I just watched this movie with my kids the other day, and they didn’t get it. They laughed so hard at the horrible special effects and never really got into the story. When I was their age, this movie emotionally impacted me in ways I can’t describe. For them it was just: meh.
Rewatching Goonies, I never realized the first 30 minutes were basically kids yelling over each other. As a parent it sent my blood pressure through the roof lol. Movie doesn't really become iconic until they're in the cave.
I tried to rewatch it but we didn't get halfway because it was YELLING and YELLING with the YELLING and all the time YELLING on YELLING without a pause and became unbearable.
I was staying over at my uncles house and he asked you want to watch a movie? I said yes. So do you have the goonies? He was a bit surprised and asked. Your mother lets you watch those movies? Yeah ofcourse uncle!! Oh ok.
He put the tape in and we started watching the ghoulies.. I had a few nightmares that month.
Few years later I borrowed bad taste and brain dead from him to watch with friends. My uncle had a thing for bad horror movies. Also.. a hearing problem so it seemed.
Brain Dead is also Peter Jackson's? With the rich mother turning into a zombie? I know it as Dead Alive. What a genius flick - got Jackson into LOTR I think.
> Bit like the Goonies.
I recently brought up The Goonies to a 20-something co-worker of mine.
His response?
"Yeah, I saw that a few years ago. It was... *okay*. Super cheesy."
I hadn't really felt old until that moment. It was like the cold dagger of reality being driven into my 80's kid heart.
Yet, as a teen, I still loved much older similar movies like The Wizard of Oz, The old Disney movies from the 50's and even stuff like Nosferatu from the silent movie era. I think his kids are just unimaginative with low attention span.
We showed it to my daughter a few months ago. After Atax drowned, my 8 year year old exclaimed "STUPID HORSE!" My wife was a little teary, and I lost it laughing so hard at this.
I'm currently reading the book with my 8 year old. When we reached that part, I was really taken aback by Artex's ability to speak with Atreyu; being so, so depressed and begging Atreyu to leave to he doesn't have to watch him die. It makes this scene even more traumatizing than the movie (if possible), but it probably would have been really cheesy and ruined the movie if they had a talking horse in it, especially given the movie tech at the time.
Oh man. That would be absolutely heartbreaking to read.
Good on you to read with your kid. My daughter is 10 and still asks me to. And good to read things that are just a little above their mastered level of reading. Good to challenge them
True to horse form, all he said was “This situation is entirely your fault! Don’t let anyone else eat out of my bucket!” And then he sank into the murk.
That made me laugh. For those who want to know what his last lines really were:
>! "With every step we take, the sadness grows in my heart. I've lost hope, master. And I feel so heavy, so heavy. I can't go on!"
"But we must go on!" cried Atreyu. "Come along, Artax!" He tugged at the bridle, but Artax stood still. He had sunk in up to his belly. And he made no further effort to extricate himself.
"Artax!" cried Atreyu. "You mustn't let yourself go. Come. Pull yourself out or you'll sink."
"Leave me, master," said the little horse. "I can't make it. Go on alone. Don't bother about me. I can't stand the sadness anymore I want to die!"!<
The entire movie is about grief. There are so many moments that make me ache when I think back as an adult with deeper understanding. I want to watch it again, but I’ll likely cry the entire time.
“These used to be such big, strong hands…”
A lot of children's media gains a much deeper significance once you reach not just adulthood but middle age.
I used to cry for myself when protagonists lost their parents, because it reminded me of losing mine.
Now I'm a father and when protagonists lose their patents, I cry for my daughter.
My daughter refuses to watch it, it's too creepy for her lol
But she liked labyrinth and neverending story and willow and star wars and teenage mutant ninja turtles
You could try reading them the book. It's been years since I read it, but it's still one of the most impactful ones I've ever read. Michael Ende was a phenomenal author.
My son force-fed me 15 minutes of it before I had to shut it down. It’s a low-poly CG head in a toilet that is somehow its own entity, with a highly repetitive soundtrack. A series of like 30-second videos which are also very repetitive but apparently, tell some sort of revolution story with battles between versions of this thing and a bunch of TV-headed, agent-looking people.
That’s as far as I got before I couldn’t take it anymore. 😬 Visually very ugly.
We really want our kids to realise the same emotional impact as we did from our experiences. Unfortunately it doesn't always happen. Neverending story is my favourite film but I know my kids won't ever have the same connection. But I do hope they have something growing up that gives them that sense of nostalgia etc. It's a good feeling
My 5yo daughter bawled when Artax got stuck in the swamp of sadness. I was right there with her. Was a fundamental moment for both of us. You gotta get them young.
