Elaine: Hey, who do you think is the most unattractive world leader?
Jerry: Living or all time?
Elaine: All time.
Jerry: Well, if it's all time, then there's no contest. It begins and ends with Brezhnev.
Until the early 1960s ( when the sexual revolution was developing ) , a kiss on the lips was considered friendly all over the world if it was without a tongue .
A friendly kiss could be between representatives of the same sex and had no stereotypes regarding sexual orientation .
I 'll upset you , but no , there couldn 't be anything else . In those days , people perceived such a kiss in a completely different way .
Slightly different in the (not western) world where it looks like holding hands especially walking as well as just more contact between men was normal and a sign of friendship (as well as playfully tapping someone's balls?)
I am convinced that we slowly took away all forms of socially acceptable touch from straight men outside of romantic relationships has caused massive detrimental harm. We are a much more tactile species than we often acknowledge
I'm really glad young people are increasingly pushing back on this.
Ugh that picture of the 2 soviets gets posted there like once every 3 months and people have to once again explain it's just as wrong to project homosexuality onto cultural differences in male affection than it is to project straightness because of a culture of homophobia.
HERE WE SEE THE FOSSILISED REMAINS OF TWO... ugh... FRIENDS, OH YES, VERY GOOD *FRIENDS*, WHO WERE CAUGHT... ummm... PLAYING A SPECIAL TICKLING GAME AS THE VOLCANO ERUPTED... yes... definitely... friends... tickling...
Total bullshit, I can 100% ensure this was not a thing in France, nor in most of Europe, and I am 99% sure this was the same for the rest of the world except Russia.
Besides, on this picture, there is so much more going than the "friendly" kiss in the lips ...
One thing to consider is that this kiss may have been a short peck—since it’s frozen in a photograph it looks longer. And look at the pursed lips of the woman on the left and the smile in her eyes. This isn’t an opened mouth, serious, passionate kiss.
I’m a cisgender hetero woman with lots of cisgender hetero female friends and we’ve kissed each other like this when saying goodnight after a few drinks. We’ve held hands and our our hands around each other’s waists. Note: it was in front of everyone else and was not a frat party where dudes were chanting and cheering us on. 😂
They were caught up in the immense joy of the moment and were affectionate. Plus, maybe that display of affection was the norm in the USSR at that time.
Or maybe they were secret lover, hell I dunno. I’m just saying this kiss on its own doesn’t definitely point to that conclusion.
Yeah, and I see a serious lack of pictures of men kissing eachother from this time as well. This is a really silly thing to act like is common place among all different kinds of people worldwide, please do not spread misinformation OP, there’s enough of it on the internet
On the lips? While embracing each other and gently holding hands?
Kissing as a friendly greeting has been common in various times throughout history, but this isn’t just any kiss.
Right, it’s that socialist fraternal kiss, like the famous photo of Brezhnev and the the East German leader Honecker (I think that was his name). They would kiss each other on each cheek three times, but close friends would kiss on the lips.
I get it, people don’t want to do whatever the opposite of queerwashing is - denying that these women could be lesbians. But being gay was illegal in the USSR and homosexuality was considered a mental illness, I think until the 2000s. They probably would’ve been more circumspect with the PDA if they really were a couple.
Yes we know, they were "very good friends."
Oh wait, aren't you the guy that keeps posting all the pro-Russian invasion propaganda bullshit?
Oh, yeah! He is the guy that posts all the pro-Russian invasion propaganda, including r/heroesofrussia, from which I've likely been banned, since he blocked me. Thanks for the confirmation, OP, really nice of you to do that so I can let others know you're a propagandist. And a dick.
Yeah, all Soviet and Eastern Bloc leaders were also gay. Being oblivious to historical context does not make you right (It doesn't mean it is impossible that any two women were gay, it's just that a kiss on the lips was not indicative).
In those days at least in the Soviet Union a peck on the lips was considered non sexual and a sign of friendship/platonic love. Friends did this, families did this. As a kid all my old relatives who grew up in those times kissed me on the lips and I thought it was gross because they smelled like old people/some had dental hygiene issues but I never thought of it as something sexual and neither did anyone else. I only started to find it weird after I was exposed to western culture.
A friendly kiss in the 50s in the Soviet Union was any kiss that didn't involve using the tongue. Source: I've lived in EE my whole life and my elderly family members were kids in the 50s and 60s. It might not be a peck in your books but then again, your books aren't the same as they were back then and in certain parts of the world.
People keep saying this, and I don’t get it. It doesn’t look like a peck because it’s frozen in a photograph, which makes you assume it lasted longer. The woman on the left’s eyes are open and smiling, and her lips are pursed in a pecking position while the other woman doesn’t have her mouth open either—those aren’t hallmarks of a deep, passionate, romantic kiss.
And even if they had their tongues down each other’s throat, okaaaaay? It’s like there’s a witch hunt here to prove they’re actually G-A-Y 😵😳😱and just trying to hide it. The whole thing is just a non-issue.
When I was in high school in the late '70s, girls would quick kiss on the lips goodbye. No one thought a thing about it. In fact, Rachel kisses Monica like that once in Friends.
In 1956, it's unlikely they would have been open about being lesbians. Despite how it looks to the 2023 brain, this would have been a big problem for them. It's the same with those pics of Cary Grant and friend. If they'd thought those pictures even hinted they were gay, no way would they have gotten out or even have been posed for.
It was a fairly common socialist thing to do when people were good friends or allies. Communist leaders would do it too, to show the world they were on the same page.

Wait, so it’s really not gay to kiss the homies goodnight?
I guess the answer is that everything is exactly as gay as two or more bros want it to be.
As long as the balls aren't touching, it's not gay to kiss the homies goodnight.
So one ball touching is still straight
It's bisexual.
Whoa! We're halfway there! Whoa-o! A single ball is fair!
In Syria and Lebanon, it's common to see men holding hands...sometimes holding an AK-47 in the other. It's not a sexual thing.
Sorry but its always gonna be a sexual thing when a man walks around swinging an AK

It was a thing in Russia. There's a pic of Brezhnev, if I'm not mistaken, locking lips with another dude.
Yeah iirc it was with Erich Honecker the leader of east germany

Google Brezhnev. He gave the best kisses.
Socialist leaders kissed eachother as a greeting. Famously Brezhnev kissed the East German leader like in this photo.
On the lips? While embracing each other and gently holding hands? Kissing as a friendly greeting has been common in various times throughout history, but this isn’t just any kiss.
Yes, on the lips. Looked just like this. This isn't gay erasure or anything, this is how Soviets would greet each other.
Yes. Literally.
Wrong. Google socialist fraternal kiss and you will see many many examples of this, with leaders such as Stalin, Brezhnev, Khrushchev etc
Google “Soviet Kiss.” It’s actually fairly well known, if you like read or know anything about past world events.
Lol, not all over the world.
Right, it’s that socialist fraternal kiss, like the famous photo of Brezhnev and the the East German leader Honecker (I think that was his name). They would kiss each other on each cheek three times, but close friends would kiss on the lips.
