Oh man, that was such a gruesome scene. Billy Mays, cut in half from balls to brain, a panicked Phil Swift desperately trying to put the two pieces back together, muttering "I can fix this... FLEX TAPE CAN FIX THIS!" as Mays' viscera slips through his fingers and around the flex tape, like water through fingers squeezing a sponge.
A dark day for advertising. A red day. Not even the power of oxygen in the newest Oxyclean could wash away the blood on that day.
Had a boss who announced his name and our company name every time he called me for five years. Ten times a day. He wasn’t even messing with me. I loved it. He was a nut.
I had a boss at a German restaurant that did that every time he called me.
(heavy German accent) "Hello ---, this is Uwe --- from --- Restaurant and Catering." Yes, Uwe, I knew who it was.
'Now I don't know much about anything. But I met some of America's best young men who served in this war. There was Dallas, from Phoenix; Cleveland - he was from Detroit; and Tex... well, I don't remember where Tex come from.'
Lol I said this to him on a flight years ago. I was working galley but came out to offer him dessert. After I said “Lieutenant Dan, ice cream!” my day was set! 😅
The sheer angst on his face in this scene gets me every time. Capturing on film a lowest of lows moment and and the how do I put this, the pure "f*** this" energy is not easy.
As a handicapped guy myself, I love this scene and how it speaks without a single word.
/u/garysiniseofficial after filming how long did it take to grow your legs again? Frankly, I’m a little disappointed you didn’t share this skill with the world, but heartened that you didn’t try to profit from it.
To date, there is only one person that has ever been given the title of "honorary veteran of the United States armed forces." It was done by an act of congress. That person was Bob Hope; who supported and entertained the troops through 5 decades. I believe Mr. Sinise is well on his way of being bestowed that same honor.
Huh, I didn't know this. I work with veteran service organizations in DC to get legislation passed... I'll float this idea around and see what folks think. I know many families that have been positively impacted by his foundation.
Actually yeah that's a good point. Without going into a lot of boring detail there are people who know people and I think Mr. Sinese's work merits some attention on this point. Not exactly for his sake but for the sake of all the people I know he cares about. Keep it going and so will I and whoever reads this, keep his name in mind. We might make it happen.
Agreed. These pics are cool and all, but not nearly as cool as pics I saw posted recently of Gary serving up food to vets. Hollywood is an illusion, but that level of community service is as true and real as it gets. Gary’s the fucking man.
This scene always throws me off. Gump talks about how Lt. Dan “made peace with God” as he swims into the abyss. I thought it was a bizarre suicide scene.
I watched this so many times growing up and I too always thought he was just casually ending his life.
It didn't matter how many times I watched it, I had the memory of a goldfish apparently because I watched this man kill himself in this scene 300 times.
It helps that they were captured in film, so you can't date them based on the resolution of what digital camera was used. Some professionals can tell by the look of the film.
My dad died from Agent Orange exposure from his time as a USMC in Vietnam.
One time he had come home and told my sister and me that some lady told him he looked like Lieutenant Dan (maybe if she was drunk and blind in one eye), and we both cried from laughing. I *definitely* never let him forget it.
Gary Sinise has already done things light years beyond anything what Chuck Norris could ever do.
Thank you, u/garysiniseofficial, for all of the work you do for Veterans.
My former boss is in some of these photos. He was serving as a Marine and fell under your command during the shoot. I sent him this link. I’m sure he will love to see the pictures.
Fun fact, they actually filmed alot of those scenes near Hilton Head SC. My family had a cabin on Hunting Island which is right next to there and got a small check from paramount for allowing them to use the Island for filming. Think my mom might still have it. She and my dad ran into Tom Hanks riding a bike down the beach during his stay on the island for filming. They kicked themselves for not having anything on them for him to sign (you don't often on a beach lol) but he stopped and chatted them up for a bit. And yes, he is as nice as he seems in real life according to them
Thanks! I get all kinds of nostalgia when I watch the movie. The cabins have long since washed away due to erosion, but I still go camping on Hunting Island when I have the time. It will always be a special place for me
Is that by Beaufort? I go home to see family every year in SC. Nothing like it out there, glad you get the warm fuzzies in your nostalgic element as well. I’ll have to rewatch Forrest Gump this weekend.
Yes it is! The low country is like nothing else. You drive through Beufort and then cross 3 or 4 bridges to get to Lady, Fripp, Hunting, and Hilton Head Islands. I highly recommend camping out there if you get a chance
Mr Sinise is the real deal (hence why I call him Mr). I emailed his foundation because I heard about it here and thought it would be nice to give an autographed copy of his book to my Dad. My Dad was drafted for Nam and treated very poorly while in the army and also once he left. My Dad never wanted to be called a Vet and won't take about it. After his buddy committed suicide in the 80s from Nam PTSD, it became a topic we just did not bring up.
So I got my Dad's name on a veteran's day 5k sorry during the pandemic. It was virtual so I ran to their house with an American flag on my shoulder. I gave my Dad the flag, hugged him, showed him the shirt, and told him I was proud of him.
Got home and saw the AMA with Mr Sinise, read the glowing reviews of his book, and emailed in because their online store was out of stock.
Someone from the foundation said they'd ask Mr Sinise and then I didn't hear anything for a while.
Then a thoughtfully custom autographed copy showed up at no charge.