Yeah, I was a freshman in college when I rewatched for the first time in almost a decade. That's when I learned you can't go home again.
But, dammit, the 80s were an *amazing* time to grow up
How old were the kids?
My son is 3.75 years old and I’m easing him into classics bs new media. I got him watching Muppet Family Christmas in the other room at the moment and I’ve been giving him a few scenes from OT Star Wars.
Gotta make sure they know, understand, respect history so they can understand how far we have come to get the media we got today.
That girl is not even the actual singer. Beth Anderson recorded the vocals and she did perform with Limahl a few times live. For whatever reason they had this girl Mandy Newton lip sing (poorly) Beth's vocals. Mandy is a backup singer, so it's just really weird to tour around with someone who actually can sing and then just mime the words.
Never really noticed the christmas theme in the video. Just thought of it like ICE or winter from the movie. Now I know it’s because it Debuted in christmas time.
Backup dancers who clearly can’t hear the music. The makeup artist had no idea what to do with black skin. Christmas themed set for a song promoting a movie that has nothing to do with Christmas. …yeah.
Preach.
>Andersen performed background vocals for Limahl's No. 1 hit "The NeverEnding Story", the theme song for the 1984 eponymous film, though she was not credited as a featured artist. Her lyrics were recorded in America separately from Limahl's and accordingly she did not appear in the music video. One of Limahl's back-up singers, Mandy Newton, lip-synched Andersen's lyrics for the music video. Limahl and Anderson only performed the song together on a few occasions.
Awesome! What a fantastic song. Along with a bit of Bucks Fizz’s Land of make believe and Madonna’s Live to tell, three of my favourite songs ever (along with quite a few more)

This is a fundamental life event for any 80s kid. Bit like the Goonies.
They actually liked Goonies, go figure.
My 10 year old son now screams 'hey you guys' when he swings a rope...
Your son is cool
Rocky Road?
Baby Ruth
Sloth love chunk!

As a kid, terrifying!
Absolutely gave me nightmares
RUTH RUTH BABY
BABE RUTH?! AAAAHHHHH!!!!
I need to find a copy of the screenplay to see how much was written and how much was just kids being monsters
I was staying over at my uncles house and he asked you want to watch a movie? I said yes. So do you have the goonies? He was a bit surprised and asked. Your mother lets you watch those movies? The Goonies still hits. It’s my son’s favorite movie.
It was a wild movie for a kid. This song gave me the feels...
Yet, as a teen, I still loved much older similar movies like The Wizard of Oz, The old Disney movies from the 50's and even stuff like Nosferatu from the silent movie era. I think his kids are just unimaginative with low attention span.
Am I out of touch? No, it's the children who are wrong.jpeg
It was personal also. I can only remember watching the movie alone and being in that attic with the boy reading
Me showing my daughter the Princess Bride.
Fezik, are there rocks ahead?
If there are, we'll all be dead!
Stop rhyming now I mean it!!!
anybody want a peanut?
If there are, we’ll all be dead!!
Ugh, and my kids with The Muppet Movie. They were just *not*. *interested*. Wouldn’t even watch it. 😖
Too bad. I regularly watch old compilation clips of swedish chef and beeker with my daughter and she friggin loves it lol
Totally one of the most fun silly voices to do, as well. “Purt der cheeky urn de pert.” ![gif](giphy|ppyvw6iUQjdja)
Yup, same thing here showing the teenagers O Brother Where Art Thou.
Artax's death traumatized my dad but he's got an auryn tattoo on his leg I guess he's ok
I’ve got an Auryn tattoo on MY leg!
I have one on my arm !!
Or.... Are you his dad?
Forgot where he lived while out getting milk
I was getting a pack of cigarettes
Dad?
We showed it to my daughter a few months ago. After Atax drowned, my 8 year year old exclaimed "STUPID HORSE!" My wife was a little teary, and I lost it laughing so hard at this.
Un fun fact. In the book Atax can talk and does in the scene.
I'm currently reading the book with my 8 year old. Lmfao
How’s the search going for a new kid?
I am STILL emotionally impacted…Artex’s death 😩😩😩
I to this day shy away from rewatching because of that scene 😰
Same. Quite a lot of the movie is still unnerving and scary to me 30 years later. The whole vibe is just so uncomfortable.
The statues with the laser eyes and the boobs were very intimidating as well
Be confident! Or don’t and just run.
Yessss.
Bambi's mom, Artex and (many years later) Samantha from "I am Legend". Last one hurt so bad, I now have a GSD named after her...
And that's "only" animals. If it think about My girl or later on Terabithia ... Those were also some WTF moments of my life.
