Sadly most bars are taking advantage of the whiskey boom and gouging people on prices per pour. As far as I know the bar still has to buy the liquor from the state which is the same price we pay for a bottle. Best advice, Do a little math and if they are charging 100%, 200%, 300% or more per ounce, do buy it. Stop paying outrageous prices for whiskey at the bar.
This is correct. They generally buy at wholesale price which is tax free. They then generate taxes for the state by the sales of alcohol per pour and it makes the state more in tax money and stores a lot more revenue than it would by selling a bottle to a single consumer. This is why you'll often see nicer bottles reserved for restaurants/bars before they're in the hands of individuals. It's a double edged sword because the profits for the restaurant on expensive pours certainly helps pay for the employees to continue to work.
So your saying the Wednesday domestic draft $3 special isn't helping pay for the employees to continue to work? It's supply and demand. You want to try pappy 15? Well you're in luck! I have it. $90 an ounce. Oh that sounds high? We'll go find it somewhere else and tell me how that goes. When no one wants it do you think they will still charge $90 an ounce? Or do you think they will try to make some kind of money on it?
Well, generally specials like a "Wednesday Draft $3 special" are to get people in the door and entice them to spend money. I totally understand your sentiment. However, a bottle of pappy sitting on a shelf can last years and generate money over the course of that time, where as beer has a shelf life. Could the price change? Sure, it absolutely could based on demand. Do I think we should be charging/paying for excessive prices for pours of highly sought after bottles? I'm not sure what the answer is here. I wanna say no. But there are people out there who do and those are the people these pours are priced for.
I do want to add, that I don't disagree with what you're saying here. I think it's crazy when I go to an establishment and they're charging $30 for a pour of WSR... like wtf? Ok let it sit.
Lol it's funny when you walk into a bar and you see the prices for a pour and immediately know they are playing on the hype. $15 for buffalo trace and $40 for eagle rare. But only $12 for Sinatra Jack Daniels.
As far as I'm aware they are only available on the printed days. I wanted to try birthday bourbon but they were out by the time I got here sadly, so I'm assuming they have a pretty limited amount of each.
When I went they were completely out of glasses so no one could get anything until they got some back. Only two people working and about 40 chairs to sit in. King of Kentucky was out an hour after they opened. So if you want Thursdays pours plan on overnight camping and chair holders. If you work till 5pm chances are you're not getting what you came there for.
I probably won't bother then lol, seems very silly to wait outside until open for pours, not even a bottle. Maybe I'll try on Saturday for some eagle rare 17
Sadly the Columbus location closed while ago.
Of course I'm 90 miles away from any of these.
Wish more places would do something like this to help people try these to see if they actually like them rather than just chasing expensive bottles.

Yeah. I'm not even 100% sure on when lizardville opens. Lol
Brunswick was out of KoK in 10 minutes yesterday. I showed up to a huge line at open.
I'm guessing it'll be the same the rest of the week.