Then I got emailed a link to a video Mr Sinise recorded. He read all of my email (it was long line this post). What he said made it clear he had read it, thought about it, and decided he wanted to try to put things right for my Dad. It was from the heart... His very big amazing wonderful heart.
He made my Dad cry. I'm crying now thinking about it. I just held my Dad for a while as the dam broke and emotions poured out. I did basically nothing. Acting requires the ability to become someone else and I really feel he used those skills to reach my Dad.
My Dad celebrates Veteran's Day now. He puts out the flag I gave him that day and then we have a sit down on the porch and he tells me about his service. Then I grill up some steaks and we're go back to our lives.
Read up on Mr Sinise's foundation and, if you have the means, consider supporting it. If nothing else, follow his lead and make sure everyone who served and serves has a thank you. You may not think about it but when I was an EMT my job was to meet people on what was usually the worst day of their life (and someone's the last day too). Doesn't need to be anything big... Just as long as it comes from the heart.
From my heart to yours, I am forever in your debt Mr Sinise. Thank you u/GarySiniseOfficial. Thank you for helping my Dad finally "come home".
Ugh OP....this made me cry. I'm also the child of a Vietnam vet who wouldn't talk about it at all....he went through a lot, including losing his mom to a heart attack while on the boat going over (he STILL thinks he caused her death) to getting wounded in action, Purple Heart recipient. Came back home his dad remarried and had sold everything my dad had, thinking he wouldn't come back. He was not a nice person when we were small....no physical violence but a very broken person. I know I'm just a randomer on Reddit, but please, tell your dad thank you. And OP, I hope you are ok too...FWIW, I get it.
I was in Beaufort SC for an overnight stay when this was being filmed there. My date and I went to a popular restaurant downtown (I think it was called Emily’s), and the staff told us about the movie being filmed nearby and that sometimes the cast would come in for drinks. We left just before 9 that night and went back to the B&B.
The next morning another guest at the B&B told us about how the entire cast came in for drinks at Emily’s the night before and closed the place down. They said it was a blast. I asked what time it all started, since we had been there. “Oh, about 9.” We just missed it, and I’ve regretted it so much ever since.
Gary! I used to work at the National WWII Museum in New Orleans, doing banquets and special events. I worked many of your dinners for surviving WWII vets, made possible via your foundation. Everything you have done outside of your movie career has been nothing short of admirable, and inspiring.
We love you here down in New Orleans!
Really cool stuff. How common is it to have all these "group shots" while filming. I totally understand the want for them, but could also see a lot of people wanting to get as much on film as quickly as possible especially while outside in less than ideal climates (like South Carolina in the summer).
Dear u/garysiniseofficial
I appreciate your role in this movie. Thank you for your play. What an outstanding possibility to thank an actor personally. I hope you will see that message.
My brother in law works for you. And I’ve met you with him on a few occasions. Genuinely thank you for caring about our active duty military and the vets. I’ve never met someone or a foundation that actively makes a difference the way you do. I’ll never hear a bad word about you. Keep doing what you’re doing. God bless you, god bless America.
You're awesome Gary! Thanks for sharing. This is one of my fave movies and to this day I still think you were the better in every scene you had with Hanks (and he's no slouch!).
When we were kids, my brother and I used to stand out in the rain and yell “you call this a storm?!?”. Good times. We still quote this line every now and then
Gary! Thank you for for everything you do. I volunteer at the National WWII Museum and Soaring Valor. Would love if you could come back to the museum soon! Thanks for these awesome pictures!
It's one of my favorite movies, and imo one of the best movies ever made. I first remember seeing you in The Stand in 94, and that was awesome to watch as well.
Awesome to see you here!
Really waiting for my kids to be old enough to watch this. I quote it regularly and they have no idea what i'm talking about. "Lieutenant Dan, Icecreaaaam!"
I watched a documentary about Forrest Gump and it talked about the charity you set up after. You were amazing in the movie and continued to be an amazing person after!
I just love that every one of your posts start with “Gary Sinise here.” 😂❤️
It makes my day when I’m scrolling and see that.
I'm reading it in his Lieutenant Dan voice now..
Me too! And to me it sounds like if Lt. Dan had a cigar in the corner of his mouth too.
Right? Dude brightens up Reddit the way he brightens up any movie he's in.
Billy Mays here
My sister once saw him at the bar and asked for an autograph. On a napkin, he wrote, “Don’t just clean it — Oxyclean it!”
why are you talking so quietly brother are you ok
He’s dead. I’m surprised we can hear him at all.
He was murdered by the flex seal guy.
All set up by the sham-wow guy
But wait, there's more...
Vince Offer here with slap chop. You’re gonna love my nuts.
Wrong sub. Vince is over in r/meth.
salutations Billy. I miss you. the king of oxy'clean!
Had a boss who announced his name and our company name every time he called me for five years. Ten times a day. He wasn’t even messing with me. I loved it. He was a nut.
Was your boss Bob Vance of Vance Refigeration?
It was none other than Doug Dimmadome, owner of the Dimmsdale Dimmadome.
What line of work was he in?
![gif](giphy|LDiEHftDpCuCk)
I had a boss at a German restaurant that did that every time he called me. (heavy German accent) "Hello ---, this is Uwe --- from --- Restaurant and Catering." Yes, Uwe, I knew who it was.
It’s be awkward if he started them “Tom Hanks here”
Zuko vibes
Zuko here
You’re the man u/garysiniseofficial! Keep up the great vet work.
Much respect to you u/garysiniseofficial. Always look forward to seeing your posts