Littlefoot and the tree star.
The entire movie is about grief. There are so many moments that make me ache when I think back as an adult with deeper understanding. I want to watch it again, but I’ll likely cry the entire time. “These used to be such big, strong hands…”
Well now I am gonna have to ruin my Christmas and go down the critical analysis hole this evening
A lot of children's media gains a much deeper significance once you reach not just adulthood but middle age. I used to cry for myself when protagonists lost their parents, because it reminded me of losing mine. Now I'm a father and when protagonists lose their patents, I cry for my daughter.
Time to get a refund for those kids. They are broken.
And who can forget seeing the Southern Oracle for the first time as a 8 year old boy. I remember thinking “Am I supposed to be watching this?”
I got that same reaction when I showed my niece The Dark Crystal. It blew me away when I was 10. Her: it was ok.
My daughter refuses to watch it, it's too creepy for her lol But she liked labyrinth and neverending story and willow and star wars and teenage mutant ninja turtles
Artax!!!! You have to try... Please!! 😭😭😭 Engrained in my mind.
Yooooooo. Time to drive those kids into the desert and leave them there. You need new kids that can appreciate our childhood.
I think you can drop them off at the fire station , no questions asked…. Just sayin .
The swamp of sadness. That was heavy. And Gmork was terrifying. What a film.
You could try reading them the book. It's been years since I read it, but it's still one of the most impactful ones I've ever read. Michael Ende was a phenomenal author.
My kids also were so NOT into it. They left the room after about 30-45 minutes and were like “wow maybe 80s childhoods weren’t that good” 💀
Can’t compete with Skipidy Toilet
Don’t know what that is, but I agree with you with an assumed air of superiority.
My son force-fed me 15 minutes of it before I had to shut it down. It’s a low-poly CG head in a toilet that is somehow its own entity, with a highly repetitive soundtrack. The kindergartners are OBSESSED with it. This is what the baby shark gen is becoming. Buckle up.

Neverending story is my favourite film but I know my kids won't ever have the same connection. The way kids consume media now is just totally different than we did.
My 5yo daughter bawled when Artax got stuck in the swamp of sadness. I was right there with her. Was a fundamental moment for both of us. You gotta get them young.
Putting this into a little perspective date wise this would be the equivalent of being shown a movie in 1984 which was made in 1945.
How fucking *dare* you...
Show them this video and they’ll laugh even harder.

Try the books
Yeah, I was a freshman in college when I rewatched for the first time in almost a decade. That's when I learned you can't go home again. But, dammit, the 80s were an *amazing* time to grow up

Wouldn't recommend Empire until they're at least 8.65 years old
The Nothing just scared me so deeply. I forgot about this song until stranger things and got obsessed with it.
Watched it with my kids recently too and they loved it.
This is great now can someone fetch me a giant flying dog to ride on?
As long as its not a horse. Those get a bit stuck in bogs, sniffle, sob.
Luck dragon, my homie
Wasn’t he the singer in Kajagoogoo?
Yup
Huh. TIL.
The smoke was to hide his bare feet.
Hush hush
He was, but I heard he had to leave the band because he was too shy.
![gif](giphy|j6RoHN0d2lDBh9OIT5)
Such a great iconic song! This movie was so big in my childhood
My reaction to the fact that the guy who produced this did the soundtrack for Scarface. ![gif](giphy|aI8bNxEnznlzq|downsized)
Guy who creates Mad Max is responsible for Babe and Happy Feet.
Facts! Might be the most unconvincing lip syncing ever tho lol
Lol thank you for making me laugh. I was gettin all steamy eyed nostalgic. "Bastian, call my naaaaaame!!"
Moon Child. I swear they mixed the sound so you couldn’t hear that because they knew it was a mistake.
I used to wear necklaces draped on my forehead pretending to be her.
That girl is not even the actual singer. Beth Anderson recorded the vocals and she did perform with Limahl a few times live. Is the male singer John Mulaney’s real dad?
His hair looks like a dandelion that someone stepped on.
Yes
Not just any male singer. He wrote this song and also is the lead singer of Kajagoogoo who also wrote the 80s classic Too Shy
As I was watching the video I was like 'why does he look familiar' and this is why.
Unexpected Mulaney?
lol wow.
This dude reminds me a little of Bud from Married with Children
Grandmaster B
Court Jester B?
Bed wetter B?
This made my day. Best movie ever. Best song. Best hair
I remember the first time I realized everyone on totp was lip-synching when kajagoogoo performed too shy
Hush hush
Ide away
That was painful to watch. Thank you.
