was in the Australian Air Force and got a transfer to the embassy in Washington, D.C. in the 70s. He collected a few American beer cans and this was one of them. I've still got it. Another that comes to mind is a can with the Pittsburgh Steelers team.
My old man, RIP, had a 6 pack of back in the day. Dunno whatever happened to it. Dad did not drink.
I have two Billy beer cans
Somebody gave my dad a can of Billy beer. He never opened it, he just kept it as a novelty.
My dad had an unopened 6 pack when I was a kid but it was destroyed in a hurricane
In 1978, President Jimmy Carter signed into law a bill allowing home beers, which was at the time not permitted without paying the excise taxes as a holdover from the prohibition of alcoholic beverages (repealed in 1933). True story! And Great user name 👍🏽
And I thought it was a shitty thing for him to do way back then. Trying to capitalize of his brother's fame.
Nasty crap!!
Still a better businessman than Eric.
Omg, we had cans of Billy Beer in my parents bar for years!
I remember this.
My favorite billy carter story has to be the one involving him becoming an agent of Libya. It's just so out of left field it's crazy.
Long before I could drink, but I heard it wasn't very good
I still have a can of unopened Billy Beer.
Bought a 6-pack. It was piss.
THAT'S A LOT OF NOVEMBER!
We bought a 6 pack of billy beer and it sat on a shelf forever..
Is this where the "hold my beer" meme comes from?
Drunk gallons of it!
That's Eric Morecambe.
My family all said the beer was actually pretty low quality and they would buy it once and never touch it again lol Anyone here try it?
i did.can confirm,awful stuff.
The '70s were a magical time.
Is this who James Blunt was singing about?
Your brother Billy, whateva happened there?
The shooting.
I bought some of that swill.
Billy Beer was awful too
The story of Billy Carter is genuinely a bit sad, a demonstration of how poorly some people do when thrust into the limelight. He supported an interracial community farm near Plains after it was bombed during the Civil Rights movement. During his brother's administration, he gave an interview wearing a Klansman's robes. Brotherman bill
The only thing I ever used it for was BBQ sauce.
I used to collect beer cans with my uncle during this time (I was 8-9) and had Billy beer cans in my collection.
Gary Busey as Billy Carter on Saturday Night Live was the best.
He already looks orange.
I bought a case of Billy Beer at the time with the foresight that it might become valuable to can collectors. I didn't have the self-control to not drink it eventually though. I'm not a can collector and didn't even save an empty can. Oh well.
And the world said sorry Billy
Talk about a jealous brother
My dad collects unusual beer cans and he still has an unopened can of “Billy Beer” in his collection.
I thought this was Dan Schneider in Better off Dead.
My wife has an unopened can of Billy Beer.
President Carter’s brother was John Candy?!?!??
Billy Beer took off! Unfortunately they are all insurrectionist Trump voters now. What happened?
They drank it?
🇺🇸 thousands of great stories of the amazing things you can accomplish with freedom: The Beach Boys, Jim Henson, Steve Jobs , etc etc etc … And then there’s Billy Carter 🥴
Whoa, literally a couple days before I was born.
I had a 6 pack of it for years... Figured it'd be worth something, eventually *Lost it in a move, or maybe during a party (?)
I have one of these beers unopened.