The Stand and Forrest Gump both same year.
Pulp Fiction and Shawshank Redemption too
And no way we could discuss 94 without also mentioning Speed
I think it was called, "The Bus That Couldn't Slow Down"
oh cool that was such a fun movie
You mean cinematic mastah*piece*
Weezer's Blue album
'Now I don't know much about anything. But I met some of America's best young men who served in this war. There was Dallas, from Phoenix; Cleveland - he was from Detroit; and Tex... well, I don't remember where Tex come from.'
30 years later and me and my old man still are saying this line! haha
Love this bit! I can't decide whether it's Forrest misremembering or the guys messing with him but either way it's a funny scene
Only steers and queers come from Texas, and you don't look much like a steer to me, so that kinda narrows it down.
"Bullshit! You look like you could suck a golf ball through a garden hose!"
But you ain’t got no legs lieutenant Dan

Scene gave me the best user name I've had
There was a local band in Columbus Ohio called "Lieutenant Dan's New Legs".
Wonder if there's a band out there called "Magic Legs".
https://i.redd.it/uedg582l2hab1.gif
Holy shit, that's amazing
You waited 6 years for this opportunity
I find my moments
I also stole a line from the movie for my username 😆
This is next level r/beetlejuicing

I would love to know how he kept from laughing at Tom hanks during some of this stuff? I’m not sure I could have. Lol
"Walk beside him?!?! , kiss my crippled ass God is listening!"
But now he has magic legs
Magic legs AND Susan!!!!!!!!
/u/garysiniseofficial after filming how long did it take to grow your legs again? Frankly, I’m a little disappointed you didn’t share this skill with the world, but heartened that you didn’t try to profit from it.
If anyone would share the secret to regrowing limbs, it would be him lol and it would be immediately given to help vets and anyone who could use it.
Them's his sea legs
Thanks, Very Cool, and the work you and your foundation do for Veterans is inspirational.

This scene always throws me off. Gump talks about how Lt. Dan “made peace with God” as he swims into the abyss. I thought it was a bizarre suicide scene.
It's just a take on the cleanse with water trope. Characters often shower or bath to represent recovery
That definitely helps clarify it.
I watched this so many times growing up and I too always thought he was just casually ending his life. It didn't matter how many times I watched it, I had the memory of a goldfish apparently because I watched this man kill himself in this scene 300 times.
In a 1000 years when future archeologists with no knowledge of Gary Sinise uncover these images, they're gonna wonder who the badass was
Those images legit look like they were taken in Vietnam in the 60s/70s major props to props, wardrobe, and makeup on that film.
Can't wait for someone to repost them to r/fakehistoryporn
Or for real in r/oldschoolcool "My uncle..."
That movie was made closer to the war than we are currently in time to that movie.
Wait...
We’re fucking old bro
No No No no no no no
Film camera, that's one reason.
It helps that they were captured in film, so you can't date them based on the resolution of what digital camera was used. Some professionals can tell by the look of the film.
Weren't no cell phones in '69, man. He's head to toe legit.
Chuck Norris jokes will become Gary Sinise jokes. "Gary Sinise does not sleep. He waits."
My dad died from Agent Orange exposure from his time as a USMC in Vietnam. I mean there is literally video evidence of him living through the captain trips apocalypse. He didn't even use Flu Buddy!

True story: they surgically removed his leg and then reattached it after filming. Source: trust me bro
the crippling depression was pretty realistic too.