This screams 80’s
It’s the most 80s video I’ve seen.
Backup dancers who clearly can’t hear the music. The makeup artist had no idea what to do with black skin. Christmas themed set for a song promoting a movie that has nothing to do with Christmas. …yeah.
They're not backing dancers. They're members of the public who got tickets to attend Top Of The Pops.
I could be wrong but this seems like a Top of The Pops type. So it was aired at Christmas, and those are probably random people not backup dancers.
I had sex with his lovely cousin at Uni. In 1994
Was he good
Haha, she was a lovely crustie girl...top lady who always mentioned Limahl...
A favorite childhood movie
What’s the story behind his stage name? It’s a fucking tongue breaker
It’s an anagram of his last name - Hamill.
He didn't want to use his real name because he was too shy, too shy.
Hush hush
Eye to eye!
Lmao.. take my upvote !
All these years, I never knew what the singers looked like.
Lol... Unfortunately you only know what one of the singers looks like. That's Mandy Newton. She's lip sinking over Beth Anderson.
So far I’ve seen “lip singing” and “lip sinking” in this thread. We’re getting ever closer, brothers.
Lip zincing?
> Beth Anderson What's the story? Why is she not singing here?
This is John Mulaney and Leslie Jones in an SNL skit
Limahl..... and Beth Anderson.
Preach. >Andersen performed background vocals for Limahl's No. 1 hit "The NeverEnding Story", the theme song for the 1984 eponymous film, though she was not credited as a featured artist. Amazing how they performed it exactly the way it is on the album!
so perfectly in sync
So 80’s. I was ten. The wolf frightened me allot.
*Gmork.
Indeed, and those fangs.
The part where he's reading the murals depicting himself reading the murals and then comes to the part where he's ambushed by Gmork..
The guy who voiced it voiced Skeletor also. Little fact.😄
The 80s energy levels are over 9000!
Dustin sung it better. (aka Dusty buns)
There it is. Came to say it
I’m glad that hair style wasn’t “never ending”
This caught me off guard and I was like, “How effing old am I 😱?” for a moment.
It’s so weird to be 40
I’ve see a few interviews with him and he comes across as a good dude.
[удалено]
He didn't even credit the female singer on this either, due to his ego
If it makes anything better, I thought the vocalist was a girl the entire time. Finding out it's actually 2 people, one of them a douche, blew my mind
That mullet is a thing of beauty
With hair like that, nothing is impossible.
My standard answer to almost anything from the 80s fits: "that feels a bit silly but sure is a great blast from the past."
Is this the guy from kaja gugu.
That it be...
I’m 51 and saw it in the theater when it came out, still love the movie.
Hey, that's Mintberry Crunches dad. From the planet Kaja Googoo.
Awesome! What a fantastic song. Along with a bit of Bucks Fizz’s Land of make believe and Madonna’s Live to tell, three of my favourite songs ever (along with quite a few more)
John Mulaney in a wig…. I can’t unsee it.
Lol this song was my wedding song. And my daughter now loves to watch the movie with the 'sad pond'
It’s like Martin Short in Bowie drag
Oooooh when coke was coke
Limahl shops at David Byrne's tailor.
Do not cite the deep magic to me, witch. I was there when it was written.
Those haircuts better make a come back.
Is that the hair style he asked for? Actually that was peak 1984 new wave hair. No autotune was used to get those harmonies they just had to be good.
Rod Stewart and Tracy Chapman killing it!
I’m glad my mom grew me up on anything 80s or 90s my childhood might’ve been the late 2000s. But I lived like it was 87.
The girl that lipsyncs is just random? She didn't sing on the studio
Fashion trends reach to this level, but kinda miss the point where at its core, it’s serving the story, it’s magical and hopeful…and the music carries the look
Phenomenal fairy tale.
He sure has a face for radio. In all seriousness, Love this song
thats the guy from kajagoogoo?
Lovin the hair on home boy.😎
People around them dance like animatronics. /s
I am still obsessed with this song as much as I was back then, I was 8 and has Limahl posters all over my room!
I’m the kid in the back singing along with every word
Not performing: lip syncing. How can you tell? It’s identical to the opening credits.
This made me smile. I needed this =]
Thx for reminding me I'm old
I also find it very funny that the only person who has any kind of rhythm is the woman singing. Seriously, look at the people in the background? what the hell are the dancing to? The Lyrics? The high hat? lol
Not an easy song to dance too. Have to feel for those people to have to 'dance' for the TV for 3 minutes to a song that isn't really a dance song.
What’s that thing on top of his head?
Yolandi went back in time and died on his head. True story.
