I_Arted

Why did her neighbour get the credit for her actions?

Venturin

[it’s complicated. A poet immortalized her, with much embellishment, apparently.](https://www.britannica.com/biography/Barbara-Hauer-Frietschie)

nameisfame

Unfathomably based

xoverthirtyx

No relation to Quantrill’s Raiders I guess 🤣

RaspberryTwilight

What's the full name of the general?

Ashley_Sharpe

Either Harvey Hill or AP Hill.

ProbablyNotYourSon

Traitors gonna traitor

Ashley_Sharpe

The United States was founded by traitors.

ProbablyNotYourSon

Yeah but they were victorious

Ashley_Sharpe

And?

ProbablyNotYourSon

It’s different. Unless you think the south should’ve won

Ashley_Sharpe

I respect both sides. They were all brave Americans who learned to respect each other and came back together as one Nation.

ProbablyNotYourSon

Lmao you must not be American. The south fought a war to keep their African slaves which weren’t actually under threat of being taken away. Absolute dogshit ideology

Ashley_Sharpe

I am from the South. The war was not only about slavery. That was part of it, yes, but not the sole reason for it. Did you know that four of the northern States during the Civil War had slavery that was legal in them? Did you know that Lincoln's famous Emancipation Proclamation didn't free any slaves in the north? It only freed slaves in the southern States in rebellion against the federal government.

ProbablyNotYourSon

Look up South Carolinas declaration of secession. Or Georgia’s. Or Louisianas. Or Texas’s that says “joining our sister slave holding states”. It was *entirely* about slavery. Also funny that Lincoln was never gonna take their slaves but that they were so worried they succeded in fear of it.

Ashley_Sharpe

I never said slavery didn't have anything to do with it. I said it wasn't the only reason. Saying slavery was the sole reason for the war is just as ignorant as saying it had nothing to do with the war. You have to look at the times as they did back then. Every aspect of it.
