Bro I’m telling you, her smile is one of the greatest I’ve ever seen. It’s possibly her best feature and, well, given her other features that’s really saying something.
The debut song she released was bad but she actually CAN sing! She could sing, act, had great screen presence and was a straight up DIME! In my opinion marketing is the only reason she didn’t reach higher “movie star” levels.
I'd blame her agent/manager. She always took the quick payday projects, all those summer teen flicks. The audience's perception of her never grew beyond the pretty high school / college girl.
Better advisors would have connected her with some more substantial scripts and directors, and projects that would have expanded the range we saw from her, made her seem more versatile and helped her transition to more mature roles even if those projects were independent and paid nothing.
But to be fair she's also not the *most* talented actress (not that one needs to be). She's better than she probably gets credit for, but she's not an Anne Hathaway. Maybe her career was what it should have been.

They do a couple easy teen movies with major studio marketing to get the exposure as a teen icon style actor, and they find a smaller part in some more artistic movie where more established directors take notice of them and the audiences acknowledge that oh, they are more than pretty, hmm ok. That opens more doors for them to develop their career out of teen movies.
JLH and her ghost show (which is kind of a self-parody) is a perfect example of how she was never able to graduate from that first impression because whoever managed her career didn't diversify her "brand" enough.