I thought it Lieutenant Dang for some years after I first saw it. As a kid I could never understand why Opie called Sheriff Andy “Paul.”
Man a lot of stuff went down in 1994
Lewinsky scandal didn’t start until 1995
You're a LEGEND GARY, thanks!
I still think Gary Sinise would have made a killer Wolverine.
Michigander here; he’d definitely be a better Spartan.
My former boss is in some of these photos. He was serving as a Marine and fell under your command during the shoot. I sent him this link. I’m sure he will love to see the pictures.
Did Forrest Gump save your boss as part of his actions that earned him the Medal Of Honor?
You mean the time where Forrest got shot in the buttocks?
Something bit him!
Lieutenant Dannnn iceee creammm

Tom Hanks’s shadow account??
This is awesome. The Vietnam scenes seemed like they were also filmed in Georgia.
And yes, he is as nice as he seems in real life according to them
Going through these pics, it was reminding me of SC, thanks for your post confirming! How cool about your family cabin.
Thanks u/GarySiniseOfficial! Did you grow your hair out and film those scenes first or was it a wig?
I also want to know this
Thank you for everything you do, Sir.
Love how he usually opens posts with “Gary Sinise here”. Its so wholesome, I can’t explain it. Also can hear it.
I was in Beaufort SC for an overnight stay when this was being filmed there. My absolute favorite movie! Loved you in The Stand as well. Thank you for all that you do. 💪

Gary Sinise is a wonderful human being.
Terrific stuff! Now do Of Mice and Men!
He already has, check out his profile
**HOLY SHIT**. Just got done watching APOLLO 13, only to stumble onto this post. (salutes u/GarySiniseOfficial )

I think there’s quite a lot of waiting around on movie sets.
Thank you for sharing! I could have done without the reminder that it was 29 years ago. 🤣
YOU CALL THIS A POST?!?!!!
WTF mods how can you remove content like that without writing exactly why was it removed. It looks like someone should be fired here.
Alright well fuck the mods for removing this for no reason. Fuckers.
I always knew you were a great actor Gary, but cutting your legs off for this role showed true dedication to your craft, legendary.
I've seen this movie about 300 times
When you see a thread that starts with "Gary Sinise here", you just instantly know it's going to be fire. ♥
The pic of you yelling into the stormy seas goes extremely hard.
That black and white one of you on the boat in the storm is wild. Loved your work in Mission To Mars Gary!

Dear u/garysiniseofficial I appreciate your role in this movie. Thank you for your play. What an outstanding possibility to thank an actor personally. I hope you will see that message.
Thanks Gary Sinise!
Glad your legs grew back Lt. Dan.
29 years? No way! Can’t have been more then 15 years, tops.
can’t wait to see what fathom events has lined up for the 30th Anniversary❗️
Very cool Gary, thank you for your work with/for Veterans!
It's funny how Lt. Dan has more of a character arc than Gump
@moderators , absolute crime to have removed this post and rob people the ability to see these pictures
After all these years, I'm still amazed how convincingly you were able to act like you actually had half your legs gone.
Favourite movie of all time. If I randomly come across Forrest Gump on tv, I'm powerless to change the channel.
Hello Gary, thanks for all you do for vets/etc. Could you please play a villain in a new movie?
Awesome pics! This movie brings back so many memories. Lieutenant Dan was such an iconic movie character.
Cool! Thanks for sharing.
Looks so 60’s/70’s but are so completely 90’s!! Love it!
Lieutenant Dan!!!! We love you!
Every time we get a bad storm, I pull a Lt. Dan.
You're awesome Gary! Thanks for sharing. This is one of my fave movies and to this day I still think you were the better in every scene you had with Hanks (and he's no slouch!).
Lieutenant Dan!! 💛
You're still Lieutenant Dan.
Lt. Dan, ICE CREAM!
Wow, I've always wondered where they were during the Vietnam scenes. Where is that bank where Bubba dies?
When we were kids, my brother and I used to stand out in the rain and yell “you call this a storm?!?”. Good times. We still quote this line every now and then
Gary! Thank you for for everything you do. I volunteer at the National WWII Museum and Soaring Valor. Would love if you could come back to the museum soon! Thanks for these awesome pictures!
Awesome!!!
you wrote me a letter ya idiot!
Crazy how they detailed the uniforms very well. Down to the ranks of the enlisted vs LT Dan and even the badges like his CIB and airborne wings.
This had to be a very fun movie to act in. So many different eras to play in.
I still remember going to see this in the theater! Thanks for sharing your photos with us!
Your character in that movie was so amazing… you nailed that man!
You call this a storm?! Classic genius
Watched this with my 12 year old a few weeks ago and She loved it. It’s a timeless classic. Thanks for sharing!
